Bring it all Home 2014 is a celebration of the life, music and legacy of Paisley's Gerry Rafferty, taking in a series of shows around the town (11 to 19 April) and an exhibition on his life at Paisley Museum (7 March to 18 May). The series of celebratory shows get underway tonight (Friday 11 April) when there's an International Concert featuring Ireland's Paul Brady and Louisiana native Mary Gauthier who showcase their talent in the unique setting of Paisley Abbey. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets costing £20 can be bought at: https://boxoffice.renfrewshire.gov.uk/peo/show.asp Paul Brady, a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, is one of Ireland's most enduringly popular artists and Mary Gauthier (pronounced Go-Shay) is a Louisiana native turned Nashville resident whose songs have earned praise from Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, and been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Blake Shelton, Boy George and many others.

Paul Brady crosses musical boundaries with ease, defying genre by incorporating folk, rock, blues and traditional Irish and classic pop styles. He has played with a number of major bands, including traditional folk bands The Johnstons and Planxty, and has also had a hugely successful solo career. His songs have been covered by international stars including Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt and Tina Turner. Paul continues to push out the boundaries not only of his own talent, but of Irish contemporary music in the new millennium. Mary Gauthier's six studio albums have received countless accolades – 2005’s 'Mercy Now' earned her the Americana Music Association’s New/Emerging Artist of the Year title, and 2011’s The Foundling was named the No. 3 Record of the Year by the LA Times. Her songs have been described as carrying ‘so much emotional punch, they can leave you staggering’ and she arrives in Paisley having just released her first-ever live album, Live at Blue Rock. www.bringitallhome.co.uk https://twitter.com/BIAHFestival www.facebook.com/BringItAllHome

An array of top Scottish roots acts have pledged their support to The Soundhouse Organisation, the recently-founded charity campaigning for a new music venue in Edinburgh – and will soon be putting their money where their mouth is, by playing three fundraiser gigs for the project. Folk-fusion pioneers Shooglenifty, sassy vocal combo The Bevvy Sisters, local Americana hero Dean Owens, rising star Adam Holmes and underground favourite DJ Dolphin Boy all feature among the line-ups this spring/summer at Edinburgh’s Pleasance Theatre, with other hand-picked acts including Blueflint, Banjo Lounge 4, The Pygmies, Lord Rochester and Cera Impala. The Soundhouse Organisation evolved from the successful house concerts staged since 2002 by photographer Douglas Robertson, which have proved the demand among musicians and fans for a conducive, well-appointed venue in the capital, especially following the successive closure of several such spaces since the 1990s. Its goal is a venue that offers a fair deal to musicians, and a warm welcome to audiences of all ages, together with rehearsal space and educational activity, thereby creating a focal point for Edinburgh’s live music community. The forthcoming concerts launch a major fundraising drive to support these goals. Each night features at least four acts, with performances in the Pleasance bar both before and after the main theatre shows. Tickets are £10, and all proceeds go to the Soundhouse cause. “Edinburgh is a uniquely creative city, partly due to the annual Festival influx, yet for the rest of the year it as good as gets culturally kicked in the teeth by its own,” says Heather Macleod, of The Bevvy Sisters. “Too many fantastic venues have been axed, while amazing spaces lie rotting and disused. To enable growth from its uniquely diverse music scene, Edinburgh desperately needs a small to mid- sized venue, with a similar feel to Douglas’s house gigs, which can sustainably support this grassroots activity alongside world-renowned acts.” www.soundhouse.org.uk https://twitter.com/soundhouseorg

