Ten bunnies and hares were hop-ping all around the ballroom at
Cross Creek County Club Fridayevening entertaining the guests and try-ing to raise donations for the MountAiry Museum of Regional History.
When donations were tabulated forthe Bunny Hop, Dr. Steve Yokeley andTraci Hamilton had raised the largestamount of money and therefore werecrowned King and Queen.
Kelly Epperson of Radio StationWPAQ emceed the evening and pre-sented the winners to the audience ina coronation ceremony. All candidateswere on stage as Epperson introducedthe five bunnies, Traci Hamilton,Lenise Lynch, Betty Ann Collins,Twyla Sickmiller and Eleanor Powell.The five hares were Steve Yokeley,Ben Cooke, Aaron Routh, Terry
Strickland and Dennis Williams.Epperson had questions for each con-
testant. This, of course, was unre-hearsed. Asking Terry Strickland whathe expected to receive for participatingin the contest. Terry, who reluctanlywore the rabbit ears, responded, “Ab-solutely nothing!”
The girls were presented arm bou-quets of red roses and the guys receivedcopies of Play Boy magazine. The queenwas crowned with a jeweled tiara andSteve had a jewel crown. Ben Cooke,who wore a beautiful white rabbit head-dress most of the evening was elected,“Mr. Debonair” and I was wrapped in ablue and white feather boa as “MissCongeniality.”
The ten contestants raised about$12,000 and another $10,000 came fromticket sales.
The museum board was extremely hap-py with the turnout and the amount collect-ed by the bunnies and hares during the pastmonth.
Many of the dinner guests said it wasa fun evening for everyone.
“We ‘hare’ there might be another oneof these hopping parties again next year.”

Spencer Hodges, an eighth-gradestudent at Millennium Charter Acade-my, recently won the school-level com-petition of the National GeographicBee, as well as a chance at a $25,000college scholarship.
The school-level bee, at which stu-dents answered oral questions on geog-raphy, was the first round in the 22ndannual National Geographic Bee. Thenext round of the Bee, the state level,was held on April 9. Schools across thenation participate in the geographicbee, and school winners, includingSpencer, will now take a written test.Winners at the state level are providedan all-expenses paid trip to Washington,D.C., to participate in the nationalchampionship rounds in May.
The first-place national winner willreceive a $25,000 college scholarship, alifetime membership in the NationalGeographic Society and a trip to theGalapagos Islands.
Questions presented at the bee werequite difficult, and the winning ques-tion was “After the United States andFrance, which island country generatesthe most power from nuclear energy?”The correct answer is Japan.

WINSTON-SALEM — Six Shoals El-ementary students, three Westfield Ele-mentary students and one Cedar RidgeElementary student recently representedSurry County in the 2009 North CarolinaElementary Honors Chorus.
The 181 member chorus of fourth, fifthand some sixth graders from all across thestate of North Carolina performed at theStevens Center this past November underthe baton of guest conductor/clinicianCheryl Dupont, artistic director of the NewOrleans Children’s Chorus and YouthChorale, before a standing room only crowdof music educators, parents, administrators,and other supporters. The event was a part ofthe North Carolina Music Educators Confer-ence which is held yearly in Winston-Salem.
One hundred and two elementaryschools from the state of North Carolinasubmitted tapes of individual students’ voic-es to be judged by college professors, andseventy of those schools received notifica-tion of qualified singers. Each school couldsubmit only six voices to be judged basedon tone quality, pitch accuracy, rhythmic ac-curacy, diction, and interpretation.
Three of the seventy schools representedhad all six of their students chosen, includ-ing Shoals Elementary. The repertoire fortheir concert consisted of a German Bachpiece, a spiritual, a folk song, both an envi-ronmental and a modern song, and the audi-tion piece which was entirely in Hebrew.
The unusual but beautiful audition
piece “Ani Ma’amin,” a traditional He-brew song, recalled the account of theHolocaust during World War II wheremany Jewish children confronted death inthe gas chamber by singing this familiarHebrew melody. The translated Hebrewwords “I believe the Messiah will comeno matter what happens to me or howlong I must wait” were sung over andover, according to eye witness accounts,
until the last breaths were taken.Upon notification of acceptance, the stu-
dents received and rehearsed with their mu-sic instructors the six selections and thencombined for a joint rehearsal and clinic inWinston-Salem with Dupont for a two-dayevent of perfecting and performing their mu-sic.
