This year Tennent’s Lager celebrate a landmark 20 years of their grassroots music initiative, T Break. T Break began in 1996, searching for Scotland’s freshest unsigned musical talent and has been giving acts the chance to play the biggest platform for unsigned music at T in the Park - the T Break Stage - ever since. Throughout T Break’s 20 year history, the T Break Stage has seen performances from the likes of Biffy Clyro, Snow Patrol, Paolo Nutini, Twin Atlantic and The View and entries are now open for the next 16 unsigned acts set to play the T Break Stage this summer, in the stage’s first year at T in the Park’s new home, Strathallan Castle. The judging panel, consisting of 15 of Scotland’s most influential music industry experts including: artists, promoters, bookers, managers and members of the media, will then listen to every demo before handpicking the 16 acts to play the T Break Stage at T in the Park on 10-12 July. This year Tennent’s Lager are delighted to welcome two new faces to the judging panel: Louie, Hector Bizerk front man and previous T Break artist and Aimmi Dunsmuir manager of hugely successful Glasgow rockers, Twin Atlantic. Both are delighted to be involved saying, Louie, Frontman Hector Bizerk and previous T Break artist: “I'm quite humbled to be invited to offer my opinions on T Break's next wave of emerging talent. I think Scotland is home to some of the most innovative and exciting music in the world and I am excited to listen to all the entries. I have first-hand experience of the buzz that artists get from playing the T Break Stage and I'm really looking forward to sharing that moment with 16 new bands." Aimmi Dunsmuir, Twin Atlantic Manager: "I remember tuning in to the announcements of the T Break finalists on the radio when I was younger and I am honoured be a part of the judging panel for 2015. T Break is such an important platform for the unsigned acts of Scotland. Working with Twin Atlantic who have grown from T Break Stage to headlining the Radio 1 Stage on Saturday at this year’s T in the Park has

me very excited to hear what Scotland's unsigned acts have to offer." Tennent’s Lager passionately believe in supporting Scotland’s grassroots music scene and T Break offers an unrivalled opportunity for acts to showcase their material to industry experts and music fans alike on the biggest platform for emerging talent at T in the Park – the T Break Dave McGeachan, Senior Promoter at DF Concerts and T Break Judge said: “T Break has been an incredible 20 year journey, we’ve seen an amazing amount of talent come through the process over the past twenty years with some bands going on to achieve huge success. The great thing about T Break is, it’s so different every year, music styles change and fashion changes but the freshness and authenticity of Scotland’s unsigned acts remains the same, I can’t wait to hear what this year’s acts have got to offer” T Break is open to musicians of all genres. To get involved entrants must be 18 or over, live in Scotland, and must be currently unsigned – full details on how to submit demos is available on www.facebook.com/TennentsTBreak and www.tennents.com/tbreak and entries must be submitted before the deadline of midnight on Monday 6th April 2015.

The 'Digital Distribution Workshop' takes place on Tuesday 24 March from 6.30pm to 10pm at Kinetic Studios in Oban and will be presented by EmuBands Managing Director, Ally Gray. Ally will be discussing how to distribute your music to leading digital retailers such as iTunes, Spotify and Amazon MP3. Ally is Managing Director and co-founder of EmuBands, as well as a board member of the Scottish Music Industry Association and a music industry mentor for the Music+ project. As well as digital distribution, Ally has experience in concert promotion and artist management, and regularly lectures at colleges and universities on both the music industry in general and digital distribution specifically. Creative Scotland has awarded more than £1.3m through its Open Project Fund to support festivals, research and development, production, national and international touring and the purchase of vital equipment, from December 2014 to January 2015.

61 individuals and projects across the arts, screen and creative industries and based throughout Scotland, received awards of between £1,500 and £100,000.

There are no deadlines attached to Open Project Funding. Applications are reviewed on a weekly basis and decisions provided within 8 weeks for applications less than £15,000 and 12 weeks for applications more than £15,000. This means that individuals and organisations can apply at a time that suits their needs and their practice.