One of the most significant and successful concerts staged by Runrig, to mark the band’s 40th anniversary, has been recaptured on DVD. The Gaelic rock legends staged the massive gig at Muir of Ord near Inverness last August to celebrate the remarkable journey from island dance band to international phenomenon. Party on the Moor became the ultimate Runrig concert, a never-to-be-repeated distillation of their music and all they have represented over four extraordinary decades. Muir of Ord had never before been used as a music venue but it fitted the requirements perfectly. The ambitious production attracted devoted fans from all corners of the world and featured ex-band members as guest performers in an emotional night of musical magic that will live long in the memory. Party on the Moor is now available on DVD, Blu Ray and as a three-disc audio CD. For the band’s members, past and present, Rory Macdonald, Brian Hurren, Donnie Munro, Calum Macdonald, Malcolm Jones, Bruce Guthro, Pete Wishart and Iain Bayne, the anniversary concert was a unique and emotional occasion. Rory Macdonald said: “It was a magical live experience unlike no other I can remember: the weather came good, the show worked, the genuine goodwill from everyone was palpable; from the audience, the supports, the staff, the crew, all creating this positive force of togetherness and a potent marking of the milestone.“ His brother and fellow band founder, Calum, added: ‘’It was so long in the planning, in the heart and in the mind. A real, significant milestone for us all. You remember the big shows and the significant concerts, but this one seemed to be an event that superseded all the others and certainly superseded the duration of the actual show. The three hours of the concert went past like three minutes and the forty years passed like a dream.’’ The concert brought together former frontman Donnie Munro and current singer Bruce Guthro on stage for the first time. Donnie said: ’’To celebrate 40 years of making music is quite an achievement in its

own right and to do it with the support and generosity of so many people who have supported the band over many years is a privilege one has no right to expect. Coming on stage at Muir of Ord was therefore a very special and moving moment both personally and as a part of the band over so many years.” And Bruce said: “There is a sense of family within this band that extends beyond its inner circle, it manages to stay together and offer something that is unique. The ship isn't as streamlined, fit, and young as it once was, but there is an integrity, honesty and resilience to it that drives it forward.... even after 40 years.” The two frontmen singing together was a highlight for many, including Malcolm Jones: “Munro and Guthro – a great moment. Long set? – doesn’t feel like it .Who could ask for a better audience? Job done, in style, a fitting concert to mark the occasion. Did I mention the rain? Came there none.’’ Brian Hurren said the whole event had a real sense of celebration: “It became crystal clear, that celebrating the bands 40th anniversary was just as much about what Runrig meant to everyone there, as the anniversary itself. Now, that was special” Iain Bayne also paid tribute to the band’s loyal fans: “It was an emotional day and still hard for me to understand. Not many bands have the pleasure and privilege to be playing concerts after so many years, and it's a testimony to a very special audience who still stand there with us.”

The Kelburn Garden Party are launching their 2014 season of events on 13 April with a performance from hotly-tipped UK-Mali collaborative project Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate. Support comes from Woven Tents. The gig takes place at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, with doors at 7pm. Tickets available from Ripping Records and at www.kelburngardenparty.com The well-worn and often overblown expression "music is a common language" has never been more apropos in the case of Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate. US-born, England-based Driscoll speaks no French and Kouyate, who hails from the West African country of Guinea, little English. When they were brought together at the Nuit Metis (Mixed Night) festival in Marseille, France in 2010 and given a week to produce a concert, music was the only way they could communicate. It turns out, they had a lot to "talk" about, and their first meeting sparked a collaboration that led to the formation of a band, the recording of an album, over 120 concert dates across Europe and rave reviews. Driscoll contributes the rapping, looping, beatboxing and songwriting talents he developed growing up in Syracuse, New York and during his own successful recording career. Kouyate, already a phenomenon in African music circles, has blown minds and ears with his hypersonic electrified riffs on the kora, bringing the exalted West African harp into the 21st Century with use of distortion peddles, effects and previously-unimagined technical prowess. Together, Driscoll and Kouyate blend hip-hop, spoken word, funk, and soulful, accessible rock with Afrobeat, reggae and irrepressible African grooves. http://joeandsekou.com/ http://woventents.bandcamp.com/ www.kelburngardenparty.com

Button Up single : download Release Date: Out Now

The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle.

CEILIDHCATU

NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name.
