A Catholic Boys' School in the Edmund Rice Tradition catering for Years 5 to 12
It is hard to believe that the end of term is upon us. However, as we all look back and reflect on what has been a very positive term, the Easter break will be a welcome time to recharge, spend time with family and celebrate this critical time in our Church’s calendar. Whilst Easter often brings up thoughts of holidays and relaxation, it is the central time in the Church’s liturgical year. As Catholics, our existence is focused around the death and resurrection of Jesus. During this extraordinarily sacred time I encourage families to acknowledge and celebrate the Catholic impact of Easter on each of us. Over the Easter break a significant number of activities are occurring. I ask that you refer to communications, the College Website, and Connect for details of tours, training camps, training clinics and games. I also thank the large number of staff, parents, students and old boys involved in the various activities. A significant part of the College community is the breadth of activities that occurs and the huge numbers of people involved in those activities. Good luck to all involved. As the end of term approaches there is a reasonable amount of staff activity occurring. We farewell Mr Kevin Ayres from St. Patrick’s College today. Kevin has been a part of the St. Patrick’s College community for the last few years and has been an excellent teacher and role model for the students as well as being involved in the co-curricular program. I wish him all the best as he takes up a position at Nudgee College. Kevin’s replacement will be Mr Scott Little. Over the holidays Miss Katie Spencer and Mr Justin Moro will be married. We wish both Katie and Justin all the best on their special day. Some staff are also taking leave during Term 2. Mrs Katerina Tilley will take maternity leave for the remainder of the year and we wish her all the best for the upcoming birth of her first child. Katerina’s teaching place will be taken by Mr Luke Vanni. Mr Mike McGrath will be on long service leave for the first four weeks of Term 2 and will be replaced by Mr Steve Lawrence as acting Head of Curriculum. As well, a number of acting curriculum positions have been finalised over the last couple of weeks. They are as follows: HoC SOSE (Terms 2-4) Mr Luis Marin HoC Science (Terms 3-4) Mrs Lorraine O’Sullivan Curriculum Leader English Mr Tim Hoysted Curriculum Leader Science Mrs Stevie Hepburn We also welcome back Mrs Janet Garside who has been on leave during Term 1 and thank Miss Katie Spencer for undertaking the role of HoC Arts during Term 1. Over the last couple of weeks the students across all year levels have been completing assignments and doing examinations. Reports will be posted home over the holidays. Accompanying the reports will be a letter from myself with details of the parent teacher interviews early in Term 2 and the St. Patrick’s Foundation Business Breakfast. Finally, I wish to thank all members of the St. Patrick’s College community for your valuable contributions during Term 1. I wish all families a happy, safe and holy Easter and I look forward to re-connecting in Term 2. Happy Easter

Mr David Gardiner College Dean
St Patrick’s College offers its sincere condolences to the Parish and Primary School of St Kevin’s, Geebung, on the sudden loss of their Founder and Parish Priest of 54 years, Rev Father Timothy Norris PP who died very suddenly on Friday evening, 22 March, with his boots on. R.I.P.
The Old Boys hold a meeting every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Sandgate Hawks Aussie Rules Football Club, Lemke Rd Taigum at 7pm. These monthly meetings are open to any Old Boy’s who are interested in the direction of the Old Boys and listening and taking part in organising events. Most of the committee are present each month.
The more input we can get from Old Boys the better we can make our association. Generally we chat about what is on, what is coming up and any other business people want to raise.
It's a good chance to have a beer and chat with other Old Boys. All are welcome.
Mr Terry Chapman College Old Boys
Our College community had a fantastic finish to Term 1 with the annual Shore to Gate. It was wonderful to see our young men be so positive during the 10 km walk and run. They were very well behaved, very polite and showed great camara-derie with each other and with the staff. Most families have returned their sponsors cards and collected money. It is im-portant that every family returns their card and make some contribution to the fundraising aspect of the day. Please en-sure your son does return his card and money first day back next term, if he has not done so already. It has been a very productive term and I wish all families a wonderful time together as we celebrate the significant time that Easter is.

Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity
As we approach Easter, a time of renewal, it seems ap-propriate that our Church has a new leader in Pope Fran-cis. I have watched and listened with interest and in-deed optimism as Pope Francis has used his very im-portant first public statements to outline his views on the future of the Church. The common theme is a focus on the poor. Pope Francis has said, “How I would like a Church that is poor and that is for the poor.” As has been widely re-ported, Pope Francis said that “as things got dangerous” in the conclave voting, he was sitting next to his “great friend”, Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes “who com-forted me”. When the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio received over the 77 votes needed to become Pope, he said, Cardinal Hummes “hugged me, kissed me and said, ‘Don’t forget the poor’”. Later, Pope Francis said simply, “True power is service.” The simple language and direction of “serving the poor” is refreshing. We will watch with keen interest as this vision is put into practice. Of course, the Church has a long history of serving the poor, and some religious con-gregations, including the Christian Brothers, the Jose-phites, and Sisters of Charity immediately spring to mind. That said, this focus on the poor from the Pope from his first moments is inspiring, especially for the mil-lions of Catholic people who aspire to live their faith through action and through the service of others. We need to be constantly reminded and encouraged to keep our focus on the vulnerable, the marginalized, the poor. The Edmund Rice story does this – Edmund simply said, “Give to the poor in handfuls.” Pope Francis, named in honour of St Francis of Assisi, a “man of pov-erty, a man of peace”, will also remind us. Most im-portantly though, as we approach this coming weekend when we remember the greatest sacrifice of all, the Christ story will continue to keep our focus where it should be. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday and a wonderful Easter.

HARMONY DAY GAMES Harmony Day is celebrated on the 21th March and is a day that celebrates the cultural diversity in Australia – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. Fourteen teams entered the Harmony Day Games at Sat Patrick’s this year. Two days of different games are played at lunch time this Tuesday and Wednesday. The Indigenous team is the champions of 2012 and is defending their title this year. The teams play a range of different cultural games: cricket, Etoi and Indian Leg wrestling. The winners of 2013 will be announced on Thursday.
PADDIES GREEN FINGERS GARDEN A reminder that if you have any used small pots / trays for seedling, to drop them off at the Ministry Office. Easter Prayer May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory. Romans 15:5-7, NLT We wish all the families a safe and happy Easter

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum
Our two main external tests are the NAPLAN tests from May 14-16 for Years 5, 7 and 9 and the Queensland Core Skills Tests for Year 12 on September 3 and 4.
Whilst these tests will take place some time in the future, prep-aration is already under way. When the Year 5,7 and 9s return for Term 2, classes will undertake literacy and numeracy work designed to assist the boys with their understanding of the exam. I will write about this more specifically after the holidays.
On Wednesday of this week, OP eligible students and non OP students wishing to sit for the QCS Test, were involved in a practice session. The paper completed was the 2011 Multiple Choice exam. Between now and September the boys will have completed these practices of the test disciplines, the writing task, multiple choice and short response items. The Queensland Studies Authority is also busily organising
their administration of the test. This week the QSA called for nominations for Chief Community representatives. As the QSA test is extremely important, the QSA appoints external supervi-sors. If any parents are interested please contact Mrs Nott in the Curriculum Office.
The other area relative to the QCS is the process of applying for special provision. If a student feels he has grounds for special provision and has appropriate medical documentation, please see me at the beginning of term two. Applications for special provision close on 21 May.
Thank you to all students for an excellent first term.

