What About... Islam… Again!
As we continue our discussion of Islam, this month
we will talk about some of the specific beliefs of their
religion.
What do they believe about God?
One of the fundamental beliefs of Islam is that God
is one. They do not believe God is “three in one”
(Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Muslims have a very
high respect and understanding of God. Dishonoring
God or His Name is one of the most serious of sins
in Islam. Muslims often refer to God as Allah. This is
not a special name or designation for God. Allah is
simply the Arabic word for God. As a result, Muslims are not the only ones who use the name of Allah for
God. In fact, Arabic translations of the Holy Bible use
the word Allah when referring to God.
What do they believe about Jesus?
Muslims believe Jesus is one of God’s messengers,
like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Muhammad.
The Qur’an (Islam’s holy book) says Jesus was born
of the Virgin Mary. Muslims believe Jesus is sinless
and performed many great miracles, like raising the
dead, healing lepers, and giving the blind sight.
However, don’t be fooled! Islam teaches some very
different things about Jesus. Muslims contend that Jesus
is not God. Therefore, Jesus did not win forgiveness
for our sins or become the way of salvation. Instead,
Jesus is only a human being who faithfully followed
Allah. Muslims also believe that Jesus did not even die
on a cross. The Qur’an explains how God saved Jesus
from the cross and took him into heaven before he
died. Under Islam, Jesus is not a Redeemer.
He is merely a guide.
How is a person saved under Islam?
Like Christians, Muslims believe all of humanity will
end up at one of two destinations: heaven or hell.
However, we believe very different things on how
we get there!
The Qur’an clearly teaches that salvation is dependent
on both faith and good works. All Muslims are called to
bear their own burden as they wait for the Judgment
Day. Their faith and good works must outweigh their
sins in life. In other words, salvation is like a balancing
scale to them. On the one side is all the bad things they
have done in life. On the other side is all the faith and
good works they have performed. So long as the faith
and good works outweigh the bad things, they will get
to go to heaven.
As Christians, we are also waiting for the Judgment
Day. However, through faith in Jesus Christ and the
forgiveness He has to offer, God will declare us “not
guilty” of all our sins in life! Being saved does not
depend on what we do. What a comforting gift!
How should I respond?
Again, be patient and loving as you speak with Muslims.
Remember: Jesus died for their sins. They just don’t
know the Gospel, yet.
Also, find “common ground” to speak about. We,
too, have a very high respect for God and His Word.
We also realize Jesus was sinless, and heaven and hell are real places. Use some of these “common ground”
points to share the Gospel and the comfort we have
in Christ. When witnessing to Muslims, keep a spare
Bible on hand. They will oftentimes welcome the
opportunity to study more about Jesus. Since their
knowledge of Jesus is filtered through the Qur’an, allow
them to read for themselves about Jesus Christ. Many
Muslims have never opened a Bible before. Simply
“handing someone a Bible” is oftentimes an ineffective
form of evangelism, but a Muslim will likely be excited
about studying the “Injil of Isa” (Gospel of Jesus). Be
willing to help answer questions from Scripture or to
help get the answers they want from your pastor.
God’s Word is powerful and can open opportunities
for the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts!
If you have requests about other world religions that
you would like to learn about in future installments of
“What About...” just let me know!

Weekly Bible Reading - November
In November, we are in the final part of our reading through Mark’s Gospel. November is the end of the “church year” rotation of readings. This means our readings from God’s Word will have a special focus on Jesus’ return and “end times.” We will also finish reading our way through the highlights of Hebrews as this book keeps drawing the connections between the Old Testament and Jesus.
As Lutheran Christians, worship is one of the “high points” of the week. To help you prepare for worship, below are the readings for each of the upcoming Sundays. The Gospel reading is oftentimes the main focus. The Old Testament reading is picked out to fit with the Gospel. The Epistle reading may loosely fit with the Gospel, but often-times is an opportunity to read our way through some of the highlights of a particular New Testament letter. As you look over the readings, watch for patterns and how the readings may fit together!

Then fill it out based on what your heart is telling you.
Take special note of the Youth Serving Interest Survey for ages 12-18
that are also available in the narthex.
As always be sure to place your name on the Serving Interest Survey (so we know

You are welcome to bring your completed pledge forms to worship that day
or put them in the offering plate any Sunday in November.

