Wendover Celebrates, Team of Directors Please apply by Thursday 7 March 2013 Wendover Celebrates organised the Wendover Jubilee and Olympic celebrations on Monday 4 June 2012. We want to carry on that success with another event in 2014. This will require a lot of hard work and we need more people to share the workload.

Wendover Celebrates is a not for profit Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee and needs more directors. Directors are responsible for the day to day running of the

company, meeting legal requirements and strategic decision making. Experience required includes, but is not limited to: sales, marketing, corporate fundraising, site management and website administration.

Directors must be able to commit to the organisation in the months leading up to an event. The current committee members already volunteer much of their spare time to local organisations. It is time for new faces from the community to make a mark and continue the 2012 legacy. It is vital that new people step up as we risk not having enough manpower to organise or manage future events without more help.

If you are interested in becoming a Director of the Company, please email : [email protected] BY MARCH 7 2013. Please state why you would like to join and what skills you would bring to the team. You will be sent an application form and a fact sheet with more details about the role.

Chiltern MS ART Exhibition Saturday 9 March 10am-6pm Sunday 10 March 11am-4pm Chilterns MS Centre, Oakwood Close, Wendover, HP22 5LX 01296 696133 e-mai l : info@chi l ternsmscentre.org. This, our 8th annual exhibition is the first one to be held in our new building. We will have the works of about 100 artists, both local and not so local, using various media. The artists display a wide range of subject matters and skills, ranging from recreational to professional. Some are patients at the Centre, some are friends and relations and some just keen to support the event and show their art in the process. Most of the exhibits are sold with a percentage going to the Centre, but some are donated. The starting price last year was £10, post cards and prints of the originals are available in some cases. There is a sale of teas, coffees and delicious homemade cakes which may taste even better after a walk in neighbouring Wendover Woods. As in previous years we are well supported by many local businesses and individuals for which we are very grateful. We hope you will take the opportunity to come and see both the artwork and view the excellent facilities at our new centre.

Events pastoral support is vital for their wellbeing. In pioneering work with the British Humanist Association and the Prison Service, Amy has assembled the first team of Humanist advisers to operate inside a prison. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Just come along.

Look forward to something special Sunday 17 March, 6pm, St Mary’s Church Are you ready for a good laugh? The age of the Silent Movie is well and truly past and now we go to the cinema often to be transported to unbelievable worlds of fantasy and imagination. However, if you sometimes yearn for the simpler things in life, you may well enjoy an evening of pure talent and the chance to see Buster Keaton’s classic comedy ‘THE GENERAL’ featuring live improvised piano accompaniment from Adrian Johnson. Adrian is a well known pianist who has worked all over Britain, but recently had the experience of playing for a season of Buster Keaton films at the Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted. He provided live improvised music to several films which he had never seen until the actual performance. It was electrifying! Adrian said afterwards, ‘this is what I was born for. It was scary but I enjoyed it more than anything I have ever done.’ Some people will remember Adrian from the concert a year ago by Bill Houghton entitled ‘Trumpets and Other things’. Tea and cakes of the period will be served from 5.30 - 6 pm when the film will start. There will be a short interval after 45 minutes when you can purchase popcorn and sweets from our attractive Usherettes followed by the conclusion of the film. Tickets are £7.50 and can be bought from Wendover Clock Tower. There will be limited tickets at the door.

