Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, I would like to begin my article by extending a belated welcome to Term 3. I trust that the term has begun well for all within our Community. I returned from the United States on Friday after completing a summer school program at Boston College. This experience was excellent and I will share more details over the next few weeks. I do wish to thank those within our College community who assumed extra duties in order to allow me to go to Boston. In particular, I wish to thank David Gardiner and the rest of the College Leadership Team for their work which allowed me to participate in this once in a life time experience. Liz and I greatly appreciate their efforts. This week has been a difficult one for the College and its extended community. On Tuesday and Wednesday a number of staff and students were called as witnesses as part of the committal hearing regarding Elliott Fletcher. Significant support structures were put in place to assist staff, students and parents during this week. However, I would encourage all parents to monitor their sons and, if you have any concerns, to contact your son’s House Dean or the College Counsellor, Mark Mewburn. The high profile nature of this case will mean that there will be some media coverage. Again, if you have any concerns or queries with respect to this, please contact me directly. The Band of Brothers that emerged earlier this year will again come to the fore during the coming weeks so that members of the St Patrick’s College community can support each other. This Saturday the AIC Cross Country Carnival will be hosted at Limestone Park in Ipswich. Our runners have been training very hard for many months and I am confident that they will give of their best on Saturday. Students are encouraged to travel to Ipswich to support the runners. Buses will depart the College at 7.30am and depart Ipswich at 12 noon. They should arrive back at the College by 1.30pm. It will be a great day so come along and support. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the AIC Cross Country Captains for 2010: Richard Harris Oscar Ryan Both young men have led the team well and will do so on Saturday. Well done, Richard and Oscar! In this Sunday’s Courier Mail there will be an employment advertisement for St Patrick’s College. This advertisement is seeking applicants for a number of curriculum and pastoral positions for 2011. It is part of the Curriculum and House restructuring processes that the College has been planning. Frank Torrisi and Chris Campbell gave a presentation at the last P & F Meeting about each of the restructures. Finally this week I would like to flag two upcoming events and encourage parents to attend. The first is the Academic Assembly on Tuesday, 3 August, beginning at 9.35am. All parents are welcome. The second is the OPEN DAY and Battle of the Bands on Tuesday, 24 August. This is an important event on the College Calendar and I invite all parents and students to visit the Open Day which will showcase the great things that are happening at St Patrick’s College. It is good to be back. STUDIES

Chris Campbell Next Tuesday, 3 August, at the second Academic Assembly for 2010, we will recognize the scholastic performance of students from Year 5-12. At this year’s first assembly I threw out a challenge to all students to emulate the achievements of our returning old boys who had received an OP score between 1-5. The pathway to this achievement is through consistent performance in our studies from Year 5 to Year 12. It has been very pleasing to note that the level of results at the end of Semester One has been very good. Consequently a large number of students will be receiving Gold, Silver or Bronze medallions. As a College, St Patrick’s offers many opportunities to students, and all of them are significant in the development of our young men. These include our pastoral program, service program, sporting and cultural programs and our career pathways. What we acknowledge as the most important often depends on the outlook of the individual. For my part the most important aspect of schooling at St Patrick’s College is the opportunity to receive an education. In defining the term “education” I believe we are talking about the opportunity to expand and develop our minds as thoroughly, as deeply and in as many ways as possible. All too often in modern

day society, there is a tendency to narrow down what we mean by an “education”. We live in a practical world and as such look for immediate benefit from anything we do. Consequently some see the only relevance of a study program is how it can lead to a job. Make no mistake, the task of graduating students who are qualified to take their place in the workforce is of the utmost importance. At St Patrick’s these opportunities are numerous, with boys able to follow an academic pathway to university and ultimately qualification in a professional career which might include being a doctor, solicitor, engineer or even a teacher. If this is not the appropriate pathway it is also possible for students to pursue traineeships in areas such as ICT or a trade pathway where many of them will become the builders, electricians and plumbers of tomorrow. Nevertheless, I feel to be only motivated to engage in study which is relevant to one’s chosen career is to underachieve. Yes, it’s important, but educationally it is not the only thing. Our challenge in pursuing an education should be to learn as much as we can about as many aspects of the world as possible. Our student body needs to broaden its outlook not restrict it to one thing.

