Thought For The Day
You don’t FIND the happy life. You MAKE it!
Meet Your New NeighborsBy Cindy Shaw
Russell BYReR joins us from Middletown, Indiana and will be living part-time at 186 Bimini Dr. He has a daughter, Stacey (45) and a son, Andrew (43). He also has 5 grand-children—Carter (15), Allison (16), Drew (12), Lexie (15), and Ashton (6). Russ came down to Florida in January of 2019 and spent a month in Pass-a-Grille. After hunting around for homes online, he finally found the one on Bimini Dr. which he purchased. Russ worked for GM as an electrical engineer for 27 years and for Ball Corporation for 6 years. He has a love for vintage cars and has owned a 1940 Ford coupe and a 1952 Chevy pickup. He still owns a 1966 VW. Russ also enjoys biking and boating and has sailed up the East Coast. Please welcome Russ to wonderful Tropic Isles. The last name should be familiar to you. sHiRleY GoRToN is the mother of Jim Gorton and his wife, Chris and she will be our new, full-time neighbor at 63 Edessa Dr. Shirley is from Uncasville, CT. Her son, Jim, lives in Tropic Isles, but her other two chil-dren—Linda and Stanley—live back in CT. She has 4 grandchildren—Michael, Stephanie, David, and Christy Lee—and 5 great grandchildren –Eli, Avery, Jolene, Kaylee, and Leah. Shirley worked as a part-time mail carrier during the Christmas season and a bookkeeper at a hardware store for 10 years. She owned a “gentle-men’s farm” where they kept goats, sheep, pigs, geese, chickens, and a large garden. Shirley lived in her home in Port Charlotte since 1989, so it took a little convincing to get her to move, but she found the lovely new model home on Edessa Dr. Shirley enjoys swimming and playing games like cribbage and dominoes. Her 11-year old Tuxedo cat, Hen-ry, was having a hard time adjusting to the move and he was shy about having his picture taken. It took a little coaxing from Shirley to convince him that it would be ok, and he finally joined her for the pic-ture. Please give a warm, Tropic Isles welcome to Shirley and Henry. Please give a warm, Tropic Isles wel-come to our new, part-time neighbors, THoMas sNaBes and CHRisTiNe iR-wiN at 2851 Trinidad Way. They come all the way from Rochester Hills, Michigan. Tom and Christine had been looking around for a place to spend their winters and started looking on the East Coast of Florida among other places. They spent time in the Sebring area and eventually hooked up with a realtor that brought them into Tropic Isles. They looked at different homes and decided on their place on Trinidad Way. Christine and Tom have a blended family of 5 children—Grant, Katie, Jacob, Eric, and Christopher. Together

Tom worked as a metallurgist in the steel industry for 40 years where the guys at work called him the “witch doctor”. Christine worked as a budget analyst for the Trans-Canada pipeline. Tom enjoys gardening, golf, fishing, and working with his hands. Christine enjoys reading, crafting and spending time with her grandsons. They share their home with two, 10-year old King Charles Spaniels—Rex and Chaps. Welcome to Tropic Isles!
New to Tropic Isles are RosaiRe and JaN CoTe, full-time residents at 126 Capri Dr. Jan has lived all over the country moving with her job, but she is originally from Midland, MI. Rosaire was born in Quebec, Canada. Both Rosaire (since 2004) and Jan (since 1992) lived in the Palm Hill Community in Largo, Florida, but did not know each other. Rosaire and Jan finally met through a mutual friend and were married in 2013. After meeting Kay Lynn Duncan at a state shuffleboard tournament, they decided to check out Tropic Isles on her recommen-dations. They loved the idea of a community on the water and decided to purchase the newer home for sale on Capri Dr. Rosaire worked as an iron worker for 40 years and retired in 1995. Jan worked as an interior designer and decorator for 61 years. She also taught figure skating at one time. Jan has 6 children—Kellie, Lifa, Nikki, Ronald, Todd, and India. She also has 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Both Jan and Rosaire LOVE shuffleboard and spend their time shuffling 5 days a week. Jan has only been shuffling for 6 years but excels at it and turned “pro” in 2019. Rosaire also enjoys fishing when he’s not on the shuffle courts. Please welcome Jan and Rosaire to wonderful Tropic Isles! It’s my pleasure to introduce you to JeRRY and sue FeRRaNTi from Pensacola, Florida. While in the mili-tary, the Ferranti’s have lived all over the world, spending 5 years in Europe. They will make their winter home as part-time residents at 45 Montego Dr. They have 3 children—Jerry, Angie, and Richard and 7 grandchildren—Madison, Mason, Connor, Clinton, Autumn, Kylie, and Brooke. Jerry was in the Navy for 28 years and served as an engineering pro-pulsion officer for 16 of those years. He is also a combat veteran serving in the special forces in Viet Nam from 1968-1969. He has been retired from the service for 27 years. Sue worked in financial management in civil service for 38 years. Jerry and Sue met the Rowlands and Metzlers while vacationing in Key West. They encouraged the Ferranti’s to check out Tropic Isles as a place to bring their motorhome in the winter. The Ferranti’s tried to get RV reservations that winter, but there was no avail-ability, so they ended up spending time in Fisherman’s Cove. The next two years, they were able to rent different spaces in Tropic Isles. They finally decided to find a permanent place of their own and purchased the RV lot on Montego Dr. Jerry enjoys fishing and hunting (deer and hogs). He also has been doing woodworking for the last 5 years. Sue loves being retired and spends her free time doing genealogy for her family tree. She has been researching her family history since 1988 and hopes to publish a book about it when she’s done. They share their motorhome with 5-year old, Jennifer, a Cairn Terrier. Jerry and Sue have jumped right in, volunteering at many events and getting involved in Tropic Isles. When you see them, give them a warm Tropic Isles welcome!