Events Fancy a long weekend in France? The members of Wendover Twinning Association will be hosted this year by our friends in Liffré. We’ll be staying with families, living their lifestyle, eating their food and drinking their wine (always a great pleasure). I know they’re in the throes of sorting out a weekend of great entertainment for us and, based on past experience, it should be an action-packed and fun weekend. We’ll be staying an extra day this year, leaving Wendover on the afternoon of Thursday 23 May, travelling overnight and arriving in Liffré the following morning. Our return will be on Monday 27 May, with an e.t.a. of midnight. Most families have someone who speaks English and there is always somebody around to help out the less confident so don’t let a lack of the language put you off an excellent way to learn more about the French and dispel the myths put about by the media that they don’t like us. They do! If you would like to participate or just know more about what is involved please contact us at one of the following numbers: Barbara 01296 624708, Glynis 01296 625565, Mike 01296 622778

Know your blood pressure Thursday 25 April, 10am – 3pm, Wendover Library Room Do you have high blood pressure? Do you know what your blood pressure is? One of the major causes of strokes is high blood pressure. Strokes lead to deaths, and serious disabilities and can occur at any age. In many cases a change of diet can reduce blood pressure. Medication can also help some people. The Rotary Club of Wendover and District has arranged for qualified staff to be at Wendover Library Room from 10am until 3pm to take your blood pressure and provide tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits all for free. Do yourself a favour. Know your blood pressure.

Wendover is now part of the Chiltern Foodbank which is organised through the Trussell Trust and this branch is located in Chesham. The distribution for Wendover and the surrounding area is on Tuesday mornings between 10am and 12noon in the Wendover Christian Centre, Aylesbury Road, HP22 6JG, opposite Wharf Road. Distribution in Wendover starts on Tuesday 12 March and every Tuesday thereafter. Supplies can only be collected in exchange for vouchers which are obtainable from referral partners as suggested below. If you want to benefit from the Chiltern Foodbank you need to contact a care professional such as a doctor, health visitor, social worker or Citizens Advice Bureau. Foodbank clients bring their vouchers to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a hot drink and will signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem. Churches Together in Wendover has already started collecting food and other essentials. Unopened non perishable food donations (please check expiry dates) are very welcome on the first Sunday of each month at the churches.

Look out for posters around Wendover. More details from http://www.chiltern.foodbank.org.uk

Do you have a passion for gardening? The Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance’s Open Garden Scheme has become a huge success since its inception in 2002. The fundraising team is asking for volunteers to help them coordinate this fantastic initiative across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The current scheme co-ordinators are now looking to mentor new co-ordinators in Oxon and Bucks as the Charity makes Open Gardens even more of a success in the future. If you would like to help. please contact Sarah Williamson on: [email protected] or telephone: 0300 999 0135.

Spring in the garden After another winter of snow it is great to anticipate the warmer temperatures and the arrival of spring. From mid March the lawn starts to grow stimulated by the warmer weather. This is the time to start mowing your lawn. Depending on the health of your lawn, it may also need spring feeding, moss killing and weeding. The benefit of feeding the lawn with a lawn fertiliser in mid spring is that it encourages the lawn to produce a well-developed, healthy root system. This should produce a healthier lawn that will grow more vigorously and be more resistant to the establishment of weeds and moss. With regards to moss, there are a number of reasons moss appears in lawns, eg lack of lawn vigour, worn out areas of turf due to over use, wet weather and water logged areas, mowing too closely and lawn trying to grow in shaded areas especially beneath trees. If moss has established in the lawn Spring is a good time to deal with it. A way of doing this is to apply a spring fertiliser and moss killer to the lawn during fine weather in mid to late March.

you require new batteries for your NHS hearing aid please contact the original supplier; you will either be able to collect batteries directly from them or make arrangements for them to be posted (free of charge) to you. If your hearing aid was not provided by the NHS please contact the supplier or buy batteries from a chemist.

Myths about losing weight A recent article in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine refuted several “false and scientif ically unsupported beliefs about obesity (that) are pervasive in both scientific literature and the popular press". Some of the most striking are:

Small sustained changes in food

intake and/or exercise will result in large weight changes in the long term — This does not take into account the fact that energy requirements change as body mass changes over time; as weight is lost, it takes increasingly more exercise and/or reduced food

intake to lose more weight.

Slow, gradual weight loss is best for

long-term success — Studies have demonstrated that very-low-calorie diets result in significantly more weight loss than low-calorie diets (16% vs 10% of body weight) at 6 months, and differences in weight loss persist up to 18 months. (But seek medical advice before starting a very-low-calorie diet.)