God's varied grace." (1 Peter 4:10)
Confirmation Update November 2021
We recently finished studying a new Lutheran Distinction Benchmark. We have three different Lutheran Distinction Benchmarks and we cover a different one about every other year. Over the last few years, we have focused on our faith as compared to other religions (Islam, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, etc.) and other denominations (Baptist, Roman Catholic, etc.).
This year, our Lutheran Distinction benchmark focused on our history as Lutheran Christians. Our focus was especially on Martin Luther and the Reformation in the early 1500’s. To help guide the discussion, we watched the Luther movie which came out in 2003. While this movie is very dense and packs a lot of history into two hours, it does a nice job of helping us picture what the Reformation was like through Martin Luther’s eyes.
If you ever have any questions about or ideas for our confirmation process we are developing at New Life, I would love to hear them! I will keep you posted with many of the new and exciting changes as they happen Blessings,

This
Month’s
Theme:
Christ is the King.
Scripture: John 18:37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born
and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of
truth listens to me.”
The crown is a symbol of power and authority.
Who do you know that wears a crown?
A king or queen wears a crown, right? Being a
king is different from being the president of a
country. A president is elected by the people,
but a king isn’t elected, he is born to be king.
Have you seen the movie "The Lion King?" As a lion,
Simba was born to be the "King of the Beasts." Simba
sings, "I Just Can't Wait to Be King." Simba was
anxious to become king because he didn't want anyone
telling him what to do. He also wanted to tell everyone
else what to do.
Simba had a poor idea of what it means to be a king.
The real role of a king is to look after the needs of his people. A good king
is more concerned with caring for his people than he is in being served.
During His last days on earth, Jesus was arrested
and put on trial. When asked if He was a king,
Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a
king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for
this I came into the world."
Yes, Jesus was a king, but unlike Simba, He was
only interested in doing the will of His Father, God. He was born to be
king, but His kingdom is not on this earth -- it’s in heaven. He only came
to earth to make a way for us to live with Him in heaven.
Jesus "just can't wait to be your king." He has invited you to enjoy eternal
life in His heavenly kingdom. Will you crown Him as your King today?
Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Your Son to be our Lord and
King. Help us today, and every day, to honor Him, obey Him, and follow
His will for our life. In Jesus' name, amen.

Scripture: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give

My Thanksgiving Top Ten List
10. My house – there are many people in this world today who have no place to live.
Many of them sleep on park benches and under bridges.
9. Food - we always have plenty to eat at our house. Many people don’t. Every day as I drive
home from work, I see people standing beside the road holding a sign that says, “Will work
for food.”
8. Clothes – I never have to worry about whether there will be clothes in my closet for me to
put on each day. Many people only have the clothes that they are wearing.
7. Health – I am thankful that I am blessed with good health. Many people have a serious
illness which keeps them from enjoying a full and happy life.
6. My country – I am thankful that I live in a country where I enjoy great freedom. In many
countries you don’t have much freedom. In some countries you can be put in prison, or
even put to death, for telling others about Jesus.
5. Teachers – I am thankful for the teachers that I have had in school and in church who
have taught me the things I needed to know to live a happy and successful life.
4. Friends – I am thankful for my many friends. In times of trouble, I have always had friends
who were there to help me.
3. Family – I am thankful for my family. God has given me wonderful family members whom
I love very much.
2. Parents – I am thankful that God blessed me with wonderful parents who loved me, cared
for me, and taught me about Jesus and his love.
1.Jesus – Jesus is number one on the list of things for which I am thankful. No one ever
loved me like Jesus. He loved me so much that he was willing to die on a cross so that I
can have everlasting life. Thank you, Jesus.
The Bible says that God blesses us and gives us much so that we may show our
thanks by sharing it with others. I hope that this Thanksgiving, we will share what God
has given us with those who do not have as much as we do.
“This Thanksgiving, let’s remember exactly
what God has bought for us with the blood
of His Son—not just anything, but
everything that matters: Pardon from sin
and release from guilt. Peace with God
and a home in heaven. We come empty-
handed to this banquet of blessings.
No marshmallow-topped side dish of good
works can earn us a place at this buffet.
We have nothing to offer God in exchange,
yet ‘[t]he LORD has done great things for
us, and we are filled with joy”
(Psalm 126:3).’”