letter From The editor The season came to a screeching halt and many of the snowbirds had to stay longer before returning to their northern homes. We all look forward to better times and to the summer months. Those of us who remain behind, serve as caretakers of the Co-op and will keep it in good hands until your return. Tropic Isles doesn’t go to sleep while you are away. Those of us who are “full-timers”, keep the wheels in motion, deal with all the construction projects, and continue to work to keep Tropic Isles a great place to return to. Before you head to your summer homes, please remember to prepare your home and yard properly for the summer and the coming of hurricane season. enclosed is a checklist that you can clip and save to help you with your preparations. If you would like to stay connected to Tropic Isles over the sum-mer, check us out on the Tropic Isles’ website at www.tropicisles.net. Click on “Residents” at the top of the page. From there, a dropdown menu will appear, and you can access the latest copy of the Breezes newsletter to find out what’s going on in Tropic Isles. If you are a Shareholder, you can log in and access the minutes to the Board meetings. You can also check us out on Facebook by typing “Tropic Isles Community and Yacht Club” into the subject bar. Unfortunately, social distancing and “safer at home” seem to be commonplace terms in our vocabulary now, but if everyone does their part, we can help to end this stressful time in our lives and return to normal soon. The year 2020 will be remembered at the “Year of the Pandemic”, but hopefully we’ll come out on the other side stronger, more resourceful, more considerate, and kinder to each other. With summer soon approaching, I would like to encourage every-one to look ahead to better times and send in a picture of your travels or fun activities this summer. I am always looking for your pictures to enhance the newsletter. Thanks, in advance, for your pictures.
Safe travels, happy trails, and stay well! We look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Chaotic Time I heard a doctor on TV recently telling viewers in this chaotic time of Coronavirus that while staying at home we should all focus on establishing inner peace. He went on to say that in order to achieve this, we should always finish things we start and we all could use more calm in our lives. I looked through my house to find things I’d started and hadn’t finished, so I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of wum, tha mainder of Valiumun srciptuns, an a box a chocletz. Yu haf no idr how fablus I feel rite now. Sned this to all who need inner peez. An telum u luvum. An hash yer wands. Stafe day avrybobby!!!
(Submitted by Hank Vitan)LOCKDOWN
Just be careful because people are going crazy from being in lock down! Actually, I’ve just been talking about this with the microwave and toaster while drinking coffee and we all agreed that things are getting bad. I didn’t mention anything to the washing machine as she puts a different spin on everything. Certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant. In the end, the iron straightened me out as she said everything will be fine. No situation is too pressing. The vacuum was very unsympathetic... told me to just suck it up, but the fan was more optimistic and hoped it would all soon blow over! The toilet looked a bit flushed when I asked its opinion and didn’t say anything, but the doorknob told me to get a grip. The front door said I was unhinged and so the curtains told me to ........yes, you guessed it .... pull myself together.

