Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, I trust everyone had an enjoyable Saint Patrick’s Day last weekend. At school we had an excellent Mass on Friday followed by the Great Morven Race, whilst on Saturday the Shindig was a huge success with over 350 people attending. All three events were great celebrations. My thanks to the staff and students involved with the Mass and Great Morven Race. I also wish to acknowledge and thank the many people who made the Shindig such a success. I include the Old Boys, the College staff who set up and assisted with printing etc, the Year 10 and 11 students who assisted as waiters, the parents involved in the set up/clean up, the generous sponsors and prize donors and those people who were responsible for the overall organisation of the night. In particular, I acknowledge the outstanding work of Michelle McKeering who coordinated the night. Thanks Michelle and everyone else who assisted. It was a great night. This term is drawing rapidly to a conclusion. The majority of exams and assignments have been done and staff are currently preparing the Term 1 reports. They will be sent home during the Easter holiday break. Next week the students will commence new work prior to the end of the term. Friday 30 March is the final day of Term 1 and is our Shore to Gate Day. It is a normal school day for students. They will participate in the Shore to Gate and be dismissed by 12.30pm. I reiterate that it is a normal school day and ask parents not to take holidays early. Thee will also be AIC rugby trials on Saturday 31 March at Curlew Park. Term 1 has been a full term and I thank everyone for their efforts and support this term. I believe that the efforts of all within the College community has ensured that the start of our 60th year has been successful and that a good basis for the remainder of the year has been established. Our celebrations last Friday for St Patrick’s Day were a significant occasion for the community. The students’ partici-pation in the Mass was much better, with a high degree of reverence shown and responses more vocal. The follow-ing Great Morven Race generated a big buzz around the College and surrounding streets. It was a wonderful sight seeing nearly 250 students race past the rest of the school in four different age races. Congratulations to the following placegetters on the day:-

The level of participation in Mass and the excellent number of boys wanting to race in the Great Morven Race complemented the outstanding numbers in the recent Inter-House Chess competition (over 300 boys involved) and the Sporting and Cultural programs so far this year. It highlights the level of participation of students in our co-curricular program. There are enormous benefits when students are involved in their school activities – at a personal level, year group and with regards to whole school spirit. The question then is – what level of involvement does your son have? Having a broad balance across all activities including academia has widespread benefits. I strongly encourage all families to talk to their son about their involvement in the diverse sporting and cultural activities on offer at the moment. This week alone I have seen boys involved in theatre sports, chess club, art club, film crew, cross country, rugby and football. It is beneficial that all boys make the most of the opportunities available to them at St Patrick’s. The next significant event for our community is the annual Shore to Gate that will be held on Friday 30 March. It is not a day for families to take an extra day holiday but an occasion for all members of our community to celebrate the end of Term 1 in a fun relaxed manner and to raise some important funds for the wide range of charities that our Houses support. All families are invited to attend the Easter Liturgy at 8.45am and/or the Shore to Gate that will commence after the Liturgy. Even the heavy rain last year did not deter everyone from having a great day so I look forward to high involvement again this year. All sponsors cards and the money raised for the Shore to Gate must be brought in next week. The money can be given to Group Tutors or directly to the finance desk in the Front Office.

INDIA IMMERSION

JORDAN DESYLVA

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of the amazing activities and sites. However, on reflection, I think a more effective way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story ….. India has changed my life! I have no regrets, and I am truly grateful for being chosen for the Immersion. As my father is Indian I have a bit of knowledge about the culture and traditions of India. It was a long four week Immer-sion and at times very tiring. We travelled to Kolkata, Puri and Jharsaguda. There are many stories that I could tell but I’m just going to mention two. In Kolkata we visited a school called Loreto Seldah. There we spent time with the Rainbow Girls. They are called Rainbows because a rainbow comes and goes and you can never bring a rainbow down. These girls all came from rough backgrounds and an amazing lady called Sister Cyril takes them in and gives them a good education. What amazed me about this school was the amount of service and missionary programs it had, was outstanding. These girls at Loreto really inspired me and I grew very attached to them. They get nothing compared to what we do at St. Pat’s yet they are always smiling and making the most of their education. The younger ones were so ap-preciative when we would do a small thing like read to them and the older ones would always like to talk to me and have a laugh with me. When I left I saw the effect I had on them as I got about 20 cards from them all and they all started to cry. I must admit I had a few tears too. When we were at Puri we did many things but one in particular that stood out for me was when we visited the hospital for Lepers. There was one who was in really bad shape. I went and looked at his wounds, then I slowly began to touch. It was very hard but I got out of my comfort zone and I feel like I gained a lot from that. The next day we found out that this man whose wounds I touched had passed away. So myself, Mr Corfield and four other boys went to his cremation. This was definitely the most confronting thing I have ever seen in my life. Just seeing his body burn the way it did and the fact that we were the only present at the funeral was mind blowing. When I saw it I felt really sick and nearly threw up. I admit it was very hard, but seeing this really changed me as I now realize what I have and that life is precious and never take things for granted. I strongly encourage all Year 11’s to put their name down for this Immersion in 2012. It is a real eye opener. You will make new friends and yes at times it will be tough but it will change your life for the better, like it has mine!

