REFLECTIONS FOR EUCHARISTIC ADORATION RESPONDING TO GOD’S LOVE Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones be-come loaves of bread.” He said in reply, “It is written: ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:1-4. The temptation in the desert occurs immediately after the Baptism of Jesus where we hear the beautiful words of God "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." PRACTICE: Consider, given the above, that temptation and difficulties will occur, despite God's love for us, until we are with Him in Heaven. Sit with this thought for a while. Do you believe it? Or do you think that your faith should ensure that you will have no difficulties or temptations? Consider also Jesus' response to the devil's temptations. He responds with scripture. He responds with God's word, with God's teachings. Jesus models for us the way to respond to our own difficulties and temptations. Consider Jesus' posture. He is steadfast in His faith. His response is immediate and deliberate. Finally, consider the actual response Jesus gives to the devil: above any earthly want or need are the commandments of God. Spend time learning scripture and the Catechism. Pray that when necessary you can respond to difficul-ties and temptations in the way God wants, with unwavering faith. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Every Friday 9:00am to 9:00pm in the Chapel of Adoration If you would like to join The Adoration Program at St. Frances Cabrini call or email Alice Burns 919-306-6293 [email protected]

McGrath, Enrique Pardo-Miranda, Jacob Torrey Robert Exontus,

On Sunday, February 14th, students in classes for the Rite of

Initiation for Children(RCIC and Rites of Initiation for Adults

(RCIA) had the opportunity to celebrate two important Rites.

These two Rites are called the Rite of Sending and the Rite of

Election and mark a student’s journey toward preparing the final

steps to enter the Catholic Church this Easter, either through

Baptism or into full communion.

Botheof these Rites mark another transition-one duly noted by a

change of “title”- from catechumen to elect.

The rite of Sending, was celebrated here at

St Frances Cabrini Church, during the 10:30AM Mass.

The Rite of Election was celebrated by:

Bible Insights Psalm 27

The writer of this Psalm expresses the utmost confidence and trust in the all powerful and watchful eye of God. He recognizes that no matter what has happened in the past God has brought him safely through it, and trusting in that knowledge he believes that God will always be on his side. We all know that David went though all kinds of cruelty, war, deceit, betrayal and attempts on his life, yet God gave him the courage to face everything and go on relying on the promise God made him to protect him to the end of his days.

David prays fervently, "One thing I ask of the Lord, this I will still seek To dwell in the Lord's house all the days of my life."

This is our prayer also, as we move into the second week of Lent. The Gospel reminds us of what a glorious sight this will be in the story of the Transfiguration. The Apostles Peter, James and John were overwhelmed by the sight and wanted to build altars and remain there. Jesus saw it differently; he told them not to tell anyone about the experience.

Jesus knew that the experience of glory (beatific vision) comes only after we have won the battle over sin and evil in this world and that the surest way to gain it is by being committed to loving and serving God faithfully, by accepting the daily problems we have continuing always to trust in God to bring us through them. In that way, not only will it be beneficial to our own souls, we will be like light to those around us to see God's Presence in the world.

February 21, 2016 Second Sunday of Lent

My Dear Friends,

PICTURE THIS: In 1982 the property on which this church now stands was a 15 acre

orange grove purchased by the Diocese of St. Petersburg for $136,000. At that time the town of

Parrish was a large farming community, and many migrant workers lived in the area. In 1984 this

orange grove property was transferred for $1 (one dollar) to the newly created Diocese of Venice.

The needs of the congregation were the responsibility of Holy Cross Church in Palmetto under

Fr. Patrick Farrell until he retired in 1985.

Around this same time, October 1985, I as a young priest arrived in New York with a one-way ticket from Poland. That

was how it was coming from a Communist country. Initially sent to Toledo, OH, and then Fall River, MA, to minister to the

needs of Polish immigrants in the U.S., I spoke no English and studied with kindergartners at St. Stanislaus Parish School.

Imagine that in a year and a half I graduated from eighth grade while in Fall River! I spent a short time in Detroit and then Port

Charlotte in 1995 after finishing my graduate work where I received my STL (Sacred Theology License) at Catholic University

in Washington, D.C. Expecting to continue my education for my STD (Sacred Theology Doctorate), what a surprise Bishop

John J. Nevins of the Diocese of Venice thought differently and sent me to Parrish for what was to be a six-week assignment that

turned into twenty one years!

Arriving to the sight of a double-wide trailer church surrounded by orange groves, I wasn’t quite sure I was in the right place

as this was in the middle of nowhere. This church trailer had 180 seats with 125 families registered and 15 children enrolled in

faith formation. I am forever grateful to these families who opened their hearts and homes to me, and it didn’t take long to

know I was exactly where I needed to be. God knew what He was doing.

In just a few short years it was very clear to the growing congregation that a permanent structure was needed. There were

six weekend Masses, way too much for one priest to handle. With a great deal of prayer, enthusiasm, hard work and great gener-

osity of dedicated parishioners both living and dead, plans became reality. Joe O’Henley, Dutch Cook and Charlie Haight, all

now deceased, were the driving force behind this massive building effort, and we are indebted, as well, to Audrey Keisacker, now

deceased, for her artistic talents in sculpting our statues. Cabrini Cottage Thrift Store was born as a way to help pay for the sanc-

tuary, and you, the parishioners, opened your hearts and generously supported the dream. On November 13, 1999, Feast Day of

Mother Cabrini, the $1.6 million sanctuary rising in the grove’s place was dedicated. Ministries sprang to life including two of

which we are most proud -- that of the Homebound and Nursing Home Ministry and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Key

organizations were formed including a Knights of Columbus chapter and the Squires, CCW and Guardian Angels. Learning

Lambs and Baby Steps Ministry was born while the Arimatheans supported our parish bereavement needs. Bible study classes,

Charismatic Prayer Group, and the SCRIP program grew as well as did the faith formation. It didn’t take long, however, to out-

grow the classroom space in the church with its seven classrooms.

Once again you, the parishioners, went into action to spearhead a campaign for a parish center. With deepest appreciation to

deceased parishioners and dedicated men and women still here, groundbreaking took place in 2008 for a 25,350 square foot facili-

ty that would meet the growing need for more space for adult faith and youth formation programs, charitable endeavors, and

fellowship activities. And so a second dream became reality through your faithfulness and great generosity as the Cabrini Center

with classrooms, a large hall, kitchen, storage space, staff offices, conference rooms, and a large area for the Cabrini Thrift Store

was dedicated on November 22, 2009.

As I look back on these past 21 years here at St. Frances Cabrini, it is very clear to me that it is you the parishioners, both

living and dead, who have made this parish the wonderful community of faithful it is. I am humbled to have been your shepherd

as we journeyed together in prayer and sacrifice from one dream to the next, praising God and sharing our gratefulness, meeting

challenges, enjoying peaceful and blessed times, as well as fun times. I feel so very privileged to have been a part of your lives,

and I thank you. This church is your church. Priests come and go, but it is you who are the thread which holds it together. As

Father Farrell said to the congregation when he retired: the old Ford was being replaced by a new Cadillac, so I say to you: this

old Cadillac is now making room for a new Ferrari. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to keep you in mine. I am

assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes in Venice. I am not saying goodbye but so long, see you around. Remember God loves each of

you and so does Father Jay.
