Chloe Easter, a fourth grader at Franklin Elementary, wanted to do something nice for others and so she recently collected more than one hundred new stufed animals from friends and family. She then delivered them to Surry SCAN, The Children’s Center in Dob-son, Northern Hospital of Surry County, and The Shepherd’s House. “Chloe has such a big heart,” said her teacher Jamie Martin. “She is a very kind and generous child.” Pictured above, Easter gives many of the stufed animals to a Surry SCAN representative.

SCC alumni awarded prestigious scholarshipStaff Report

DOBSON — An alumnus of Surry Community College and East Surry High School has been awarded a full scholarship to develop as an artist at a nationally acclaimed center for craft education.

Justin Allison, who studied fine arts at SCC, is one of two students at Ap-palachian State University awarded scholarships for a two-week session this summer at the Penland School of Crafts near Spruce Pine, NC.

The scholarships are awarded by the Steele-Reese Foundation and cover all tuition and boarding expenses for a ses-sion of the recipient’s choice.

Allison will use the scholarship to study wood firing, building upon a love of creating ceramic art he developed during classes at SCC and ASU.

The two-week session in June and July will give Allison valuable experience as

an artist that will help prepare him for a career in teaching. He is expected to graduate this December with a bache-lor’s degree in art education, and hopes to teach art in either a middle school or high school after graduation.

“During my time at Penland I am go-ing to attempt to explore the wood fir-ing technique and make art for personal enjoyment and personal exploration,” Allison said. “Attending the school looks great on a résumé and it also al-lows me to explore more of my personal art making, which should reflect well in my future teaching position.”

Founded in 1929, the Penland School of Crafts provides opportunities to study in one, two, and eight-week im-mersive workshops taught by full-time studio artists as well as faculty from nearby colleges and universities. The school enrolls approximately 1,200 stu-dents in workshops each year and also

welcomes more than 14,000 visitors an-nually. Penland’s stimulating and trans-formative environment allows students to grow as artists and produce work that often exceeds their expectations.

Allison credits his love of fine art to his teachers in Surry County. He was first challenged to develop as an artist by art teacher Bryan Hall at East Surry High School, which motivated him to continue his studies at SCC. While en-rolled at the college, Allison joined the student art club and was inspired to pursue a four-year degree in the field.

“It was my time taking real college art classes at SCC that reinforced the idea

that I could have a career in art,” he said. “Richard Montgomery is someone who really pushed me into art and he is also solely responsible for sparking my interest in ceramics. My time at SCC was wonderful; I made many friends, built professional relationships, and studied hard. All of these things really prepared me for my transfer to ASU.”

SCC offers numerous fine arts cours-es for students enrolled in the associate in arts and associate in fine arts degree programs, both of which are designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year school. Courses are available in ceramics, drawing, design, photogra-phy, sculpture, painting, watercolor, art history, and art appreciation.

Northern Hospital volunteers honored at banquet


The new oicers of the Northern Hospital of Surry County Volunteer Board were named at the annual volunteer appreciation banquet. They are, from left, Bill Lundy, Fran Beek, Sue Stone, Madeline Gar-dener and Margaret Mattews.


Marty Snow receives the award for the most hours worked as a volunteer at NHSC. He has worked 574 hours in the past year. Pat Busick presented him with the award.


Coley Jones is presented with the Extra Mile Award at the NHSC Volunteer Award Banquet Tuesday night at Cross Creek. Kaye Puckett presented him with the award. He has volunteered 1,804 hours since he began volunteering at the hospital in 2003.


Margaret Matthews was given the President’s Award at the Volunteer Banquet for Northern Hospital of Surry County by Pat Busick on Tuesday night.


Philip Mendlehall plays the roll of Elvis at the Annual Volunteer Appre-ciation Banquet for NHSC at Cross Creek on Tuesday night.


Gary and Charlotte York were the sponsors of the volunteer apprecia-tion banquet.
