Wednesday last Rob, Rajah, Warren, Elizabeth, Claire, Margaret, Daniel, Simone, Ken and I went out to the Manna ‘Healthy Eating for Kids Facility’ at Maddington Primary School to see the end result of our Matching Grant project in conjunction with the RC Arden Arcade, California. It is a fine project which will benefit many, as Bev Lowe (Manna Ind) so capably described to all present. The Lowes are doing a remarkable job, not only here in this facility, but in some 13 schools, clothing children, feeding the homeless and so on. A magnificent example of what one (in this instance two) very ordinary people can do. They have impacted on and improved the lives of countless needy in our own society. With our Welfare system it seems incredible to learn of the huge needs in so many areas around our metropolitan area. Some 70% of the children requiring Manna’s help are indigenous and others are newly arrived refugees. It takes around $200,000 per year for the Lowes to run their Charity. Bev seeks funds from businesses, unions, Churches and other groups to keep their work going. Bless you and your army of volunteers for your hard work and kind hearts Bev and John. There is still six weeks until the end of the Rotary year, however, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank members for what everyone has contributed in this first 18 months to successfully launch the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay. What has been achieved, particularly with such a small amount of funds, has been remarkable. The projects undertaken you can all be justly proud of as many, many well established clubs are not involved with as significant projects as we have already brought to fruition. Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

This will be my final letter for the weekly Bulletin as Ken and I leave for North America this weekend, returning in time for Changeover, where we look forward to seeing you, your

family and friends. Please strongly support this function to welcome in our new President and Board for 2010-11.

Wednesday last Rob, Rajah, Warren, Elizabeth, Claire, Margaret, Daniel, Simone, Ken and I went out to the Manna ‘Healthy Eating for Kids Facility’ at Maddington Primary School to see the end result of our Matching Grant

project in conjunction with the RC Arden Arcade, California. It is a fine project which will benefit many, as Bev Lowe (Manna Ind) so capably described to all present. The Lowes are doing a remarkable job, not only here in this facility, but in some 13 schools, clothing children, feeding the homeless and so on. A magnificent example of what one (in this instance two)

very ordinary people can do. They have impacted on and improved the lives of countless needy in our own society.

With our Welfare system it seems incredible to learn of the huge needs in so many a re a s a ro u n d o u r metropolitan area.

International, Community, Youth and Vocational. We’ve managed to do a little of everything, including having a number of outstanding speakers for our weekly programs (as well as learning a little more about a number of our own members in ‘life and time’ spots), sponsor and host the GSE Team plus a combined meeting to hear PRIP Glen Kinross. We’ve embarked on minor fundraisers plus enjoyed social events to enable everyone to get to know each other a little better as 18 months ago most were strangers to each other.

To all Rotarians and spouses who have supported the club and to members of the Board, who have shouldered most of the work, I extend my heartfelt thanks as we know how busy life is for everyone in the 21st century. Whilst many have worked away quietly there are a few in particular who have worked tirelessly to put the club on a sound footing . I know it is dangerous to mention names but members owe an enormous amount of gratitude to our Treasurer Rajah, Sec/Bulletin Ed. Daniel, Director Claire, PE Simone, PRID Ken and the person who came along at the right moment and saved me from drowning, Rob. Despite working full time Rob stepped in and took over the Projects Committee, has been at meetings to do with many projects at very short notice, has fetched, carried and transported things from keyboards to our property cabinet.

We need to continue to work on Attendance and Membership, however, have a strong, core of committed, supportive and reliable members. The Club could not function without you. Each is valued and Bless each of you for all you have done and continue to do. From experience, the more you put into the work of Rotary, the more fulfilled you will be and the more you will get out of being a Rotarian

although much cannot be measured in a tangible way.

I thank you for affording me the privilege of serving as your Charter President.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

Sausage SizzleBunnings Claremont has been booked for our Club to run a Sausage Sizzle on Saturday, 28th August. We have a few volunteers, however, need more so anyone who is able to assist, please mark the date in your diary and currently it is PE Simone who will be keeping a list of volunteers.  Once she takes over as President it will be our new PE Bill Hassell who will take over the list.

Vocational Visit to Linney’sAnother date for your diary is Wednesday, 7th July, which is also the birthday of our President Simone.   First meeting for the new Rotary year will be a visit to Linney’s in Rokeby Rd, Subiaco.   This will replace our regular meeting at the Cafe at Bethesda Hospital.  Once a month Linney’s put on a very professional evening of drinks and nibbles, gift bags and a ‘door prize’ for groups. It is a change of pace to our regular meetings where we can all learn more about the pink diamond industry.    Spouses and family can be invited however, Linney’s will need numbers a week prior to the night.  More information will be provided by Director Rob.

RYDARotary Youth Driver Awareness will be conducted on 23rd June at Lathlain Park Oval.   The RCFB will be joining with the RC Matilda Bay to run the event.   The

school we will be sponsoring is Newman College.   Clive Boddy is looking after this with assistance from Bronwen Tyson.   Several other volunteers will be required on the day.   If you can assist for part or all of the day, please contact Clive.

Project support and the Rotary LogoAt the Board meeting Friday, 21st May, it was agreed the RCFB would only support projects which recognise the support given to it by Rotary by displaying the Rotary Logo.

It was moved by Dir. Rob Rohrlach that “The RCFB only supports projects that are willing to carry the RI Wheel logo forever in acknowledgement of the support RI has given.”

Many Rotary clubs are cash cows for other organisations hopes and dreams and we do not want to go down that track in this club, but rather put the Rotary stamp on projects supported by RCFB.

Welcome New MemberOur new member Michael O’Hara will be inducted in the next week or two.   As Membership Director Ken will be overseas, PE Simone will organise Michael’s induction.

