Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

An excellent meeting last Thursday, enjoyed by all with our enthusiastic, inspirational speaker Rtn. Prof. Ralph Martins who updated us on his vital work with Alzheimer ’s research. Current Australian of the

Year for WA, Ralph has spent the past 26 years making great inroads into the diagnosis and treatment of a disease which has always been feared and with our ageing population has even more relevance in our present time.

Ralph’s message is very positive as there are now machines which can be used to view images to inform the researches of what is taking

place in the brain thus allowing patients to be better informed . Ralph paid tribute to Warren Milner who has financially supported one of his researchers for several years. With recent grants from the Lotteries Commission and the Government, it is good news for Ralph’s research team, however, with a few more million dollars, time in pinpointing an early

diagnosis for Alzheimer’s could be halved.

Green tea, fish oil tablets and testosterone replacement have all been shown to slow the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease

Last week at the McCusker Alzheimer’s AGM Ralph told me that he had been encouraged to join Rotary for several years by a PDG, however as he was extremely busy, resisted doing so. The PDG eventually wore him down and now Ralph says he could not imagine not being a Rotarian as he finds the work R o t a r y d o e s v e r y inspirational.

Thank you Ralph for giving over one of your precious evenings to address our Club and also for sending us Jen and Hamish as valued members. We are disappointed that Hamish works Wednesday evenings until 9.00pm, and look forward to when he is able to rearrange his work commitments to once again attend meetings. I know he is missing being able to attend. However, he is still contributing and recently sent in $68 that he’d collected in the Pharmacy for Polio Plus in the Rotary money boxes.

A number of visitors joined us to hear Ralph, PDG Ron and Glenys Geary, Paul and Sonya Owen (RC West Perth), Margot Huntsman, John Wetherall, Christine Harrison, Michael O’Hara, Tom and Vickie Nielson, Tony Munday and Sally Lamey. A huge thank you to members for bringing along guests.

Apologies to Donna Bicknell who came along to the launch of the Burundi Peace Choir CD on 1st May, however, I was unaware she was present and overlooked acknowledging her presence. Thanks for coming Donna, have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to your return in June.

I hope we’ll have a strong turnout for our combined dinner meeting next week and for our visit the following week (19th May) to

the kitchen facility at the Maddington Primary School. It will be beneficial for members to personally view the completed project and to see what has been brought to fruition with funds raised.

The Face Behind our BadgesOur long time friend from Launceston, Tasmania, PDG Maurice Hill is the man who makes our club badges and the President’s name which hangs on our lectern.  Maurice is also making a plaque to acknowledge that the equipment for ‘Manna

Kids Health in Eating’ facility has been donated by the RCs of Freshwater Bay and Arden Arcade through a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant. 

Bunnings Claremont Sausage SizzleBunnings Claremont have each weekend (Saturday and or Sundays) available if members of the RC of Freshwater Bay are interested in Ken booking a day (or weekend) to run a Sausage Sizzle.

When discussing fundraising activities, a number of members expressed interest in a Sausage Sizzle. 

Conditions are: Bunnings supply the BBQ and gas.  The

group running the Sausage Sizzle (us) are required to:

Have a minimum of 3 people serving at the sausage sizzle at all times. Three to five is ideal.

Obtain approval from Claremont Town Council (they supply appropriate forms)

Operating hours are between 9.00am and 4.00pm

Menu is only to be sausage in bread roll with onion and condiments

Maximum selling price is $2.50

Soft drinks and water may also be sold

F e e d b a c k f r o m members is required as to whether we proceed with this, suggested date/s and volunteers. 

Storage at Bethesda Hospital for Club PropertyBryant Stokes has arranged for us to have the use of a locked cupboard to store the club property.  It has been an ordeal struggling in each week with the box of property, screen, projector, extension cord, pull up banner and wines. 

The cupboard will make a world of difference.   A huge thank you Bryant. 

WAAPA ConcertThanks to Peter Symons $50 will go into our Charity account for Peter, Mandy, Margaret, Ken, Di and friends of the Symons attendance on Thursday night of a most enjoyable Baroque Concert. 

Visit to Maddington Primary 19th May – Manna Kids Health in Eating FacilityPlease put 6.00pm at Maddington Primary School, Albany Hwy, Maddington in your diary to inspect the facility funded by the RCs of Freshwater Bay and Arden Arcade.Finger food will be provided.  We’d like to give Bev Lowe an indication of the number attending so please RSVP to Ken so he can pass the information on.

Article in Western Suburbs WeeklyAn article ‘Boxes of books bound for India’ together with a photograph of students from MLC was published in this week’s Western Suburbs Weekly. 

Rajah has spoken with PDG Ron Geary who sends containers of goods to an AIDS Orphanage which he supports in Visakhapatnam, India, and Ron will include cartons of books in his next container.  They will then need to be transported to Madurai.  Besides the books collected by MLC, supplies have been deposited at the Nedlands Library.   Rajah and Jes are working hard with this project.  Very well done to both of you. 

Burundi Peace Choir CDsThese are available at a cost of $20 each.  Consider purchasing these as gifts.   Instead of taking chocolates for the hostess when you visit friends for dinner, consider giving a CD.     When traveling and visiting friends, once again, think of giving the gift of one of the Burundi Peace Choir’s CDs which will help this

group to help themselves  plus they are easy to pack. 

Normandy Team Returns HomeSaturday, 8th May saw the farewell luncheon for the Group Study Exchange Team from Normandy, who departed that evening for home.   Our outbound Team will depart on 16th May for D. 1640 in Normandy and we wish all of them

a very successful trip. 

Knitted items for WilunaAllan Stewart took two bags of beanies and scarves with him to Wiluna last Monday morning and within hours another two bags were delivered to the Collins’ garage.   The knitted items in football colours  will be

very popular with the indigenous children.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 45: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Matching Grants.

Rotary clubs in Honduras and Pennsylvania, USA partnered together to receive a Matching Grant to provide

eye and vision care to needy people in Honduras.

During a 10-day long mission, Rotarians from both clubs worked to provide a wide variety of vision services through clinics held at local schools and neighborhoods.

Over 1,200 individuals were evaluated and 600 received prescription eyeglasses. A

local non-governmental organization will continue to provide eyeglasses and medications to those in need.

Improved eyesight can translate into improved educational or occupational opportunities, contributing greatly to improved quality of life.

To be a Rotarian means to give of our time, talent and

financial resources. Will you make that sacrifice so others may have a better life.
