Composting As a follow on t o M a y ’ s I n t e r n a t i o n a l C o m p o s t Awareness Week we in Wendover are spreading the word that all garden and green food waste can readily be used to enrich our garden soil and in turn produce strong healthy plants of our choice. In short the key to success in compost making is to have a good balance of ‘browns’ and ‘greens’, some moisture, pockets of air and time for the natural chemicals to react. Did you find that your compost bin hasn’t worked? Are you able to pass on your tips for top dressing or mulching? Do you have a story about wildlife in a compost bin? Come along to meet Master Composters and share your experience (or show your compost) at The Local Produce Market, Manor Waste, 9am to 1pm Saturday 16th June.

Jubilee holiday We will close at 6.30 pm on Friday 1st June and re-open at 8am on Wednesday 6th June. Bucks Urgent Care will provide out of hours cover for urgent problems over the holiday period. If you call the Health Centre’s telephone number, your call will automatically be diverted to them. Please remember that we require 72 hours notice for any prescription requests. On Saturday 2nd June our dispensary will be closed but Lloyds pharmacy in the High Street will be open as usual.

Closure for Staff training We will close at 1pm on Thursday 14th June.

New doctors We welcome two new long-term locum doctors. Dr Andrew Jackson is covering Dr Anna Milward’s maternity leave; he

will be working five sessions per week. Dr Kate Pannell starting working four sessions per week from the beginning of May; she will be with us for six months. Both of these doctors will be helping out with duty sessions – this will free up more appointments for regular doctor team. This should result in shorter waiting times for routine appointments.

Change in clinical software system The planned switchover to the new software system called EMIS-Web, which was scheduled to take place in November 2011, was postponed and will now take place on Tuesday 19th June. Some of the features of the new software include a user friendly interface, much clearer presentation of the medical record, enhanced safety provisions (e.g. for prescribing) and use of graphics in showing results of investigations. It will also enable us to

share medical records with other health care providers (such as Bucks Urgent Care), but it has many security features.

In order to manage the changeover we will be offering only a very limited number of routine appointments on 19th and 20th June. Cover for urgent problems will continue as usual. Despite intensive staff training, hiccups may still occur when EMIS-Web goes live; please bear with us during this time. In the long run we are sure that the new system will greatly enhance our ability to offer you high quality health care.

jubilee year, in aid of St Mary's refurbishment fund.

Cygnet singers Sat 23 June, 7.30pm, St Mary’s Weston T The Cygnet Singers, who are performing at St Mary the Virgin, Weston Turville on Saturday 23 June, are a small group (about 16) from the Wycombe Orpheus Male Voice Choir who have previously sung in full strength at St Marys but have become victims of their own success and have grown to a size which many venues cannot safely accommodate, hence this small elite group performing from a similar male voice repertoire. It is hoped they will include items relevant to the Jubilee celebrations. Tickets £10 (including wine & snacks) at door or Clock Tower.

Family Bike Ride Sunday 24 June, 2.30pm, Manor Waste Get Wendover Cycling will be organising a Family Bike Ride starting from the Manor Waste at 2.30pm. A cycle mechanic will be providing free checkups from 1.30pm on site. The ride will be from Wendover to Halton Parish Church for tea and cake. There will be two routes. Ian Moore studied graphic design at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design. In 1990, on completion of his studies he had work accepted in four major national illustration competitions. Over the next thirteen years he worked as a freelance illustrator commissioned by various publications including Elle, Vogue, New Internationalist, The Telegraph and Financial Times. His illustrations have featured in many design projects, records and book covers. Ian has exhibited widely in solo and group shows in London and Buckinghamshire, and has his work in galleries around the UK. In the last nine years he has moved away from illustration to concentrate solely on painting. Many of these paintings were inspired by the true story of Tottington, a village in Norfolk where his family originally came from. The village was taken over by the War Department for troop training purposes in 1942, with the promise of returning the village. The promise was not kept and the families never returned. This led to work based around village life, the families who were re-located, and the mock characterless buildings that were used by the military for battle training. The current series of paintings depicting houses and homes will be exhibited at ‘a little bird told me gallery’ during Bucks Art Week 9 - 24 June 2012.

