My Dear Parishioners,

This Third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called “Gaudete”, a Latin word meaning “Rejoice.” It is a rejoicing reflected in rose vestments, and even the choice of scripture readings. Why the rose? It’s almost as if approaching sunlight is pressing through the purple, like when the sun at dawn begins to shine

through our sanctuary stained glass. Daylight is not here yet, but you rejoice because you see it coming. Yes, today we can feel the closeness of Christ’s coming in history, and look forward to His return in glory. For Christians, rejoicing lies at the heart of our faith. Even if we are struggling with life’s great issues, we are still called to be people of joy, and be ready to share that joy with others. For God visited earth that Christmas, and revealed how precious each of us is in His eyes. So no matter what happens, that realization can bring us joy. Clearly the joy of a Christian is not the same as the pleasure of human satisfaction. These are emotions that are too often short-lived. Spiritual joy rises from our interior life, our relationship with God. Of course this comes, as St. Paul says today, by remaining prayerful, with one eye here on earth, and another eye on heaven. But to maintain that joy takes more than prayer. In today’s Gospel, the followers of John the Baptist ask, “So what should we do?” It’s a practical question, and John has practical answers, “Do not retreat from life, but be converted to a just way of living.” “Be sensitive to the needs of justice.” In other words, be sharers, rather than just takers. Tax collectors and public officials are not to resign, but to be fair and honest. Soldiers are not to retreat from their posts, but use their power appropriately. This is a Gospel of people power, where the message can change the very face of the wor ld, and bring it what it desires the most – real, lasting joy. So what must we do? As spouses and family members, we can strive to love with a God-like love that sacrifices and forgives. As parents and guardians, we can teach our children by example that their true value lies not in the material things or latest gadgets they own, but in how they treat others. As employers and employees, by paying a just wage and working hard for our employer. It is said that as each person approached John the Baptist in the Jordan River to be baptized, they first announced to John their sins. Our path to true joy best begins when we go to confession. So make an appointment during this coming week (so close to Christ’s birth) to come and meet Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There you can best renew the joy that only He can give, when He says, “Rise and go home. Y our sins are forgiven!”

May God Bless You,

A Message From Your Pastor

Scripture Readings for Next Sunday Fourth Week of Advent December 23, 2018 Micah 5: 1-4A Psalm 80: 2-3, 15-16, 18-19 Hebrews 10: 5-10 Luke 1: 39-43 Our salvation comes from unlikely places. In the first read-ing, Bethlehem is too small; in the Gospel, a young virgin and her barren cousin meet in small-town Israel. What good can come from any of this? And yet, it is through these seemingly insignificant people and places that God has chosen to act deci-sively in human history. As we listen to God’s word, are we open to God’s actions in unlikely places in our own lives?

Scenes from the Advent Mass And Gift Giving

Our 13th annual event was a success, as St. Bede parishion-ers once again showed their generosity and Christmas spirit (photos by Gary Gehringer & Alfred Zarroli)

Fr. Gus Puleo, pastor of St. Patrick Parish iin Norristown, delivered the homily during the Gi Giving Mass.

The choir of St. Patrick Church in Norristown was once again on hand to lend their voices to the Mass.

Fr. Gus and his parishioners gratefully accepted gis for the needy from parishioners of all ages.

Some children had a bird’s eye view of the Mass, from the choir lo.

The generosity of our parishioners showed through, as the altar was covered with presents!

Artist’s conceptualization of Proposed Colored Tile Mosaic for St. Bede Bell Tower

The scene is the Upper Room or Cenacle, where the Apos-tles gathered with the Blessed Mother after Jesus’ death and Resurrection. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended on them. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, they left the safety of the Upper Room and began Christ’s Church. This scene is a reminder that as a parish we are now called to leave our church after each Mass, and carry the Gospel to our community.

Donations totaling $500 or more will be acknowledged on a plaque near the vestibule after the project is completed.

At this point we have raised $14,000, which is approximately 32 percent of the cost, which is $45,000.

Many of these donations have been received in memory of a recently deceased family or parish member. Please contact Monsignor Marine for further

information or questions: 215-357-5720

Principal’s Corner

This past week, our school community celebrated this holy season through the annual celebration of Carol Night. This was a beautiful combination of traditional Christmas songs and narration of the story of the birth of Jesus. Students from all grade levels participated in this special presentation. Our children truly helped us remember the true meaning of Christmas. There has been so much excitement this week as our stu-dents and teachers anticipate the upcoming Christmas break. With Christmas being just around the corner, we pray and prepare our hearts for the birth of the Child Jesus. On behalf our school community, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2019! May we all keep to the true meaning of Christmas!

Perpetual Adoration Prayer is the Heart of Every Parish

“What we need is for every Parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in holy hours of prayer.”

St. Teresa of Calcutta “Jesus calls us to know and love Him so that we might better follow Him. What better way is there to grow close to Him than in the stillness of prayer before Him in the Blessed Eucharist, Before Him in the tabernacle or exposed in the Monstrance, we spend time in His Presence, listening to Him, speaking to Him, asking to grow closer to Him. It is a privilege for us to be able to spend time before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. During those precious moments we sense Jesus’ tremendous love for us. We bring to Him our joys and our sorrows, we talk to Him about the needs of those around us, and we ask for that deep conversion of heart and mind that will make us one with Him. Amid the rush and noise of the world we draw apart for a time to be quiet in mind and spirit to contemplate the great love of God for us.” - a quote from Rev. B. J. Hickey Please stop by and visit Jesus in our chapel adjacent to the parish offices in the St. Katharine Drexel Center. The chapel is open 7 days a week / 24 hours a day! Cornerstone for Life Medical Miracle:

Woman Considered Brain Dead Recovers After Her Life Support is Removed

Anchor Lester Holt recalled description of the surprise recovery as a “miracle” as he set up the report: “We’re back now with what a family is calling a medical miracle — a woman considered almost brain dead who recovers after the gut-wrenching decision to remove her life support.” In a pre-recorded piece, correspondent Kristen Dahlgren then recounted for viewers that Michele De Leeuw was hospitalized after having a heart attack and, at one point, was diagnosed as nearly brain dead with only five percent brain function. On Friday, the NBC Nightly News took the time to devote an entire story to the case of a Michigan woman who survived a near-death experience which illustrates that doctors can sometimes make the wrong diagnosis and give up on comatose patients too soon. Her husband, Karl, was seen explaining how difficult it was for him to decide to have her life support removed by doctors who advised that she would never recover, but then she woke up and began talking a few days after life support was discon-nected, and has improved substantially since then.

Dear Parishioners, Shepherds are needed for the Christmas Eve Tableau. All other roles are assigned. Any families planning to attend the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass in the gym are invited to have their children participate in the Nativity Tableau as shepherds (girls or boys) while the gospel is proclaimed by Msgr. Marine. The mandatory practice session (including the distribution of costumes) will take place December 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the gym. If interested - call (215) 357-2130 or email [email protected]
