It is seldom a club in Western Australia is privileged to hear a Past President address a club. Glen is our last Australian to serve in this capacity and we had to ‘coax’ him out of ‘retirement’ to travel to Perth for the RC Belmont’s 50 th Anniversary, so naturally we couldn’t miss the opportunity of asking him to speak at the RC Freshwater Bay. ‘Show Rotary Cares’ was Glen’s Theme and his emphasis was to build low cost shelters for people who’d never had a home, lived on streets, in rubbish dumps, under bridges and so on. Over 4,000 were built worldwide in his year as President (they are still being built) and Ken, as a Rotary Foundation Trustee, worked closely with RIP Nominee Kalyan Banerjee (from India) and the District Governors throughout Australia to bring 32 Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and around 800 low cost shelters to fruition to support the thrust of our ‘Caring’ President Glen. As well as the Low Cost Shelters, Glen’s other emphasis were Poverty, Hunger, Numeracy and Literacy. Those present heard a tiny amount of the personal cost in time, energy and dedication that it takes to lead an organisation such as Rotary. Ken and I were privileged to closely share the year Glen was our President as Ken was serving as a Rotary Foundation Trustee, so we know only too well the physical toll it took on him as well as the mighty job he did, as indeed all of our Australian Presidents have done, to make a significant impact on the less fortunate in our world. Sadly, just five weeks after handing over as RI President, Glen’s wife Heather suffered a heart attack and after surgery, a further cardiac arrest, and living in a coma for some weeks, passed away in the October, so they were never able to look back together and survey the journey they’d been on and bask in the fruits of their labour. Thank you PRIP Glen for gracing us with your presence and I know Photo: (L-R): PRIP Glen Kinross, PE Simone Carot Collins, Marcos Carot Collins

Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Members from the Rotary Clubs of Cambridge, Hillarys and Mosman Park, together with our own members and guests totalled 60 to hear a firsthand account from Past Rotary In terna t iona l President Glen Kinross on his personal story of serving as

President of Rotary in 1997-98. It is seldom a club in Western Australia is privileged to hear a Past President address a club. Glen is our last Australian to serve in this capacity and we had to ‘coax’ him out of ‘retirement’ to travel to Perth for the RC Belmont’s 50th Anniversary, so naturally we couldn’t miss the opportunity of asking him to speak at the RC Freshwater Bay.

‘Show Rotary Cares’ was Glen’s Theme and his emphasis was to build low cost shelters for people who’d never had a home, lived on streets, in rubbish dumps, under bridges and so on. Over 4,000 were built worldwide in his year as President (they are still being built) and Ken, as a Rotary Foundation Trustee, worked closely with RIP Nominee Kalyan Banerjee (from India) and the District Governors throughout Australia to bring

32 Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and around 800 low cost shelters to fruition to support the thrust of our ‘Caring’ President Glen. As well as the Low Cost Shelters, Glen’s other emphasis were Poverty, Hunger, Numeracy and Literacy.

Those present heard a tiny amount of the personal cost in time, energy and dedication that it takes to lead an organisation such as Rotary. The Rotary FoundationWeek 46: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Matching Grants and how one project brought clean water and hope for a better future.

Matching Grants assist Rotary clubs and districts in

carrying out humanitarian projects with clubs in other countries.

A recent Foundation Matching Grant allowed Rotarians in India to provide 36 hand-pump wells to rural villages in Andhra Pradesh state where there is a severe shortage of water.

Access to clean water will improve the quality of life for

those living in these villages by helping to prevent disease and alleviate poverty.

Every Rotarian, every project, and every contribution makes a difference every year.