There are many more artists just a short drive away, full details of all these and other artists in Buckinghamshire can be found in the Brochures and Directories available at the Library and Tourist Information Centre and at http://www.bucksopenstudios.org.uk

Lionel Abel-Smith Trust A piece of history was made at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Trust (formerly Wendover Community Trust) held on 4 May when Tony Mogford stepped down as Chairman. He had been appointed as Chairman by Lionel Abel-Smith at the creation of the Trust in December 1977. At the buffet lunch held prior to the meeting and attended by a number of invited guests, speeches were made acknowledging Mr Mogford’s enormous dedication to this role over the years. In recognition of his service to Wendover, Mrs Potter (Lord of the Manor) presented him with a painting of Wendover High Street which had belonged to Mr Abel-Smith. Mrs Clayton presented a Scrapbook consisting of aspects of the Trust’s history and written tributes from many people and organisations in Wendover. At their meeting, the Trustees elected Marion Clayton as Chairman for the next three years. As she will also be Chairman of Bucks County Council for the next year, Mr Mogford agreed to stand as Vice-chairman for one year, and was duly elected. Since its last AGM, the Trust made a total of 13 awards amounting to £17,900.69. This included a grant of £6,000 to Wendover HS2

and £7,500 to ‘Wendover Celebrates’. In addition a further £5,000 was promised to Wendover HS2 towards a possible Judicial Review and £20,000 was pledged over two years to help a child with physiotherapy

costs. £5,000 of this had already been paid. At their meeting the Trustees considered a further 32 applications and a total of £26,151 was paid in grants as a result. These were distributed as follows:- Education: £6,064. Elderly: £3,000. Individuals: £600. Medical Areas: £ 2,000. Organisations: £14,487 with a further grant of £3,000

payable in a year’s time and £3,500 promised for later in the year. Although the majority of grants is awarded at the Annual Meeting normally held in early May, applications are considered and grants are awarded throughout the year. Anyone living in the parish of Wendover who wishes to know more about the Trust, or to apply for a grant, should consult the website, www.wendovertrust.org, and contact The Clerk at 14A Vicarage Close, Wendover, HP22 6DS, or [email protected], Glenys Newman, Clerk

We’ve gone BUST Nearly a year ago we began to collect bras in order to help women in the third world and contribute to breast cancer research. Our cups runneth over as a result of the amazing response from you, the Wendover News readers. Bras have been reaching us from far and wide and continue to be delivered to various depots including the Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop. To date a staggering 4591 bras have been collected. We look set to pass our goal of 5,000 by end of June 2012. Given the success we plan to keep collecting till at least Christmas this year and possibly until end of June 2013. We will keep you informed in these pages of new targets and your achievements. For the sake of those benefitting from your unwanted bras – keep collecting!

Mimi’s mission Many are familiar with Mimi’s Mission. Wendover girl Amelia [Mimi] Jane Simpson has Cerebral Palsy. Mimi is back from America after a life-enhancing operation costing some £34,000 raised by family, friends and Wendover people. Mimi now needs a further two years

of intensive physiotherapy costing £20,000. The Rotary Club got the ball rolling at their Annual ‘Big Quiz’ on 9 March by holding one fun game for Mimi, and the Club was able to pass £220 to the family. Every little helps so for details of Mimi’s Mission and how to help see www.mimismission.co.uk.

Stroke Aware If it is bad news to be told you have high blood pressure, it is worse news to find a loved one collapsed on the floor with a drooping face, slurred speech and one side of the body out of control. Worse still to find it might have been preventable. Stroke can happen to anyone at any age but you can reduce the risk by controlling your blood pressure. 60 people attended Rotary Club of Wendover and District’s drop in clinic at the Library Room on 21 April. Blood pressure was taken by qualified doctors and nurses; we gave them information on stroke prevention and topped it off with refreshments. Good that most people’s BP was normal, better that we could advise seven that they should visit their GP for further follow up and best, that this may possibly have prevented a stroke. Rotary Club will run this event next year – come along – what’s the worst that could happen?