This new funding route, launched in October 2014, reflects Creative Scotland’s commitment to simplification and clarity and replaces multiple funding routes that previously existed. Applicants can apply for funding amounts between £1,000 and £100,000 (or up to £150,000 by exception) for projects lasting up to two years.

Musically Open Project funding has been awarded to several festivals across the country including the Hebridean Celtic Festival, Glasgow International Jazz Festival and East Neuk Festival - other funding has gone to musician and performer Sarah Kenchington, and Glasgow rock band Vasa and Edinburgh band War Charge, have received funding to record and release their albums.

Janet Archer, Chief Executive of Creative Scotland said: “Open Project Funding is one of the three key elements of our new funding approach, delivering the promise of simplicity and clear routes to funding for those we are here to support.

“I’m particularly pleased that we are able to operate the Open Project Fund without deadlines. Demand is high, so we are allocating budgets across the year, which means that both individuals and organisations can apply at a time that suits them. This is something that has been asked for and we are responding accordingly.

“Alongside our Regular and Targeted funding routes, Open Project Funding aims to support work across a broad range of practice and scale and across all parts of Scotland.

Over £1m of these awards has been allocated from National Lottery funds. Alongside funding from the Scottish Government, The National Lottery forms a vital part of funding support for the arts, screen and creative industries in Scotland and it is important to recognise this.”

East Neuk Festival is one of the first projects to benefit from a two year funding commitment, which wasn’t possible through the project based funding programmes previously operated by Creative Scotland. On receiving £100,000 funding Artistic

East Neuk Director, Svend Brown said: “East Neuk Festival enters its second decade in 2015 and we are delighted to be doing so with the news of this two-year support from Creative Scotland. It both secures our ambitious programme for 2015 and enables us to plan for 2016 with greater security: like most other arts organisations we see every aspect of what we do vastly enhanced by the possibility to plan further ahead.”

Open Project Funding commenced on 1 October, 2014 and sits alongside Regular and Targeted Funding as one of Creative Scotland’s three funding routes.

RSNO clarinettist wins prestigious Salomon Prize

John Cushing, who recently retired as Principal Clarinet of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra after more than three decades, has been awarded the RPS/ABO Salomon Prize, a prestigious award celebrating the outstanding contribution of orchestral players to the UK’s musical life. John was presented with the prize on stage at Edinburgh's Usher Hall recently during a concert of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven conducted by Sir Roger Norrington. The UK boasts many of the world’s finest orchestras, many of which have trophy cabinets bursting with awards in testimony to their brilliance on the concert platform and in the recording studio. Yet, the contribution of individual musicians within an orchestra often goes unnoticed.

The Salomon Prize citation from the RPS and ABO reads: “The players of the RSNO describe John Cushing as a powerful communicator, a natural leader and an incredible musician and colleague. He has shown outstanding service to the RSNO, joining in 1978 and has provided support, commitment and a generosity of character that is second to none. Whether serving on the RSNO Board as the Player Director, in education work or as a soloist, he constantly seeks to share his passion for music. He has been a touchstone of the orchestra and the Salomon Jury wishes him all the best on his retirement.”

The Salomon Prize was created by the Royal Philharmonic Society and Association of British Orchestras in 2011 to celebrate the ‘unsung heroes’ of orchestral life; the orchestral players that make our orchestras

great. The award is named after Johann Peter Salomon, violinist and founding member of the Philharmonic Society in 1813; this year is the bicentenary of his death. Each year, players in all orchestras across the UK are asked to nominate a colleague who has been ‘an inspiration to their fellow players, fostered greater spirit of teamwork and shown commitment and dedication above and beyond the call of duty’. John Cushing is the fourth recipient of the prize, following in the footsteps of outstanding musicians from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Hallé and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

John was appointed Principal Clarinet with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 1978. Since then he has appeared as soloist with the Orchestra on many occasions, and has an extensive Concerto repertoire, including James MacMillan’s Ninian, which was written for and dedicated to him, and released on the BIS label to great critical acclaim. As well as performing the world debut of the Ninian Concerto, John has given several other world and Scottish première performances of works for solo clarinet and chamber ensemble, including pieces by Sweeney, Adams, Ted Kirk and again James MacMillan, this time a piece for clarinet alone – From Galloway which is also dedicated to him.