Wow – your dream can come true! You can be in charge of our community exterior Christmas Holiday lights. We need someone to lead and manage our park exterior Holiday Christmas lighting. You can review what we have on hand (we recognize that much should be replaced) and outline a plan for our buildings, common areas, and park entrances. Many volunteers will help you with the actual “put up” and “take down” execution, but we need a leader! What greater way to kick off your holiday season than by leading the holiday lighting for our Tropic Isles’ Community? Please call Pat Brazil 612-669-9462 if you have the holiday spirit and interest to light up our park for the holidays!

safety Tip of The Month – Dangerous Distraction
April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month and it is a good time to remember the consequences
of texting while driving. Even though most drivers think texting and driving is dangerous, one third admit to texting or emailing behind the wheel. Instead of picking up your phone, consider pulling over or asking a passenger to read and respond to the message for you. Set your smartphone with the “Do Not Disturb” setting that silences incoming calls while you are sitting behind the wheel.

Boat Club News Who could have ever imagined that our Boat Club season would have come to such an abrupt end? We were lucky enough to enjoy our annual Spaghetti Supper in November, a fun Christmas Party in December, our Valentine’s Day Dance and Poker Run in February, and our annual Picnic at Sea Breeze Park and Fishing Derby in March. We held our election for a 2nd Vice Commo-dore on-line and Tom Hennessey was elected. We hosted Saturday morning coffee in January and brought in two wonderful speakers who enlightened us about the wonders of our Terra Ceia Bay. Our membership grew at nearly every meeting and we have remained a very involved and vibrant organization. There was never a time when we didn’t have enough volunteers and helpers for our meetings or functions. When, as Commodore, I had to go home to take care of my son, John Brink, the 1st Vice Commodore, stepped up and ran the club without a hitch. Our sailors had a great season racing on Terra Ceia Bay and our kayakers have been busy almost every week paddling in the Bay and out into the Manatee River. The Boatyard has been well maintained and many of its problems and issues have been dealt with. It was a busy and fun year. Even though we didn’t have our annual fish fry, we ended the year with hopes that next year will be better than ever. Thank you all for your help and support.
Sue Weaver, Past Commodore

The Boat Club’s annual fishing derby was held bright and early on Wednesday, March 11th with clear skies and a calm wind as 11 boats left the Main Basin promptly at 8 AM. When they returned at 2:00 PM, a good-sized crowd greeted them at the Marina. Four boats fished in-shore. Steve Pearcy won one of the $25 prizes for the most fish caught. His boat and crew brought in 119 fish. Dick Labrecque won the $25 prize for the largest fish, a 16-inch sheepshead. Seven boats went offshore and brought in a total of nearly 700 fish for our annual fish fry which was to be held on April 1st. Unfortunately, the fish fry was cancelled due

If you’re interested in a Tropic Isles’ Cookbook – call or email Pat Brazil at 612-669-9462 or [email protected] and I will place a cookbook in a baggy for you on our carport table and you can stop by and pick it up. No socializing! The cookbook and baggie will be sanitized, and the baggie will be labeled with your name. I will keep a journal and collect payment this fall/winter when we are no longer under such extreme concerns with handling cash.

Reading Material for Vets We continue to collect reading materials for Vets. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The Library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are duplicates and those books that are too old to shelve. There will be a
collection box in our “temporary library” at 42 Montego Dr. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it is always greatly appreciated.
Newcomers’PartyRe-cap
A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped or attended the Biennial Newcomers Party in late January. It was a fun, busy event and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. It is a function that requires the active participation of all the groups and organizations in the park along with numerous volunteers. Hope to see you all at the next one in 2022.

TropicIsles’BloodDrive–UPDATE Thanks to all those people who took the time to donate blood at our blood drives this season. Unfortunately, our last blood drive had to be cancelled due to the Corona virus mandates, but we will continue with our blood drives in the fall. Hope to see you then.
Tropic isles’ Book Club We will continue to meet virtually on the second Tues-day of the month at 1 PM over the summer. Members who are part-time residents can call/send in comments when they are away that will be shared with all.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN)
NHN will continue throughout the summer to help with any resi-dent needs as the circumstances will allow. Our volunteers will aid residents with various jobs including weeding, yard work, power washing, clearing carports, simple maintenance jobs, and compliance issues. Specific reasons for our help include: illness, aging, financial difficulties, or just to lend a helping hand. We have compiled a list of vendors and various agencies that can also offer help and guidance. Check out our bulletin board in the Auditorium where we list them. Call the people listed below or the Office personnel for help.

