Anne is working her heart out almost without encouragement or assistance, endeavouring to help the indigenous students in her school. Ken has given her contact details for local Rotary clubs in the vicinity of Swan View Senior High and we sincerely hope her tireless efforts bear fruit. With the change of meeting night to a Wednesday, we still seem to be struggling to improve our attendance. We have many members away, some tied up with work and sadly some members suffered severe property damage due to the mighty storm which swept across Perth on Monday afternoon, preventing their attendance. Our thoughts are with those affected by damage and hope all are able to get property and life back in order very quickly. I continue to encourage all members to put Rotary in your diary as one of your priorities and look forward to seeing more members at meetings on Wednesday afternoons. About fifty percent of Club members have responded to me about our social activity on Saturday, 10 th April. Once again, we have members who are working, travelling and one with a wedding, but would love to have all others participate as it is vital for the members to bond and this can only happen with extra activities outside of regular business meetings. I particularly encourage members who have found it difficult to attend weekly meetings to come along to the social activities otherwise they will never feel part of the Club. The launch of the RCFBs Magnifying Microscope project was successfully carried out on Monday, 22 nd March at the Mt Claremont Primary School. More on this in the bulletin. Its’ a busy time seeking out applicants for RYPEN (Rotary’s Youth Program of Enrichment), distributing the microscopes to the participating schools (Claremont, North Cottesloe and Lesmurdie), at District level we are frantically organising the program for the inbound Group Study Exchange Team on the 10 th April with Freshwater Bay hosting a Group meeting for them on 28 th April, plus of course there is the annual District Conference mid April. I remind all members of RI President John Kenny’s theme ‘The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands’ so please give Ken details of your friends and neighbours whom you think will make fine Rotarians and be able to assist us in carrying out good works in our local and wider world community, and also suggesting worthwhile projects, once again both locally and internationally. Yours in Rotary Service, Di Collins Charter President Condolences From all members of the club to Blaise Johnson and Kerry Harmanis on the loss of Blaise’s father and Claire and Daniel Forsdyke on the loss of Claire’s Gran.

Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Our speaker this week was Anne De Souza who spoke to us about the Indigenous Aviation Training Scheme at Swan View Senior High School. Anne is working her heart out almost without encouragement or assistance, endeavouring to help the indigenous students in her school. Ken has given her contact details for local Rotary clubs in the vicinity of Swan View Senior High and

we sincerely hope her tireless efforts bear fruit.

With the change of meeting night to a Wednesday, we still seem to be struggling to improve our attendance. We have many members away, some tied up with work and sadly some members suffered severe property damage due to the mighty storm which swept across Perth on M o n d a y a f t e r n o o n , preventing their attendance. Our thoughts are with those affected by damage and hope all are able to get property and life back in order very quickly. I continue to encourage all members to put Rotary in your diary as one

of your priorities and look forward to seeing more members at meetings on Wednesday afternoons.

About fifty percent of Club members have responded to me about our social activity on Saturday, 10th April. Once again, we have members who are working, travelling and one with a wedding, but would love to have all others participate as it is vital for the members to bond and this can only happen with extra activities outside of regular business meetings. I particularly encourage members who have found it difficult to attend weekly meetings to come along to

the social activities otherwise they will never feel part of the Club.

The launch of the RCFBs Magnifying Microscope project was successfully carried out on Monday, 22nd March at the Mt Claremont Primary School. More on this in the bulletin.

Its’ a busy time s e e k i n g o u t applicants for RYPEN (Rotary’s Youth Program of E n r i c h m e n t ) , distributing the

microscopes to the part ic ipat ing schools (Claremont, North Cottesloe and Lesmurdie), at District level we are frantically organising the program for the inbound Group Study Exchange Team on the 10th April with Freshwater Bay hosting a Group meeting for them on 28th April, plus of course there is the annual District Conference mid April.

Director RequiredThere is still a vacancy on the Board for 2010-11 for Community Service Director.  We need a volunteer please.

District AssemblyPE Simone will keep the incoming Board informed about the District Assembly, which will be in the morning of Sunday, 2nd May.

