Guyton Chrisan Church (DOC), September 2016, Page 1 www.GuytonChrisanChurch.org Pastor’s Peace/Piece At the August Minister’s Cabinet meeting, we had a discussion about the contin- uing need for stewardship education and promotion in our congregation and in our lives. The average weekly offering collections have been short of the average needed weekly to meet our budget. We can justify the shortfall considering that many have been away for the summer and we can take into account that they are averages and we often do not spend all we budgeted for anyway. But the trend has us talking about stewardship. When congregations talk about stewardship, it is usually about money and the lack of it and the dire institutional needs that have to be paid. That is the business model bottom line. Claiming “we have to run the congregation like a business” leads to cuts in outreach, staff, and programs. We have seen that in many places in the church. There is a reality of shrinking pies to be divided among ministries even in our own denomination and region. We are learning to be more missional and less institu- tional in the church. The business model’s goal is to maximize profits or minimize losses. That is not the church’s goal. We consider prophets before profits. Our goal is to share the good news of Jesus Christ using our gifts and talents and offerings. And that is why we talk about stewardship. So, we will be talking more about stewardship with practical things like our new Living Stewardship paragraph in the Sunday worship bulletin. We will be praying about finishing what we have started in our Ministry Plan. We will keep investing in our future with long-term property development that fits that Ministry Plan. The Apostle Paul commended the churches of Macedonia for their generous giving in all things. He shared their motivation with his other congregations, “First, they gave themselves to the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 8) We have that tradition here at Guyton Christian Church, giving of ourselves, giving 15% to outreach, giving leader- ship to ministries, giving permission for new ministries. We have everything that we need to be stewards of God’s blessings. Let’s keep that in focus and everything else will fall into place. Pastor’s Peace/Piece At the August Minister’s Cabinet meeting, we had a discussion about the contin-

uing need for stewardship education and promotion in our congregation and in our lives.

We are learning to be more missional and less institu-tional in the church.

He shared their motivation with his other congregations, “First, they gave themselves to the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 8) We have that tradition here at Guyton Christian Church, giving of ourselves, giving 15% to outreach, giving leader-ship to ministries, giving permission for new ministries.

We have everything that we need to be stewards of God’s blessings. Let’s keep that in focus and everything else will fall into place.

Work is to begin soon to repair the roof on the old Post Office building. At the July 11 meeting, the Board approved funds suffi-cient to complete the interior renovations to transform the building into offices, and work and meeting spaces.

We will have an “Open Sanctuary” on Sunday, Sep-

tember 11. It’s like an intentional open house for

Sunday School and Worship at Guyton Christian

Church. This is an organized opportunity to invite a

neighbor, co-worker, family member, or friend to

come and see what YOU like about being a part of

this church family. We will have a covered-dish

luncheon after worship that day. In prayerful mo-

ments, think

about what

you are passion-

ate about in our Christian walk together and then

think of someone(s) with whom you would like to

share that passion. Then MAKE CONTACT! We plan

to have a follow-up social for our visitors to see how

they might take part in who we are and what we

are doing.

Open

Sanctuary!

American Diabetes Association, Westview

Nursing Home, or Guyton Christian Church.

Prayer Initiative. The Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ) in Georgia is planning a

season of prayer inspired by the Disciples

Mission First initiative and our own Region’s

prayerful mission planning. Beginning Sep-

tember 6 and for sixty-six days, through the

Regional Assembly at Valdosta, November 11,

we will have an organized list of congrega-

tions and mission prayer requests to pray for

one another. In preparation for that prayer list,

we are asked to provide three specific prayer

requests for our congregation’s mission to be

shared that they may pray for us as we pray

for them. Please share your ideas that we may

choose the top three.

Voting. The Apostle Paul admonishes the Ro-

mans (13-1-3) Be a good citizen. All govern-

ments are under God. Insofar as there is peace

and order, it’s God’s order. So live responsibly

as a citizen. We have the privilege of voting.

Are you ready? Voter registration required by

Oct 11. You can register or update your voter

registration at http://tinyurl.com/opo4bp8. You

may request an absentee ballot online at http://

tinyurl.com/z3ry8xz, by mail, 284 GA Hwy

119 S, Springfield, 31329; or by telephone,

754-8030; Submit your absentee ballot Sept

23 through Nov 4, by mail, by fax 754-8408;

or in person at the Board of Elections office.

You may vote early. Advance voting in-

person is at the Board of Elections office or

the old Marlow Elementary School, 4752 GA

Hwy 17S, Guyton, Oct 17-Nov 4. Saturday

Advance voting in-person is, Oct 29, 9a-4p.

The General election is Tuesday, Nov 8, 7a-

7p.

Lightening on July 17 damaged some of our

Audio/Visual equipment we use in the sanctu-

ary. You have noticed we do not have hymn

texts projected on the wall and that the sound-

board from the Center has been moved to the

sanctuary. You probably do not know that

Lamar Hall scrambled to get us temporarily

patched together for VBS the next day (when

we discovered the problem). We have insur-

ance coverage beyond our $1,000 deductible

but the projectors and soundboard were

shipped back to manufacturers for repair esti-

mates. We expect to be back in the age of

technology soon even as we worship and

praise with the resources we have had for gen-

erations: unamplified visions, hearts, and

minds.