John Cushing has a particular interest in chamber and contemporary music. Over the years he has been a member of and played with groups as diverse as Paragon, Allander and Hebrides Ensembles, many string quartets and the clarinet, soprano and piano trio Vocalise. He is currently particularly busy in the Phoenix wind trio with Katherine Bryan (flute) and David Hubbard (bassoon) as well as the wind quintet Primi whose players are members of both the RSNO and Hallé.

John has taught clarinet at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland since 1978 and gives masterclasses and recitals throughout the country, primarily with pianist Scott Mitchell.

Raasay passengers enjoy ‘pop-up’ musical treat from BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

The players – a trumpeter and a trombonist from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, which is on Skye for a residency – stunned islanders and visitors on MV Hallaig by striking up a tune as the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry left the pier at Raasay. Hedley and Simon were borrowed by Portree-based ATLAS Arts to surprise passengers as part of the BBC’s UK-wide “TEN Pieces” classical music education project.

Part of a series of pop-up events, the musical adventure began on the 3pm ferry from Sconser, with the musicians travelling across, complete with a media entourage. And the duo – Simon Johnson on the trombone and Hedley Benson with the trumpet – then began to play as passengers boarded the ferry at Raasay for its 25 minute return journey.

“The crew was in on the secret and we were looking forward to seeing what happened,” said MV Hallaig master Gavin Crawford. “In all my years as a skipper I’ve never had a request like this – but we were happy to help and it was amazing to see the

reaction of all our passengers when the music began.

“The two musicians were absolutely brilliant and the journey certainly passed in a very different way to normal.”

Hedley and Simon treated their small but enthusiastic ferry audience to a mixture of melodies ranging from contemporary pieces all the way through to Robert Burns.

Caledonian MacBrayne takes pride in supporting cultural events throughout the Highlands and islands, including key, long-standing relationships with the Royal National Mod, HebCelt and Tiree Music Festival. The company’s CalMac Culture competition to find new traditional music talent was launched last year and well-received, and a similar competition will run again in

2015.

CalMac operates the UK’s largest ferry network and transported 4.65million passengers, 1.1 million cars and 93,000 commercial vehicles on 32 vessels to 25 island destinations in 2014 alone.

March 2015 sees the release of the third Blueflint album ‘Stories from home - Stories of relationships, parenthood and life in a home town form the thread running through this eclectic yet captivating album. With Paul Savage (King Creosote, From Scotland with Love, Mogwai) in the producer's chair, the album sees the band naturally evolving towards an alt folk flavour.

The album's atmospheric opener 'King Of My Apple Tree', takes us through the last days of a relationship, with eery, shimmering guitar layers, before bursting into the joyous 'Little Stranger' underpinned by bouncing banjo rhythms and an infectious guitar hook. The quirky and heartfelt 'I Could Have Done More For You' is driven by rhythmic percussion and sparkling piano passages lending a lightness to the more sorrowful lyrics. The uplifting and anthemic 'This Is A Story' is a beautifully candid account of family love. The primal 'Hawk And Eagle' tips its hat to the band's Americana roots. The album's parting note is the sparse and emotive 'Don't Make A Fool Out Of Me' The sound of Blueflint is defined by the sublime close harmonies of Deborah Arnott and Clare Neilson whose voices are accompanied by a five-piece line-up intertwining banjos, fiddle, piano, electric guitar, double-bass and drums in raw, honest and beautifully-crafted songs, imbued with the power of Paul Savage’s new direction in production for the band. Blueflint supported The Proclaimers for six weeks in 2012, taking in venues such as Edinburgh's Playhouse and London's Shepherds Bush Empire. Their atmospheric and evocative performances proved them to be a formidable live act gaining them a strong reputation and following throughout the UK. The band performed to sell out shows during the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012 and 2013; the band's 2013 Fringe show was selected to perform as part of the prestigious 'Made in Scotland'