A bout of sexual activity burns 100 to

300 kcal per person — Calculating actual energy expenditure during sex gives an estimated total of 14 kcals of extra energy expended! However, sustained, intensive physical activity will result in significant energy expenditure and can aid weight loss, and has other health benefits.

Changes to our usual Opening Hours We will close at 1pm on Wednesday 13 March for staff training. We will be closed on Good Friday 29 March, Saturday 30 March – and on Easter Monday 1 April 2013.

It’s Bendy up North Thanks to all who sent in compensation consultation responses. The outcome of the judicial review held in December is awaited. We have no information as to when; keep an eye on the news. Expect appeals and our appeals for more money. This remains our best way of attacking the dubious logic of the scheme.

The only January announcement was the Northern route, known as the Y. One amusing feature was the “Osborne Bend”. You’ll recall that HS2 has to pass straight through Wendover as curves reduce speed and speed is all. Not in Cheshire, where the route follows a convoluted tight S-bend around Knutsford. This avoids HS2 trashing some of the wealthiest and most scenic areas of Osborne’s constituency. George had nothing to do with this, naturally. We await the Lidington diversion. The accountants are obviously getting worried as the document has several references to extra financial contributions from local authorities and airports. Maybe having to pay for HS2 will concentrate minds up north. The Y arms are now giving us new allies. Bill Cash, a formidable MP, has started asking questions since the line runs through his Staffordshire constituency with no benefit - sounds familiar. New protest groups are starting up and we will support these where we can. The government is increasingly defensive about HS2. No new financial Y model was released, although the Northern cost rose and the Heathrow link is withdrawn whilst the confused “thinking” on rail and air is sorted. The Y press coverage was more balanced often describing HS2 as “controversial”. Donate £5+/mth by standing order to save Wendover! Contact Antony Chapman on 01296 623730 ([email protected]).

No2 Pound Street With the snow behind us No2 is bursting with energy and life as we welcome in the Spring. Starting on 1 March and for the whole weekend we will be celebrating Wales on the back of St David’s Day. Wales is truly championing food and drink at the moment and as a retailer there is a wealth of choice when it comes to selecting suppliers from Wales. We have kept a solid relationship with many since the beginning and a few new suppliers have found their way in more recently. Firm favourites have always been Trealys Farm ~ fennel salami and air dried beef, Gorwydd Caerphilly ~ gold award winner in the World Cheese Awards and Caws Cenarth ~ Golden Cenarth supreme champion in British Cheese Awards and plenty more. Newcomers this season are Ancre Hills Vineyard for their world class wines, Cwnd for seasonal meat and fish smoked, cured and Patchwork Pates.

Celebrating Mothering Sunday couldn’t be easier, there will be plenty of gift ideas starting with The Lawn Collection. A beautifully selected range of teas, created with love to taste second to none. The notion behind The Lawn Collection is to create teas to bring you back to our classic English garden and encourage you to take time out to enjoy your infusion. The Lawn will be at No2 on Saturday 9 March 2013 between 10am and 2pm. Sniff, slurp and taste to your heart’s content, but we are confident you will find a flavour or two to indulge in. And our timing is purposeful as we think The Lawn Collection makes the ideal Mother’s Day gift.

Do you have any ideas for new products that you would like No2 to stock? Drop us a line to [email protected], all entries will be entered into a prize draw for a bottle of No2 champagne.

Russell Arms For 364 days a year Mum thinks of everyone else before herself, so this Mothering Sunday, make sure you put Mum first. Book a table at Russell Arms and indulge her with a traditional three course Sunday roast. That way, no-one has to cook and there will be no fighting over who is doing the washing up ~ happy days. Chef and his team are busily sourcing the finest local meats for your roast and creating a menu fit for a queen. To learn more call 01296 624411 or visit russellarms.co.uk. There will be a little gift for mum on each table (so as to avoid any awkwardness ~ please let us know if your booking has more than one mum on the table).

