Monthly Ministry Highlight

Bethlehem Lutheran Church/Light of Christ Mission Trip to Fremont, NE

Sunday, September 29 to Sunday, October 6, 2019 by Irene Yap

On a beautiful Sunday morning, eleven members from BLC and LOC gathered at our church entrance before leaving for Fremont, NE, to help Fremont Habitat for Humanity with flood relief work. Pastor Keith and Father Teri came out to give us blessings for our mission and journey.

Linda and Art Holm drove their own truck, as did Ken Wright. Bob Cotton drove "Josephine" for the first couple of hours with passengers Todd Propp, Matt James (both also shared the driving) plus the LOC contingent: Pete Conti (who drove the 2nd "shift"), Pat Guilbeault, Bob Franch, Mary Franch and Irene Yap.

In the interest of time, we brought our sack lunch to enjoy on the drive and only stopped for gasoline/restrooms. It was dinner time at Country Buffet in Lincoln. When we arrived at 8 p.m. at Country Bible Church (CBC) in Blair, Pastor Glen greeted and showed us around their beautiful facility. They provided air-mattresses and cots in two classrooms—our dorms and individual little space for the week. We also met Mary Henning, our cook, who had arrived earlier from Milford, Kansas. She prepared our daily breakfasts, brown bag lunches to bring with us to our job sites, and delicious dinners when we returned in the evenings after much needed showers at the Blair YMCA (as CBC does not have showers). Mary creatively used the food supplies from CBC plus whatever she purchased with funds we had sent ahead of time.

Monday morning, we had our orientation at Fremont Habitat by Joy and Kesha. They have an impressive office with a huge thrift store. Our assignment instructions were to go down Ridge Road, look for MJ, a 12-year-old on a bike with a blue shirt, and follow him. That was a very accurate and fun "GPS" direction! MJ is home-schooled by his single dad, Jack. Their small cabin is very close to Platte River and had suffered severe flood damage. Terry Baumert was our Habitat supervisor and our job that day was to finish installing vinyl siding. The 11 of us took on various tasks—unfortunately we did not have certain materials to complete putting up all the siding, but we had hoped to return to finish our assignment.

Alas, it rained that evening into the next day so plans had to change. Days 2—5, the "drywall” crew—Todd, Matt, Ken, Pete, Bob, Mary and Irene—worked at Antonia's Habitat home to restore her finished basement. We hung 69 sheets of drywall plus mud and taped most of the that drywall in four days. The owner wrote Habitat a very sweet note—here is a short quote: "Thank you! So very very much!!! Having you guys come and help us made things a lot easier and better for us." Antonia's daughter and grandchildren live with her.

Meanwhile, on Day 2, Bob, Pat, Linda and Art, aka the "painting and clean up" crew, painted the Jefferson House, a large home for troubled youth. Day 3, this crew worked at the 20,000 square foot Flood Disaster Relief Warehouse—swept, made shelves and sorted countless work suits, latex gloves, face masks, etc. Day 4, back to the Jefferson House, removing old labels off shelving prior to applying new paint. Day 5, they worked on Candi's (Habitat) home, painted her entire basement following a Chicago crew, who had put up the new drywall earlier that week.

We played on Saturday—visiting the Omaha Zoo and the famous bridge over the Missouri River where Nebraska and Iowa meet. That evening, we treated ourselves to "fine dining" at a famous restaurant in Blair where most of us enjoyed their famous Omaha steaks.

Thank you, Bob, Pete, Matt and Todd, for driving us home safely. All of us are filled with joy and gratitude that we were given this opportunity to help others in need. Thank you to our entire BLC and LOC community for your financial and spiritual support. Peace and Blessings to all.

If you have questions regarding our mission trips, contact Bob Cotton ([email protected], 303-651-6563).

Pastor Katie’s Installation!

Pastor Katie will officially be installed as our new pastor on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. Bishop Gonia will preside at the service. Following the service, we will have a potluck luncheon celebration organized by neighborhood groups.

As a reminder to all, please wear your name tags so Pr. Katie and Chili can get to know all of us more easily. If you need a tag, please let Nancy know so she can make a new one for you.