Welcome Michael, we are delighted you are joining us. Michael’s Classification is Medical Equipment – Wholesale.

Good Wishes and a Speedy RecoveryOur Bulletin Ed. will be spending the day in hospital

next Wednesday so he and Claire will be missed at our meeting next week.   A full and speedy recovery to you Daniel from all members.

District ChangeoverThere will be a joint District Changeover Dinner to welcome in the two new District Governors, Ian Hutton D. 9455 and Marilyn Barton D.9465.   Because of the realignment of the Districts (reducing from 3 to 2) a joint Changeover has been organised.   Any members interested in joining the Collins’ and Carot Collins’ at this function are encouraged to do so.    Date: Saturday, 3rd July, South Perth Yacht Club, 6.00pm for 6.30pm.  Cost $45 per person.

WilunaAlan Stewart has taken another two bags of knitted items of rugs, scarves and beanies to Wiluna for the indigenous community as the nights are now cool in that part of the state.

Presidential Citation for 2010-11The Presidential Citation for the coming Rotary year has been made more challenging, however, with a well balanced Rotary program in a   club it is very achievable.  The Board agreed that the various committees would work with the criteria provided towards achieving a Citation.

Attendance at MeetingsWith so many members currently overseas and / or w o r k i n g We d n e s d a y evenings, would members please give every priority to

attending meetings of a Wednesday evening.   Around a third of the club is currently overseas and another few members are having difficulty attending due to work commitments.  There are many excellent speakers in place and your commitment and support is sought to make the meetings successful.

ShelterBox Scoops Top Prize at Cornwall Business AwardsFriday 21 May 2010

ShelterBox has been named Best Social Enterprise in Cornwall at the 2010 Cornwall Business Awards.

Organised and presented by Cornwall Development Company, in partnership with the South West of England Regional Development Agency and Business Link, the award ceremony took place at St

Mellion International Resort on Thursday, May 20.

ShelterBox was nominated and shortlisted, along with Fifteen Cornwall and the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), for the Best Social Enterprise award, sponsored by the Eden Project.

ShelterBox Communications Officer, Tommy Tonkins, who was on hand to collect the award said it was a shock to hear ShelterBox’s name read out as the winner.

‘I genuinely couldn’t believe it,’ said Tommy. ‘We were up against really tough competition; the work that RIO and Fifteen do is incredible and both of them would’ve been fully deserving winners.

‘It’s fantastic to receive this recognition from the business community in Cornwall, who are some of our strongest supporters. It’s a fitting tribute to all the hard work that goes into ShelterBox from staff, volunteers and supporters the world over.’

Tom Henderson, ShelterBox Founder and CEO, added:

‘This year m a r k s ShelterBox’s t e n y e a r anniversary and the global awareness of who we are and what we do has never been higher.

'But Cornwall is ShelterBox’s home and without the support, dedication and passion of the Cornish people we would never have reached the international stage.

‘To win this award is a fantastic honour for ShelterBox but it’s an honour that belongs to our supporters and to the people of Cornwall.’

Daphne Skinnard, from BBC Radio Cornwall, was announcing the awards while top business woman and Apprentice TV star, Karen Brady, was handing out the prizes.

ShelterBox would like to extend its thanks to the organisers and sponsors of the Awards and a say a massive congratulations to all the shortlisted business and winners on the night.

Trustees Significantly Restore Matching Grants World Fund Budget Rotary International News 18 May 2010

At their April meeting, The Rotary Foundation Trustees approved a Matching Grants World Fund budget of US$21.5 million for 2010-11. This amount represents an 82 percent increase over the previous year’s budget of $11.8 million and, because funds for the 100 Future Vision pilot districts were budgeted separately, one of the largest World Fund budgets in Matching Grants history. The Trustees approved a Rotary Foundation Global Grants World Fund budget of $8 million for Future Vision pilot districts starting with the 2010-11 program year.

Although the 2010-11 Foundation programs budget is pending final approval by the RI Board of Directors in June, we want to reassure Rotarians that we do not anticipate the Matching Grant budget being fully committed early in the Rotary year. The

Trustees plan to review Competitive Matching Grant applications at their October 2010 and April 2011 meetings; the Foundation will notify districts if this business cycle changes.

The Trustees were able to restore World Fund budget for Matching Grants largely because Rotarians and other friends of Rotary donated a record amount of almost $115 million to the Annual Programs Fund in 2007-08 (World Fund allocations are based on Annual Programs Fund donations three years prior). Additionally, because investment income stabilized, the Trustees did not need to use a significant amount of World Fund to supplement the Foundation’s programs operations budget for the coming year.

If you have questions about Matching Grants and the 2010-11 program year budget, please e-mail them to [email protected].

The Rotary FoundationWeek 47: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the Permanent Fund.

When reflecting on our personal estates and the legacy we want to leave, have we thought about how

much we can afford to give away?

Trustee Louis Piconi shares these inspiring remarks: “Rotarians of today are leaving a legacy to the children of the world when we, Rotary, join our world partners in the celebration of the certification of the eradication of polio from the world. More importantly, and I do mean more

importantly, is the fact that the Rotarians of today and tomorrow have the opportunity to leave their own legacy of ‘doing good in the world’ for future e d u c a t i o n a l a n d humanitarian service programs. Do we dare dream that Rotarians of today not only make it a habit of making an annual contribution each and every year, but leave a percentage

of their estate or a one-time significant gift to The Rotary Foundation’s Permanent Fund? This should be the dream, goal and reality of all Rotarians. We need just look and see and feel and touch the wonderful programs and projects we are continually completing that help the world know a more humane society and a more peaceful world.”