~~special Thanks~~ I would like to thank everyone who sent cards, emails, prayers, messages, or called to help me as we struggled with my son’s illness and hospitalization this winter. It was heartwarming and appreciated to know people cared about me and about him. The prayers worked and he is recovering nicely here with me at Tropic Isles. It was a life changing experience and has made me truly appreciate you and what we have here in Tropic Isles. I am blessed to have you in my life.
Sincerely, Sue Weaver The Entertainment Committee would like to thank everyone for their support of our activities this past season. It has been our pleasure to bring enjoyment to you. We decided to keep the “Biker Bash/Born to be Wild” theme for next season’s farewell party since we had already done much work toward that theme. Much of the ticket money for this event has already been refunded. If you did not receive your refund, you may exchange your ticket for one of the following dances next season: Halloween, Welcome Back, Christmas, or Farewell. We wish you all a safe, healthy, fun-filled summer and return to Tropic Isles.

library News As of this writing, I’m not sure if we are still “safe at home” or getting ourselves back to our regular routine. As you are well aware, our library has been closed since mid-March and the month of April due to the Coronavirus. We will reopen as soon as we are given permission by Governor DeSantis. To all our Tropic Isles residents, please remain healthy and get outside to enjoy the Florida sunshine.

Going Stir Crazy? Irene Casey has supplied us with some books and puzzles from the Library and placed them at 42 Montego Dr. in the lanai. It is always open. If you wish to borrow anything, sign it out and cross off your name when you return it. We also have a box there for any donations.

Tropical Red Hatters The Tropical Red Hatters will continue to meet all year-long with our standard first Wednesday of the month meeting when we can. We usually go out to eat after the meeting. We have done a review of our
inactive members. If you have not paid your $6.00 annual dues and/or have not attended a recent monthly meeting, you are considered “inactive”. During the summer, we will watch for local happenings and take advantage of the opportunities as they become available.

From the wastewater TreatmentPlant
Only the three ‘P’s – pee, poo, and paper – should be flushed down the toilet. Other items including wet wipes, rags, sanitary products, nappies, and personal items such as cotton buds can block sewer pipes, and lead to sewer spills. Sewer spills can mean raw sewage entering waterways, streets, or even people’s homes. If the blockage is in the sewer pipes within your property, you are also responsible for the cost of clearing the blocked pipe. So-called “flushable wipes” are increasingly causing problems in the sewer system as they do not break down quickly in pipes like toilet paper. Cooking oils and fats should also never be poured down the sink, as they can build up in pipes and cause blockages. Collect them in a tin can and freeze them before placing them in the bin or in the compost.

southeastern Guide Dogs in Review for 2020
The Hot Diggity Dog “Thank You” for donating to the South-eastern Guide Dogs had to be cancelled, so at one of the last Saturday Coffees, Sue Weaver and Vicki Williams raffled off t-shirts, Tervis mugs, bags, and bandanas to those attending. TI did raise over $5,000, so the park will get to name another guide dog.
southeastern Guide Dog walkathon Results
A huge thank you goes out to Tropic Isles. Again, we raised enough money to name a puppy - $5,151. Con-gratulations! The naming honor will go to Beverly O’Brien, who has been an unwavering supporter of the cause. Without your generosity and the hard work done by our
volunteers, this would not have happened. The Saturday morning coffee crowd is our rock! These wonderful people donate every Sat-urday throughout the year, including the summertime. The t-shirts that needed to be switched out for people did not happen because of the COVID-19 virus. Rest assured that if you need a different shirt size, it will happen in the fall. Thank you all again.

WeWillRememberMarch2020… it was March 2020 ... The streets were empty, the shops closed, people couldn’t get out. But spring did not know, and the flowers began to bloom, the sun shone, the birds sang, the swallows would soon arrive, the sky was blue, the morning arrived early. it was March 2020 ... Young people had to study online and find occupations at home. People could no longer go shopping or go to the hairdresser. Health care workers continued to work in hospitals and people continued to get sick, but spring did not know. The time to go to the garden arrived and the grass greened. it was March 2020 ... People had been put in lockdown to protect grandparents, families and children. No more meetings, meals, or family celebrations. The fear became real and the days were therefore similar, but spring did not know. Apples, cherry trees, and others bloomed. The leaves grew. People started reading, playing with their families, learning a lan-guage, singing on the balcony, inviting neighbors to do the same, being supportive and focusing on other values. People realized the importance of health, of suffering, of this world that had stopped, but spring didn’t know. The flowers gave way to the fruit, the birds made their nests, the swallows had arrived. Then the day of liberation came. People found out on TV that the virus had lost. People took to the streets, sang, cried, kissed their neighbors, without masks or gloves. That’s when summer came, because spring didn’t know. He continued to be there despite every-thing, despite the virus, fear, and death. Because spring didn’t know, it taught people the power of life. Everything’s going to get better. Stay home, protect yourself, and enjoy life.