We are the Eco Committee and Eco Club from Wendover CE Junior School. Our job is to encourage the children to think about how we can help our world become a better place. We recycle, save energy and water, look after our school grounds and walk, cycle and scoot to school to help reduce pollution. We were awarded Eco School Ambassador status last May, only one of 10 schools in the country. We often carry out frequent litter picks around the school campus and, once, around the whole of Wendover. On this occasion we were dismayed at the amount of litter just thrown on the ground by people who couldn’t be bothered to find a nearby bin. Some of us have been reading about the Daily Mail’s campaign to tidy up Britain’s streets and we think it would be a good idea to do the same in Wendover. In a few weeks time Wendover is going to be full of people enjoying all the festivities put on to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. What a shame it would be for piles of discarded litter to ruin the appearance of this lovely place. The local street cleaners work hard to clean up, but we think it is time for everybody to do their bit!! In the week running up to June 4 we would ask families, friends, neighbours, shops, offices, and clubs to spend an hour or so picking up litter, on pavements, along the canal, on footpaths and in our play areas. Perhaps you could let us know about your cleaning efforts, send us a photo and tell us about the worst places. We would love to hear from you. TOGETHER WE CAN CLEAN UP WENDOVER AND BE PROUD OF OUR VILLAGE! PLEASE HELP US!

May Parish Council Meeting Election of Chair Nominating Councillor Bob Duggan for re-election as Chair of the Council, Councillor Marion Clayton said he had done ‘a fantastic job in extremely difficult circumstances over the past year.’ Elected unopposed, Councillor Duggan replied that he was ‘honoured to be Chair for a second year’ and hoped the forthcoming year would be ‘even more successful and enlightening.’

Vice Chair Standing down as Vice-Chair, Councillor Clayton nominated Counsillor Nicky Gregory who was also elected unopposed.

RAF Halton supports the Olympics Wing Commander Stephen Borthwick – Deputy Station Commander – told the meeting that RAF Halton was going to be hosting a large number of people involved with various aspects of the Games and would also be heavily involved with the Jubilee celebrations. In the meantime, training would continue as usual but with more reservists so the station was going to be ‘very busy’ which would hopefully be good news for local trade.

Brook House One of the longest-running local issues could possibly be drawing to a close with the latest planning applications for this neglected site.

In advance of the main meeting, the Parish Council’s Planning Committee considered proposals for the restoration of the derelict Brook House and the erection of one detached dwelling. Several interested members of the public expressed the view that the current proposals offered a better restoration option than those previously submitted and certainly compared with the present ‘terrible situation.’ Concerns were expressed relating to size, potential loss of light and overlooking neighbours, the need for a planting scheme and conserving trees subject to preservation orders. The Committee endorsed those views and will submit a response to AVDC planning.

HS2 Community Forums Changes have been announced in the structure of the Chiltern Community Forums to consider local effects of HS2 and how they might be mitigated. Following the first round of meetings various communities, including Wendover, made representations to HS2 Ltd about the boundaries. HS2 Ltd has responded by making a number of adjustments including the establishment of a Forum based on Wendover, Halton and Dunsmore. As well as bringing together affected communities with some common issues this will enable more organisations in the Wendover area to appoint a delegate to attend these important meetings.

Copy of letter to the Planning Inspectorate, re Coffee Snobs' appeal against the refusal of their proposal for a Change of use of the Barclays Bank Building Our over 400 members are overwhelmingly opposed to this development (an e-mail vote resulted in 94% opposed). Our principal grounds remain that both Sunday Trading and external seating would have significant detrimental impact on the neighbouring residential properties, contrary to local policy. There are only three vaguely comparable situations in Aylesbury Road; two Indian restaurants and one public house, and whilst they do trade on Sundays, none has external seating. In contradistinction to Coffee Snobs’ statement, we believe the Council’s refusal of the proposal on the above grounds to be, in fact, wholly reasonable. In addition we would like to point out that the applicants’ suggestion that their proposal to use the rear garden is based on their wide experience of similar situations is overstated. Of the seven properties listed on their website, we believe that few have rear seating areas, and even fewer are side by side with residential properties.

Clearly we would welcome investment in the building, but the owners are legally responsible for its proper maintenance, and have maintained it reasonably over the years. Coffee Snobs’ suggestion that approval would result in increased local employment may prove illusionary if existing local businesses find, as they fear, that the impact of a Costa Coffee franchise would force them to reduce their own staffing levels. Nor do we accept their unsubstantiated claim that approval of the appeal would “add to Wendover’s attractiveness”. There is limited parking nearby and traffic problems would also be caused by the twice daily deliveries envisaged. We would note that any attempt to trade off the proposed rear seating area in return for an outdoor seating area at the front of the property would be even less acceptable on grounds of both aesthetics and reduction of residential amenity. It would simply ruin one of the finest parts of Wendover’s Conservation Area containing fine eighteenth

century houses, good trees and grass verges. Nikolaus Pevsner called it “the piece of Wendover that one does not forget”.

