Organised by the Scottish Parliament in conjunction with the Scottish Political and Cultural Partnership, the event will involve a wide range of musicians from right across Scotland.

Holyrood Rocks 2015 aims to encourage young people's engagement in the political process, particularly among 16 and 17 year olds, who have been given the right to vote in Scottish Parliamentary and local elections. By showcasing young musical talent whilst relaying the importance of democratic rights and the significance of the right to vote, Holyrood Rocks 2015 hopes to encourage voter engagement in Scotland and beyond.

There will be 8 regional heats during the month of October, in partnership with local authorities and using community spaces and venues, based on the 8 regions of Scotland which elect list MSP’s using the Additional Member System (Central Scotland, Glasgow, Highlands & Islands, Lothian, Mid Scotland and Fife, North East Scotland, South Scotland and West Scotland.) The national final will be held in the Scottish Parliament’s Main Hall on Saturday 31 October, featuring winners from the 8 regional heats handpicked by our judges. These regional and national events will reach thousands of people across Scotland, taking the message across the breadth of the country, and will celebrate Scotland’s local communities, in addition to local spaces, hubs and venues, maximising use in the community and encouraging local residents to take part in any way they can.

Gleadhraich set to electrify AC/DC fans in aid of Bon Scott memorial

Award-winning local celtic rock band Gleadhraich are set to electrify AC/DC fans in Glasgow in aid of the campaign to raise a memorial statue to Angus rock legend Bon Scott.

The band, who were Angus Cultural Ambassadors for 2014, are due to headline the pre-and after-party at Glasgow’s Record Factory for AC/DC’s Scottish leg of their Rock or Bust world tour on 28 June.

The event, which will also feature DJ sets from Danger Ross and Ian McAdam, a barbecue in the beer garden and transport to and from Hampden for the AC/DC gig, will raise funds for the campaign to erect a memorial statue of ex-AC/DC frontman Bon Scott in his hometown of Kirriemuir.

The singer, who died in 1980, was born in Forfar and lived in Kirriemuir for five years before moving to Melbourne, Australia. The campaign to erect a lifesize bronze memorial statue, like the one in Melbourne, is

being run by Kirriemuir-based community group DD8 Music and needs another £15,000 to reach its target. It has commissioned Ayrshire sculptor John McKenna to design and sculpt the statue. Gleadhraich recorded their first EP in DD8’s studio in January last year.

Speaking about the gig, Gleadhraich frontman Craig Weir said:

“We’re delighted to be playing the official pre-party and helping the campaign to recognise an Angus music legend. We’ve played Bon Fest several times and last year we supported Chris Slade from AC/DC there.

“It will be great to warm up the Hampden Park crowd for these rock legends. We’re going to throw a few AC/DC classics into our set for them. The Rock Or Bust World tour has been a real success so far and I’m sure Glasgow will be no different.”

Tickets are still available for the party on the Gleadhraich website at http://gleadhraich.com/

Big Big Sing – a nationwide celebration of singing - will, this summer, bring together singers from all walks of life for a one-off opportunity to perform with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra live on stage at BBC Proms in the Park on Saturday 12 September at Glasgow Green. BBC Proms in the Park will be presented by Jamie MacDougall and will be broadcast live on BBC Two Scotland from 7.15pm on the night and simulcast on Radio Scotland, streaming live across the UK. It will also be available to view on BBC iPlayer and the highlights show will be broadcast on BBC Scotland at Christmas. Big Big Sing have brought together a group of 100 singers, who have never performed together, to rehearse at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, during a series of seven rehearsals between now and the event. The Big Big Singers will perfect a variety of songs including gospel and pop hits as well as some Scottish favourites before performing them live with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra live on stage at BBC Proms in the Park. Big Big Sing have enjoyed a huge success since it began in early 2014, since then attracting 66,779 people to sing at 178 live events across the country, with Big Big Sing Days held from Shetland to Devon. Big Big Sing’s online singing portal – which featured a wealth of materials and information for those looking to take up singing - attracted 153,748 visits, and there were 37,897 downloads of free songs from The Big Big Songbook. Big Big Sing’s YouTube and Vimeo channels – which hosted resources including

vocal workouts – received 52,364 views. Big Big Sing is funded by Glasgow 2014, Creative Scotland, Glasgow UNESCO City of Music and Spirit of 2012 (set up by an endowment from the Big Lottery Fund). This is part of Spirit’s £4.5m commitment to sustaining and extending the Commonwealth Games legacy in Scotland and across the UK. Director of Big Big Sing, Svend Brown said: ”Big Big Sing are thrilled to be involved in BBC Proms in the Park this September. Glasgow Green was, of course, the location of our Big Big BIG Sing Day during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, where we welcomed thousands of singers, from across the commonwealth, to sing together as a choir. We will always have a great fondness for Glasgow Green for that reason and I know for a fact that BBC Proms in the Park is going to be an equally

