We have entered the season of Lent, a time in the ancient

Christian calendar to prepare ourselves spiritually for the

celebration of our Resurrection faith, mirroring Jesus’ forty-

day wilderness experience where he faced the three-sided

temptation of Satan. It’s a time for us to reflect earnestly upon

our lives, to repent of our sins, and to seek the grace of God

so that we may recommit ourselves to “deny ourselves, take

up our cross, and follow Jesus” (Luke 9:23). In order to

shape our journey, we’ve selected the Lenten theme: “The

Parables of Lent: Telling the Stories of Jesus.” We don’t use

the word parable often in our conversation, but it’s a synonym

for a proverb, a riddle, or an illustrative story. A parable

requires us to dig below the surface meaning of the story in

order to grasp its deeper spiritual meaning. We’ll try to do

just that each week. The remaining parables include:

March 1 “The Sower and the Seed”

March 8 “The Hidden Treasure and the Priceless Pearl”

March 15 “The Good Samaritan”

March 22 “The Workers in the Vineyard”

March 29 “The Prodigal Son”

Each of these parables, if patiently and carefully read, will

yield to each of us a transformational insight for living. Each

week on Thursday morning, Shirley Turner will be leading a

study of the same parable. Let’s enter this season with the

commitment to allow God to continue his transformation.

to confess our sins, break the bread and lift the cup of our

Lord, and enter a time of focused prayer. I have found this

service of quiet reflection spiritually renewing for me. I hope

you will be present.

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday (March 29) and

Lenten Bible Study We have begun a Lenten Bible Study on Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in Room 215. Shirley Turner leads this study which will run through March 26. Participants study one of the parables of Jesus each week. On the Sunday following each study, David Helms preaches on the parable as part of this year’s sermon series, “The Parables of Lent: Telling the Stories of Jesus.” The Lenten Bible Study is open to all, and you can join at any time. The cost of the study guide is $5.00.

Opportunities of the Lenten Season The six weeks of Lent help us prepare for the wonder and hope of Easter. We encourage you to observe this holy season by:

• Being present for Bible study and worship each Sunday of Lent.

• Taking time to pray, read, and reflect on the meaning of this season. A devotional guide, complementing our sermon series, "The Parables of Lent," is available at the Information Center outside the Prayer Room.

• Attending our Thursday morning Lenten Bible study, led by Shirley Turner, again complementing our parables sermon series. The study meets at 10 a.m. in Room 215 during the Thursdays of Lent.

• Joining us on Wednesday evenings for our family night meal, followed by music and missions for preschoolers and children. All adults are invited to a time of contemplative worship at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary during the Wednesdays of Lent. This will be a time of quiet, reflective worship with communion each week. Our youth will join us for some of these services.

• Bringing friends and family, perhaps someone looking for a church home, to our "Fish on Friday" Lenten fish fry on Friday, March 27, at 6 p.m. We'll enjoy hot fish (baked or fried) and some cool jazz from an ensemble that includes our own Jerry Mashburn.

• Attending our Maundy Thursday service on April 2 at 7:30 p.m., recalling our Lord's final hours through communion, Scripture, and song.

Leaning toward Easter with you, Tom

This summer, our youth group will be on mission to Nashville, Tennessee. Signup is closed now, and plans are being made for the trip. Every student should have paid the $100.00 deposit by March 1. Below is a payment schedule for you to follow. Details are coming together and will be shared soon. Plan to be part of this special adventure of being on mission for Christ!

YOUTH AUCTION! Saturday, March 21 — Dinner at 5:30 PM — Live Auction Begins at 6:30 PM

Our Youth Auction is right around the corner! We will begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the live and silent auctions starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. If you are going on the mission trip to Nashville this summer, you are required to work at the auction and donate one item to be auctioned off. Items in the past have included baked goods, handmade jewelry, services, electronic appliances, etc. Most anything will work as long as it is new or “gently used.” Please let me know as soon as possible what you will be donating. These items are due by Sunday, March 15. All money raised will go to help pay for our mission trip. But remember, if you do not participate in the auction, you will be required to pay more for the mission trip. If we all work together, I know this will be a great success! Bryan

News DIACONATE

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, pick out from among you seven men and women of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, who we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. — Acts 6:3-4, 7

March begins the election process for the Diaconate of First Baptist Church. Throughout the month, church members are given the opportunity to nominate fellow members for the position of Deacon. What qualities should we look for in a Deacon? 8Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money; 9they must hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10And let them first be tested; then, if they prove themselves blameless, let them serve as deacons. — 1 Timothy 3:8-10 Further consideration should be given to the following virtues:

• Is the candidate a committed member of First Baptist Church Southern Pines? • Does the candidate support the ministries of the church: Sunday School, faithful worship, and faithful service in other areas of the church? • Does the candidate demonstrate a positive attitude toward our church and model Christian commitment?

Please prayerfully consider candidates, ask for their consent, and pray for God’s divine assistance in the election process. Look for inserts in your bulletins starting in March to submit names of men or women for consideration of the Board of the Diaconate. Further information will be available in the church bulletin and on the church website beginning in March.

Dear Knit, Purl, & Pray Ministry, Thank you so very much for the beautiful prayer shawl made for me by Melissa Bearfield. It has brought much com-fort and peace during my recovery after my surgery. Most of all, your prayers were and continue to be felt as I continue to recover. Love and blessings, Carol Wilson Dear Church Family, Our heartfelt thanks for ministering to us prior to and after Carol’s surgery. We’ve felt the Lord’s comfort through your ministry of food, flowers, visits, cards, phone calls, and, most of all, your prayers. David, Tom, and Benny, thank you so much for your hospital and home visits. Your presence, read-ing of God’s word, and your prayers were of great comfort to us. David, your ministry to us through the Lord’s Supper in our home, especially blessed us. We are so thankful for such a loving church family! God’s love shines through each of you, and we are blessed beyond measure. Love, Carol and Roger Wilson Dear Church Family, You have been so faithful to me during my time of recovery from knee replacement. I have truly enjoyed all the beautiful, inspirational cards; gorgeous flowers from the IG Class; delicious food from Cheryl and Brad Burris; home delivery of Sunday bulletins plus visits from Mary Mac; phone calls that cheered me when I felt isolated and blue; PrayerGrams from Bee and Sylvia; and hospital visits from David and Tom. I hope I have remembered to mention all of

you who have ministered to me and given me the presence of Jesus our LORD while sharing your love and service. I’ve missed all of you more than you will ever know. My recovery isn’t over nor is it moving as quickly as I would wish, but any day now, I’m expecting to jump up and click my heels and be with all of you in our beautiful new sanctuary! Glory to God! We are in His hands. Anthea [Tate] Dear First Baptist Church, On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Family Promise, please thank your congregation for the recent donation. This gift helps Family Promise continue its work in providing shelter, meals, and supportive services to homeless families in Moore County. Because of your generosity, the families we serve are able to transition from homelessness to safe, affordable housing. Latasha and her five children recently moved into a rental home after spending over five months with Family Promise. Even though Latasha has worked at the same job for over a year, it took a lot of time and effort to find suitable housing that she and her family could afford. This family and many more are truly thankful for the help you give that enables them to stay with Family Promise in a safe and secure environment until suitable housing becomes available. Thanks again for helping us to continue in this important work that provides critical services to our Moore County neighbors in need. Sincerely, Susan C. Bellew Executive Director Family Promise of Moore County