Charitable Licence RenewalThe Charitable Licence for the RC of Freshwater Bay has been renewed for a further three years.  Come 1st of July the new President and Treasurer will be required to complete the necessary paperwork as Principal Executive Officers of the Club in line with the requirements of the Commission.   Pres. Di who will take on Secretary of the club is already listed therefore is not required to resubmit paperwork.

Inbound GSE Team Meeting 28th AprilThe Rotary Clubs of Cambridge, Dalkeith and Matilda Bay have been invited to join us for this meeting.   No feedback has been received from these clubs as yet.   The Hon. French Consul Michael Wood will attend and we are planning to have pizzas and drinks at 7.00pm after the meeting instead of our usual drinks cheese/fruit and biscuits beforehand.   Please bring partners and friends along to hear our team from Normandy.

Magnifying Microscope LaunchThis was most successful with the microscopes and Teacher’s booklets well received.   Dir. Rob capably MCed the event, Headmaster of Mt Claremont Primary Neil Wood welcomed everyone and brief presentations were made by WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley, Roy Hallam, Strategy Manager Education, Watercorp, John Clarke CEO of Science Teachers Association of WA and Pres. Di who presented the microscopes to the two school captains on behalf of the RC of FB.

Attendees at the launch were representat ives f rom Lesmurdie and Coolbinia Primary Schools, DG Geoff Simpson, DGE Ian and Jan Hutton, Presidents and Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Kalamunda, Northbridge, Karrinyup and Osborne Park, all of whom are keen to run with the project with their local schools.

The message from HE Dr Ken Michael, Governor of WA was printed on the inside cover of the Program for all to see and positive feedback has come from the Chief Scientist, STAWA and attending Rotary Clubs.

A photographer from the Post was also in attendance and if one looks very carefully at this week’s edition an article can be found but one wonders  what happened to any photographs that the journalist may have taken as they were not there to draws attention to a great project.

Chief Scientist Lyn expressed delight to Pres. Di at how quickly and professionally the project has come about.  All concerned can be well pleased.   A fantastic project

and achievement by the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay.

Letter from the Chief ScientistDear Di and everyone at Freshwater Bay Rotary

Thank you Di and Rob for your emails last week and memorable photos. I emailed His Excellency last week to tell him how wonderful the event was and thank him for his much appreciated message; I also included some photos.

I write now to thank you all so much for your leadership role in the program to provide microscopes to Primary Schools in WA. It was a wonderful launch last Monday and one of which you all should be very proud.

Your cooperative and inclusive approach to work with the Science Teachers of WA (STAWA) and the WaterWise Program of the Water Corporation have been most professional and has ensured the pilot program has begun so smoothly. I will certainly describe the program in the most positive terms in my speech to the District 9 4 5 0 Conference of Rotary on April 17th.

I cannot thank you enough f o r y o u r vision and leadership.

With all best wishes and please enjoy the attached photos.

Fundraising Concert at CCGSKen met and spoke with Dep. Principal at CCGS Roger Bayley in mid February about a fundraising concert which was a suggestion put forward by Rik Symons.   Unfortunately, the VP did not liaise with Rik (as he said he would) re a suitable date for the concert and now Rik finds himself too committed for one in the near future.  Let us hope that one can be arranged for later in the year.   We desperately need fundraisers folks, so please put forward suggestions and we also need volunteers to run the fundraisers.

Back in AsiaLyn Packer was home very briefly however has returned to Asia for an indefinite period.   Look forward to hearing what you are doing up there Lyn.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 39: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about PolioPlus Partners.

In 1995, a second sub-program of PolioPlus, the PolioPlus Partners program, was developed to allow Rotarians the opportunity to

directly contribute to polio e r a d i c a t i o n p ro j e c t s submitted by fellow Rotarians in polio-endemic, importation, and high-risk countries.

The Partners program allows Rotarians to choose a project or country that interests them the most by selecting from the PolioPlus Partners Open Projects List available on the polio section of the RI Web

site. Over $48 million has been contributed to over 600 projects since then.

There is still a significant, urgent and ongoing need today.! Please consider giving our fellow Rotarians your support.