From Tuesday 12 March 2013 The Lawn Afternoon Tea will be launched at Russell Arms. A decadent treat for the afternoon. The tea menu will include specialities from The Lawn Collection including Rose Garden, Rhubarb Patch, Royal Tea, as well as other loose leaf teas including Rubbed Mint, Fresh Mint, Camomile Flowers and Jasmine and for those of you who like a strong tea, there will be a Builders Brew. The afternoon tea will be accompanied by a delicious pick ‘n’ mix foodie offering, of finger sandwiches, scones and cream, cakes and other goodies, not to mention a recommendation of a glass of No2 Champagne. Reservations recommended.

This Easter at Russell Arms we are going family fantastic, we have so many ideas at the moment, we are trying to squish them all into the one weekend! Keep an eye on the plans as they come together at www.russellarms.co.uk or follow us on facebook for up to the minute info and offers.

Victor John Fletcher was born on 12 May 1918 in Midhurst, Easebourne, West Sussex finally living in Wendover for 45 years. He firmly believed in serving his locality and encouraging an interest in Church at the same time. For a number of years he delivered Wendover News to Coombe Avenue, where he lived, and the Church Newsletter at the same time. He certainly enjoyed and appreciated the annual ‘get together’ hosted by the Wendover News team for the volunteer deliverers. He also supported the RNLI (Lifeboats) and each year collected for them around Coombe Avenue. Vic, as he was commonly known, took Matriculation at 18, which was then the minimum requirement for University entry, but he could not afford to go, so went to work instead. He was advised to apply for a post in the Government Civil Service and started work in 1936 at RAE Farnborough. He served there for 3 years until 1939 and then was in the RAF for 6 years – training pilots on how to use their radios. Vic met his future wife around 1933 – a Midhurst girl who came from the other side (Bepton). He was confirmed around 1934 in Midhurst Church. He married Marie Follett on 9 May 1942 at one of the darkest times of the war – but it turned out sunny for them both!

The couple had a daughter and two sons. After the war Vic returned to the Civil Service as an Executive Officer (EO) at Farnborough and then was moved to the Rocket Propulsion Establishment at Westcott around Christmas 1949, which brought about the move to Southcourt, Aylesbury. They came to live in Wendover in 1967 and remained here with Vic commuting to London for 13 years retiring in 1977 with the Queens Jubilee medal. Vic continued to serve St Mary’s Church and ran a Bible study group for 25 years. He enjoyed digging into the Bible and making copious notes which he shared with the group. He wrote several ‘papers’ for the group including one on his thoughts on why God may have made the Universe. Vic was a member of the Wendover Deanery Synod for a good number of years and therefore also a member of St Mary’s PCC. He supported the Gideons in their distribution of Bibles to schools, prisons, hospitals, hotels, and so on. He loved living in Wendover with its easy access to London by train, easy access to the Chiltern Hills on foot and a good selection of shops and other facilities. Vic passed away on 15 December 2012.

Coupled with the sadness at the passing of Tony Tyson, aged 92, is a real sense of gratitude for all he contributed to the life and growth of St Mary’s. Soon after nursing his wife through a long and painful battle with cancer, Tony experienced quite a dramatic conversion to Christ. One afternoon he sensed a compulsion to walk to the church in the village and there, as he described it, he had a wonderful encounter with God. He joined St Mary’s Church. It was while Tony was on duty at an Open Day at St Mary’s, that the beautiful Aileen wandered into the churchyard. The gallant Tony stepped forward to be her guide and thus began a courtship which led to their happy and fulfilling marriage. Following a marriage blessing at St Mary’s, Tony and Aileen lived at 9 Pound Street. Tony was elected to the PCC and served as Church Warden. He and others were instrumental in planning and building the new Vicarage in Dobbins Lane. Over a number of years Tony and Aileen led Home Bible Study Group and also conducted Communion Services in Abbeyfield House and The Poplars. Behind the scenes he was always ready to welcome visitors and encourage others. Tony spent much of his formative years in France - (see Wendover News Local Face March 2008). He used his fluency in French in the Wendover Twinning activities and in the U3A. Tony acted a number of times with the famous Brian Rix. He was a noted Historian and also quite an expert on the computer. Tony passed away peacefully in Wycombe General Hospital on Tuesday 6 November 2012.

