Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, This has been another significant week for the College with the CIC and AIC Swimming Carnivals both being staged during the week. The CIC squad performed very well and were placed 4th in Green Division. This is an excellent performance. The AIC result was not available at the time of printing but I would be expecting the AIC squad to also perform very well. I take this opportunity to congratulate all swimmers on their efforts throughout the season. I also thank parents and coaches for their outstanding efforts during the season. Your commitment has contributed greatly to the success of the CIC and AIC swim squads. Well done, to all involved. On Friday the College celebrates its St Patrick’s Day Liturgy in the Callan Centre. This is a major liturgical celebration for the College and I invite parents to join the staff and students in this important Liturgy. The St Patrick’s Liturgy will be followed by the annual running of the Great Morven Race. This is always a hotly contested event and a special way for the College Community to enjoy St Patrick’s Day. Saturday night will see the Shindig (Dinner Dance) in the Callan Centre. This should be another great night with over 300 people already booked in for the night. Make sure you contact the College office for last minute reservations. Next Tuesday (16 March) the College, in conjunction with Queensland Health, will conduct a Parent Information Forum. Experts in the field of child and adolescent health will be available to share their expertise and answer particular queries that you may have. The evening will begin at 7pm in the Callan Centre and run until 8.30pm. I strongly encourage all families to consider coming along to this very important evening. I will send my weekly letter home tomorrow and it will also be available on the College Website. On Tuesday I was informed that Mr Raymond White, father of Christian (Yr 12 Coffey), Brendan Snr 2000 and Adam Snr 2002, had passed away. Ray was a great man, a strong supporter of the College and heavily involved in our Volleyball program. Please keep Judy, family and relatives in your prayers. Finally, this week I have much pleasure in announcing that the new College Website will ‘Go Live’ as of Wednesday, 17 March. David Gardiner will talk about the new website at the upcoming Parents and Friends Meeting. Have a great week. STUDENTS

Frank Torrisi As part of our St Patrick’s Day celebrations this Friday we will be holding the annual Great Morven Race. 150 boys will participate in a flying dash around the school property and past historic Morven House in the centre of the College grounds. The first Green and Gold day for 2010 and the Inter-House

Chess finals will also be held in conjunction with the St Oatrick’s Day Celebrations.

• Green and Gold Day – will be held tomorrow Friday, 12 March. Students are allowed to wear clothes to school that are predominantly green and gold. The aim of the day is to provide students with a chance to wear something different to school but also to show their pride in their school. Students can wear blue denim shorts or jeans but all other pieces of clothing must be predominantly green and/or gold. Closed shoes are compulsory and black school shoes are required for Shop classes. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation. • The Shore to Gate Walkathon will be held on the last day of this term- Thursday, 1 April. The day will involve a 10km walk/run, and House Barbeques to finish the term. It is designed for students and staff to relax and enjoy a day together as well as raising some money for the College. Every student has been given a sponsor card for the Shore to

Gate. We are asking every student to raise a minimum of $25. Last year the community raised over $30,000 and a similar strong effort by all will benefit the students greatly. • Communication – The College Diary is a significant means of communication between staff and families. Please continue to use the Student Diary on a daily basis. If you have an urgent message that needs to be communicated to your son, please contact the Student Office and, at an appropriate time during the day, the message will be passed on to your son. If your son has an appointment during the day, please write a note in his diary so he can show his Group Tutor and his classroom teacher. This will ensure your son leaves class at the appropriate time to meet you at the Student Office to sign out. • Mobile Phones: We understand the need for students to have a phone with them but St Patrick’s has a policy of taking a student’s phone if it is seen or heard during school hours. This aims to minimize the inappropriate use of mobile phones at school. The Mobile Phone Policy is clearly outlined in the College Diary. I encourage all parents to read the policy and to support the College in maintaining a good teaching and learning environment.

• Driver Training: St Patrick’s Students have been presented an opportunity to participate in a Safe Driver Program. This is a one day program driver education course. The designated date is in August and the program will be run on a Sunday. The cost is $143 per person. Students must at least hold a Learners Permit to participate in the program. If you are interested please see Mrs Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office. • Block Exams: All students in Years 11 and 12 receive block examination privileges. Students in these year levels only come to school during the examination block when they actually have examinations. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively for examination preparation. When attending school for examinations it is important students do not leave the grounds of the College between examinations. IPods and Mobile phones are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. If students are staying at school to study the library will be available. • Mary Mackillop College: Year 8 to 12 only. Friday, 12 March, 7-10pm. Cost is $10. The venue is Mary Mackillop College Cultural Centre. ID is required. Appropriate clothing and footwear is to be worn. Normal School Rules apply.