special occasion and a brand new experience for our Big Big Singers. Usually the audience are the choir at Big Big Sing but BBC Proms in the Park will be a completely new dynamic, sharing the stage with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is a huge honour and I know I will be incredibly proud to watch our group of Big Big Singers take to the stage on the night.” Director of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Gavin Reid, said: “The BBC SSO strive to work with communities across Scotland and are very much looking forward to the Big Big Sing joining the orchestra for a wonderful celebration of music.” www.bigbigsing.org www.facebook.com/BigBigSing www.twitter.com/AllGlasgowMusic

Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys return to Scotland for full tour

One of the top bands on the American roots music circuit, Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys created a huge impact when they made their UK debut earlier this year as one of the main visiting attractions at Shetland Folk Festival. Widely regarded as one of the most outstanding acts of the event, they return once more for appearances at several major UK summer festivals – and tour dates in Scotland.

With roots in the Great Lakes State of Michigan, it's been said there is something to please all tastes in their live performances - praised as real passionate affairs that stir the blood and exhilarate - from bluesy works of wonder to blistering bluegrass beauty.

Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys are renowned for their fresh approach to the American roots genres which are explored and confidently conquered.

The media got excited when they began to release their albums in Europe. “Intoxicating” was how Folkwords summed them up, while Maverick magazine said they played “uplifting rootsy acoustic music of the finest quality.”

Reviewing their brand new release, Folk Radio UK said: “There’s plenty to be shiny and happy about here.” AmericanaUK said it was “exciting – with a pulse and rhythm that sets them apart.”

This time, the band will appear at a number of prestigious UK events including HebCelt, North Berwick’s Fringe by The Sea, and Poole Bluegrass Festival in Dorset.

“We are excited to be heading back to the UK for a longer visit – it’s something we have been planning to do for quite a while,” said the lead vocalist as they get set for their return to these shores.

“We had to head back to the States after Shetland to play some big outdoor events there too, before returning for this more extensive visit in July and August.

“Our UK agent has added a lot of tour dates around the country and it’s going to be great to hit the road, see the sights and meet a bunch of new people too,” added Lindsay Lou.

“When we were over in April and May we played a couple of Scottish dates including Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine and the Performing Arts Centre in Kilbarchan, and we had an absolute blast.

“Those shows went down so well that we have been invited back to both of those venues again this time. That couldn’t make us any happier!”

“We are playing lots of different venues and we now know that Scots audiences are enthusiastic and out to have a good time.”

The band will kick off this latest visit with five Scottish dates in July then head for England and Ireland before returning to end the tour back north of the Border for another run of six dates. They are making such a big impact with their new album, Ionia getting rave reviews and much radio exposure, that a return in 2016 is already on the cards.

Tour Dates: JULY - 17th Aros Centre, Isle of Skye / 18th HebCeltFest, Stornoway / 19th Eden Court Theatre, Inverness / 20th Victoria Park House Hotel, Edinburgh / 21th Performing Arts Centre, Kilbarchan. AUGUST - 11th The Spiegletent, Fringe By The Sea, North Berwick / 12th Eastgate Theatre, Peebles / 13th Glenbuchat Hall, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire / 14th Universal Hall, Findhorn / 15th Birnam Arts Centre, Perthshire / 16th Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine Full tour schedule at ..... www.brookfield-knights.com/up-coming-tours.html

Forty teenagers take over the RSNO for two days

For the second year in a row the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) has been taken over by forty teenagers, for a two-day work experience initiative, where the young people planned, promoted and presented an orchestral concert.

The forty-eight young people, between sixteen and eighteen years

old, originated from across Scotland, representing twenty local authorities spanning over 300 miles. Many of the young recruits have joined the RSNO’s Young Ambassador programme, which has been designed to develop interest in live orchestral music through school-aged advocates across the county. They joined staff and musicians at the Orchestra’s base in Glasgow on 15 and 16 June and were assigned to each department of the organisation – from marketing and development to artistic planning, conducting and playing in the Orchestra.

A number of the young people learned practical workshop delivery skills which they then used to lead

music workshops with primary aged pupils of Glasgow Gaelic School. The two-day programme culminated in a performance with the RSNO at the end of the second day, which is billed as the farewell concert for the Orchestra’s current home, the Henry Wood Hall, to which family, friends and special guests were invited.

RSNO Director of Learning and Engagement Jenn Minchin: “We’re delighted to have once again open our doors to an influx of youth in this way, giving them the chance to run one of Scotland’s busiest performing arts organisations. It has provided valuable experience to those seeking to pursue employment in the arts, and is intended to be challenging, stimulating and fun. You never know - we may very well have a future RSNO conductor or Chief Executive among our group.”