Lady Grey Tea Room, located in the pretty Barn Courtyard, behind Antiques at Wendover, will celebrate its first birthday on 14 March 2013.

Its first year can only be described as a total success, even though this involved a complete career change and massive learning curve for the proprietors, Amanda and Jennifer. Wendover embraced and welcomed us, which made it a lot easier. Our first challenge was to carry out a major refurbishment of the small premises. We wanted the tea shop to be warm and welcoming and constructed a wall, moved the kitchen area and put up a stunning chandelier. During the year we have marked various events, with a window display for the Olympics, Pudsey, Poppy and Ghost cupcakes, etc. We held a Christmas party for Aylesbury Young Carers. We have made cakes for birthdays, christenings and weddings. We have created a beautiful outside area — in fact, we can even say our tree has a face!! A big reward has been getting to know our customers and sharing their life experiences. We have met new babies, shared birthdays, exam success and house moves.

Our ethos is to supply delicious fresh home made cakes, all made by Amanda and Jennifer. Our repertoire over the year has grown. Now if you pop in you are likely to see a lemon meringue cake beside a raspberry and lime drizzle torte. It still makes us smile when the customers walk in and say “wow”. Everyone seems to enjoy the ritual of running through the cakes, the room always falls silent then an ohh, a groan, a chuckle, and “I don’t know what to have”. We also supply lots of savoury dishes, our most popular has to be the sausage rolls which we are told by many “they are the best”! Customers enjoyed pitchers of iced tea in the summer and comforting mulled tea in the winter, all made using our blends of loose tea. We strive to deliver things that are a little different and varied. What does 2013 hold for Lady Grey? We hope much of the same but better. The biggest compliment our customers can pay us is to come back and . . . they do . . . generally with their friends and family.

The Governors of the John Colet Academy and the Committee of the Wendover Swimming Association make the following announcement. The boilers which heat the water at the Wendover Pool failed last summer which meant the John Colet School had to close the pool in autumn 2012 because of the low water temperature. The School has made a detailed review of the repairs required including installing new boilers and repairing the air heater. The immediate cost to make the pool usable is approximately £20,000 and the anticipated repairs needed over the next five years are estimated to cost £90,000. The running costs of the pool are around £40,000 per year in addition to this. The Governors and the Committee agree that even if the money could be raised to make repairs this year, doing so would be a waste of the School’s and the members’ money if the level of running costs and repairs mean that the pool cannot be kept open beyond 2013.

The WSA’s contribution to the pool costs and income from swimming clubs amounts to around £12,000 each year. Currently, the School receives a grant of approximately £17,000 per year from Buckinghamshire County Council to assist with the running costs of the pool. However, this grant will cease for all Buckinghamshire schools which have a pool from September 2013 so there will be a shortfall of around £28,000 per year on running the Wendover Pool.

The John Colet School Governors add: Given the withdrawal of the swimming pool grant and with likely further reductions in Government funding in future, it is important that we use school funds to support the curriculum.

Swimming is not a compulsory activity on the secondary curriculum; therefore we have to think very carefully about any actions that could be detrimental to the rest of the school. We have fantastic sporting facilities including the multi-use games area, four football pitches and the sports hall, which are available for community use outside of school hours.

We are currently working with the WSA to look at the options for the pool. A conclusion will need to be reached by May half term, as all budgets and curriculum planning needs to have been finalised by then for the forthcoming academic year. We are proud of our strong links with the community and are working hard to reach a workable conclusion.