STUDIES

Chris Campbell There are significant differences in what we see as an Education today compared to 100 years ago. If we were at school in 1910 we would study Art, Literature, Music, Language (French), Reading, Writing and Arithmatic. Today we emphasize IT, Business Studies and Health. We don’t just learn to read and write, we study how language can be used to shape the way we think. We don’t simply learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide, we undertake complex and difficult mathematical calculations. There has been a significant change not just in the last 100 years, but the last 10 or 20, and there will be just as many significant changes in the next 10, 20 or 100 years. Why is this? Changes here at school, reflect changes in the world. These changes happen quickly and they are often complex and difficult to understand. You only have to look at a computer today compared to the Year 2000. What was state of the art technology then, is out of date, clumsy and slow today. These advances have brought many stresses and challenges to schools. School work is getting harder. It is more

specialized, it takes more time to do, it can be very difficult to understand. Added to this, there is a great deal of evidence to say that without an education, with strong results at school in all our subject choices it is highly likely that building a career may be extremely difficult. In 2007 a student of mine left school and worked in a DVD store. For the first few months it was great. He had status, because he had ditched school; he had money; he didn’t have to worry about homework, wearing uniforms or sitting still all day. Very soon the novelty wore off and he was bored and sank into an unhappiness which bordered on depression. Was this all he was ever going to do? Well, in today’s world, where employers are looking for highly motivated, highly skilled employees (all competing against one another for jobs—employers really are in a position to pick who they want), yes. this was all he could do. He was lucky—he went back and studied TAFE courses online and gained a Diploma in Business. Now he is looking at entering University to study a Commerce Degree.

This is the reality of school, work and adulthood in 2010 and beyond. Therefore you are entitled to ask what the school is doing to prepare students for this. Hence, there are many initiatives that the teaching staff at St. Patrick’s continue to promote. One of these initiatives is the CISTA testing program in Years 8-11. In order to handle the rather difficult work and pass the challenging examinations that await students as they move into the upper secondary school (Years 10, 11, 12), we need to be able to think at a high level, solve complex problems and write clearly and proficiently. This CISTA testing program has been designed to support the skill development being done in classes. The program has been part of St Patrick’s College for the last 4 years but this year we are giving it a very deliberate focus. Twice a year in Years 8-11, all students will complete both a numeracy and a literacy and writing exam. CISTA is not based on any one subject. Its purpose is to train the boys’ minds to think and operate at the complex level required to excel at school.

COLLEGE DEAN

Matthew Hawkins

Contained in the beautiful prayer of St Patrick, popularly known as St Patrick’s Breast Plate, are the words:

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ

behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ

above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left,

Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,

Christ in the heart of every person who thinks of me,

Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,

Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

The prayer challenges us to see the face of Christ in all whom we meet and all things we do. It challenges us to reflect on our own lives so that we can be aware of Christ present with us. At St Patrick’s, we continually challenge ourselves to find God in the everyday – both the good times and the bad times. It is okay to question where God is when troubling times are upon us, but when a friend or loved one puts their hand on our shoulder and checks if we are okay, we need to recognise the hand of God at the same time. Our retreat program offers us opportunities to reflect on our own spirituality, and at present, we are in the middle of a number of retreats. The first Kairos retreat returned last week; next

Monday, our Year 8s head out on their retreat program, closely followed by our Year 5 young men on Wednesday of next week. Also, this Friday, we celebrate our Patron, St Patrick, in a Mass in the Callan Centre. I invite parents to join us on this important occasion. The Mass, celebrated by Fr Liam, will commence at 8.45am and will conclude at 9.45am for the beginning of the much anticipated “Great Morven Race”. A highlight of the morning will undoubtedly be the debut performance of the “SPC Singers” who will be entertaining the audience with a couple of rousing renditions. I wish everyone a great week ahead.

