They are ROLF and NORMA BAERBIG who will be part- time residents from Winnipeg, Manito- ba (Canada). The Baerbigs are looking forward to spending their winters in Tropic Isles and getting away from the cold and snow in Manitoba. The Baer- bigs owned a home in St. Pete’s Beach from 1989-2006 and then in Treasure Island from 2006-2017 when they decided to downsize. Norma began searching online for homes on the water in 55+ communities with the help of their realtor and discovered Tropic Isles. They have a son, Quiton (42) and a daughter, Lisa (45). They also have 4 grandchildren-- Josh (25), Taylor (12), Teagan (7), and Cassidy (4). Rolf and Norma owned a construction company doing basements/cellars where Norma acted as the Vice President and worked as the secretary of the company. Norma also worked in a taxation center in Winnipeg. The Baerbigs enjoy cruising, socializing, and have a love of music. Rolf also likes to dabble in little projects around the house. Norma is quite adept on the computer. Norma and Rolf share their home with Pippin—an 8-year old, very talented and intelligent poodle. Please give a warm, Tropic Isles welcome to Rolf, Norma, and Pippin. From Ontario, Canada here are two new faces. They are KEITH and JANICE DEY at 360 Tampico Dr. They summer at their lake house on Rice Lake and still have a home in Courtice, east of Toron- to. They are both second generation snowbirds. Keith’s parents came to Panama City Beach every winter for 30 years and Janice’s mother, Effie Duncan, has owned in this park for 25 years. They came down when they had holidays, mainly at Christmas, un- til they finally both retired from Gen- eral Motors. Keith and Janice bought their home in 2017, a week before Irma. They didn’t even have the keys yet when Irma hit Tropic Isles but, thankfully they only lost their big, beautiful palm tree which landed down the road. Keith and Janice bought a boat this year and can’t wait to ex- plore the Bay and the surrounding islands and do some fishing. Keith also enjoys antique cars and has 3 of them. Janice spends her free time painting, doing crafts, crocheting, and knitting. They both enjoy biking and walking. The Deys have a blended family of 5 daughters—Samantha, Veronica, Haley, Brittney, and Kelsey and 5 grandchildren-Theoren (15), Autumn (12), Jace (5), Oliver (2), and Murphy (1). They are planning on coming down every year in the middle of November, flying home at Christmas for 10 days, and then coming back until the end of March. Janice and Keith have met a lot of wonderful people in this park and feel very blessed to be able to call Tropic Isles their winter home. Please give Keith and Janice a warm Tropic Isles’ welcome. ~ Thought for the day ~ A good person pays back favors. A smart person pays it forward! look What’s coming to the Sunshine Bridge!

Lights will glow along the Sunshine Skyway Bridge with the installation of thousands of color-changing lights. The project began in 2017 and will be completed this fall. 1800 LED light fixtures will brighten the columns, main span, and side spans of the bridge when the sun goes down. There are 8 lighting patterns of the color-changing abilities including Patriotic and New Year’s themes which will add a festive touch. The bridge is being illumi-nated for aesthetics and safety purposes. Floodlights will act as a safety and security feature under the bridge. The lights are being funded by toll funds from drivers who use the bridge.

letter from the editorSchool’S in SeSSion

School zones are put in place to ensure the safety of children in and around schools. While class is in session, drivers are re-sponsible for maintaining safety and awareness on the streets surrounding schools. All children should be able to walk or bike to and from class without fear of being hit by passing vehicles. As drivers, we must not be careless around school zones. We must understand the traffic laws for these locations and follow them at all times. Here’s a reference to those that may question when stopping for a school bus in the opposite direction is optional. Please watch out for children walking or riding bikes everywhere as well.

A few precautions go a long way toward keeping children safe, now that school is back in session:• Don’t block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting

to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you. This could put them in the path of moving traffic.

• In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.

• Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign.

• Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas.

• Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.• If you’re driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance

than if you were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the yellow lights start flashing. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

• Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children.

• If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extend-ed, traffic must stop.

• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children. Stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.

• Be alert! Children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks.

NICKNAMES If Laura, Kate, and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate, and Sarah. If Mike, Dave, and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Bubba, and Wildman.

EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave, and John will each throw in $20, even though the bill is only $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit that they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators.

MONEY A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn’t need but is on sale.

BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and tooth-paste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. The average number of items in the typical woman’s bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.

ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

FUTURE A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn’t. A man marries a woman expecting that she won’t change, but she does.

DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.

SLEEP Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night.

OFFSPRING Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears, and hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY A married man should forget his mistakes. There’s no use in two people remembering the same thing!

chuRch chuckleS After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, “That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had been teaching my three-year old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord’s Prayer for several evenings at bedtime. She would repeat after me the lines from the prayer. Finally, she decided to go solo. I listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer: “Lead us not into temptation,” she prayed, “but deliver us from E-mail.”
One particular four-year-old prayed, “And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” One bright little girl replied, “Because people are sleep-ing.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother, Joel, were sitting together in church. Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had had enough. “You’re not supposed to talk out loud in church.” “Why? Who’s going to stop me?” Joel asked. Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, “See those two men standing by the door? They’re hushers.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.’ Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, “Ryan, you be Jesus!”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. “Daddy, what happened to him?” the son asked. “He died and went to Heaven,” the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, “Did God throw him back down?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” “I wouldn’t know what to say,” the girl replied.  “Just say what you hear Mommy say,” the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”

SYMPATheTic huBBY This guy is sitting at home alone when he hears a knock on the front door. There are two sheriff’s deputies there. He asks if there is a problem. One of the deputies asks if he is married, and if so, can he see a picture of his wife. The guy says “sure “ and shows him a picture of his wife. The sheriff says, “I’m very sorry sir, but it looks like your wife’s been hit by a truck.” The guy says, “ I know, but she has a great personality and she’s an excellent cook. “

idea to Ponder…. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty, and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

Personal Safety tip Courtesy of Crime Prevention Unit,

Manatee County Sheriff’s OfficeEver walk to your car and feel like someone was

watching you and then find out someone was? Have you ever been woken up in the middle of the night by something you heard and then find someone in your home? And, finally, do you have a vehicle with a keyless remote? Why would I ask that last question? Simple: If you have a key-less remote for your vehicle, then you have your own personal alarm system. Have your keys in your hand when walking to and from your vehicle, as well as next to you when you are in bed. If someone approaches you in a parking lot or tries to break into your home while you are in bed sleeping, all you have to do is hit the alarm on your keyless remote to bring attention to your-self. In most cases, the suspect will run away because they don’t want to be seen. If not, it will at least bring some attention to you and maybe get enough eyes turned in your direction which will hopefully result in someone coming to your aid. So, if you have it, why not go ahead and USE IT? It’s just one more tool you can use to protect yourself from becoming the victim of a crime.

Thank you for all the cards and calls received during Marilyn’s long illness and after her passing on July 12. During her last months, she received wonderful care by the doctors and nurses at Moffit Hospital and by hospice both in Florida and in Massa-chusetts. Her children and I were with her at her peaceful passing. We have been in Tropic Isles for 20 years and Marilyn was a close friend to many. A lot of you will miss her, but not as much as her family will.

Neighbors helping Neighbors(NhN)

NHN continues to help with any resident needs. Our volunteers will aid residents with various jobs including weeding, yard work, power washing, clearing carports, simple maintenance jobs, and compliance issues. Specific reasons for our help include: illness, aging, financial difficulties, or just to lend a helping hand. We have compiled a list of vendors and various agencies that can also offer help and guidance. Check out our bulletin board in the Auditorium where we list them. Call the people listed below or the Office personnel if you need help with anything.

Reading Material for Vets

We continue to collect reading materials for Vets. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The Library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are duplicates and those books that are too old to shelve. There is a collection box in our library. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it will be greatly appreciated.

a great lesson on Stress A young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, ‘Half empty or half full?’ She fooled them all. “How heavy is this glass of water?” she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.  She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued, “And that’s the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.” “As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Pick them up again tomorrow if you must.”

George Mendonsa, the ecstatic sailor, is shown kissing a woman celebrating the end of WWII. He was shown kiss-ing Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant in a nurse’s uniform, on Aug. 14, 1945. Known as V-J Day, it was the day Japan surrendered to the United States. George, the sailor, was on leave and had a first date with a cousin to his new brother-in-law. Friedman was celebrating in Times Square as the world learned that the war was over. According to Friedman, as New Yorkers revered in jubilation, the soldier spun her around and gave her a kiss. The sculpture is located at the corner of Bayfront and Gulf Stream Drive at the Sarasota bayfront near Marina Jack’s Marina.

