2 April 21, 2019 | Easter Sunday

THE PASTOR’S POINTS HAPPY EASTER! If you are joining us for the first time, WELCOME! If you are joining us again, WELCOME BACK! If you’re not sure why you are here, WELCOME ANYWAY! Please know that you are always welcome at St. Andrew’s. William White tells this story: A teacher was speaking with a group of children, and a soapmaker interrupted him in order to embarrass him. “How can you claim that religion is good and valid when there is so much suffering and evil in the world? What good are all the books and sermons that your religion has produced?” The Teacher motioned to a small child in the crowd. “This is Eric,” the Teacher said. “He is three. He is also dirty. I ask you, what good is soap when Eric and hundreds of children like him are dirty? How can you pretend that soap is effective?” “What a foolish argument,” the soapmaker protested. “If soap is to be effective it must be used.” “Precisely,” the Teacher answered. “If the teachings of our Master are to be effective, they must be used.” Whether you are here in a Catholic Church for the first time or the umpteenth time – your presence is an invitation from God, whether you may realize it or not. (Sometimes those invitations come in funny ways – your mom said ‘We’re paying your college tuition and you WILL come to Easter Mass with the family!’, or ‘Grandma is going to be here for Easter and we are ALL going to Mass. And that’s that!’) God has endless ways to invite us into His love. William O’Malley, SJ, came up with a list of basic essentials to our following of Christ, regardless of our denominational flavor. Perhaps these might resonate with your spring-infused soul on this Easter day.

1. Jesus is the embodiment of God. Deny that, and you can be a saint, but not a Christian. Some-how – don’t ask how – the divine Word focused Himself into the man Jesus Christ. If you want the definitive insight into God’s personality, what God likes and doesn’t like, look at Jesus.

2. Jesus/God died in order to rise, so that He could uproot, once for all, our fear of death, to prove that life is not ultimately futile or meaningless. And He rose to share with us the divine aliveness, to engraft us into the life of God. We are no longer just the human family; we are part of the Trin-ity family.

3. To become part of the Trinity family we must give up the values of ‘the world’ (me first!) and take on the values of ‘the kingdom’ (them first: God and neighbor). Our choices are based on motives 180 degrees away from the motives of monopoly capitalism. We can sum up the gospel in one word: forgiveness. Forgiveness of others AS God has repeatedly forgiven us.

4. We celebrate our community dedicated to service at a meal. We are a community dedicated to healing, who are energized, fed and sent forth from a meal at which Jesus/God focuses Himself beyond time and space into bits of bread and cups of wine and thence into us.

Finally, if you have any interest in looking into our Catholic faith, please feel free to contact us. No pressure, just invitation. You can journey with us for as long (or as short) as you wish. Thank you for joining us this Easter. May you leave behind you a string of empty tombs! HAPPY EASTER!

A Change in First Communion Celebrations First Holy Communion for the children of our parish will be celebrated every weekend in May during our regularly scheduled weekend Mass-es: Saturday 5:30 p.m., Sunday 9:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Our First Communicants and their families will have pews reserved near the front of the church. Please warmly welcome our children and their guests as the Communicants receive the Eucharist for the first time.

First Holy Communion is ideally celebrated in the context of the Sun-day liturgy. Liturgical actions are not private actions but celebrations of the Church itself, which is the "sacrament of unity."

For questions about elementary faith formation and sacramental preparation, please contact Katie Fortunato at elemfaith@ saintandrew.org, or call 919-362-0685, ext. 125.

Welcome to the following people who received sacraments at the

Easter Vigil!

Stephen Ngin Dominic Paone

Devin Simmonds

Daison Simmonds

Please join in prayer for these individuals!

Earth Day 2019 During the World Environment Day in 2013, Pope Francis noted that “we are losing the attitude of wonder, contemplation, listening to creation. The implications of living in a horizontal manner [is that] we have moved away from God, we no longer read His signs.” As many communities and groups celebrate Earth Day this week, may we reflect deeply on our moral and religious responsibility to care for the environment. As we enjoy all the signs of this spring of the renewal of life, let us join all creation in praising God. Then let us live out our gratitude for the gifts of the earth by engaging in actions, habits, and public policies that preserve the fruitfulness of the earth, to better protect both human beings and the whole community of life that God created and loves.

Child Abuse Prevention Month DID YOU KNOW that the Diocese of Raleigh requires that all people who work in leadership with children and youth in our parishes and schools attend a training about how to recognize and report child abuse. The training details five steps to prevent child sexual abuse: 1. Knowing the warning signs of abuse! 2. Reporting suspected abuse to appropriate authorities. 3. Controlling access to children by carefully selecting the adults who work with children and youth. 4. Monitoring all programs for the safety of children and youth. 5. Awareness of and sensitive to the lives of children. For assistance, call the Diocese of Raleigh Office of Child and Youth Protection at 1-866-535-7233 or email [email protected]. April is national Prevent Child Abuse month. Please know that the diocese is working diligently working to provide safe environments for children.

April 28 Second Collection: Catholic Home Missions Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40% of dioceses in the United States are considered mission territory because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work in their communities. Your support of this appeal eases the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. Find more information at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

RCIA Inquiry The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and Children of Catechetical Age (RCIA) is a series of rites. These rites are conducted in the context of learning about the faith and spiritual information, through which a person is fully in-corporated into the Body of Christ, the Church. People who are involved in the RCIA process are either catechumens (those who were never baptized) or candidates (those who were baptized in a different faith tradition or a bap-tized Catholic who was never catechized). It is a journey to see how gospel values and the truths of the faith can be lived. Candidates and catechumens are mentored throughout the process by a team of catechists and sponsors. For more information about RCIA, contact Deacon Rich Mickle at 919-362-0414, ext. 124, or email [email protected].

RCIA Inquiry will meet twice monthly (2nd & 4th Tuesdays). The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23. All are welcome!
