Abbie and Ashton will be married onNov. 14 in the First United MethodistChurch in Hickory.

Special guests attending the party wereApril Clark of Hickory, mother of thebride-to-be; Sharon Molleur, mother ofthe prospective bridegroom; grandmoth-ers, Naomi Slate and Bessie Ashburn.Other family members included MyraSlate and Judy Easter.

The serving table held a tiered cakestand topped with a silver bowl of whiteroses and hydrangeas, accented with rib-bon. The tiers held decorated cupcakes toresemble a wedding cake.

MAHS Class of 1964 celebrates at reunionMembers of the Mount Airy High School Class of

1964 gathered at Cross Creek Country Club tocelebrate its 45th reunion on Aug. 21 to relive fond mem-ories and be reunited with old friends. Class reunionshave occurred every five years, spearheaded by TomFawcett, Wanda McHone McAlexander, Judy BookerBarham, Ellen Goad Adkisson, Ron Greenwood, SusanRees King, Barbara Lovill Hooks and Linda SpaneKniskern.

Many classmates attended the Mount Airy/Starmountfootball game the Friday before the reunion, watchinglast year’s undefeated state champion Granite Bears startthis season with another victory. Saturday was a day forremembering not only the classmates’ past but also that ofMount Airy, with classmates strolling through downtownand getting together at the Mount Airy Museum for aguided tour conducted by classmate Tom Fawcett’s wifeMary.

The main event at Cross Creek Country Club includeda social hour and dinner and a class picture taken by Stan-ley King, who had taken all seven of the reunion pictures.After dinner class members gave tributes and told storiesabout the “good-ole days” gone by. Leonard Utt invitedRobert Holder, one of the admired teachers, who gave abrief history of the things he remembered about the Classof ’64, including the day President John F. Kennedy wasassassinated in 1963. Holder said that the television in hisclass for teaching purposes allowed students to watch theevents leading up to the shots fired from the book deposi-tory, ending with the announcement that the 35th presi-dent had been assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald.

On Sunday some classmates gathered at the GoldenCoral for breakfast to extend their time together and talkabout the events of the weekend. A tribute was made tothose class members who served their country during theVietnam War. Deceased members were remembered, theyare, Lloyd Dalton, Dick Chapman, Opal Hawks, GreyClifton, Janet Dowell, Bill Stanley, Bill Wallace, FredGoins, Kenneth Easter, Peggy Pender, Pat Cox, TommieGail Nixon, Linda Brinkley and S.A. Brintle.

Surry Garden Club landscapes flagpole area in DobsonMembers of the Friends and Flowers of Surry Garden

Club have undertaken a landscaping project at theflagpole area in the county parking lot in downtown Dobson.

Weeds and grass had covered the entire area but withthe help of a community service worker these were dug upand removed. Wayne Hothem, husband of club memberMary Margaret Hothem, worked in compost to the freshsoil in preparation for planting and Steve McKeaver, hus-band of Opie McKeaver, helped remove old soil and turf.Stones encircling the flag pole were also cleaned

The garden club members then planted Blue Fescuegrass, Muhly grass and dwarf plume grass, adding beds ofcolorful annuals.

The group has completed Phase 1 of the long term land-scaping project.

In addition to this project, club members have alsoplaced container gardens at the post office and conducted alitter pick-up on Cody Trail.

The garden club was organized in 2005 and chartered in2006 with Modern Gardeners of Mount Airy as their spon-sors. The club officers are: Dana Workman, president;Sheila Cave, vice president and program chairman;Frances Draughn, secretary; and Patricia Draughn, treasur-er.

The club members meet the last Tuesday evening duringthe months of January through November at 7 p.m. Thereare some openings for new members. Call 386-4228 or366-4545 for more information.

Several group homes from the area participated inVacation Bible School at Piney Grove Baptist

Church on Sept. 19.Forty-five students, 15 caregivers and 30 volunteers

participated. The theme was “Gadgets Garage” basedon a robot named “Gizmo,” who was built by Craig andNorma Sprinkle. Live robots were Daniel Ingram andJohn Marion.

As the group arrived, breakfast was served to theworkers by Beth Gordon. She was also in charge ofsnacks for the students.

The attendees had the opportunity to play gamesprovided by Dennis Miller. They also made crafts se-lected by Jean Johnson. These were picture framesholding photos that Tommy Haymore took of each stu-dent. They also learned songs and played the crystalbells with the help of Matt and Clare Johnson. Biblestories were told by Sharon Bledsoe and Harlene andClark Atkins.

The school concluded with a presentation of “Amaz-ing Grace” on the crystal bells.