Mark Mewburn Parents Help Line is a service working parallel with Kids Help Line. Operating from 8am-10pm 7days a week, support, counselling and parent education is available for the cost of a local call! This service is staffed by highly trained counsellors and is a valuable resource for all parents. Staff have been briefed regarding the needs of the St Patrick’s community to better respond to our needs: 1300 30 1300. Kids Help Line is a service offered to young people (under 25) 24/7. It is a free call (mobile charges may apply) 1800 55 1800 or can be accessed by online chat: www.kidshelpline.com.au. Support, counselling and referral information is available from highly trained counsellors. I would encourage

parents to chat with their sons about this service and how they can access it easily and confidentially. If young people do connect well with a counsellor, they can arrange to speak to the same counsellor again in the future. Calls to this service that originate from the northern suburbs are being prioritised by KHL to better respond to the St Patrick’s community. “We care and we listen, any time and for any reason” Griffith Uni is offering an information evening for those students interested in a Medical Career at Nathan Campus from 5pm to 6pm on Wednesday, 19 May. More information is available at [email protected] Emotional Health For Children is an important topic for parents. Some good

information can be found at: www.raisingsmallsouls.com. Australian resources can be found at www.michaelcarr-gregg.com.au and www.andrewfuller.com.au Books from these writers are easy to read and offer some great practical ideas – well worth a look. Events: Lots of upcoming CAREERS related events are listed on my CAREERS website in the Student Intranet – accessible from home Careers and Employment Expo – Convention Centre - 7-9 May 9am-4pm Tertiary Studies Expo (TS Expo) – RNA Showgrounds – 17-18 July 10am-4pm

MINISTRY

The Shore to Gate walkathon will be held on the last day of Term 1 – Thursday, 1 April. Could I please ask all parents to encourage their son to get involved and make an effort to collect donations and/or sponsors. Every student has been given his own specific numbered and coloured card . It is the responsibility of every student to look after his own card. The

Shore to Gate is a positive way to finish the term together as a community and it will help if every student is involved. The new College Website will be launched on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March. The website will provide more up to date information regarding the College and easier navigation around the webpages. The website will also provide access to

the new expanded intranet. This will include Student Cafe and Parent Lounge. You will receive a letter within the next week with your password to access Parent Lounge where you will be able to find information regarding your son’s assessment and results as well as personal details, attendance records and medical information.

ACTIVITIES

DIRECTOR OF SPORT—LUKE DONATINI

Congratulations • All SPC CIC Swimmers – finishing off the CIC season in 4th place in the Green Division on Tuesday, 9 March, at the CIC Swimming Championships. Thank you to all the swimmers, parents and coaches for their time, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the 2010 swimming season.

• Upcoming Important SPC Sporting Dates Friday, 12 March – Great Morven Race • SPC Rugby/Football Coaching and Referees for 2010 As we are nearing the commencement of the College’s Rugby and Football seasons, we have several coaching gaps to fill in both codes. We would like to encourage any parents who wish to be involved with coaching or managing of a St Patrick’s College AIC/CIC Rugby or Football team for 2010 to contact Mr Ryan Schultz via e-mail ASAP - [email protected]. Any parents who are Rugby or Football (Soccer) Referees and wish to get involved in refereeing CIC and/or AIC games this year are also asked to also contact Mr Ryan Schultz ASAP. The more referees and linesmen we have the better. We can make all of our home games at Curlew Park. • Bramble Bay District Sport News Please be advised that the Bramble Bay District AFL trial has been postponed. The trials have been moved to Monday, 15 March. • Metropolitan North Sport News Trials Postponed After consultation with Met North Regional trial convenors and venue managers the following decisions have been made regarding trials: • Soccer 19 Years Boys – postponed until 16 March • Touch 15 & 18 Years – postponed until 19 March

Apologies for the inconvenience these changes have caused. • Sporting Wet Weather Procedures The College provides you the following option when dealing with wet weather or cancellations: Junior and Secondary Sports Information Line is 36319080. This line is ‘live’ and will be updated as often as required. Decisions on training status (poor weather) will be made at 2pm (training days). Please check for the status of training or weekend sport as often as possible. For Saturday sport, the line will be amended by 7am after consultation with opposition school sports masters and College grounds staff. As a ‘golden rule’, unless the Cricket has been called off you should make the effort to get to the venue and let the umpires or coaches make the decision to call the fixture off. Just because it is raining or has rained where you live does not mean that it is raining or has rained at another College’s ovals. The respective Association By-Laws allow for play to be delayed due to poor weather. It is asked that all parents firstly use the Sports Information Line to obtain any up to date changes on training and game status. We ask that you only contact the College Office or Student Office or only if the matter is urgent. • Other Avenues of Communication If information is not placed within The Calling due to the lateness of the information or unforeseen changes all students must be responsible enough to: • Listen to any Student Office announcements • Listen to daily messages and messages passed on during Tutor Group meetings. • Look on Sporting Notice Boards (near Tuckshop) • Contact coaching coordinators for their sport with any concerns. Parents can: • Contact Sports Information Line. • Refer to The Calling • Look at the College Website