Awtel Power India Immersion
In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of amazing activities and sights. However, on reflection I think a more effec-tive way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story. The following story how-ever does no justice whatsoever to express exactly how loving and caring some people are towards us. The group was split in two from Mother’s House. Half of us went to Vabu Zibon and the other half Dyan Dan. I went to the latter. Dyan Dan is a centre run by the Missionaries of Charity, but also reliant somewhat heavily on volun-teers. The House caters for and looks after physically and mentally disabled children. I started off making beds slightly hoping that would be the hardest thing I did there. After a while a Sister came in and asked me and two others to come and feed a child each. I didn’t know how to react because I didn’t have time to think. The same Sis-ter pretty much grabbed me, sat me down on the seat and handed me the plate of food. I hadn’t realized yet or even looked at yet who I was feed-ing. As the name said on the chair, she was called Argina. She had beautiful eyes, and she looked at me with such
intent and so inquisitively. I began to feed her, and any fears and concerns I had previously just melted away. She was so calm, and that made me so calm. She wasn’t fully capable of swallowing all the food I gave her. Occasionally one mouthful would just fall back out. We somehow worked out a routine where when she was ready she would give me a nod and a grunt. By the end, we were an efficient machine. I had gone from very apprehensive to comfortable enough to feed another five children. This point is where my Immersion really kicked off. I need-ed to be plunged into one of those situations otherwise; it would have taken me a few more days to get comfortable. I would have missed out on so much if not for those two people.
I am thankful for that Sister and Argina and I will keep them in my prayers for a long time.

Mr Richard Gradwell Quane House
The annual Quane House Belly Flop contest was again a massive success with around 80 boys having a Flop. Some amazing sounds and splashes were recorded and every flopper braving a red tummy. Outstanding floppers were Tom Newton (winner) and Ethan Lehane (best technical flopper).

TERM 1 – It has been a very positive first term. The level of co-operation and involvement by the students has been excellent, and all functions and events have been enthusiastically sup-ported. In the House competitions we had around 250 boys involved in Inter-House Chess, every student participated in the Swimming Carnivals, 200 runners in the Great Morven race, and 120 boys receive academic medals and points for their House. I certainly hope the Term 1 reports reflect the effort and positive tone around the College. Well done to all, and I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of the St Patrick’s community all the best for the upcoming Easter break and hope that it is both restful and energizing. I would like to raise some important information regarding Hair/Grooming and Uniform before the commencement of Term 2. TERM 2 UNIFORM – Term 2 commences on Monday, 15 April, for all students. All students are to wear the school tie during Term 2. Please ensure your son has his tie for the first day of Term 2. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 must wear Long Trou-sers and the College Blazer to and from school each day. HAIR - The Hair and Grooming Policy is located on page 26 and 27 of the Student Diary with the underlying principle “St Patrick’s College requires students to maintain a high standard of dress and grooming so as to present an appro-priate image of the College to the broader community and to each other, it is an expectation that hair be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times”. I ask that all boys make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of Term 2. Those boys who do not meet the College requirements will face a range of consequences which may include being sent home, to have their hair cut to meet the College guide-lines.

Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students, their parents and the respective coaches from both SPC Cricket and SPC Volleyball for their overall participation, support and commitment in 2013. We would also like to thank Mr Tim Walker (Volleyball) and Mr Ryan Schultz (Cricket) for all their efforts in coordinating both during the week and on game days. As we now turn our focus and attention to both Rugby (CIC/AIC) and Football (CIC/AIC), we do ask that all involved in Rugby or Football take special note of the Rugby/Football Fixture Calendar (outline below) as well as know when and where training is being conducted. With Rugby and Football Trials arranged for Saturday (13 April), it is an opportune time to once again outline the College’s expectations of all St Patrick’s students. Our expectations for ALL SPC students (without exception) are: Kind and courteous behaviour at all times. Use of appropriate language at all times (swearing of any description on or off the playing field will not be tolerated). Correct dress standards both on and off the playing field at all times. All Year 8 to 12 students who remain at AIC rugby/football events to spectate MUST change into FULL College Formal Uniform (this will include black belt, College grey socks and black school shoes). All students will be required to wear their College tie in Term 2. Positive and encouraging cheering only (negative cheering and taunts will not be tolerated). Respect the decisions of game referees and venue officials at all times.
SPC sporting events are not ‘social functions’ for our students to interact with girls from other schools. Those students attending an SPC sporting event are there to compete on the sporting field and/or to support other SPC sporting teams who are competing.
Any St Patrick’s College student who does not follow the above mentioned expectations on ‘game days’ may be asked to leave the sporting venue. Further action may be taken in the preceding week should it be deemed necessary.
