Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Visiting us from the UK last meeting was Bill Hassell’s sister Anne Damon. Anne was with us for our very first Christmas function, the day before the Club was given its Charter. Lovely to have you back with us Anne.

Whilst on the Hassell family, we are delighted to have Sue back after her illness, now looking fit again and thank you to Bill for offering to assist Simone with the property box, wines etc. the meeting Ken and I will be in the Philippines.

World Understanding and Peace Day, 23rd February, Rotary’s 105th birthday was highlighted early in the month with a brief overview on the Rotary Foundation by Past Director, Past Trustee Ken Collins.

Ken has had a long and deep involvement with the Rotary Foundation, commencing as a self funded Rotary volunteer back in 1983, initially as a medico, then through the RF assessing projects, as the major expert on Polio for the Asia / Pacific region, representing Rotary

on Polio Assessment Teams, for meetings in Asia and Africa with WHO and sorting out problems in Asia at times when Polio spiralled out of control. To date he has served as a Rotary volunteer on 24 occasions, along with this we have been involved with more than 150 matching grant projects in numerous countries covering all manner of humanitarian projects. Not yet in the modern

computer age, slides of a few of these projects were shown to give members an idea of the kinds of projects clubs and Rotarians fund.

Along with the humanitarian arm of the Rotary Foundation is its educational arm of S c h o l a r s h i p s – Ambassadorial, Peace Fellows and the short term Peace Scholars plus the ever popular Group Study

Exchange Teams which traverse the globe building good will and understanding between nations. The Rotary Foundation is a mighty tool by which to advance Rotary’s major objective which is to bring about world understanding and peace. It is only limited in achieving this by the funds it has to carry out its magnificent work. Ken passed around Paul Harris Society and

Centurian Forms and encouraged members to consider making the RF one of their ‘Charities’ and personally supporting the Rotary Foundation as all contributions are tax deductible.

Progress is finally being made on the Club Foundation and the necessary paperwork has been submitted to the Dept. of Commerce Consumer Protection for their March meeting to extend the Charitable Licence for the RCFB for a further three years as our initial licence was issued for just one year.

Simone has set down our meeting on Thursday 4th March as a ‘Fundraising Brainstorm’. Here is an opportunity for all members to contribute ideas and expertise in this area as it is time the Club started to look at one or more major activities to bring in the funds to carry out the

projects we’d all like to see happen. Please come along with fresh ideas and help us to achieve a positive outcome.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

Change in Meeting DayPRID Ken sent out the required notification to all members last Monday to change the Club By-laws at our meeting on 18th February. The change will be in our meeting day, which will move from a Thursday to a Wednesday.   Whilst the vote will occur at this week’s meeting, the change will not take place until Wednesday, 17th March as there are outside speakers already in place until that time.

Burundi Peace ChoirOn Monday, 15th February, a small ‘launch’ will take place for the Burundi Peace Choir’s CD.

Simone has put a small website in place for the Choir and it is accessible at www.burundipeacechoir.comA great project for the club by bringing together funds for the Choir to produce the CD, the right person in Max Kay to project them into the entertainment arena and Simone’s expertise in providing them with their website.   Well done to all concerned.

Club FoundationWith invaluable assistance from Pres Kerry McAuliffe, progress is being made with our Club Foundation.  It will be named the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay Charity Fund Incorporated.   To facilitate approval from the ATO, it was agreed the initial application would be just for Australian projects, however, once approval is given, an application will be submitted to broaden it to include overseas projects.   The necessary paperwork has been sent to the ATO however it could take up to 28 days for approval to be given.  Names and details of the current President, Secre tary, Treasurer, President Elect plus three members who have agreed to be Trustees of the fund have been provided to Kerry McAuliffe.  The solicitors will place the required advertisement in the paper and advise members of the club when this takes place.

Meeting at Christ Church Grammar SchoolOn Tuesday morning Ken will meet with Deputy Principal Roger Bayley and the Director of Music at Christ Church Grammar to discuss a date and details for a fundraising concert with Rik Symons.

RYPENForms from the District Committee have come out seeking young people between the ages of 14-17 for the annual Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment camp which will take place at the end of May.

Christ Church Grammar and MLC will be approached by the RCFWB to see if they have students interested in participating whom the Club might sponsor.   Cost is $210 per student.

District President’s MeetingOn Tuesday evening Pres. Di will attend the District President’s meeting and will promote the Magnifying Microscope project to other Club Presidents.   Dir. Rob would like to see the project supported by just one or two other clubs at this time, moving into all schools on a gradual basis.

English Scholarships for NormandyRtn. Warren Milner has generously made available three scholarships for youths between the ages of 18-30 in D. 1640, where our next

Group Study Exchange will take place.  He is keen to strengthen the links between Australia and Normandy which began with the World Wars and now is being furthered with this GSE.  Communication has already been established with the District and they are immediately starting to work on promoting the scholarships to clubs in Normandy.  A fine example of the Rotary Foundation’s aims of ‘Building Bridges of Friendship throughout the World’ AND p r o m o t i n g W o r l d Understanding and Peace.   A great initiative from a former GSE Team member...thank you Warren.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 33: Ever wonder how your Rotary club and district can make a positive impact for peace, right now?

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how your club and district can support the Rotary Peace

and Conflict Studies Program – a professional development p r o g r a m t h a t i s strengthening the leaders of today for peace.

Beyond supporting the program financially, clubs and districts can actively recruit qualified applicants for each bi-annual program session.

Each district can submit as many candidates for each program session as they deem qualified. As one alumnus recently put it, “The program has been nothing short of fantastic. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Give Peace a fighting chance by opening the door for candidates in your District.
