Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Colin Garber visited the club last Thursday, along with Lakshmi Krishnan who had read the article in the Post newspaper, sent in by Rajah on the books project. Lakshmi phoned Ken and said she would like to make a cash donation to the books project and also to another project in India, which she has done. A water filtration

project will be happening in two schools in Madurai. Good work Rajah.

Rod Style was our speaker on RYDA. I’m sure all members present agree it is an excellent project and one we should become involved with. Newman College is the first school we will work with and this could very well come to fruition in June. Clive Boddy has agreed to look after the project and Bronwen Tyson will also assist, however, more volunteers will be required on the day. Unfortunately, June is a time

when Ken and I will be unavailable to help as we will be in the USA and Canada attending the R o t a r y Convention.

Thursday, 14th April, Ken, R a j a h , M a r g a r e t Stuart, Bill and Sue Hassell and I attended the Charter Breakfast of the new Rotary C l u b o f Crawley. There w e r e 2 4 0 people in attendance at the University

C l u b , including HE the Governor, D r . K e n Michael and Lord Mayor Lisa Scafidi. The Charter was presented by DG Geoff Simpson to C h a r t e r President Jaap Poll, at which time fireworks went off. A brief video was played of RI President John Kenny wishing the new Club well. with a number of so called ‘traditions’, however, they cut back to the bone so much that none of us had any idea who the members of the new club were as there were no introductions, list of Charter members, etc.

On Monday, 19th April, it is the birthday of the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, who was born in 1868, in Racine, Wisconsin. On a cold winter’s day on 23rd February, 1905, when he invited three of his friends to join him for lunch in Chicago, I’m sure he never envisaged the mighty International organisation that Rotary has evolved to today. Rotary has made a significant impact on the world and truly has the power to be a mighty force in creating peace and bringing about world understanding. Just look at the programs of the Rotary Foundation. Every one of them is geared toward education, improving health, uplifting the downtrodden and building bridges of friendship around the world. We should all feel very proud to be Rotarians and to be a part of changing people’s lives.

Our Australian Past world President who has been in the media in recent weeks will also celebrate a birthday on Monday 19th April. Sir Clem Renouf will be 89 and he single handedly changed the face of Rotary from clubs looking inwardly at small projects in their own communities to looking globally at large projects through what he termed 3H - Health, Hunger and Humanity projects. All projects too large for an individual club to tackle could be brought to fruition with the aid of funds from the Rotary Foundation Projects up to US500,000.00 were funded. Sadly, with the recent changes to the Rotary Foundation, 3 H Grants have been dissolved. Clem also was the Godfather behind PolioPlus. What an impact two men can make and they share the same birth date.

This weekend a number of us will be attending the District Conference. WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley will be one of the Keynote Speakers and she told us that she will be promoting our Magnifying Microscope project. A fantastic project in our first full year of Service.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

Manna Industries ‘Kid’s Kitchen’ ProjectThe opening is scheduled for Wednesday, 21st April at 2.30 pm at Maddington Primary School.

A card to Pres. Di from Bev and John Lowe reads ‘words cannot express our thanks for the contribution that yourselves and your club have made to Maddington school’.

Arrangements have been made for the Club to visit the ‘Kid’s Kitchen’ Project at Maddington Primary School, 1951 Albany Hwy, Maddington on Wednesday, 19th May, 2010 at 6.00pm in place of our regular Committee meetings.  We can organise for Pizzas or something similar to eat after we’ve had a tour of inspection of the project and learnt of the work that is being carried out there by Manna.   We will require pretty firm numbers before this visit so please put the date in your diary, along with all the other very important happenings in the club in the coming months. Once again, all partners are welcome.

Club AssemblyA Club Assembly has been scheduled for 26th May.

Happy New YearThe Hindu (Tamil) New Year was Thursday, 14th April.   A very Happy New Year to Rajah and Jes.

Traveling RotariansCurrently overseas we have Jane Armstrong, Clive Boddy, Debbie Cash, Br. James, Toni James, Blaise Johnson and Peter Symons.

Safe travels folks.   Look forward to seeing each of you on your return.

Club FoundationPres. Kerry McAuliffe is reviewing this for us as it seems to be going on and on.  Apparently the ATO have requested changes which Kerry is looking into.   The Solicitor who is overseeing the application is on holiday until 27th April and the time line she has provided shows that it will be the end of July at the earliest before we have a positive result.

Congratulations Elizabeth and GraemeElizabeth won a pass to the Fairbridge Festival last weekend so she and Graeme were unable to join us for our social evening last Saturday night.   Earlier in the year they also received recognition for their EmbroidMe business and this will result in a trip to the USA for the Bains.

Congratulations on both counts!

Waist Disposal ChallengeApparently we are 6th on the list which Simone says is very good.

Weigh in is next Wednesday 21st April.  It’s not too late to join in so other members please see Simone or Daniel.

Congratulations to Daniel, Simone and RC Freshwater BayThis weekend members Rob, Elizabeth, Rajah, Claire, Daniel, Sue, Bill, Simone, Ken and Di   attended the last District Conference for D. 9450.    Our Director Elect Stuart and Adrienne Heal from New Zealand were the  Personal representatives of RI President John and June Kenny at the Conference and Stuart did his job well.   The RC of West Perth did a professional job in organising the Conference.

District Awards were reduced this year however, the RC of Freshwater Bay came away with two of the handful of awards.  The first was the District Bulletin Award.  We knew it was the best bulletin in the District, now the rest of the District know also.   The second Award was for the best article in the Rotary Down Under Magazine from a Club in the District.  This went to an article on ‘Facebook’ by Simone.   Heartfelt congratulations to our fantastic Bulletin Ed. Daniel and PE Simone.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 42: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is an update on polio eradication efforts in 2007.

2007 saw the continued use of new tools and the development of new tactics that led to a reduction of

polio cases and stopped the circulation of imported polio virus in 22 re-infected countries

There are new commitments from country leaders and a new Case for Completing Polio Eradication, but the Global Polio Eradication Initiative faces a significant funding gap.

We need Rotarians’ ongoing commitment or else polio eradication will not occur. Your support is vital in finishing the job!

Our gift to the world will be Polio Eradication!