Last year the RSNO launched its programmes for schools, RSNO Engage for Schools, one of the most comprehensive and far-reaching initiatives of its kind. Headlining the initiative, the RSNO launched a national composition competition, in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, open to twelve to eighteen year olds across the country. Notes From Scotland invites young composers to write a two-minute work for an instrumental trio, quartet or quintet. The theme for the first year’s Notes

From Scotland is inspired by five National Trust locations around the country, and a concert featuring the five finalists and subsequent winner was held at Perth Concert Hall on 17 June.

The RSNO’s Young Ambassadors scheme invites young people aged sixteen to eighteen to help promote the live orchestral experience in their area. With one RSNO Young Ambassador for nearly every local authority in Scotland, their championing of the live orchestral experience has contributed to increased attendance among young people, with numbers of RSNO concert-goers under twenty-six years old rising to 15% across Scotland and nearly 20% in Glasgow.

For more information on RSNO Engage, contact the RSNO Engage Team on 0141 225 3574, email: [email protected], or visit www.rsno.org.uk/engage.

The Scottish Storytelling Centre, in association with TRACS (Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland) present five days of storytelling, music and dance which celebrates the unique heritage, culture, community and stories of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Whether you are a local, a tourist, young or old, there’s enjoyment and entertainment for all as we transport you back through the history of the Old Town, exploring historical characters and customs, as well as highlighting the resurgence of the area and the continuing fresh wave of creativity.

Events kick off with Hare on Tuesday 23 June, which charts the unreliable final confession of William Hare regarding his acquaintance with William Burke, peppered with interruptions and contradictions by Mrs. Margaret Hare.

John and Noreen also present a second showcase storytelling performance on Thursday 25 June, entitled Ladies of Pleasure, which is a historic guide into the revelations of nightly pleasures available in 18th century Edinburgh, delivered with humour, satire and bawdy poetry penned by Burns, amongst others.

Heritage Stories also offer the opportunity to see both performances in a Double Bill on Saturday 27 June.

Midsummer Ceilidh, Liar’s Tour and John Knox House Revealed - The Old Town celebration wouldn’t be complete without a Midsummer Ceilidh on Wednesday 24 June, heralding the

warmth and light of summer with seasonal dances such as The Haymakers called by Stan Reeves and the Minnow Band, plus a chance for mayhem with a presentation of ancient folk drama, Galoshins, as Stan Reeves explains:

“This is a unique opportunity for people to engage with the once common, and now almost forgotten, tradition of mummers plays in Britain. Mumming engages with people in community settings in a way that is direct and predates enclosed theatre. There are magic moments in the piece, such as when the slain hero is brought back to life, that you can hear a pin drop.”

The Meadows Mummers are fresh from performing the 20 minute folk drama at the Edinburgh Meadows Festival and have performed Galoshins in countless festivals, pubs and schools. They re-enact the ancient, elemental tale with lots of madcap fun guaranteed in this

interweaving of song, drama and story. Then Donald Smith and James Spence offer two very different tours exploring the Netherbow area, with old and new merged through the Storytelling Centre and John Knox House.

Inside History: John Knox House Revealed on Thursday 25 June is a fantastic opportunity to hear the true dramas of John Knox House with storyteller and curator Donald Smith. Then tall tales and flat out lies from storyteller James Spence on Friday 26 June in A Liar’s Tour of the Scottish Storytelling Centre, where not everything is as it seems… See the very walls melt away, with all their rich history, on this unique and fun story tour.

Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer songwriters, with fans including Ricky Ross, Bob Harris, Irvine Welsh and Russell Brand. His songs Raining in Glasgow and Man From Leith have been hailed as classics of Scottish songwriting.

His new album (his sixth solo CD) – Into the Sea – was recorded in Nashville and released in May, to rave 4 and 5 star reviews and claims of “best yet”. It was Album of the Week (BBC Radio Scotland’s Iain Anderson Show) and Dean was Scotland on Sunday’s Artist of the Week. Both singles from the album (Valentine’s Day in New York and Evergreen) were playlisted by BBC Radio Scotland, with the album gaining airplay throughout the UK, and beyond. It has been a regular presence in the iTunes chart since its release. Into the Sea defies categorisation and has had radio play on rock, indie, Americana, country and folk shows, including BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe’s Folk Show.

Dean was delighted to be invited to “Whispering” Bob Harris’s house in Oxford recently, to record a session for the renowned Under the Apple Tree Sessions for WBTV (co-ordinated by Bob’s son Miles Myerscough-Harris) which will be available online from mid-June. Other radio sessions are in the pipeline, including one for Radio 2 this summer.

