Koro Scholarship Fund

New Freshwater Bay Rotary Club

members Mignon Shardlow and

Alistair Brown are excited about

receiving Rotary Australia World

Community Service registration for

the Fijian education charity they set

up three years ago.

The couple started the Koro

Scholarship Fund to help capable

students on the Fijian outer island of

Koro to attend high school when

their parents were unable to afford

school fees.

The RAWCS registration enables

donors to the scholarship fund to

make tax-deductible donations. At

the moment the Fund supports 13

students at the Koro Island High

School but Mignon and Alistair hope

they can raise more money so that

the Fund can extend the dream of

education to children from all of the

villages on the island.

“Parents on Koro Island value

education and want to send their

children to school but they find it

very difficult to raise the $100

necessary to pay annual school fees,”

Dr Shardlow said.

The former volunteer teacher on the

island said the island was still a very

traditional subsistence economy with

families growing enough crops and

catching just enough fish to feed their

families. Selling surplus crops at

market was uncommon on the island

largely because transport services to

the island were irregular and

expensive.

“In Australia we often take the

universal provision of education for

granted but on Koro Island every

child considers themselves extremely

lucky if their parents manage to pay

for their school fees.”

Mignon and Alistair plan to hold a

fundraising function this coming

summer to raise money for the Fund.

“We haven‟t decided on the type of

event we will hold but whatever it is

we will be inviting our fellow club

members to join us in making it a

success,” Dr Shardlow said.

“We are grateful to the Freshwater

Bay Rotary Club and the North Suva

Rotary Club in Fiji for being partners

in the project and wish to thank Dr

Ken Collins for his work in making

the RAWCS registration possible.”

RI Presidential Citation and Changemaker Award

Since its inception, the RCFB has

achieved RI Presidential Citations.

Each RI President develops criteria

that he considers important in

assisting him to achieve a better

world through Rotary Service.

For Clubs to achieve a Citation, it is

important that goals are set by each

Committee before the new Rotary

year commences or very early in the

new year.

RI Pres. Kalyan Banerjee has split the

usual Presidential Citation into two

awards this year. The first continues

to be called the 2011-12 Presidential

Citation and focuses on two key areas

of Rotary – the Rotary Foundation

and Membership.

The second is a new recognition

which he has named 2011-12

Changemaker Award and this is for a

balanced program achieved though

working with each of the Avenues of

Service which are Club, Vocational,

Community, International and New

Generations.

Below is the criteria for a

Presidential Citation and next week

the Changemaker Award criteria will

be written up in the Bulletin.

Criteria for the 2011-12 Presidential Citation

Focused on membership and

continued support of The Rotary

Foundation, BOTH criteria must be

attained for recognition.

Club recognition has TWO Rotary

Foundation components

and FOUR membership

components.

MANDATORY: The Rotary

Foundation (two components)

· 100% Annual Programs Fund

participation ( with EVERY active

member to personally contribute

some amount between 1.7.2011

and 31.3.2012) and

· US$100 minimum per capita in

club contributions to the Annual

Programs Fund.

MANDATORY:

Membership (four components)

· Minimum net increase of one

member; and

· 85% minimum retention rate.

And achievement of two of the

following four components:

· 2% increase in qualified women

· 2% increase in qualified younger

professionals (under age of 45)

· Induction of one or more

RI/Rotary Foundation program

Alumni

· Increased diversity (e.g.

classification, gender, age).

A major change in RIP Kalyan‟s

criteria is that it is MANDATORY for

a PERSONAL donation to be made

by EVERY member to the Rotary

Foundation. This amount is tax

deductible. Please see PRID Ken re

how this is done.

Updates on Members