For example, last year I spoke to the boys about the benefits of studying a language, in our case, Indonesian. So what if the student never intends to travel there. The opportunity to learn about and immerse oneself in another culture, another way of life, is what matters. By doing this we allow ourselves to see other ways of thinking, of living, of being. Wanting to work hard in the building trades is admirable and I encourage boys if this is their vocation. But is there anything wrong with being an educated tradesman? Why, would a young man feel that because he wishes to be a builder there is no need to study a subject like English where we read novels, plays and poetry? Who cares if there is no use for Shakespeare on a building site? It doesn’t mean we don’t do it. It doesn’t mean there is no value in learning about as many aspects of our cultural heritage as we can. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to increase our general knowledge and expand our outlook on life, regardless of whatever career we choose. During August our Year 10s will begin their process of subject selection for 2011 and 2012. These boys will be asked to complete a plan in which they indicate their proposed subjects, after school

STUDENTS

Frank Torrisi Cyber Bullying – Last week all Year 9 students attended an information session presented by Nathan Russell from Sandgate Police Station. The following is a snapshot of the information presented on Thursday. The increased use of technology in our society has brought about new opportunities for bullying. Cyber bullying is a form of bullying which is carried out through an internet service such as email, Facebook chat room, Myspace, discussion groups, instant messaging or web pages. It can also include bullying through mobile phone technologies such as SMS. It is important parents are aware of these forms of bullying, monitor them and follow up any particular cases. Our school policy on bullying applies to both offline and online bullying. Anyone can be bullied online and the bully can act anonymously if he or she so desires. Examples of cyber bullying include teasing and being made fun of; spreading of

rumours online; sending unwanted messages; and defamation.

To help protect your son from cyber bullies use the following techniques:

Develop clear communication with him about cyber bullying issues. Let him know it is all right to discuss any problems he has. Investigate the different services that he uses on the internet and the potential ways that cyber bullying can occur. Monitor who your son ‘chats’ to online and what is written. Watch out for any behaviour changes, especially related to online activity. Talk to your ISP about what "take down" policies they have for inappropriate materials that may be posted by cyber bullies. Regularly check your son’s mobile phone and computer for messages.

If you need any assistance in regard to

cyber bullying or would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact Nathan Russell at [email protected] Year 11 Dinner Dance: The Year 11 Dinner Dance will be held next Friday evening, 6 August, at Sorrento Reception Lounge, Deagon. The function will commence at 7pm and conclude at 11pm. No students will be permitted to leave before this time. Sports Photos: The Rugby and Football photos that were taken on 12 June are available for viewing in the Library and can be purchased by completing an order envelope and paying $17 for each photo.

Worried about your Son/Daughter?? The pathway into adulthood is not the easiest one that we are asked to walk. We can all remember from our own youth, how up and down this time can be… and how easily one can get lost, and even forget who we are. Get Real has been developed to support this entire process. Get Real helps the young people identify and fully clear out the limitations they have been living with. These limitations can come from their experiences in life, their beliefs about themselves and others, their environment, social groups, the choices they are making… and so much

more. Some of this can be holding them back, and creating a whole set of behaviour patterns and choices - and they don’t even see it! For more information go to: www.getreal4youth.com/Get_Real/Get_Real_Home.html Coming Careers Events

On Wednesday, 8 September, Brisbane Catholic Education will conduct an interview here at the College as part of their regular Religious Education Visitation process. The last time St Patrick’s College took part in this visitation was 2002/2003, and it will again be an important and informative process for the College. In essence, the visitation explores two main areas: the Religious Education curriculum and its delivery; and the religious life of the school, which encompasses such facets of our school as our liturgical celebrations, retreat program and service programs. The process is quite a rigorous one as it involves the collation of a great deal of relevant data about the College demographic. The data collected will give us a snapshot of areas such as religious affiliation of our student and staff population, the range of our ethnic diversity, and the number of parishes represented in our families here at St

Patrick’s. To that end, in the coming days and weeks, we will be conducting a number of surveys of students, staff and parents to assist us in providing the representatives from Brisbane Catholic Education with an accurate and authentic view of the religious life of the College from a number of perspectives. The surveys, which for the most part will be conducted online, will ask for recipients’ views on concepts such as student engagement in liturgies, effectiveness of retreats, religious symbolism within the College, and the worth of service programs like the Paddies Van. Many of our students from Years 5-12 will be surveyed, along with many of our staff. We will invite parents to participate in the survey on a voluntary basis, but we would obviously appreciate as large a proportion of our parents as possible so as to ensure the most accurate and authentic overall view.