Worship

November 3 – All Saints Sunday

• Luke 6:20–31: In echoes of the prophet Isaiah and Mary's song of praise, Jesus reveals surprising things about who enjoys blessing and who endures woe. He invites his disciples to shower radical love, blessings, forgiveness, generosity, and trust, even to enemies and outsiders.

• All Saints Jazz service

• Mile High Jazz Band and Adult choir at 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

November 10 – Twenty second Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 20:27–38: The Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection of the dead, try to trap Jesus. They formulate the convoluted case of a serial widow who marries a succession of seven brothers. Jesus responds by teaching about God, to whom all are alive and in whom all relationships are fulfilled.

• Bluegrass service at both services

November 17 – Twenty third Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 21:5–19: As history moves toward God’s fulfillment, there will be frightening signs and events. Before the end, believers will draw strength from their relationship to God and shall be given the words they need to testify and to endure without fear.

• Adult choir at 8:00 a.m.; Boomwhackers and Revelation choir at 10:15 a.m.

• Liturgy setting 10

November 24 – Christ the King Sunday

• Luke 23:33–43: Amid scoffing and slander from those who sarcastically call him Messiah and king, Jesus reveals that to be Messiah and king is to give one’s life for others. Here he uses his power to welcome a despised sinner to paradise but puts his own death into God’s hands.

• Adult choir at 10:15 a.m.

• Liturgy setting 10

Daylight Savings Time Ending

Faith Formation

Adult Forums for October

November 3: Faith Formation: More than just Sunday School, led by Deaconess Kristen. All are invited to come for this short adult forum that will lift up the many ways we do Faith Formation here at BLC. This is designed to be an informative and short conversation that will define what Faith Formation is and highlight the programs that provide the platform for Faith Formation. More conversation about Faith Formation will follow in the coming months. This will be a shortened session due to the Jazz Concert that is also between worship services.

God and Science: This series is designed to explore an aspect of the relationship between science and faith. The conversation will begin with a short video, narrated by Dr. Paul Wallace, who is an astronomer, professor, theologian and self-proclaimed science nerd, all in one person! Following the video, Fred Fanton will lead discussion based on hand-outs for each video. This curriculum was developed by Luther Seminary and made possible from a grant John Templeton Foundation. This is a product of a three-year project entitled “Science for Youth Ministry: The Plausibility of Transcendence.” Its purpose is to catalyze faith-and-science conversations for people of all ages.

November 10: God and Science: A Tale of Two Books

Do you feel like faith and science are in competition, that you must choose one or the other? The different stories told by faith and science often overwhelm us. But what if our faith could be enlarged and inspired by science?

Page 5: Ministry Events in November...Bethlehem Star November 2019 Worship Services 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Learning Hour 9:10–10:05 a.m. “Gathered around Word and Sacrament, we live

November 17: God and Science: Hurtling Through Space

Throughout history, Christians have been central to advancing our understanding of the universe through science. But recently, many Christians are being taught to ignore or fear science. What if we, as people of faith, were reinvigorated to celebrate scientific discovery as an expression of our God-Given capacity to know and understand?

November 24: God and Science: Lobsters and Poetry

New scientific discoveries can continually inform and expand our understanding of the universe. As our perspective grows, we are confronted with a choice: are we willing to shed old beliefs in order to embrace an enlarged faith that fits our new understanding?

December 1: God and Science: Atoms, Arranged to Love

Are we fantastically complex collections of atoms and nothing more? Or are we fantastically complex collections of atoms that somehow carry the divine image and have a deep capacity for love? How might faith provide understanding about life that science cannot?

Please continue to check the weekly bulletins and our website (https://www.bethlehem-lutheran.net/faith-formation/adult.html) for updated schedules.

Congregational Support Needed!

On November 10, our Confirmation Mentor-Mentee pairs will be working with Lutheran Family Services to build Thanksgiving Meal Bags for families in need. If you would like to support their project, please have any of the following items available at your home for our kids to come get on their scavenger hunt. Please also contact Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]) and let her know that you would like to have the kids stop by your house to pick up what you have on hand! (No telling what you have, though, because what they get is part of the activity “game” as there are points assigned to each item.) If you do not receive a stop at your house, you can still donate items by dropping them in Deaconess Kristen’s office before November 10. The items will be used to complete the bags.