• SPC FOOTBALL TRAINING TIMES It is extremely important that ALL SPC football players attend these pre-season training sessions for the duration of March. • ALL Year 5 Football Players – Monday Mornings (Back Oval) 6.45am – 8.00am • ALL Year 6 and 7 Players – Thursday Mornings (Back Oval) 6.45am – 8.00am • ALL Under 13 and Under 14 Players – Tuesday Mornings (Back Oval) 6.45am – 8.00am • ALL Under 15 and First XI Development Squad – Wednesday Mornings (Back Oval) 6.30am – 8.00am • ALL Under 16 and Open Players – Friday Mornings (Back Oval) 6.30am – 8.00am ROAR SKIL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS • Wednesday, 17 March – FREE Brisbane Roar Skills Session (assisting players and coaches of SPC Under 16/Open age group, 6.45am – 8.00am) • Thursday, 15 and Friday, 16 April – FREE Roar Development Staff assisting with SPC Football Holiday Clinic – Curlew Park. • Mouth Guards Fitting At Curlew Park If there are any students who wish to take advantage of obtaining a professionally fitted mouth guard for the upcoming Rugby and Football season, there is an opportunity available on Thursday, 25 March and Tuesday, 30 March at Curlew Park from 3.30pm. St Patrick’s College Strength Training for Young Athletes Years 5 -6 -7

Preseason fitness and strength training has commenced in Term One to support the winter sports such as Rugby and Football. The College’s goal in preseason efforts is to achieve and maintain a higher level of strength, endurance and fitness, therefore promot-ing a more competitive playing field. To achieve these results Years 5-6-7 have been encouraged to attend the College Gym, to participate in functional strength training. These sessions are based solely around body weight programming allowing students to train safely whilst still maintaining needed resistance throughout the sessions to achieve results. (NO WIEGHTS are added into the programs.) Already the College has seen a wide range of students attending from inside and outside the Rugby and Football community. HELP URGENTLY REQUIRED Each week you will see a great band of volunteers doing a wonderful job working in the Callan Center and Curlew Park Canteens. Help has been great in the Callan Center Canteen but the volunteers at Curlew Park struggle to get assistance every week. If this continues we may need to close the Curlew Park Canteen, which would be a great pity, as over the years there have only be good reports about the great service provided to the young men of St Patrick’s and the visiting schools by the volunteers at the Curlew Park Canteen. We would ask if, while you are at Curlew Park watching your sons, you could give of your time so that the volunteers can also take time out to watch their sons.

THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO MEET GREAT MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY If you could assist, please drop in and have a chat with Ann Newton at the Curlew Park Canteen on Saturday mornings or contact Ann Newton 0404 050 167 Ian Johannessen 0400 401 470

LOST Liam Leeder in Year 8 Ryan 2 has lost his sports shoes. They are blue and white Adidas, last seen on a chair in his home room. Their speedy return would be greatly appreciated as they were quite expensive.

CONFRATERNITY CARNIVAL 2010

SPONSORS NEEDED

St Patrick’s proud Confraternity Rugby League tradition continues this year with the carnival being hosted in Bris-bane by Clairvaux MacKillop at St Laurence’s playing fields at Runcorn in June. We are desperately seeking sponsor-ship to assist the boys in their campaign as they try to emulate last year’s feat of winning the Bob Lindner Trophy in Division One. Please contact John Tucker at the College on 3631 9023 or email on [email protected] if you are interested in jersey sponsorship or can assist in any other way.

RYAN HOUSE Ryan House has had a great start to the year with everyone doing well in class, on the sport-ing field and in a range of co-curricular activities. We would like to extend a big welcome to all of the boys who have just started at St. Pats and in Ryan House this year. We put in a

fantastic effort in the Interhouse Chess completion across all age levels, blowing the other houses out of the water! Thanks to all the boys who did Ryan House proud. At our last House Assembly we held a custard donut eating competition which was a huge success, with Ryan 2 coming out on top. Thanks to all the boys and teachers who had a go. Let’s finish off the term as well as we started—let’s put in a big effort with our exams and have loads of fun in Shore to Gate on the last day of term. Finally we wish Miss Sleba all the best for her time off for the rest of 2010 and welcome Mr Brauer to his new role as acting House Dean.