Once all of the data has been collected and collated, a small committee of staff, parents and students will gather to discuss the results and compile a report. This substantial report containing the data and other relevant documentation will be submitted to Brisbane Catholic Education by 25 August. On Wednesday, 8 September, this committee will meet with a panel from BCE including Mr Peter Olley (North Education Officer – Religious Education) and Mrs Leigh Stower (North Education Officer – Religious Education). There is a link in this week’s Calling to the respective surveys, and I ask for your assistance in participating in this process. I believe that the visitation will prove to be not only informative and interesting, but also an affirming and rewarding process for our College community. I wish everyone in our community a great week.

Chris Campbell training and career pathways. What they choose will have a strong impact on their futures. However, in making these choices boys need to look for balance. They should not waste opportunities. They should select not only subjects that will allow them to find work, but also select those which will allow them to know, appreciate and understand more of themselves, others and the world. Last term we revisited our focus statement for 2010: “Perseverance and resilience. Determination and ambition. From Good to Great.”

I suggested then that to be truly great the one ingredient we needed to be more sure of was ambition. Be ambitious. Not just in succeeding in your careers after school, but by succeeding in your studies at school. Be ambitious enough to want to know more about everything, regardless of where your life journey takes you. Be ambitious enough to be truly great! Assessment Calendars: By now all students should have received their Semester 2 Assessment Calendars. Copies for Years 8-12 are available

DEBATING Congratulations to our Year 8 (Team 2) debating boys who will now join our Year 12 (Team 2) boys in the third round of the QDU Debating Finals. The boys won a thrilling debate against fellow AIC school, Marist College, successfully arguing that we should give prisoners the right to vote. Our Year 11 team faced the challenging task of trying to argue that we should legalise heroin injecting rooms. Unfortunately the boys were not able to overcome an impressive Brisbane Boys College outfit. The QDU competition involves schools from across Queensland and as such it is an impressive feat to see two of our teams still in the running. Both teams would love to have some extra support at their next knock-out matches on Wednesday, 4 August: Year 8 at Lourdes Hill at 7pm Year 12 at Stuartholme at 8:15pm

BAND OF BROTHERS ARVO ON THE OVAL CONCERT - SUNDAY 17 OCTOBER 2010 2PM – 5.30PM

The tragedy that occurred at our school on 15 February, 2010, will stay with us all forever. When asked to speak at assembly during this sadness the senior leaders asked Dr Carroll if they could refer to all St Patrick’s students as a Band of Brothers. With this in mind they asked for all students to stand together and be connected as one school community and to be there for each other. The school has now embraced these words to form a bond between all students, past and present. The Band of Brothers – Arvo on the Oval Concert is a chance for all current and past Paddies boys and their families and friends to stand together and celebrate a great school community. This event will raise money for SPC and the Kids and Parents Help Line, who have given much support to the College in recent times. Cost per ticket is $20 General Admission, $10 for SPC students and children 6 and under FREE. We have been busy identifying acts to ensure a wonderful concert for us all to enjoy on the back oval at St Patrick’s College. More details will follow over coming weeks. If you are interested in helping out with this event, please contact Kath Richardson on Mob 0412 772 123 or email [email protected] Next Saturday, 7 August we will have a sausage sizzle outside Harvey Norman at Aspley. The College will be inviting families to take part in a survey from this week. Mr Chris Campbell spoke about the proposed curriculum structure for 2011 and submitted a proposal document at the meeting. Please contact Mr Campbell if you would like more information or a copy of the proposal document. We had a strong response to the Entertainment Books with over 300 sold but there are still some outstanding. If you are not going to purchase the book, please return it to the College office as soon as possible or, if you do wish to purchase, please send your money. We will be able to give the final figures once outstanding books have been returned or purchased. If you have any questions about the Entertainment Book please contact Lesley Palmer on 0421 524 991.
