The descendants of James R andSarah Key Ashburn held their annu-

al reunion on Sept. 25 at the CalvaryBaptist Church Fellowship Hall. Hostingwere the Wade and Mildred AshburnMarion children: Dwight and BrendaMarion Buffaloe, Wade and Libby Marion,Mike and Patricia Marion Crews, Kennethand Mitzi Marion, and Mike and CathyMarion.

This year's theme was “Honoring OurTroops” past and present. Relativesentered the parking lot between two whitetrucks, carrying American Flags providedby Kenneth. Patricia and Libby and theirdaughters Lara Crews and April MarionRobinson were in charge of decorations:centerpieces on each table were variousmilitary mugs holding small Americanflags, and posters from all branches of themilitary were around the hall. Wade wasgiven a flag by Rep. Virginia Foxx, whichhad flown over the Capitol, to honor theAshburn soldiers and their family. Mikewas the resident short-order cook, assistedby Mike Crews and Ashley Marion.Dwight and Brenda were in charge of“spreading the word” and ordering the hotdogs,hamburgers and buns.

Patricia has researched the militarypast, and discovered that Ashburns wereactive in all the wars, beginning withMartin Ashburn in the Revolutionary War,through the War of 1812, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korean War,Vietnam, and present-day soldiers Adamand Cory Parker, grandsons of OpalAshburn Parker. A special guest was fami-ly friend, Jack Leach, who is a PearlHarbor survivor and Korean War Veteran.

Approximately 90 family members andguests attended.

Ruby Lambert entertained at 90th birthday luncheonRuby Lambert was honored at a 90th

birthday luncheon Sunday following themorning worship service at Central UnitedMethodist Church. The Rev. John Ferree,pastor, recognized Ruby’s birthday.

Hosting the celebration were herdaughter and son-in-law, Arlette and DougPorter and son and daughter-in-law, Jimand Mary Lambert. Also assisting wereRuby’s sister, Marilyn Ledford, and niece,Donna Smith.

Randle Brim, family friend, writer andphotographer from Asheboro, taped, notonly the party, but the worship service andPat Woltz’s Sunday School Class, both ofwhich Ruby attended.

A very special family member present wasRuby’s brother, Dr. Gilmer Blackburn, whowas born on her 19th birthday. He was accom-panied by his wife, Martha. He is Provost atthe University of Virginia at Wise. Ruby is theeldest child of Rufus and Hettie Blackburnand the widow of Fred L. Lambert.

Mary Planer catered the luncheon withabout 200 guests enjoying the celebration.The tiered birthday cake, created by MaryLambert, featured a circle tiered base thatFred Lambert made for his father-in-law’s80th birthday.

The fellowship hall was beautifullydecorated with some of Ruby’s memora-bilia. “I wonder how they got all of this outof my house because I haven’t missed athing,” she told the group. One corner wasdevoted to memories of her days at QualityMills and Cross Creek Apparel where sheworked for many years. Other photos heldfamily photos and her pictures from birth.

Those attending from out of town were:Carolyn Blackburn of Raleigh; Frankye andBill Crump of Summerfield; GregBlackburn and wife Chenney ofBlowing Rock, James Blackburn and moth-er, Sara Blackburn and Sarah Simpson ofArbor Acres, Winston-Salem; Pat Kittrell ofLynchburg, Va.; Jamie Bollman’s family ofWinston-Salem; Paul and Brenda Dunlevyof Kernersville; Chuck and Carolyn Porterof Charlotte and Joe Banner of Raleigh.

Greetings were received from many oth-ers who could not attend, including Ruby’sgrandson, Dee Porter and his wife Meghannof Oxford, Miss., where he is working onhis PHD at the University of Mississippi,and two granddaughters, Dr. CorneliaLambert of Oklahoma City, Ok., where sheteaches at the University of Oklahoma andAmanda Miller of Atlanta, Ga., both daugh-ters of the late Fred Lambert, Jr.