Fresh from appearing on ITV1’s Dancing on Ice, the UK’s leading diet and fitness expert Rosemary Conley launches Kardy Laguda – an internationally-renowned exercise: her latest weapon in getting the nation fit. The brand-new Kardy-O-Fun class was launched in Aylesbury and run by Joanna Beardsmore-Dilks. Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Clubs is the only national slimming chain to include a workout as well as dietary advice in the same class. First Rosemary’s clubs championed Salsacise, then Zumba and now puts a new twist on aerobics by launching fat-burning, dance-based classes, Kardy-O-Fun, into her slimming clubs. KardyO-Fun is a new collaboration between Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Clubs and fitness performer Kardy. Their mission is to help transform the way people think about exercise to encourage everyone to stay fit in a fun way with a unique style of aerobics and dance. Rosemary says “Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week but we only stick to exercise if it is easy and fun. Kardy-O-Fun is an infectious, powerfully motivating, dance-based workout with simple movements choreographed in a fun way which can be followed by anyone of any age and ability. I challenge anyone looking to lose weight not to enjoy our Kardy-O-Fun classes.”

Adds Psychiatrist Dr Raj Persaud: “Research has shown, using dance in exercise is an effective way of motivating more people to take it up and helps them to stick to an exercise routine. It also helps to improve body image and, because it uses free expression, it helps to restore a sense of individual empowerment, capability and effectiveness.”

This is what some of our instructors and members say: “It's amazing that with a smile, some energy and some funky moves it is easy to get an electric atmosphere in class.”

“I don't know what's happening to me but I like it!!” “It is so simple you don't need to think too hard so you can put more physical effort in. The next day I could feel that I had used muscles that are usually left in peace!” –

“Listen out for the Kardy-O-Fun signature tune at the start of every class and enjoy a new and exciting way to improve fitness, burn fat and calories and have fun exercising to music. This is one exercise class you will stick to.” See advert below:

Town Exchange weekend 28 April to 1 May 2012 Thank you to Councillor Duggan for welcoming the 30 adults and 3 children to a short reception at the Youth Centre. We all met up later at St Anne’s Hall for a very lively evening of fish and chips, music by Bill and Barbara McGillivray and a picture quiz. Our outing to Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey was a resounding success and our visitors were very impressed by the whole experience, especially the land-train tour around the vineyard and of course the wine tasting. It was good to show the French that we too can produce excellent wines. Monday, the sunny day, was a day for hosts and guests to do their own thing. We had several new hosts this year and the French party included a number of visitors here for the first time – and they all loved the experience and hope to come back. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank everyone who hosted and who contributed towards making this a most enjoyable weekend for everyone. We’ll be going to Liffré next year, for what we know will be an equally fun weekend so if you’d like to join any of the numbers below:

Barbara Jefford (01296 624708), Glynis Smith (0296 625565),

Mike Greaves (01296 622778).

Wendover Youth Club Volunteers We are always looking for volunteers to help at our youth club on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings 7—9pm, even if you are only able to help out once a month. Wendover Swimming Association The new membership year will start on 1 July and existing members will receive a request for membership renewal during June. Your committee have again kept the subscriptions and the swimming charges at the same price and, as always, the money we raise is used to contribute to the costs of running the Wendover Pool and keeping it open. At the AGM for last year, the membership agreed that you would like to hear more from the committee and so we have started sending out emails to members, around once a month, to keep you up to date with what is going on. The committee apologises to those members who do not have access to email,

but we shall continue to keep you up to date through Wendover News. The committee looks forward to welcoming back regular members and to introducing new members to the Wendover Pool.