The Wendover Swimming Association Committee comments: WSA appreciate that the school must prioritise its spending and recognise that the running and repair costs of the pool will become unaffordable once the County grant stops in the autumn. If the repairs are not made, to the boilers at least, then the Pool cannot re-open. This would be an enormous pity, particularly as the Pool was originally built by the community itself. The Governors have asked WSA whether the community could do more to operate the pool and make it significantly cheaper to run and to repair.

So, we are asking the members of the WSA and the wider community what you would like to see happen now. Please contact us with your views, comments, suggestions and any offers of support as soon as possible, by email to: [email protected].

Thank you I have been amazed and heartened by the response to my Independent Councillor letter. Thank you. One of the supportive phone calls asked about loss or gain in councillor influence. My response was that ‘influence’ is a funny old thing. I personally have no time for some councillors who attend political group meetings and unquestioningly support the leadership line. To me this is an act of surrendering influence not an application of it. The influence a councillor has with council officers remains the same as long as one has done one’s homework, irrespective of party affiliation.

Most people forget that political influence should be a shared effort to be most effective. As an example, in the February edition of Wendover News, Leona Wheals updated the community on her efforts to reinstate a play area for children at Barlow Road, a site owned by AVDC which is likely to be sold for development. (Some advice given by the Council’s advisors is that modern playground standards preclude the reinstatement of the previous playground).

Leona asked “Is AVDC going to take this community asset away and simply run with the money or will they put something back?” The AVDC Cabinet will be making the final decision on March 12 but it is worth noting

that they acknowledge there are insufficient play facilities nearby. I urge readers and the 489 people who signed Leona’s petition to inform the Council of their views. This may not have an immediate impact but would be noted by the Cabinet and would give Leona a very public expression of support. This is what influence is all about.

Cllr Chris Richards

Dobbins Lane Never mind weekend parking, what about the weekday parking on the double yellow lines outside No2 Pound Street during the week?

I live at the far end of Dobbins Lane and have to walk along the disgusting foot path. Last autumn, leaves were never cleared away and they get slippery underfoot when it is wet, and very dangerous for walkers. The overgrown hedges make the pavements too narrow to walk along. Don’t home owners have to keep their hedges in check? Is there nothing that the local council can do?

M. Lane

Through gritted teeth? Why are there are no grit bins in and around Vinetrees? Several residents are elderly and some have mobility scooters and can’t go out because the roads and paths are so dangerous. I have found it hard not to slip over. Surely there should be some grit bins? I have personally witnessed elderly people

Hampden Pond We are a couple of anglers who regularly fish at the Hampden Pond and are appalled at the lack of maintenance. We are aged 42 and 18. The bushes and trees are clogging up the pond and we have seen dead birds hanging in the trees caught in the fishing line which has been hanging there for some years. “They” seem to be keen to take peoples’ money but not so keen to spend it on maintaining the pond.

We took the line away ourselves along with a lot of other line and loose hooks left on the ground and in the bushes. If nothing is done about this, we will be forced to go elsewhere. We have spoken to other anglers who fish there and they are also disgusted at the state of the pond.

Graceful fund raiser Whilst on holiday in June, my father was taken ill and airlifted to Truro hospital by the Devon & Cornwall Air Ambulance but sadly did not survive. The Air Ambulance gave him the very best chance as they do for so many others and this got my 7 year old daughter Grace thinking. She has decided to donate all her tooth fairy and pocket money to this charity and has hand made cards which she has sold to family and friends to raise extra money. At the moment Grace has raised £20 but is hoping to raise lots more and her family want to tell her just how very proud of her we are.

You’ve been putting it off, haven’t you?