CURRICULUM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM — CHRIS CAMPBELL

I felt it timely to revisit some of the policies and procedures relevant to the College 1 to 1 laptop program. All stu-dents from Years 7-9 have received a blue netbook, whilst students in Year 10 have a silver laptop. As well as this, students have been provided with a power pack, a netbook bag, an SD card which is inserted into the computer as a way to store data. Students have also been given a user name and password. Computers are carefully coded using a student number system. Hence, it is important that the number on the spine of the computer matches the number on the laptop bag. This is the same for the SD card where the number here should also match the computer. A very important part of the laptop program is the process which requires students to synchronize data. This is done by clicking on “start” then “all programs” then on the words “synchronize my data”. The purpose of this function is to create a link between the student H drive and the computer. This function must be performed every time students wish to make a copy of their data at the very least it should happen once per day. Also, when saving files these must be saved to the SD card and not just to the “documents” location. At the end of the school day, students must take the computer home in order to complete homework tasks. To do so, the first thing students are required to do is to shutdown the device. Having done this, the computer is packed into the laptop bag, which is placed into the school bag. The SD card is not to be removed from the netbook/laptop as the devices will not operate correctly without the SD card. Our laptop program is the window to an educational opportunity, providing unprecedented access to information in a totally up to date learning environment. Not only this, but the program, along with the teaching programs we are able to deliver as a result, will produce interactive learning opportunities which will assist in the development of criti-cal thinking. Our Term 1 exam block culminated this week. Reports will be collated and issued by the end of next week. Teachers have commenced teaching Term 2 work so it is important that all students are present in the last part of the term. Well done to all students on the excellent way they approached the exam block.

As the College’s VET program continues to expand and the popularity of Work Experience increases amongst our students our Work Placement Officer Mrs Barbara Moody is constantly adding to our list of employers of choice who willingly participate in the program. Currently we can of-fer our students work experience in a range of professions, trades and occupations, ranging from work with Australian Army to Queensland Rug-by Union and just about everything in between. Recently one of our Year 11 students, Hayden Piercy, participated in a three day work experience program with Queensland Police Service. The program is run only three times a year on three consecutive days, it exposes students to all aspects of the Police Service and competition for a placement in this program is incredibly fierce. During the program Hayden was exposed to a variety of policing duties including routine patrols, forensic work, observations of interviews with suspects and prep-aration of briefs of evidence for upcoming court cases. Hayden described the course as “an excellent experience that was amazing. I got to do so much more stuff than I thought they’d ever let me do! I’d really recommend it to anyone who is thinking of a career in the police force. The coolest thing I got to do was working with the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) – these guys are amazing.” At the completion of the course Hayden has been issued with a certificate of completion as well as gaining an invaluable insight to this challenging, demanding yet rewarding profession within our society. I would encourage all senior students to investigate some of the amazing opportunities that Mrs Moody has available for those boys wanting to experience a taste of what jobs there are out there in the big wide world when their time here at St Patrick’s is finished.

