birthday celebration were the governor andfirst lady of West Virginia, Joe and GayleManchin, and friends from Winston-Salem.
At the close of the luncheon, Gov.Manchin presented Pete with the Order ofthe 35th Star in recognition of his out-standing career in teaching and the arts.West Virginia was the 35th state admittedto the Union. This is the highest honor thegovernor of West Virginia can bestow onone of its citizens.

Blue Ridge CareNet holds fundraising eventThe Blue Ridge CareNet Counseling
Center held a dinner and silent auc-tion on April 30 that raised about $5,000through community support.
The dinner was catered by Gondola’sMediterranean Restaurant.
The counseling center is a non-profitagency which provides a full range ofcounseling services to the public.
Proceeds from the event will be used toprovide subsidies for clients who needfree or reduced charges in order to accesscounseling services.
Speaker for the evening was the Rev.Paul Mullen from Wake Forest UniversityBaptist Medical Center. His topic, “WhatKeeps You Awake at Night,” offered prac-tical tips on stress management.
CareNet has a rich heritage of bringinghope and healing to men, women and chil-dren of any faith or no faith.

Wayne Barlow rewarded with pie on his face
The staff from RBC Bank in Pilot Mountain completed its fundraiser for theMarch of Dimes with Wayne Barlow raising the most money, $109. Instead of anice gift, he received a pie in the face as co-workers got a big laugh. Customerswere invited to come back to the bank after hours to partake in the event. ValerieParker, left, said thanks to the fundraiser and the beanie baby fundraiser, thebranch raised $520.37 for the March of Dimes. They walked with the RBC Bank,Mount Airy team, on April 24 with a great turnout and loads of fun walking forbabies. Valerie makes a direct hit!
What a mess. But it was worth the effort. Walkers from RBC Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain participated in the March of Dimes fundraiser.

Locks of LoveInez Hicks promised her sister, Mattie P. Lawson, she would let her grow longenough to get a wig for her. Mattie was suffering from cancer and didn’t live toknow that Inez finally had 11 inches of hair which she is still going to send toLocks of Love in memory of her sister.
Mattie Lawson suffered from cancer and passed away. Her sister, Inez Hicks,says her hair will now go to Locks of Love in memory of her sister.