Wendover Wills Week 2013 runs from Sunday 3 March to Saturday 9 March. “What is Wendover Wills Week?” Quite simply, Stuart Fantham & Company Wendover Wills Week is the ideal opportunity for you to spend a little time, a little money and a lot of thought into putting a Will in place. This is the third year that Wendover Wills Week has featured as part of the legal services offered by Stuart Fantham & Company who of course, write Wills all year round but recognise that we all lead busy lives and there is often a far more pressing work commitment or other reason why an opportunity to sit down and put a Will in place simply doesn’t arise. Stuart Fantham & Company is open for the full 7 days, from 7am until 7pm from 3 to 9 March including Saturday and Sunday, just to make themselves available so that you can find time for an appointment either when the children are at school, after school, after work or just at the weekend when there might be more time available. The “Working 9 to 5” mentality goes out of the window! We all know that we do need to get around to writing our Will at some time

and that, in truth, we all do need a Will. It’s just that we need something like Wendover Wills Week to make it even easier to set up. “My family know what I want ….” - if you don’t write a Will, the Law (rather than your family) will decide who takes care of your affairs and who gets what. You will be what is known as “intestate” and you should not make assumptions about who will effectively inherit your worldly goods. “I don’t need a Will yet….” – none of us knows quite what is “around the corner” and, sadly, people can pass away at any age. Putting your Will in place now is a sensible protective step but shouldn’t prevent you from reviewing it regularly to make sure it always records your current wishes. “I don’t have a house….” – a Will is not just a necessary tool to make sure that your house passes to someone you wish to inherit it. A Will should deal with a whole range of your wishes, including naming your Executors, appointing guardians for your children and dealing with all your assets. “It’s scary ….” – putting a Will in place isn’t going to kill you! Please do not

think you will be put off by complex jargon, or a stuffy Solicitor! We are here to break down barriers existing within the legal profession to make sure that you understand how easy writing a Will can be. “I’m busy and I work….” – we fully appreciate that family life and work commitments mean it’s hard to fit everything in between 9 and 5. That’s why we are open for longer hours. “It’s expensive ….”– actually, you might be pleasantly surprised to find that writing a Will with Stuart Fantham & Company isn’t the most expensive thing you will do to put your “house in order” and can save you money and distress in the long run. Our initial meetings are completely free and without obligation. If you do find that you would like to write a Will, we will provide you with a fixed quotation at our meeting for your personal Will – and as a “bonus” for writing a Will during Wendover Wills Week, we will reduce that fixed fee by a further 10%! “I don’t know what to put in my Will…” – all of our Wills are bespoke and we will spend time discussing your wishes to help make sure your Will suits your needs and your family.

Candy was born in Beaconsfield. Her earliest memories of Wendover are being driven through the beautiful High Street on her way to Aylesbury Sailing Club, Weston Turville Reservoir. She completed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, played the flute in numerous groups that toured Europe and even narrated “Tubby the Tuba” in French! Having worked at High Wycombe Music Centre as a flute teacher and bar maid at various local pubs in Beaconsfield, Candy moved to North London where she met and married her now ex-husband in 1989. She had a ten year career in Personnel and Training before starting a family. Due to changes in her husband’s career, the family lived in numerous other places including Somerset and Bristol, culminating in a move to RAF Halton, when sadly they parted in February 2003. Candy was left unintentionally homeless with three young children, the youngest, Talitha, then aged 2 and a half, severely disabled and her other two, then aged 8 and 6, struggling with the change of circumstances. It was at this point that Wendover and St Marys’ Church became a true sanctuary for Candy. Candy was able

to find the ideal home for her family who are regular attendees at St Mary’s. The h o u s e w a s converted for Tal i ’s needs making things a great deal easier. Iain Rennie and Florence Nightingale Charities were both able to support them too. When Tali broke her hip the church organised meals to be provided for the family. This was a real blessing and something that the congregation continues to do for those who are bereaved or suffering illness even now. Candy has worked since 2007 as the volunteer shop manager at @stmarys and has been a member of the music group, playing the flute and conducting, for many years. In 2009, Candy met Neill, but that’s another story. Suffice to say, they have continued a long distance relationship for over three years and hope to marry next year. Sadly, in February 2010 Talitha died after complications during surgery. Once again solace came from the Church. A memorial was held for Tali

