Guyton Chrisan Church (DOC), July 2016, Page 1 www.GuytonChrisanChurch.org Pastor’s Peace/Piece Orlando, June 12, one person goes into a nightclub and begins shooting, result- ing in the largest mass shooting in America. You have heard and seen the news and the consequential arguments (none rise to the level of debate) in the airwaves, in the parking lot and on social media. The fear is of like tragedies from “lone wolves” who are “radicalized” or just angry, violent or wanting to go out with a bang. The Church must respond. You can read a letter from the Disciples College of Regional Ministers and the Cabinet of General Ministries at http://disciples.org/ general/letter-church-re-violence/. Disciples General Minister and President, Sharon Watkins has a video message at http://tinyurl.com/j7jvtqw . A Stillspeaking devotion said, “It's now time that we face forthrightly the climate that produced the hate crime at the night club in Orlando.” In the role of prophet (one who speaks for God) and priest (one in whom we feel represented before God) I must also speak. If you want to know how I feel about the arguments we all hear, I will be glad to tell you. But I remember the wise politician who said, “I have friends on both sides of the issue, and I stand with my friends.” I re- member that, especially as Disciples, even when we stand in more than one corner, we have unity if not conformity in the Body of Christ. My lament is that of Jonathan Swift, "They [we] have just enough religion to hate, but not enough to love one anoth- er." Can we all agree on that? If we do agree, then the words and actions of Jesus apply when Christ says love your enemies, go the extra mile with them rather than returning violence for violence. Indeed we need to take reasonable actions for our safety. But nothing will change un- til we also ask our enemies why we are so willing to die for our cause and religion and God when it brings death and destruction to our children. God cannot be pleased. Let’s add the language of love, forgiveness, and peace for our children to the ar- guments and pray that the Spirit of the Living God can direct us toward a different out- come. Hello, can you hear me? The Church is investigating the possible installation of hearing assistance in the Sanctuary. Let us know your thoughts about this!

Congratulations to more recent Gradu-ates: Lainie Jenkins earned a Master of the Arts degree in Conflict Management from Trinity Seminary and College of the Bible, Newberg, Indiana. Karen Cote earned a Master in Theological Studies at Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexing-ton, Kentucky.

Prayer Initiative. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia is planning a season of prayer inspired by the Disci-ples Mission First initiative and our own Region’s prayerful mission planning. Be-ginning September 6 and for sixty-six days, through the Regional Assembly at Valdosta, November 11, we will have an organized list of congregations and mis-sion prayer requests to pray for one an-other. In preparation for that prayer list, we are asked to provide three specific prayer requests for our congregation’s mission to be shared that they may pray for us as we pray for them. Please share your ideas that we may choose the top three.

Children Worship & Wonder We will be having Orientation for new chil-dren entering Worship and Wonder begin-ning August 7, 14 and 21. Parents are welcome these first few weeks. CW&W is a special worship experience for young disciples, ages 3 through Grade 3.

What Happened? At the called Board meeting, June 19, after worship, the Board unanimously voted to employ Georgia Ann Peeler as our Youth Minister. Georgia is from Rin-con. She graduated from Point Universi-ty in 2013, majoring in Bible Studies with a focus in Youth and Family Minis-tries. Her husband, Adam, also a Point graduate, is a student at MacAfee Semi-nary in Atlanta. They expect to move to Effingham County before mid-August. They will be looking for a house to rent. The Board also authorized up to $8,000 to repair the roof on the old Post Of-fice building. The Property Committee is evaluating bids for renovations inside the building and may have a proposal by the July 11 Board meeting.

Sojourners is taking a break!

We will begin again

in September.
