Betty Blackmon thought she wouldbe joining a couple of friends for

breakfast at the Dairy Center on June 8.But when she got inside, a crowd waswaiting to treat her at a 79th birthdayparty. Balloons decorated the booths andbirthday refreshments were placed on aserving table.

Waiting for the honoree to arrive on thescene were Roger Higgins of Pittsburgh,Pa. Ed and Claudette Cook, Linda Reed,Jack Austin, Emmett Forrest, Cindy andWayne Martin, Faye Barker, Terry andConnie Freeman and Margaret Hiatt.

Freddy Hiatt, the owner, enjoyed wait-ing on the crowd.

Betty turned in an order for a smallpancake and that’s what she got — a verysmall pancake about the size of a silverdollar.

The ladies brought homemade dessertsof cake, brownies and cupcakes. And, ofcourse, there was plenty of coffee.

The group had a wonderful, fun time.

Dorothy Hayescelebrates 84thbirthday

Dorothy Hayes of the Pine Ridge com-munity celebrated her 84th birthday onJune 5. She is seated with her grand-children, Ashlie and Bryan, front, andson, James and Mary Alice. Dorothyremains in good health and is knownfor her crocheting and beautiful flow-ers. She has been blessed with a won-derful life and continues to remainactive in her yard and gardening work.Dorothy was surprised with a birthdaycake designed by her granddaughterand daughter-in-law.


John Hamilton receives Jack Stickley AwardLion John Hamilton, a member of the

Mount Airy Lion’s Club, recently wasawarded The Jack Stickley FellowshipAward, the N.C. Lions Foundation’s high-est honor. This prestigious honor wasgiven at the Awards and InstallationBanquet District 31-D at GreensboroMarriott Hotel in Greensboro on June 11.Lion John received a personalized plaqueand a Stickley Fellow pin. His name willbe placed on an honor roll in the StickleyBuilding located on the campus of CampDogwood on Lake Norman in CatawbaCounty.

Lion John became a member of theMount Airy Lions Club in July, 1954. Heserved as president in 1962-63. He hasserved as past district governor in District31-D. On July 1, 2009, John received his55 year Monarch Chevron Award fromLions International. He has served in allchairs of his local club as well as variousdistrict and state posts.

John grew up in Thomasville and mar-ried Maxine Moore in 1945. They will cel-ebrate their 65th wedding anniversary inDecember, 2010. They have three chil-dren, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He has been a very activemember of Central United MethodistChurch in Mount Airy. He is past presi-dent of the Mount Airy-Surry CountySalvation Army Advisory Board, pastpresident of the NC Junior High-Middle

School Principal’s Association and hasserved on the Advisory Board for theBoard of Education at Appalachian StateUniversity.

John attended Appalachian College ona basketball scholarship for two years. Heinterrupted his college career to serve inthe US Marines from 1942-45 with part ofhis time in the South Pacific. He continuedhis college career and received his B.A.degree from High Point College where heplayed baseball. He taught at AshemoreBusiness School for three years. Hereturned to Applachian College andreceived his master’s degree in administra-tion.

They moved to Surry County and hewas a teacher and girl’s basketball coach atBeulah High School for several years. Heserved as principal at BannertownElementary School and Mount Airy JuniorHigh School until retiring after 30 yearsservice with the state of NorthCarolina. During the summers he servedas assistant basketball coach under FrankMcGuire at Camp PlaMor in Windy HillBeach, S.C.

Representing the Mount Airy LionsClub at the Awards Banquet were LionPresident Roger Keck and wife Donna andLion Norman Smith and wife, Kathleen.Lion John’s wife, Maxine, and theirdaughter, Lynn Dickens, also were presentfor the occasion.

SCC sponsors 14th annual golf tournamentThe community has raised $550,000 in

support of Surry Community College stu-dents since the annual golf tournament’sinception in 1996.

A crystal clear, May 20th on the CrossCreek Country Club course was the ticketto breaking the half-million dollar mark insupport of Surry Community College stu-dents in need. Bobby Harold and JerryVenable, co-chairmen for the tournament,along with students, faculty, staff and com-munity volunteers, worked tirelessly toensure success.

Budget reductions and investmentdeclines continue to make the event criti-cal in supporting a student population whorealize the value of a college education butdo not have the resources needed withouthelp. Surry Community College is thesource for hope, opportunity and jobs forthis region.

The following winners will have studentscholarships presented in their teamnames for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 schoolyears.
