Last Week‟s Meeting

Matthew Gabriele, a young man

who recently scaled Mt Everest,

gave a comprehensive and

extremely interesting account

of his recent experience in

Nepal climbing Mt Everest.

Matthew‟s Power Point and

photographs provided a graphic

picture of his adventure. He

also brought along some of the

equipment used on the climb,

explaining how, since the

ascent by Sir Edmond Hillary,

the gear had significantly

improved.

Rotary‟s Connection to Mt Everest

Around six years ago two

Rotaractors climbed to the summit

of Mt Everest, hoisted the Rotary

Flag and got married up there.

Visitors and Guests

Delighted to welcome

back Jill Henderson

who is a Psychologist and

colleague of Toni James.

Rhonda and Eddie Roe from the

Rotary Club of Mandurah, who

are working tirelessly to promote

a return to teaching reading the

„old fashion way‟ with phonics.

Also, welcomed was Varun

Moudgal who came as a guest of

the Yudelman‟s as Varun found

their Maiti Foundation Website

and through RAWCS has made a

$1,000 contribution.

Induction/Welcome of the Yudelman‟s

New Membership Director PP Jim

Gould inducted Gillian and

welcomed Clifford into the RC

Freshwater Bay.

Welcome again and delighted to

have you both with us.

Meeting 13th July

A social night at Bill

and Sue Hassell‟s.

Ambra and Anna will

cook a modern Italian

meal for us. Time:

6.30pm at 20

Loneragan Street,

Nedlands. Cost: $10

per person and BYO

drinks.

Should be a wonderful

night. Many thanks

Bill, Sue and Margaret.

The End of Polio Breakfast The Rotaract Club

of Subiaco has

taken on

spearheading a

joint Rotary/

Rotaract/Global

Poverty Project

Breakfast

on Wednesday,

5th October,

2011.

The Rotaractors have put up the

deposit for the Perth Convention

Centre and need to sell 300-500

tickets to make the event

worthwhile. They require the full

support of every Rotary Club to

buy tables and for members of

Clubs who have business or

corporate connections to buy

tables. The cost is $50.00 per

person OR $260.00 for a table

of eight. It is significantly less to

purchase a table than to pay $50

p/p. Time is

7.00am - 9.00am.

With a final push being made to

see the end to Polio, this event is to

motivate and inform not only

Rotarians, but Politicians and

Corporations about what Rotary, in

conjunction with WHO, UNICEF

and the CDC have been striving

towards for more than a quarter of

a century.

See attached brochure. (Page 6)

NEW HORIZONS

Well done Freshwater Bay The RC of Freshwater Bay can be pleased with the recognition received this year for its efforts by both RI, with the Presidential Citation with Distinction, the District Bulletin Award and the Indigenous Service Award. Along with this, the only Community based Interact Club in the District was established and the Microscopes Project in Schools has gone from strength to strength. A host of other minor projects have also been carried out, mainly in the New Generations and International Service areas. This Rotary year, with Jenny Gill working on Fundraising, we should have the funds to do much more.

Storm the Stage Kathleen Elliott, PE of the Interact Club of Freshwater Bay has nominated for this year‟s Storm the Stage. Initiated by the RC of Cannington, Storm the Stage is a unique competition open to young people aged 16 to 19 years with a passion for drama and musical theatre. · They have a chance to win $5,000 in each of two categories as well as $1,000 in the Briggs-Gibbs Award (two members of the RC of Cannington – Don Briggs and Gerry Gibbs). · Receive guidance from arts mentors and judges · Acquire a more intimate knowledge of stagecraft and make lasting friendships with likeminded people

· Categories are for Best Performance Drama and Best Performance Musical Theatre. Local heats start in June, winners feed into semi-finals which begin in July which lead into State Finals. The National Final will take place in Brisbane in November. Website: www.stormthestage.com

Annual Dues Invoices are out and dues are payable within 30 days. To members who have remitted, thank you and to all others, remittance as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Please consider Volunteering Members to host the inbound Uni Focus GSE Team from Fiji to Wiluna are still being sought. Dates are 6-10th September and 6-8th October. Please let PRID Ken know if you are able to host one or more of the

team members or to act as a driver during their stay with the Club. Like many programs of the

Rotary Foundation,

GSE is based on personal people from another culture thus promoting

World

Understanding. GSE is a wonderful program, so please consider becoming involved by hosting and or driving. In hosting only a bed and perhaps a few meals are required (depends how many meals are organised for the Team to attend out).

News from the Inbound GSE Team from Normandy, France. Members who attended the meeting last year when the Club hosted the Inbound GSE Team from D. 1640 in France will recall the great Team headed up by Team Leader Patrick Lebailly. The Team Members Sarah, Vanessa, Adnen and the „golfer; Sebastian who had a great sense of humour gave a very good presentation wearing their red berets. TL Patrick communicated just this week to say he has just handed over as President of his Club and that both Adnen and Sebastian have become Rotarians.

Interact Hamish and Jen are doing a fantastic job with the young people in the Interact Club of Freshwater Bay. Last Thursday‟s meeting Jen organised for a nurse from SCGH to talk to the members about how to best organise a Talent Show as they have agreed to have a Talent Show as a fundraising activity. After the short presentation, a movie „Born Into Brothels‟ was screened. Pizza, chocolates, popcorn, choc milk and other foods were consumed as 13 members enjoyed a coolish night, wrapped in warm gear and ugg boots. Well done Pres. Truman Forrest for your leadership with this fantastic group of young people. Members are encouraged to attend a meeting at any time to get a feel for Interact and what they are about.

RYDA The „Evaluation‟ from the last Rotary Youth Driver Awareness on 23rd June at Mirrabooka SHS was received by New Generations Director Hamish will give members an idea of how valuable this project is to our year 11 future drivers.

Comments

“The RYDA program should be

compulsory for all Year 11s in every

school, every state and every

country.”

“The day went very well but it

would be better if the presenters

had more time.”

“Hope all goes well for Dan.”

“I hope every year this session will

occur.”

“Seeing Danny made me think how

serious speeding is and I hated

seeing him like that because it

broke my heart.”

“I am more aware about how

important it is to be a safe driver.”

“Today was a real eye-opener

about road safety and what can

happen.”

“Some of the sessions were heart

breaking but real eye openers. It

was great.”

“I have learnt things today that we

will carry for the rest of our life.”

“I would like to thank all the

organisers for the program.”

The RCFB is running a RYDA for

some 200 students from Newman

College on 16th August from

9.00am to 4.00pm. Volunteers are

URGENTLY required to help out

on the day. If you are able to assist

for even a couple of hours please

contact Hamish. Working with

Children Cards are required.

Forms are available from any Post

Office or from Sec. Di. Forms need

to be signed by Pres. Bryant and

remember, these forms take time

to be processed so if you require a

card to help with RYDA please

complete it right away as time is

passing rapidly.

Microscopes for Schools Project

A flurry of enquires have come in

this past week. Three firm orders

have been placed and they are from

the RC Narrogin for 95 units for

four schools, RC Esperance Bay for

a further 20 units and RC

Wanneroo for one school (30

units) in response to a request

from a school.

Travelling Rotarians

Safe travels to Warren and

Rosemary Milner who head off to

their International College in

Wimbledon this weekend

returning end of August. Also

returning at the end of August and

leaving for the USA this weekend

are Debbie and Billie Cash.

Clifford and Gillian Yudelman are

our third couple flying out this

weekend and they will return from

Europe at the end of July. Br

James is of course off again with

one of his Pilgrimages of Hope and

Stuart James will again be a part of

his team.

Enjoy your travels. You will all be

missed and we look forward to

your return.
