Mountain Parkkids make cards

for hospicepatients

Mountain Park Elementary school chil-dren recently made Christmas Cards forpatients at Mountain Valley Hospice.

The children learn about a differentcharacter trait each month.

December’s trait was giving so it wasthe perfect time to give the gift ofChristmas joy. James Eaton, a teacher’sassistant, helped by coordinating a timefor each class to construct a card, frompre-kindergarten to fifth grade. The kidsmade more than 200 cards; some kidseven made two.

Mountain Valley Hospice VolunteerCoordinator Sharon Ratcliff and volunteerGail Gabe were present to accept the cardsfrom Joseph Snow and Natalie Payne. Thecards were distributed to the patients bythe staff as they made visits during theweek of Christmas.

As is the custom with many organizations and agencies, the Bannertown VolunteerFire Department held its annual awards dinner recently.

The event, held on Dec. 18, was well-attended and served as a means to recognizemany members of the department. Among the awards given out were the rising star,chief’s award, auxiliary volunteer of the year, most training, first responder and firefighter of the year awards.

Students at ShoalsElementary School also got a close up look at the fire safety equipment worn by firefighters from Pilot Knob, Bannertown and Araratvolunteer fire departments. A favorite part of the day was when each student had an opportunity to spray water from the water hosehigh into the air. Excitement on the faces of the students showed how much they enjoyed interacting with the firefighters.

Principal Diane Beane of East SurryHigh School announced that MarcLewis has been named a CommendedStudent in the 2011 National MeritScholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from theschool and National Merit ScholarshipCorporation (NMSC), which conductsthe program, will be presented by theprincipal to this scholastically talentedsenior.

About 34,000 Commended Studentsthroughout the nation are recognizedfor their exceptional academic promise.Although they will not continue in the2011 competition for National MeritScholarships, Commended Studentsplaced among the top five percent ofmore than 1.5 million students whoentered the 2011 competition by takingthe 2009 Preliminary SAT/NationalMerit Scholarship Qualifying Test(PSAT/NMSQT).

“Recognition of high-achieving stu-dents is essential to advancing educa-tion excellence in our nation,” com-mented a spokesperson for NMSC. “Asdemonstrated by their outstanding per-formance in our highly competitiveprogram, the young men and womennamed Commended Students representsome of the most academically talentedstudents in our country. We sincerelyhope this recognition will enhance theireducational opportunities and encour-age them in their pursuit of academicsuccess.”
