Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

We welcomed Julia Allen, Robin Cordin and Libby Robinson to our Projects Committee meeting on Thursday last. Julia may be interested in joining as a member, which we’d be delighted if she would seriously consider doing so.

The Board met on Wednesday and Minutes will be distributed when they have been done by our Sec. Daniel. Both meetings reflected the fact that the club is active, with an impressive number of projects either completed or in the pipeline.

The Magnifying Microscope project is racing ahead with WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley, the CEO of STAWA John Clarke and now Roy Hallam from Watercorp all fully behind it.

The Burundi Peace Choir made their CD during the week and Melpo reported they sang divinely. Most of the money has been secured to cover the production of the CD, however a small loan is still required and this is being looked after in part by Rtn. Bryant Stokes. Again, thank

you Bryant for both the monies for the Peace Choir and the fees involved with setting up the club’s Charitable Foundation. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated by all. Many of the other items discussed will be in the body of the Bulletin.

I’m delighted to announce that the Club has its first Honorary member in our Premier Colin Barnett. With the agreement of the Board, on 5th October, Rtn. Bill Hassell kindly emailed a letter from me to the Hon. Colin Barnett inviting him to become an Honorary member and on Thursday last his office emailed Bill with his acceptance.

On a sadder note, Anne McAnearney emailed to advise that her circumstances had changed recently and she tendered her resignation. Thank you for your contribution Anne, we were just getting to know you. You will be missed and we’d love to have you rejoin in the future if find you are able.

Dear Enid has endured a very distressing week in Bethesda Hospital, however, when Ken visited her on Saturday morning she was brighter and on the improve.

A full and speedy recovery to you Enid.

This week’s edition of the Post Newspaper saw an article and photograph of the presentation of the club’s inaugural Community Service Award to Bethesda Hospital staff member, Danielle Dyson. Ken sent photographs and an article into the Post on this Award and the Climb for A Smile (not printed) plus information on our Quiz night next Wednesday, which gained a mention under ‘What’s on in POST community’. Thanks Ken for the first local publicity for the RC of Freshwater Bay.

Our first major fundraiser this week with our Quiz night on Wednesday. Please keep promoting and encouraging friends, relatives and workmates to form tables or just come along and join a table. Jane Armstrong is our star with almost 50 (six tables) which is outstanding.

Bright and early Friday morning Ken and I will be heading to Adelaide, along with Prof. Bryant Stokes for the 50th Anniversary celebration of these two o u t s t a n d i n g f e l l o w s graduation in medicine. This will mean there will be no President’s letter next Bulletin. By the way Bryant

and Ken, the world is a better place for your outstanding contribution to medicine and the world. Congratulations and long may you continue to serve.

The Future of Rotary really is in our Hands and the new Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay can be extremely proud of achievements thus far. I encourage each member to keep up your invaluable contribution to building a better world and thank each and everyone for what you are doing.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

Pull-up BannerSimone has ordered a pull up banner for the club.  Cost will be under $200 and delivery will be 2-3 weeks.  It will be very valuable to discourage those who ‘walk’ into our meetings. Also excellent for promotion of the Club at fundraisers, functions and events.

Club BannerMarcos will put a club banner design together, possibly based on the pull up banner, which will be circulated to

members for consideration prior to going ahead with an order.   Apparently banners can be produced in Bali for $2.50-3.00 each.  Our contact does not post so the banners will have to be brought back from Bali.  Daniel and Claire are holidaying there in December.

Christmas/Birthday FunctionThe Nedlands Golf Club, Melvista Ave, Nedlands, 6.30pm for 7.00pm on Thursday 17th December.  Cost $45 for a three course traditional Christmas dinner.  Special diets (eg vegetarians) will be catered for so please advise when paying.  It will be a great night so please put the date in your diary now and also feel free to invite friends and family.  WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley will be our speaker. She is unquestionably one of the best around Perth right now and we are almost certain to have Rik Symons and his group to entertain us.

BBQ at EllenbrookRegular social activities are vital for the members of the club to bond and get to know each other.   With the great brunch at the Hassell’s last week, Claire and Daniel have kindly offered for members to have a lunch / barbecue at their home in Ellenbrook on Sunday, 10th January.  Another date for your diaries.

LinneysLinney’s in Subiaco provide opportunities for clubs and organisations to learn more about diamonds/pearls etc. where they   provide drinks, nibbles, goody bags, and so on.  It is being considered as a vocational visit by the Projects committee.   Rotary

clubs often programme in one or more vocational visits throughout a year to places of business or interest to members and spouses and this would be the club’s first.

Board StructureWith elections to take place in early December for the Board for the following Rotary year, discussion took place at the meeting last Wednesday evening as to the structure of the Board.  Much discussion took place prior to the club’s Charter and it was finally decided to give the new Leadership Plan a try.

It is considered that the old ‘Avenues of Service’ is a better model and we will revert back in part to this.  The current structure has stripped the Club Service Committee so this will go back to the old, with having on the Board the Pres., Pres. Elect, V. Pres (the immediate PP), Treasurer, Secretary and Membership Director, all of whom form in part the Club Service Committee.   We will then have a Community Service Director, Youth and Vocational Service Director and International Service Director.