This summer sees him hit the road with gigs north and south of the border, including 2 nights at London’s Green Note and the highly respected and popular Southern Fried Americana Festival in Perth.

Armed with a searingly soulful voice, skilfully crafted stories and memorable heart-twisting melodies, Dean filters his love of Americana through a gritty yet lyrical Scottish sensibility. Dean’s music draws as much from his Scottish roots, especially his home town of Leith (referenced and loved by the Proclaimers) as from his US heroes. The emotional honesty in his

songs shines through as he sings about people and places, love and regrets, drawing favourable comparisons with the likes of Springsteen. He is a compelling and engaging live performer, both solo and with his Whisky Hearts band, with an innate ability to connect with any audience.

In his early career Dean was the front-man of the much loved Scottish Americana band The Felsons. His music has taken him far and wide, including Europe, USA and Australia. He has played shows and toured with the Mavericks, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Joan As Policewoman, John Hiatt and Nanci Griffith, to name but a few. Into the Sea was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Neilson Hubbard and a whole host of amazing US musicians, including award winning guitarist Will Kimbrough and renowned singer-songwriters Kim Richey and Suzy Bogguss. It is released on London based independent label Drumfire Records.

'At Dawn of Day' the new album from Scottish up-and-comers Barluath was launched in May at Cottier’s Theatre. The band formed in early 2010 when Colin Greeves was asked by veteran Scots singer Mick West to put together an act for the annual Burns supper at the Partick Folk Club in Glasgow.

Colin did just that, assembling piper Edward Seaman, singer Ainsley Hamill, Alistair Paterson on keyboards and Danny Dreaver on guitar, all of whom were studying music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland at the time. Following the gig they were asked to appear on Fergus Muirhead’s show on Glasgow’s Celtic Music Radio and decided to “put the band together on a more permanent basis.” Danny left shortly after, but the band returned to being a five-piece in 2011 with the addition of fiddler Eilidh Firth. Highlights of their first few years included a debut album produced by Phil Cunningham, multiple UK tours, a Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections Festival and a trip across the pond to perform in Washington D.C. as part of the Scottish Government’s St. Andrews Day celebrations.

Jump forward to late 2014 and Barluath are working on their second album with an expanded line-up, Englishman Luc McNally having joined as

their new guitar player. “At Dawn of Day” was crowd-funded through Kickstarter and, in one short month, not only achieved its goal but actually surpassed it by over 40%. The album was produced by Anna Massie, engineered by Jim Neilson and recorded at Gorbals Sound, Glasgow (Deacon Blue, Julie Fowlis, Labrinth). According to Eddie Seaman: “For this album, we went for a more live sound. The first album was recorded in one room and a vocal booth with everyone going in individually to record their take. For the second album, we recorded together in isolated booths.” The album includes contemporary and traditional pieces, as well as a number of original tunes and some traditional material that has never been recorded before.

So how do they gather such an eclectic mix of material? “We’ve taken a lot from several different sources for this album.” says Eddie. “Songs like “Am Bron Binn” can be found in the Gaelic tradition, whereas songs like “Away From The Pits” were found while playing gigs. We met Chris Algar when we played the Northwich Folk Club and he sent us the lyrics. Other tunes were composed by members of the band such as “The Big Chief”, written by Eilidh, and “Seonaidh Meg” which Alastair wrote for his grandfather.” The album has already received widespread airplay and acclaim since its release, was featured as album of the week on BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal and has been reviewed in major music magazines and mainstream newspapers, including the Sunday Herald.

So where would Barluath like to be in another five years time? Eddie again: “We would like to be playing bigger festivals around the UK and Europe. We’d also love to travel further afield such as America and Asia. We would also hope to record another album and continue to pick up inspiration as we travel more and are exposed to more musical styles.”

Having just returned from the Labadoux Festival in Belgium, with a string of UK festivals coming up in the summer, booked tours to Germany and Denmark in October, and an ever-growing fan base, these aspirations are clearly well within their reach. www.barluath.com www.facebook.com/Barluath https://twitter.com/barluath

IAIN MORRISON EAS Album cd / download / vinyl? Release Date: 31 July It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him. RACHEL SERMANNI Tied to the Moon Album : cd / download / vinyl Release Date: 10 July

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.

Ripped From The Wire Spine ep download Release Date: Out Now "The EP captures Josephine’s quirky style beautifully; a refreshing debut that makes her stand out from the crowd, certainly in these Northern plains anyway. Her music has a direct approach with the lyrics taking centre stage, wrapped in her accomplished almost Ben Folds style with a nod to Regina Spektor (who she has stated as being an influence). Tracks like You (Are Not The Reason), is a crushingly simple yet charming address to a former flame. If she can continue to go from strength to strength she is capable of delivering greatness.
