Dec, 8 and 9 in the seasonally decoratedBlue Ridge Dining Room.

Independent Living residents invitedfamily members and guests on Wednesdayevening with Assisted Living residentsenjoying the company of their families

and guests on Thursday evening.A sumptuous buffet was served by

Janet Chilton, executive chef, and herstaff.

Robbie Vance, chaplain at MountainValley Hospice, accompanied CarrollHooker, facilities services director, andElizabeth Folger, concierge, as they sangholiday favorites. Brack Llewellyn, mem-ber services director, gave a stirring recita-tion of the Christmas Story. RidgeCrestresident Estelle Belton read a holidayfavorite, “Twas The Night BeforeChristmas”.

Santa made a visit and posed with theguests during the celebration.

Guests were encouraged to tour thecommunity and view the six Christmastrees that were decorated by local floristsand displayed throughout the facility.

ABWA honors two membersJoan Gammons is the Granite City Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association Woman of the Year for 2010. Joan, who is retired from NC Granite after50 years, is a charter member and has held a number of offices and volunteered on numerous committees since the chapter was started in 1979. Vickie Pickard(right) presented the award. Surry County Register of Deeds Carolyn Comer was selected as the Granite City Chapter of the American Business Women’s AssociationBusiness Associate of the Year for 2010. She was nominated by Portia Oakley (right), who described Carolyn as “a shining example of what it means to be a greatprofessional, Christian, and friend.”


Family and friends gathered at the East Bend Community Centerin East Bend on Nov. 13 to celebrate the joyful 100th birthday ofMary Elizabeth Tatum, of Pinnacle.

Mrs. Tatum was beautifully dressed in a white suit with red cor-sage and accessories. She was chauffeured to the celebration by herson Eugene in his 1954 Cadillac and was escorted into the hall bytwo sons to the song “Isn’t She Lovely.”

Mrs. Tatum was the wife of the late William Howard Tatum foralmost 70 years. To this union they were blessed with five children.This gathering of friends was hosted by her daughters and sons,Evelyn T. Anthony (late Howard) of Pfafftown, Christine T. Porter(late Roy) of Pinnacle, William P. Tatum (the Rev. Dr. Juanita B.) ofWinston-Salem, Richard Eugene Tatum (Juanita A.) of Pfafftownand the Rev. James Cornelius Tatum (Ollie B.) of East Bend.

A tribute of a single rose was presented by each grandchild,great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild to represent each gen-eration in a rainbow of colors while Ms. Rachel Cheff serenadedMrs. Tatum with “Give Me Flowers.”

“Big Mama,” as she is affectionately called by 13 living (onedeceased) grandchildren, brought laughter and praise to her manyyears of “mothering.” She has 35 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

The celebration included five generations of the Tatum family.Family members traveled from local areas, Philadelphia,Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, Kentucky and Florida toshow their respect and appreciation for Mrs. Tatum. The occasionwas festive with a delicious buffet dinner, cake and souvenirs for allattendees.

Catering was done by Jennifer Moser, video recording by JohnRobert Smith and photography by Lundon B. Sims.

‘Lowe’s Girls’ gather for Christmas party

Family and friends gathered at the East Bend Community Centerin East Bend on Nov. 13 to celebrate the joyful 100th birthday ofMary Elizabeth Tatum, of Pinnacle.

Mrs. Tatum was beautifully dressed in a white suit with red cor-sage and accessories. She was chauffeured to the celebration by herson Eugene in his 1954 Cadillac and was escorted into the hall bytwo sons to the song “Isn’t She Lovely.”

Mrs. Tatum was the wife of the late William Howard Tatum foralmost 70 years. To this union they were blessed with five children.This gathering of friends was hosted by her daughters and sons,Evelyn T. Anthony (late Howard) of Pfafftown, Christine T. Porter(late Roy) of Pinnacle, William P. Tatum (the Rev. Dr. Juanita B.) ofWinston-Salem, Richard Eugene Tatum (Juanita A.) of Pfafftownand the Rev. James Cornelius Tatum (Ollie B.) of East Bend.

A tribute of a single rose was presented by each grandchild,great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild to represent each gen-eration in a rainbow of colors while Ms. Rachel Cheff serenadedMrs. Tatum with “Give Me Flowers.”

“Big Mama,” as she is affectionately called by 13 living (onedeceased) grandchildren, brought laughter and praise to her manyyears of “mothering.” She has 35 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

The celebration included five generations of the Tatum family.Family members traveled from local areas, Philadelphia,Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, Kentucky and Florida toshow their respect and appreciation for Mrs. Tatum. The occasionwas festive with a delicious buffet dinner, cake and souvenirs for allattendees.

Cadets from North Surry High School AFJROTC performed a flag raising ceremo-ny at The Mount Airy News after retiring the one that had been flying at the newspaper.

The four cadets performing the flag retirement are Corps Commander Cody Byrd,Cadet Captain Jeff Ellis, Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Shawn Eubanks, and Cadet Airman FirstClass Jermey Walker.

Lt. Col John Bowes said the citizens and business owners of Mount Airy and SurryCounty are very patriotic and they show it by flying the flag of our great nation. Our flagrepresents a union of 50 states with a shared responsibility to keep our country strong.It represents the sacrifices of military veterans so that we may enjoy liberty and justicefor all. The symbol of our nation should always fly proudly, in a position of honor, andnever in the dark.

The cadets have set a goal to become stewards of proper flag protocol in the com-munity.

Cadet Commander Cody Byrd explains; "We want to help our community byexplaining the proper way to fly the flag and offering our assistance when a flag shouldbe retired due to weathering, fading, or anything else that is disrespectful to our colors".

Cadet 2nd lieutenant Shawn Eubanks, the corps public affairs officer has been taskedwith notifying individuals and businesses by letter as a friendly reminder that their flagshould be retired or displayed in a different manner. “We hope to not offend anyone inour attempt to see every flag in our community flying proudly as a symbol of the great-est nation on earth", explains Bowes. “We were honored to do our first flag retirementtoday at the Mount Airy News building".

The Woman’s Club of Mount Airy hada craft session at its meeting and learnedto make dish towel Angels at their lastmeeting. Each year the club holds an artsbased meeting and items made by clubmembers are entered into the District ArtsFestival. Winners from that contest thengo on to the GFWC-NC State ArtsFestival which will be held in March atCampbell University.

Club members also collected cannedfood and money which was donated toYokefellow for the holidays.

The Woman’s Club of Mount Airy is avolunteer community service based cluband one of three General Federation ofWoman’s Clubs of North Carolina activein Mount Airy.

GFWC is an international organizationof community-based women’s clubs,which has been working for over 110years to address the most pressing needsof their communities and the world. It isheadquartered in Washington, D.C.