Members, please give consideration to nominating for positions.

Community Referral ProgramThe National Australia Bank have a formal agreement with Rotary that is called the Communi ty Referra l Program.   It works something like if a clubs signs up to the program any members who take out a housing loan with NAB or increase an existing loan by $50,000 then $2,000 will be given to the club’s Charity account to use for projects.  We’ll look into further.

Waist Disposal ChallengeDaniel and Simone spent Saturday learning about this and will bring information to the club over the coming weeks.  It is purely voluntary to participate.

Nedlands Council ElectionsCongratulations (I think) to new Councillor Ken (Coastal Ward) and commiserations to Toni who lost her seat in Melvista.

MLC and YouthSue Shaw, MLC School Psychologists and Career Development Coordinator has written to the club inviting members who are interested to become part of MLCs Career Mentoring Plan.  Also asked about the possibility of work experience for students and requested a list of members / businesses who are interested in placing a

student for work experience.  Members or ‘Friends of the Club’ interested in becoming involved with MLC and these youth projects please communicate with Director Rob.

Rotarians Respond to Asia-Pacific DisastersBy Ryan Hyland  Rotary International News 16 October 2009

Rotarians are ramping up aid to victims left homeless by a series of disasters that struck areas in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.A devastating tsunami that hit American Samoa, Samoa, and Tonga; earthquakes in Indonesia; two typhoons in the Philippines; and flooding in India have left thousands dead and millions displaced.Rotarians are focusing on distributing relief goods, including food, water, medicine, clothing, and shelter.

Rotary clubs from districts in Australia and New Zealand are leading efforts to bring emergency response kits to victims of the 29 September

tsunami that wiped out several villages in American Samoa and Samoa.

Rotarians and Rotaractors in Samoa have distributed more than 200 kits, costing roughly US$55,000 total. Full of blankets, food, clothing, cooking utensils, tools, and medicine, they were donated by Rotary clubs in New Zealand in collaboration with Air New Zealand.

"I'm amazed at how fast the support came," says Leanne Jaggs, governor of District 9920, which covers several islands in the South Pacific. "I am proud to be a Rotarian right now because of the way everyone comes together when needed." Learn  more about these relief efforts and how you can help.A violent earthquake flattened areas on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on 30 September, killing more than 1,100 people and leaving an estimated 500,000 homeless. Immediately after the quake, District 3400 set

up a disaster relief team to survey hard-hit communities and worked with rescue agencies to distribute tools and about 1.5 tons of medical supplies to stricken areas.

Learn   more about these relief efforts and how you can help.Tw o p o w e r f u l t y p h o o n s a l s o slammed into the Philippines in late September and early October, causing widespread flooding and landslides. The Rotary clubs of C a b u y a o a n d Cabuyao Circle, Laguna, distributed 700 relief packs containing rice, sardines, and instant noodles.

D i s t r i c t 3 7 7 0 designated the Rotary

Club of Meycauayan Uptown, Bulacan, as the custodian of all donations from the district.

"All districts in the Philippines are continuously unrelenting in their efforts to help all these victims, no matter how long it will take," says Ruben V. Mabagos, District 3770 extension chair.

Also in early October, flash floods and landslides swamped much of southern India, leaving 2.5 million people homeless. Rotary clubs in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad have begun providing relief supplies to victims in the Mehboodnagar District.

Clothes, clean water, and medicine are still desperately needed, says Jhansi Premanand, World Community Service chair for District 3150.

"The catastrophe of these floods is unprecedented, and the number of families displaced unimaginable," says Premanand. "As Rotarians, it is necessary to

extend all our help to these victims."

E-mail   Jhansi Premanand for information on how to help.

ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster-relief organization supported by Rotary clubs, has deployed response teams to distribute hundreds of boxes of supplies to several areas hit hard by the disasters.

The Great Bike Ride 2009The Great Bike Ride was established in 2004 and immediately established itself as one of Perth’s most popular community participation cycling events.

The event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Perth to raise significant and vital funds for the St John of God Foundation Horizon House Project, Hope for Children and the Heart Foundation – so by fundraising, you will not only be helping one charity, but helping three very important causes make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.

This year's event will be held on Sunday 22nd November 2009. All three rides start and finish at Langley Park and p a r t i c i p a n t s w i l l experience a visually spectacular and scenic tour of the Perth Swan River whilst taking on the awesome challenge of a 10km, 53km or 106km course!!!

Since this event is really all about riders getting their friends, colleagues and families to donate money to the charities through sponsorship (and enjoying a great ride around the river of course) we thought we would give you the chance to gain free entry through your fundraising efforts!!

When you register, simply choose whether to pay the entry fee or to fundraise. If you intend to fundraise for free entry DO NOT pay your entry fee. Once you reach t h e m i n i m u m fundraising target, your outstanding entry fees will automatically be adjusted to $0.00 and you will receive free entry; it’s that easy!!!