~Public Safety Reminder~ Please remember to be safe while walking or driving your golf carts at night. While you are walking your dog, taking a stroll, or riding your bike wear light or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight. We have narrow streets and as we age our eyesight fades a little. When You Must evacuate If you are at Tropic Isles when an evacuation order is given, don’t panic. Move at a steady pace and be sure you leave enough time to get to where you will weather the storm. DO NOT take chances with your life by staying at home or waiting until the weather turns bad!• Make sure your destination is not within a zone that has been

ordered to evacuate.• Take enough supplies for your family including medications.• Fill your gas tank.• Take your pets. Don’t forget their supplies.• Take important papers, including your driver’s license, special

medical information, insurance policies, your insurance agent’s name and number, and property inventories.

• Take irreplaceable items, such as photos or keepsakes.• Bring in loose furniture, trashcans, flowerpots, etc. that can be

blown around in the wind.• Let friends and relatives know where you are going.• Make sure your neighbors have a safe ride.• Turn off your electricity, water, and gas, if officials tell you to do

so.• Lock your windows and doors.• Stay tuned to your local radio and television station for emer-

gency broadcasts.Leaving Coastal Areas

If you are leaving the area, remember to take supplies with you. Move inland away from the storm surge and inland flooding, but it is not recommended that residents try to leave the region. Roads will be heavily congested, and you run the risk of being caught on the highway without a safe refuge or running into the storm if it takes a different track.

Hotel or Motel? If you plan to go to a hotel or motel, you will need to check for availability and make your reservation well in advance. Some hotels/motels have standing reservation hurricane programs, and some relax their pet restrictions in an emergency. Again, make sure your destination is not in an evacuation zone.

if you are at tropic isles when an evacuation order is issued, you Will be required to evacuate. Be prepared!

~~~hurricane Preparedness~~~top 10 things to do BefoRe the Storm
1. Make your Family Disaster Plan. It’s not hard. Talk with your fam-ily. If you need help, go online to www.tampabayprepares.org and www.floridadisaster.org or call your local emergency man-agement agency or local chapter of the American Red Cross.
2. Refer to the Hurricane Evacuation Map inside the local Disas-ter Guide. Locate where you live and your evacuation zone. Determine if and when you would have to evacuate.
ReMeMBeR: all mobile home residents must evacuate, regardless of location. If you need help determining your zone, go online or call your local emergency management office BEFORE THE STORM THREATENS.
3. Decide NOW where you would go if ordered to evacuate (a friend or relative, a hotel or motel, or as a last resort, a public shelter or out of the region). REMEMBER, if you are going to leave the area or go to a hotel, do not delay. Determine your route, leave early, and travel the shortest distance possible. Think tens of miles, not hundreds.
4. Build/Check your Disaster Supply Kit and obtain any items you need.
5. Make plans and purchase materials, such as storm shutters, to protect your home before the storm.
6. Keep your home in good repair. Tacking down loose roofing, securing all loose outdoor articles, trimming trees, and keep-ing gutters clean are good places to start.
7. Purchase a battery-powered weather alert radio and a non-electric land-line phone. Even though phone service may not be disturbed, cordless phones will not work during power outages. Cell phone signals will be overburdened, so make sure your friends and relatives know where you plan to be during the storm. Save them the heartache of looking for you.
8. Inventory your property and possessions (on paper or com-puter) and take a video survey of your property. Store the inventory with insurance and other important papers in a safe place and send a copy to a relative out of the area.
9. Make sure your street address number is clearly marked on your home.
10. Whether you rent or own your home, review your insurance with your agent now.
SUMMeR fUN! Doug and Tina Woulf were in California for her daughter’s wed-ding. Seen here are Tina’s daughter and her husband as of July 14! They also traveled to the Wente Winery in Livermore, California!  It is the oldest winery and Tina’s daughter and her husband are members!
Doug and Tina Woulf also traveled to their nephew, Kyle Amell’s, wedding in Boulder Creek, CA.  The venue  was in the redwood forest just like her daughter’s. It was beautiful, but a little chilly at night for Tina-- 50’s!
Cindy and Bob Shaw spent a month of their two-month vacation, camping in their travel trailer in the northern wilderness and coastal cities of Maine. A second visit to Acadia National Park was a must! Lots of hiking, sightseeing, and lobster-eating took place.