5WaystoStrengthenYoursocial Connections
(Excerpts taken from Psychology Today, Inc.com, and Sixtyandme.com) Many older adults experience loneliness and social isolation, but it’s not too late to forge new relationships. Getting older has its perks (travel and leisure time), but it can also bring some trials. leaving a career, moving out of a home, or losing a spouse or friendcantakeamajortollonourwell-being.Manyolderadultsend up living alone again for the first time since their 20s—or maybe ever. Sound familiar? You’re in good company. Among adults 60 years and older, 43 percent experience loneliness. You don’t technically have to be alone to feel lonely. Nearly 63 percent of those who reported feeling lonely were married. It’s important to know that everyone feels lonely at times, no matter your age, but feeling lone-ly when you’re older, especially if you’re going through major life changes, isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, it’s a healthy response to a loss of a relationship. Even though you can’t replace a lost loved one and the timetable is different for everyone, these intense feelings of loneliness should start to decrease after three or so months. A more serious problem occurs when older adults aren’t just lonely—but also socially isolated, which is different than loneliness.
The Difference Between loneliness and social isolation—and why it Matters Loneliness is a subjective feeling. Social isolation is an objective, measurable issue that occurs when you’re unable to meaningfully connect with other people. Both can harm your health, but having few social connections may be worse than feeling alone. The AARP Foundation estimates 17 percent of older adults do experience so-cial isolation. The main causes include lack of transportation, poor health, a shrinking social network, and inability to access resources like technology. We’re also living longer these days, and many women are outliving their spouses. Families are spreading out across the country more than ever before. So, you could still live in Massachu-setts while your kids and grandkids live in California, which limits your social support system. Lacking social connections can have a major impact on your health. It’s also been linked to increased risk of heart disease, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and even early death. Loneliness and social isolation shouldn’t be taken lightly. The good news is just as you can take steps to improve your fitness, there are actions you can take to build social connections. Try these strategies.
Strategy#1:ShowPeopleYouCare Small everyday actions, like asking the cashier at the grocery store how their day is going, makes people feel appreciated and awakens you to other people’s involvement in the world. If you’re able, check out local volunteer opportunities. Visiting with homebound folks, for example, helps them and you. Research shows that volunteering is linked to improvements in mental and physical health in older adults, and a decrease in feelings of loneliness.
strategy #2: Become a student again Look into adult education programs in your area. Community centers, libraries, and local colleges often offer courses from painting to computer skills that will help you expand your mind—and meet new friends. If you’re lucky enough to have a museum or historical society in your area, inquire about talks and other special events.
Strategy#3:FindaFitnessFamily Exercise classes for older adults are a great way to connect with like-minded people while getting some exercise. For many people, it has improved their quality of life, helped them make new friends, and helped them cope with grief and health problems.
strategy #4: embrace online Communities (in Moderation) Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to virtually connect with family and old friends—and even make new ones. You can send emails, share photos, and chat with people all around the country. However, social media can be a “mixed bag”. If you’re just sitting on the computer at home, it’s not the same as interacting with other people in real life. So, you can use social media, but don’t rely on it. Try to balance your digital communication with a face-to-face interaction at least once or twice per week. The closeness of relationships is more important for health and well-being than the number of friends you have.
Strategy#5:TakeAdvantageofAvailableResources Think about what’s keeping you from connecting with others. Once you have an idea of your biggest barriers, search for resources that can help you with a solution. Here are just a few examples:• Dealingwithaninjuryorillness? Gettingthepropercarecanhelp
you recover faster or manage your symptoms. Whether you need physical therapy after surgery, cardiac rehab after a heart attack, or nutrition counseling for diabetes, check with your health plan or medicare.gov for coverage.
• Strugglingwithcaregiving? Takingcareofyourselfwillultimatelyput you in a better position to care for your loved one. Make a tough job easier with help from a support group.
• Can’tdriveanymore? Lookfortransportationoptions, suchascar, taxi, or rideshare services. Your community may also have special transportation programs or discounts. Check with your local agency on aging for help.
• Feelingsadderthanusual? Tellyourprimarycaredoctor, whomaybe able to connect you with the support you need.
Anyone can reduce feelings of loneliness by staying socially en-gaged and making a daily effort to nurture healthy relationships.