To make this event successful, not only do we need you to participate but we also need you to fundraise. Your registration fee only covers the cost of running the event. That’s why we really need you to make a special effort to hit your fundraising target to make this event worthwhile for the three charities involved and those they help.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 16: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about what a US$100 can do.

It is as simple as having a notebook, pencil and glue. In Pavas, a poor district in San Jose, Costa Rica a packet of educational materials means

the difference between an education and working on the street.

Most public schools in Costa Rica are under funded and lack many basic supplies, so the Rohrmoser Rotary Club, Costa Rica developed a packet of teaching materials for students and partnered with the Vancouver Rotary Club, Canada to distribute 777 packets to children in five

very poor elementary schools.

$100 buys 15 packets. Without this project many students would not be able to continue their education and would be forced to drop out of school.

When Every Rotarian, Every Year participates, our foundation is able to continue

to build a brighter future for the children of the world.

News Update

13 October, 2009

A project in Australia of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills

Diary of delivery and hope. In just twelve days, ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members have assessed and assisted more than 8,000 survivors in the Sumatra area with emergency ShelterBox housing. The following is an excerpt from SRT Mike Greenslade’s reports together with his pictorial of events as they support those who have lost everything. Saturday October 10, 2009. “We received our supplies for a camp we are building in the Agam area (some 4 hours drive north of Padang) where they lost their houses due to a landslide. Free transport was provided and we managed to get 100 ShelterBoxes in but have to wait for Oxfam to complete the sorting of water and sanitation. We will return tomorrow to start our building. We dropped another 15 ShelterBoxes in Jawi Duku and have organised a drop helicopter (courtesy of US Navy) tomorrow to an isolated village called Padang Alai and will also check out for other remote areas that need our help when up in the Chinook. 177 ShelterBoxes arrived today, a further 360 tomorrow and probably more on the way. Transportation is not an issue for us as we have the support of free trucks, free choppers (US Navy) and free C130s (Australian/American/Indonesian Air Forces).

Sunday October 11, 2009. Busy day today both on the ground and in the air. The RAAF flew in 144 ShelterBoxes and a further 164 were flown in by Garuda paid for by Rotary District 3400 of Jakarta. One SRT team completed an aerial survey in a US Navy Puma helicopter and confirmed the remote village of Hula Banda was in dire need of emergency shelter. We are receiving generous co-operation from USAID and the US Navy who flew 45 ShelterBoxes and a 3 man SRT plus local volunteers to assist us.”

Samoan school back to normal thanks to ShelterBox New Zealand SRT members Owen Smith and Walter Van der Kley distributed 20 ShelterBoxes to families currently living in the Ulutogia Primary School. At the request of Red Cross, this now means the children of the village can return to their school and begin some normality in their lives. With the assistance of the Rotary Club of Apia members, Owen and Walter assisted families also in the Lepa, Saliapaga and Satitoa back areas of Samoa with the distribution of 80 ShelterBoxes so far. Owen said: “Believe me, the survivors of this disaster and very, very grateful to Rotary and to ShelterBox for their help – they now have a home to start over again.”

Below is a letter just received from ADG Slade in District 9920. “I am and would like to say how wonderful it has been to work with the ShelterBox gentlemen: Owen from Kerikeri Rotary Club and Walter from Ashburton Rotary Club. They have done the greatest of jobs on the coast considering only two of them with assistance from Apia Rotary members 78 of the best tents have been distributed and installed within a short time after the tsunami. The accompanied components of these kits to catch and purify water plus the tools, mosquito nets and comforting blankets are just the most ideal blessings for the victims. One old man yelled out to me 'thank you for the mosquito net. I was worried the mosquitoes were going to kill me after surviving the tsunami'. ShelterBoxes is the perfect way to help these people get back on their feet. Last Saturday at the coast Rotary was the only organisation on the road working. Not even Red Cross were there. We had a group of vehicles of ShelterBoxes followed by the Emergency Boxes and distributed the last 40 ShelterBoxes and 50 Emergency Boxes. It was the greatest gifts before White Sunday. Everybody is talking about the Rotary Tents to be the best ones around and everybody wants one. I am humbly proud to be a Rotarian and we may not be as loud as Red Cross but we are certainly doing a great job going straight to the needy and touching the hearts of the people. To see the tears in their eyes as they hug you and the grateful smiles as they say 'thank you' convinces you Rotary has made the difference in their lives. 'To the world you are just one, to them you are the World'. THANK YOU ROTARY NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA AND FIJI FROM ALL THE TSUNAMI VICTIMS OF SAMOA. IT HAS BEEN WELL RECEIVED AND CERTAINLY INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS OF HOW GREAT ROTARY IS.” Tuifaasisina Maraea Slade ADG District 992O International Director ROTARY CLUB OF APIA/SAMOA

Extended tour for Aussie SRT in Philippines Rotarian and volunteer SRT Peter Pearce has virtually spent the last six weeks in disasters helping those survivors who have lost everything in Manila, the Philippines. Another 197 ShelterBoxes will be delivered to tomorrow and our SRT members will also visit the Botolan region where 310 ShelterBoxes were set up last month. This region has again been hit with extreme weather.