Requested Items:

• Package of stuffing mix

• Can of chicken broth (low salt)

• Can of cranberry sauce

• Can(s) of vegetables

• Pumpkin or banana bread mix

• Packs of hot chocolate, tea or apple cider

• Apple or cranberry juice (small sizes)

• $25 gift card for turkey & fresh items

Please put the food items in a reusable grocery bag (bags can be found at most stores for around $1) and collect all gift cards outside bags. Please contact Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]) with any questions.

Confirmation Service Project—Homeless Outreach Bags

We had that whole wagon full from “God's Work Our Hands.” Day, and it is officially empty now! So, with the coming colder temps, bags with socks, gloves, Chapstick, and pocket warmers, plus soft granola bars, protein items (tuna, etc.), comb, and toothbrush/paste, could be quite helpful to hand to folks who are in need. The confirmation class will be gathering and assembling bags to have ready for our community to take with them out into the world. Please consider supporting their efforts by bringing in donations and placing them in the collection bench marked "Confirmation Project: Homeless Outreach Bags". We will collect through November 9. Thank you for your support! Please contact Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]) with any questions.

Sunday School

Sunday school does meet each Sunday this month. Preschool (ages three and four) through 5th grade will start with group opening at 9:15 a.m. in the back-corner room with the rug. Parents, please pick up your child(ren) from their classrooms at 10:05 a.m. This month we will continue to learn about the parting of the Red Sea and grow together in faith through different hands on activities and stations. Towards the end of the month, we will learn about Advent and start on parts for the Christmas program. For more information talk with Deaconess Ann ([email protected], 720-301-0104 call or text).

As we enter the holiday season, please consider a donation to the Nicaragua Project to help provide food for the 95 preschool students and for their after-school programs. Donations will be matched with a total goal of raising $15,000. You will hear more about this on Sundays in November.

Checks should be made payable to: Bethlehem Lutheran (Nicaragua) and placed in the collection plate or sent to: Bethlehem Lutheran (Nicaragua), 1000 West 15th Ave., Longmont, CO 80501.

First Friday is a monthly adult fellowship opportunity to get to know other church members in a relaxed setting. No reservations are required; just bring an appetizer and a beverage to share.

Stewardship

2020 Stewardship Drive

In the coming weeks, the leadership team at Bethlehem will be crafting the operating budget for 2020. One of the tools we use to construct that budget is the expected revenue from membership. That information comes directly from the pledges that are made. As you consider your giving level for the upcoming year, please consider the following:

Operating costs for the church total approximately $475,000 per year. This includes property maintenance, utilities, payroll, and mission costs. As is the case everywhere, these costs are not decreasing. We can generally expect the overall cost of operations to increase by 2-3% per year via inflation alone. Any increases in mission work, staffing, or unexpected repairs to the facility will add to that amount. Obviously, we don’t want to just do what we’ve always done in the past. We want to grow and will need your support to accomplish that goal.

Everybody has a reason to be a member of this community. We ask that you take inventory of the reasons why you are willing to give to Bethlehem. What is it that we do here that fuels your passion? The answer to that question is likely different for everybody. Whatever your reasons, we hope that you find value in our work here and are willing to support our mission to the best of your ability.

Our annual Stewardship Drive is October 27–November 17. Please stay tuned for more details and listen to the temple talks on November 10 and November 17. Pledge forms can be turned in on November 17. For more information, contact our Stewardship chair, Eric Kittleberger ([email protected], 303-682-2341).

Thank You

Dear friends at Bethlehem Lutheran,

Thank you all so much for the farewell coffee between the services on my last Sunday—for all your gracious comments, and for the many cards, gifts, and well wishes. It was an emotional morning for me and your kindness and support was greatly appreciated.

Please know that the time we shared at Bethlehem was a highlight for me and that you will remain in my thoughts and prayers as you move forward with Pastor Katie into a new and promising future.

May the Lord of the church be with you and bless you as you continue to proclaim, serve and worship as a mission outpost for Christ.

~Keith Prekker

The Rally Day peanut fundraiser was a huge success! $500 will be used towards Vacation Bible School next summer! A big THANK YOU to all!