and many came to say farewell, together with a balloon release on top of Coombe Hill, Tali’s favourite spot. For those who are interested see Facebook Totally Tali page. Candy started working as an Office Manager at a small irrigation firm in 2011 for three days a week. She also started

a degree in Business Management at evening class that same year. She is currently trying to balance the two jobs, studying and planning a wedding at the same time but it is proving to be a tall order! The Church shop, @stmarys has grown since it opened in 2005 and it provides a place for people to gather together either just to chat, book a church function and/or purchase fair trade and ethically sourced goods. This month they celebrate Fair-trade Fortnight and allow customers to enjoy a Big Brew of free tea/coffee on Thursday 28 February together with some free nibbles to taste. Why not go along and join in. Bring your “I love Wendover” card and you will also get a 5% discount on anything you purchase that day.

View from the Chair Firstly thanks to those of you who responded to my request for volunteers to be part of the Chairman’s Snow Patrol. We have a small group of volunteers who, in the event of snow, will turn out to help clear pavements and driveways for those unable to do so themselves. I noticed a similar initiative being set up at Princess Mary Gate. The more the merrier! Just let the Clock Tower have your mobile number and I will send out alerts via text if the need arises.

The Fundraising for the Clock Tower refurbishment is going well. We have now raised a total sum of £2,376 (11th Feb) which is an excellent effort, but we still need a lot more. A fundraising quiz is taking place on March 8th and the Events Group have other things planned to ensure we can reach our target. In fundraising terms it also helps if we can have as many petition forms completed as possible so that the initiative is demonstrably something the community wants. Petition forms can be obtained via the Clock Tower.

Finally I would like to extend a warm welcome to Sue Gilbert who has been appointed to the role of Assistant Clerk – welcome to the Parish team.

Robert Duggan, Chair to WPC

Clock Tower Restoration Fund Two original paintings by local artists Carol Blyth and John Hull, have been donated to the Clock Tower Fund. They will be auctioned at the Fundraising Quiz in Wendover Memorial Hall on Friday 8 March at 7.30pm. Tables of 8, tickets £12 per person, available from Wendover Clock Tower.

Annual Parish Meeting Wed 17 April, 7.30pm, W Mem Hall This year the theme of the APM is the renovation of our Clock Tower. There will be information on view about the history and the future of this important landmark. We will hold a fund raising event during the Meeting. We shall also be promoting Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce who will be there to publicise their ‘I love Wendover’ loyalty card scheme.

Anti HS2 Wendover Parish Council wishes to confirm its position that it is strongly opposed to the building of HS2 which it is felt will destroy the community and character of Wendover and fully supports the WHS2 Action Group in its efforts to defend our way of life.

RAF Freedom of Entry Parade We hope everyone will come along to this very exciting event on Friday 22 March which marks the close ties between Wendover and RAF Halton who have been awarded the Freedom of the Vale by AVDC. RAF Ha l ton are ‘Exercising their Right to Freedom of Entry’ with a march past of troops with bayonets fixed and the Queen’s Colour flying. The Central Band of the Royal Air Force will be in attendance and there will be a flypast at 11.00 hours. The High Street and other adjacent roads will be closed between approx. 9.30am to 12.30pm, we hope everyone will be understanding about any disruption. A Freedom of Entry is the highest tribute that can be paid to any organisation or service. Freedom privileges date back to medieval times when fortress walls afforded protection to cities and towns from incursions of outlaw bands and attacks launched by feudal lords. The citizens wisely refused to allow the entry of bodies of armed men unless they were completely sure that those who carried arms would not use them against the townsfolk. Hence the granting of permission for a formed body of armed men to enter a city, a ‘Freedom of Entry’, became a mark of trust and confidence in which that armed body was held by its citizens.
