“But the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.” The foolish versus the wise. Today’s parable sets these two groups in stark contrast to one another. Two crowds of young women wait for a wedding feast. One group comes prepared for the unexpected, the other just assumes everything will go according to schedule. But it doesn’t! The Bridegroom is late, and the foolish virgins are left out in the dark--literally--while the wise ones enjoy the feast inside.

The lesson here is not just about having foresight and gathering the corresponding equipment. It’s about being ready for the second coming of Christ. Jesus himself is the “Bridegroom.” Traditionally we refer to the Church as the “Bride of Christ” and we, as the people of God who constitute the Church, are even now awaiting the real feast, the culmination of time when Jesus returns. But are we standing among the wise or the foolish as we wait?

Jesus tells us today, “Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Are we spiritually awake? Do we have extra oil to see us through, or are we hitting the bottom of the barrel and running on spiritual fumes so to speak? Do we think it’s enough to do the bare minimum as we wait for Christ--stepping into church without really being present, or calling ourselves Christian without really taking up the challenge of the cross? In order to avoid standing outside the feast with the foolish, we will want to make sure we fill our flasks with oil or, in other words, fill our hearts with the love of God, fill our minds with his word and his teachings, and fill our souls with the virtues that unite us to his will. If we stock up on these important supplies, we can count ourselves among the wise!

Kudos to our Caring Needles Ladies!

My name is Katherine Puckett-Record and I’m the Director of Camp Bluebird. We are totally funded by St. Vincent’s Health System and private donations. We take cancer survivors for a 2 night, 3 day camp, to rest and relax for a few days. This past October, your crochet group, Caring Needles, made over 80 blankets with a few members witnessing how excited our survivors were to receive them. I want your church to know what a blessing it was. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. A special thanks to Rita Lozano, for always making sure our patients have plenty of caps and scarves, while going through their treatments. Thank you to Pam Ozeki for becoming one of the counselors at Camp Bluebird!

Stewardship Reflection 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

www.catholicsteward.com

“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Christ cautions us often concerning our sense of conversion and timing. It has a lot to do with procrastination — that is, putting something off or delaying something which needs to be accomplished.

Most of us understand the importance of living up to Christ’s expectations and living life in a way to which He has called us. In other words, we comprehend that we need to be His disciples, but we seem to find excuses and reasons not to totally commit to that. That is exactly the issue Jesus is addressing in today’s Gospel from St. Matthew, which is essentially the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Are we truly prepared for the return of Christ, the Second Coming? In a sense it has everything to do with death. We may not wish to think about it but we do know that death is inevitable, and have we done everything we need to do to be prepared?

It was St. Augustine of Hippo who said, “God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.” Like the Virgins in the parable, we cannot wait. Now, this very moment, is the time for us to do what God has called us to do, and that is live lives of stewardship in service and love to others. There are indeed no promises about tomorrow, but Christ has offered us hope for eternal life. Have we done everything we need to do to be ready?

Volunteers Needed for Meals-on-Wheels

There is an urgent need in our surrounding community - many of our elderly or disabled neighbors need our help. Meals-on-Wheels, a United Way program, prepares meals that are ready to serve - we just need drivers to deliver these weekday, lunchtime meals! A route generally takes 1-2 hours - you can volunteer once a month or more often if you choose. By volunteering, you will also be enabling Meals-on-Wheels to defray the cost of delivery and allow them to deliver to more people on their waiting list! (There are over 300 on the waiting list in our surrounding suburbs!) For more information, please contact Maleia Tortorigi, volunteer coordinator at United Way, 205.458.2056, [email protected], or contact parishioners, Royce and Linda Scott, 205.777.3346.

Church Linen Coordinator NeededThe Linen Ministry is in need of a coordinator. This commitment would require someone who could schedule, monitor, and coordinate volunteers to wash, dry and iron the linens (corporals, patens and towels) used at Mass. This ministry has volunteer members in place and needs a coordinator. If you are interested, please contact Cheri Poole, Liturgy Director, [email protected], 205.822.9125 x 27. Your prayerful consideration is so appreciated! Thank you!

Please Pray for our Prince of Peace Teens

On Thursday, November 16, 33 Prince of Peace High School Youth Group members and chaperones along with other teens from our Diocese will leave for the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. Please keep these teens in your prayers for safe travels and a great spiritual weekend with thousands of fellow Catholic teens.

Religious EducationThe Voice of the Authentic Self

It would seem, then, that the great challenge is to work out what we believe. This is surprisingly easy. When it comes to everyday dilemmas, we all have a guide that is never wrong and often ignored. The voice of the authentic self calls to us ceaselessly from within. Traditionally it has been called the voice of conscience, but regardless of what name we give it, we all have this quiet, gentle voice within us, and it is our truest guide. We are constantly overwhelmed by voices – the voices of parents, of friends, teachers, mentors, coaches, siblings, employers, experts, celebrities, politicians, preachers, advisors, consultants. All these voices make it very easy to drown out the quiet voice within. But this voice within is the voice of your authentic self. This is the-best-version-of-yourself talking to you. This is the voice of integrity, the voice of character, the voice of virtue. This is quite possibly the only voice in your life that has no agenda other than seeing you become perfectly yourself. Identifying a set of core beliefs and developing a personal mission statement are powerful and useful exercises, but it is the voice within more than anything or anyone else that will help you to discover what you believe. Not all at once, though we wish it could be so, but step by step along the way. If you learn to listen to the gentle voice within you, it will grow stronger and stronger, and if you live by what you hear, that voice will grow clearer and clearer with every passing day. Perfectly Yourself, Matthew Kelly

Parish leaders Jim and Amy Schulist from Prince of Peace Catholic Community Church in Houston, Texas recently visited our Prince of Peace to thank us for the generous $40,000 donation toward hurricane Harvey relief. They presented Parish Operations Manager, Kelly Doss (second from left) and Pastoral Care Director, Bette Graffeo (far left) with an artist-signed framed print of Jesus entitled “Prince of Peace” on behalf of their church.

In addition to the Houston hurricane donation, Prince of Peace parishioners donated $10,000 to St. Peter Catholic Church in Big Pine Key, Florida for hurricane Harvey relief and $10,000 to St. Blaise Catholic Church in Coamo, Puerto Rico for hurricane Maria relief. Soon, $3,500 in parishioner donations will be delivered to the diocese in Mexico located in the area stricken by the recent earthquake to aid relief efforts there.

With Thanksgiving and the Season of Advent coming up, enrolling in Faith Direct is a great way to ensure your gifts to Prince of Peace are received even while you are traveling for the holidays. Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-4)

Yet Another Mass ShootingOnce again we mourn a massacre as a shooter in Las Vegas fired on a concert crowd, killing 59 (including himself ) and injuring hundreds.

We ask the urgent question: why? Not just about this case, but about the many mass shootings of recent years. Unlike the socially approved forms of killing we focus on opposing, these mass shootings are strongly condemned by just about everybody.

Among the many ideas for why is the “legitimization of violence model.” The basic idea is that when the government uses violence to solve problems, people pick up on it and apply it. Studies have suggested this pattern occurs with war and with executions. It provides people a model to follow.

Therefore, having socially approved killing can be an inspiration for killing that isn’t socially approved at all.