Wendover Cricket Club The weather has caused severe disruption to the early part of Wendover Cricket Club’s season, with the first 9 junior games all being cancelled or postponed and 3 out of 7 senior games called off. Practices have also been affected although most have gone ahead and been well attended. The 2nd XI opened their Mid Bucks League campaign with a close 3 wicket win over Frieth in Division 2 on 5 May. The visitors were restricted to 120 for 4 off 35 overs, with Jonathan Seabrook taking 3 for 56. In reply, Charles Deer looked well set until he got out for 28 but a string of rash shots saw Wendover slump to 57 for 7. However Ollie Hogg 43* and the young Max Wilkinson 16* (on his senior debut) batted sensibly and took full advantage of the change bowlers. Hogg’s 3 sixes helped to raise the tempo to achieve victory by 3 wickets and 4 overs to spare, whilst adding an undefeated 64 for the 8th wicket. On 6 May, Little Marlow struggled to 112 all out off 44 overs as the spinners wreaked the

damage on a blameless pitch – Jonathan Seabrook 3 for 5, Matt Robinson 2 for 10 and Joel Heritage 2 for 24. Wendover’s openers responded in style with George Robinson 50 and James Wootton 43* racing to a 9 wicket victory in only 16 overs. The 1st XI won their first match against Bradenham in the Mid Bucks League Premier Division by 6 wickets on 12 May. Wendover made early inroads with Jon Green and Tom Cornick each taking 2 wickets. David Gulliver also claimed 2 wickets as Bradenham’s innings closed on 147 all out. In reply, James Harrington batted steadily for 49 before he was run out. Will Ebsworth accelerated with 5 fours and 2 sixes in his 41 and Tom McKee 29* guided Wendover to a comfortable victory. The 2nd XI had a torrid time with the bat after losing the toss at Widmer End and slumped to 34 for 9 off 20 overs. However a defiant 10th wicket partnership of 36 between Jonathan Seabrook 19 and 14 year old Connor Cox 8* playing his first game of cricket, showed much needed fight until the last wicket fell in the 44th over. 70 was never likely to be defendable, even with McPartland grabbing a wicket in the first over. Andy Glazebrook proved to be the best bowler with 2 wickets for 4 off 6 overs, but Widmer End eased home by 6 wickets.

Early Village Cup results include: Wellhead Old Boys 282 beat Charlies Angels 234; Sharkeys Sharks 257 beat Tradesmen 251; Dragons 319 beat Pretenders 239; FC Olduns 280 beat Halton Tennis 247; Dragons 281 beat Halton Tennis 246; Jolly Boys 253 beat Pretenders 207. New players of any age and ability are always welcome and should contact Club Captain Jonathan Seabrook on 01296-623286 for more information.

Wendover Tennis and Squash Club The annual Tennis Tournaments for both Juniors and Seniors are now well under way culminating in Finals Day on 14 July. The inclement Spring weather has meant that we have enjoyed an extended Squash and Raquetball season. The coaching teams are running Tennis and Squash camps over the Spring half term, for details go to www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk.

Charity Bags I am not sure about other streets in Wendover, but mine keeps getting charity bags through the letterbox for clothes collections. The logos on the bags make each look like it belongs to well know UK Cancer Charity but these are actually for charities which are registered elsewhere. These organisations give a fixed amount to a charity per month and as they are registered abroad, do not share their accounts and how much profits they make. As you may be aware, in the press recently, there have been reports on these foreign companies having tonnes of material which is worth a lot of

money. I would hate for the residents of Wendover to be duped into giving to these "charities" thinking it is 100% going to a worthy cause. I have reported this to advertising standards online (as the logos are misleading). Does anyone have any ideas how we can make sure these donations go to fully regulated UK charities? See link below for some newspaper investigation into this matter.

St Mary’s Celebrates 2012 St Mary’s Church would like to thank all those who supported the Fes t iva l o f Flowers, Music and Art held during the May Bank Holiday weekend. In spite of poor weather conditions over the three days, hundreds of people enjoyed the many activities and events which accompanied the spectacular flower displays which had a Jubilee or an Olympic theme. A highlight of the Festival was the Big Band Concert by the Aylesbury Music Centre.

We really are immensely grateful to all friends, volunteers, exhibitors and supporters. The event raised in the region of £7,000 for the Refurbishment Fund. Donations are still welcomed to complete the funding of the project; details can be found on www.stmaryswendover.org.uk We wish everyone in Wendover joy and blessings for their Jubilee celebrations.