Showcase. Being awarded funding from Creative Scotland in 2014, Blueflint recorded their third album at Chem 19 studios. They are now delighted to be releasing the album in Spring 2015 with a national tour to follow. Blueflint have released two previous albums; 'High Bright Morning' in 2009 and 'Maudy Tree' in 2011. Blueflint are: Deborah Arnott (vocals, banjo, ukulele), Clare Neilson (vocals, banjo). Musicians on the album are: Danny Hart (guitar, mandolin, fiddle); James Lindsay (double bass); Davey MacAulay (guitar, piano, xylophone); Ali Murray (drums/percussion); Paul Savage (harmonium, piano) Album artwork comes from Scottish artist Steven Hood and also depicts scenes from the band's home turf in Leith, Edinburgh. Album Launch Key Dates Thurs 26 March- The Greennote, London Sun 5 April - The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh Tues 7 April Star Folk Club, Glasgow A full list of all the tour dates across the UK and Ireland can be found below and on the Blueflint website: www.blueflint.org.uk/gigs www.blueflint.org.uk www.facebook.com/Blueflint https://twitter.com/Blueflint

Unlikely duo span continents and generations to release eponymous debut EP Aileen Henderson is a Dumfries-born 18 year old whose father always had instruments lying around the house and introduced her to The Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton and Elvis Presley. Singing country from a very early age, she overcame her shyness in her teens and started uploading videos online and gained confidence from the positive feedback they generated. Her YouTube channel has now had over 68,000 views and counting. Now living in Galway she has

appeared in the Irish press and raised €4,000 for her local cystic fibrosis foundation with the release of a charity CD. Rex Haberman is a veteran rocker from Minneapolis who has released two solo albums, one duo album, and most recently a series of albums and EPs with the socially conscious band War Poets. War Poets have toured the USA for over two years, playing about 80-100 shows per year and are played coast to coast on AAA, commercial, and college radio. This collection of five Americana tracks holds many stories. Where Memories Live is about dementia and the toll it takes on families, Solitude, Gratitude is about dealing with a chronic illness and Mountain Song tells the tale of finding your way despite life's injustices. Aileen and Rex's project is called Light Over There, a reference to these two songwriters finding inspiration across the sea that separates them. The two make an unlikely pair, living on different continents and being from different generations. They met through Twitter in June 2014, connected by email, then starting writing together across the Atlantic. By late 2014, they had five fully composed original songs ready to be recorded. The band selected for the project included established Nashville musicians, Jesse Isley (guitar), Adam Beard (bass), Tim Lauer (keyboards), former Gin Blossoms drummer John Richardson, and backing singers Lizzy Herder and Jennifer Grimm. Aileen’s vocals were recorded in Galway, with Ray Diamond while all

the other instruments were laid down at Drum Farm Studio in Wisconsin. Rex and Aileen have still never met in person! The songs were then mixed by five time Grammy winner Joe Baldridge and mastered by another five time Grammy winner Richard Dodd. www.facebook.com/lightoverthere https://twitter.com/Aileen__H www.warpoets.net

The Alchemist EP / download Release Date: Out Now

David Knowles is a distinctive vocalist and songwriter based in Edinburgh, with a growing international social media following. Lyrically, David draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a range of exotic instruments including the Didjeridoo, African Djembe drum and far eastern Dulcimer. With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, David’s voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. With a busy schedule of live performances already planned, 2015 promises to be a big year for David Knowles including the launch of debut album “Footsteps” on 9 March.

Flight of Time Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now Flight Of Time is that album. And it takes Siobhan’s talents far beyond anything we might’ve anticipated. Made over a period of two years, in collaboration with reputed singer-songwriter James Grant, Flight Of Time may seem far from the trad ballads Siobhan is famed for. But these 10 contemporary songs are, for her, as compelling as any ancient tale. “I’m not turning my back on traditional music,” she explains. “For me, folk songs have the same purpose as the songs I’ve recorded on this album. It’s the storytelling element of both that I love. What that song means to you is what matters.” Listen/Watch: www.siobhanmiller.com Available from: www.verticalrecords.co.uk www.siobhanmiller.com https://twitter.com/Siobhan_Miller www.facebook.com/SiobhanMillerMusic