Ruby confessed that she was amazedwith so many friends and relatives turningout for the party. Then she asked, “Howcan I somehow express my appreciation tomy wonderful friends at Central whohelped make this day so special?”

The 1965 graduating class of J.J.JonesSchool gathered Oct. 9 for a reunion atVeterans Park and to participate in theAutumn Leaves Festival.

The meeting brought together manyideas, polciies and procedures that will beemployed by the class to further the effortsof the J.J.Jones Alumni Association intheir pursuit of their mission statement.

The event opened with master of cere-mony Jackie Snow calling names of eachmember unable to attend the event becauseof family health issues: Nancy GrahamIrby, Ike France and Cleveland Jessup.Those present sent messages to the class-mates.

The return to the city by those current-ly residing in El Paso, Texas; Flint, Mi.;Copiage, N.Y.; Atlanta, Ga.; Barrington,Il.; Annapolis, Md.; and Harrisburg, Pa.indicates the appreciation for the work anddedication of the faculty and staff and thefamily atmosphere promoted by parentsand alumni of J.J. Jones School.

A 45-year time span lends itself tomany changes in the status of those in thegraduating class of 1965. Most of theyoung men are military veterans with serv-

ice in foreign theaters of combat opera-tions. Class members have establishedtheir academic and athletic achievementsand distinguished professional careers.

The reunion brought together theclass in a forum hosted at the J.J.JonesSchool library. This time was designatedto reacquaint each of the members andintroduce their families and friends. Theatmosphere was eclectic and broughtmuch joy and many smiles to the faces ofthose who had not seen or spoken to someof their classmates since graduation.Many tears of joy were shed by those justbeing back at the school and reminiscingabout the times when they were walkingthe halls of J.J.Jones.

A banner for the class of 1965 wasmade and each member that has passedaway was given a place at the top of thebanner with their names and year of deathinscribed. Each member of the class inattendance was required to sign the bannerwith the current year.

A class meeting was held to electnew officers of the class, and suprisingly,those who served office their senior yearare the ones elected to serve the same

office. They are: Jackie Snow, president;Nancy Bowman Williams, vice president;Jewell Adams Hauser, treasurer; and RosaTucker Opolus, secretary.

The program consisted of a welcomestatement by Rosa Tucker Opolus, invo-cation by Ira Clark, gues recognition byNancy Bowman Williams, tribute tothose class members that have passed byMary Hatcher, the signing of the schoolalma mater, Special Recognition ofthose members that made significantcontributions to the success of the pro-gram were :Jewell Adams Hauser, MaryNell Hatcher, Rosa Tucker Opolus,Nancy Bowman Williams, Elaine JoyceNorris, Patsy Jessup Helton and SamGunter.

A special moment was held for theclass to sing the school fight song lead byEttaven Love Carroll. Class members andvisitors alike clapped, yelled and stood upand cheered remembering the days whenthe basketball team was at its best.

Each class member was given several

minutes to speak about their specialmoments at the school. The discussionwas joyful, tearful and enlightening.Many in attendance said they were amazedby the recollections of the speaker.

Special notice was given to the class-mates that have passed - Clint Mittman(1965), Jean Carol Shuff (1966), CharlesBrim (1966), Sara Hunt House (1993),Kelly Smith (1995), Danny Jessup (1997),Annie Belle Valentine (1997), Rosa Gwyn(2001), Pete France (2001), Wayne Penn(2001), Lonnie Travis (2003), TommyDuncan (2003), Elizabeth Evans Greene(2004), Albert Mankins (2004), TheodoreAllen (2005), Sarah King Mankins (2008),Bobby Hill (2008), Sarah Stewart Lyons(2008) and Helen Rawley Davis (200).

Special thanks were extended toEdward McDaniel and Ron Snow for pro-viding memorobilia and other artifactsfor the video showing pictures from highschool days.

The event was culminated with dinnerand dancing.