Brook House This once handsome dwelling has for over twenty years been ever more quickly deteriorating and the high profile site within the Conservation Area is now a blot on Wendover. A new planning application has at last been published that promises to rectify this. It is for two 5-bedroomed dwellings, plus garaging. One of the dwellings is to incorporate as much as is now possible of the existing house (so not a lot, but at least something). The developer’s proposals specifically include working methods safeguards (e.g. use of hand tools) to ensure that such incorporation will work. We have concerns about the scale of the second building as being potentially overbearing and its siting too close to the neighbouring properties. We hope that the District Council or its Planning Officers will be able to secure some amelioration in these respects. Provided this can be done, we believe we should acknowledge that now dealing with the site in this way can only be good for Wendover and would help to restore some much-needed charm to this corner of central Wendover.

Carewatch (Mid Bucks)

13a South Street, Wendover HP22 6EF

Tel: 01296 625385

[email protected]

Carewatch provides services to a wide range of individuals in the community; assisting with any personal care needs,

domestic care needs, companionship or relief care for regular carers.

If you need some help, Carewatch is what you’re looking for. We really do care.

Steve was born in 1979 in the Royal Bucks Hospital in Aylesbury where he and his older brother and sister attended Ashmead Combined School, then Mandeville Upper. He continued his education at Aylesbury College, studying sports science and attaining a number of sports coaching awards. His special interest was basketball, playing at County level until the age of 18. Steve has always had a passion for music and since 18 has been a DJ in his spare time. During college he worked at the Guttmann Sports and Leisure centre as duty manager volunteering for the world wheelchair games was an amazing privilege. After college Steve decided to re-direct his career and accepted a position as trainee manager of a national chain of restaurants called Brewers Fayre and within one year was holding manager for the Charter in Aylesbury. In 2000 he took a new position at the Bugle Horn in Stone Vintage Inns and during his time with this company he became a relief manager for South Area travelling to many different pubs and restaurants, before ending up at the Firecrest in Wendover, which is where he met his future wife Ami.

In 2003 Steve left Vintage Inns and became the Deputy Manager of the Chicago Rock Café in Aylesbury. It was during this time that he and Ami decided to settle down with her beautiful little boy called Reece who was only 3. He wanted to look for a more family friendly job and in 2004 became the manager of a hire company in Aylesbury which he hated from the word go. In 2005 he became a service engineer for Panache Fire Services, which was a much more enjoyable job and on 31 January 2006 Ami and Steve became the proud parents of Baby Bethany (aka Princess Bethany) but shortly after that he was made redundant due to company cut backs. In 2007 the Shoulder of Mutton was looking for a relief manager, so Steve took on this position. From 2008 he was employed as the manager for the Total Service Station in Berkhamsted and worked there until he and Ami were married in May 2010. On returning from honeymoon Steve started a new post at HKS in Wendover as the manager. It was at this time he decided enough was enough and that it was time to start doing something for themselves, so they took a brave leap into the unknown and

started The Coffee Stop. Steve left his day job and took an evening one as a grill chef until the business was financially secure. “It has been hard work but very rewarding and enjoyable and I am glad to say we have been in business one year and are very excited about year 2, but I could not have done any of this without Ami,” says Steve. This last year has really pulled them into the community as Steve is a Member of Wendover District Round Table, Resident DJ for both the John Hampden and Wendover Junior Schools, and currently Head of the Entertainment Committee for Wendover Celebrates. This involved organising a Battle of the Bands in Wendover Memorial Hall in March and booking the line up for the evening entertainment. “Things are pretty hectic at the moment but quality of life is at its best, and if I was to choose one person from the whole world who inspires me, it would be my wife!”

and Ami Lewsley June 2012 www.wendover-news.co.uk 23

Ami Higgins was born in High Wycombe in 1983 and lived in Amersham with her family. At the age of 10 they moved to Wendover where she attended Wendover Junior and then John Colet. She never took school seriously and two weeks after turning 16 fulfilled her ambition of becoming a mother. Reece was born on December 26 2000 so Ami started the journey of motherhood and has not looked back since. Whilst focusing on being a mum as her main priority she always tried to maintain her independence, so from 17 she worked on and off at the Firecrest which is where she met Steve. Ami then worked part-time in Crumbs. She made some great friends there and for some time it became her second home. Bora’s passion for serving the finest coffee and his strict instructions on how dishes should be washed have stayed with her and have inspired her to do what she is doing now….working with coffee and constantly cleaning! Once baby Bethany was born Ami began to think about her future and what path to take careerwise. She considered many roles including the police but they were not recruiting so needing some stimulation she studied

for a diploma in Criminology from home and proudly gained a distinction…her first proper qualification at the age of 25! Shortly after marrying Steve, they decided to become business partners too. So in 2011 they set up The Coffee Stop: mobile coffee specialists. Although this has been hard work it has been their most fun ever. Ami says: “It has been said that we must be nuts working and living together but not at all. I am crazy in love with Steve and adore that we have built a business together, one that so far is busy and successful”. As a local business they have had the pleasure of attending many events including The Chiltern Hills Vintage Vehicle Rally, Bedgrove Party In The Park, Mix 96 Fireworks Bonanza and many more. They also work with local schools, Aylesbury Rugby Club, Wendover Football Club and provide refreshments for many Iain Rennie Hospice fundraising events…the main one being the Three Peaks Challenge.

They have a really busy summer ahead to include the most talked about u p c o m i n g e v e n t … . W e n d o v e r Celebrates. They are not only supplying

specialist coffee but are also on the committee organising it. Ami is the mainstay o f t he ca ter ing committee making sure there will be plenty of quality food available for what promises to be one of the most exciting events ever held in Wendover.

One of Ami’s proudest moments so far was her son Reece recently passing his 11+ and gaining a place in Aylesbury Grammar School. "Reece’s academic achievements have more than made up for what mine lacked." This year is busy and exciting although it started badly with both Ami’s and Steve’s mums being diagnosed with cancer. For this reason Ami is running the race for life on 24 June, so if anyone would like to support this lifesaving cause and sponsor her please visit this page

View From the Chair After a lengthy absence off sick our Clerk Fiona Lippmann has now resigned. Short of a few loose ends to be sorted out we will be embarking on advertising for a new Clerk. At the recent Annual Parish meeting the Chairman was unanimously re-elected and the vice Chair is now Nicky Gregory who was also unanimously elected. The four committees, Finance and General, Amenities, Planning and Staffing will all elect chairs when they meet for the first time in the next few weeks. Hopefully the business in year two of your Parish Council will be somewhat smoother to deal with than in year one. Good luck to Wendover Celebrates – taking place on June 4 2012; The Parish Council has been involved in one way or another, my congratulations and good luck to councillors and staff who have been involved at different times. The whole committee deserves our support. Hopefully this event will develop and evolve in future years. Maybe next year we can re-instate the Village Show with a vegetable competition and dog show. Ideas are always welcome but we need to be thinking of things now, if we are to consider them for next year.

Greener Street Lighting Your parish council is putting together a programme that should see a noticeable and positive change to Wendover's streetlights. The sodium lamps we currently use to light our streets are both energy hungry and high maintenance. The proposal is to develop a rolling program, over four to five years, that will see all of the village’s lamps converted to LED. The benefits of LED lighting include greatly reduced energy usage, reduced maintenance cost, greater lamp longevity and a large reduction in light pollution. Wendover will once again be able to stargaze safe in the knowledge that this green project will save us all a few quid. Samples of the lights we will use are installed on a column on the footpath alongside the Library and the column behind the library in the Witchell. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Green Refuse Sacks AVDC is in the process of introducing brown garden waste wheelie bins. As a result the green garden waste sacks are being discontinued. The current stock at the Clock Tower has run out, but we are trying to source a further supply from AVDC which we hope will enable us to supply green sacks until September. They are also currently available from AVDC at 66 High Street, Aylesbury.

Nature Note It is not a commonly known fact that all nesting birds are protected by law between the months of March and September. It is illegal to interfere in any way, e.g. hedging, tree felling/lopping and high scaffolding on buildings are all included.

Wendover Action Group A grant of £1000 has been awarded to WAG who operate the Wendover Community Car. WAG is a very worthwhile charity who provides a service enabling residents with difficulty getting about to enjoy the freedom of travel. They do not charge for their se r v i ces b u t p ass e ng ers a r e encouraged to contribute towards the running costs. Should you wish to help out as a volunteer driver please contact the WAG coordinator on 01296 317769

Best Kept Village Competition Because of the refurbishment of the Manor Waste and other ongoing projects in the Village it has been decided to wait until 2013 to enter the Best Kept Village Competition. We hope to involve as many Societies and Groups as possible and include schools, shops and businesses. We are looking for support now for an anti-litter campaign in the hope good habits will ensure Wendover always looks its best.