Congratulations to all the students for the positive manner in which they involved themselves in last week’s Green and Gold Day. The colours worn by the students were strongly in support of the College’s colours of green and gold. The gold coin donations of over $1000 will be donated to the Mater Miracles Charity. Exit Procedures for Years 8, 9 and 10: All students in Year 8, 9 and 10 will be required to complete a form be-fore they exit from Term 1. The form has been included in the Student Diary on Page 60 and 61. It will be re-quired to be signed off by various staff members and parents, laptops by their teachers, library books by Library staff, lockers and locks, by House Deans, assessment, by Mr Campbell and incomplete duties/detentions by Mr Torrisi. The form has been developed to make students accountable and serves as a check that your son has com-pleted all his duties at school. Students who do not complete this form will be required to attend school until 3.00pm on the final day of school. Term 2 Uniform: A reminder that all students are required to wear a College tie from the beginning of Term 2. Also all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 students require long trousers and blazers. These are available now from the Uniform Shop. In preparation for this I ask that if Dry Cleaning of Blazers is required, that this is done over the next couple of weeks for the commencement of Term 2. Hats: All students are required to have a St Patrick’s broad brim hat and it is to be worn when students are partic-ipating in HPE and the various House Carnivals at the College. We need to take precautions to protect ourselves from the damaging effects of the sun. Students who don’t have a St Patrick’s broad brim hat will be required to purchases one from the Uniform Shop. Lost Property - There is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office from lunch boxes to uniforms and particularly shoes (black leather and sporting). It is disappointing that these items are not labeled. It is important that all items are labeled so that it can be returned to its rightful owner. At the end of this term we will be doing our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul and the Uniform Shop of any lost property which has not been claimed before then. Please come in and check it out. Public Transport - St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehav-ing in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. Last Day of Term - All students will be dismissed at 12.30 pm on Friday, 30 March. It is expected that all students attend school until 12.30 pm. Students will commence the day with an Easter Liturgy followed by the Shore to Gate.

HARMONY DAY: 21 March 2012

Harmony Day is celebrated around Australia on 21 March each year. It's a day when all Australians cele-brate our cultural diversity. The day is also the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Dis-crimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, protesting against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to elimi-nate all forms of racial discrimination.

The continuing message for Harmony Day and the main message of the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in 2012 is that Every-one Belongs, which means all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background.

We have celebrated Harmony Day at St Patrick’s Col-lege by having teams of different nationalities at school enter a fun sport competition held on the back oval at lunch time on Wednesday 21 March. Teams from Pacif-ic, South Africa, Canada, Scotland, Australia and

New Zealand played games from different cultures like Etoi and Indian legs wrestling. Well done to all the teams that have entered the competition.

MINISTRY IN ACTION:

A meeting will be held in Waterford Building on Tuesday 27th March 2012 at 7 am. This is our last meeting for Term 1, so please make all the effort to attend.

Anti-Bullying Poetry competition

During Anti Bullying week earlier this term the Year 7 classes have been doing a unit on Bullying in Drama. The boys had to write a poem about bullying. 4 entries from Year 7 D and B classes were selected and chosen by Mr Torrisi and they will be presented with their prizes at Assembly next Tuesday. They are:

INTER - HOUSE THEATRESPORT COMPETITION

During term two we will stage our first ever Inter– House Theatresport Competition. This will be run on a “just for fun” basis and will not count towards the overall House Shield. The idea is for each house to provide a team of four players, drawn from grades 9 to 12 who will compete in a series of short, improvisational drama based games. The contest will be staged at senior lunchtimes in the Waterford Building in two pools of teams with the top two teams in each pool progressing to the finals! The dates for the competition are

There is already a great ‘buzz’ around the College about this new program which should provide some great lunchtime entertainment and bring some momentum to the Theatresport program in the lead up the this year’s inter-school competition. To nominate see your House Dean or for more information see Ms Watson in the Ministry Office (opposite the Tuckshop). JUNIOR SCHOOL CULTURAL COMPETITION This year’s Brisbane Independent Schools (B.I.S) cultural competition will be staged over three Tuesday evenings in May and June. We plan to field the following teams

Year 7 – Debating, Public Speaking, Chess Year 6 – Public Speaking, Chess Year 5 – Public Speaking, Chess

Ms Andrea Hey (Junior School Learning Support) will be coordinating our program this year and is keen to see a large contingent of boys participating. This is a great way to learn new skills, as you receive great coaching and gain valuable experience while meeting new friends. The official ‘sign-on” for this competition will be held after Assembly in week one next term. DEBATING NEWS—MS ZOE MORGAN If we were concerned that 2012 would not be able to match the lofty heights of achievement seen in 2011 de-bating, it’s because we hadn’t yet seen the incredible potential that would burst forth from our Year 8 teams. Both Year 8 teams began their season with fantastic debating performances this week. The young men in Team 2, Jayden Bennett, Kyle Bennett and Jesse Goldspink, were extraordinarily unlucky to be narrowly beaten, but the lucky audience will tell you that they were engaging, informative and entertaining. Spectators who stayed on for the second debate with Team 1 were certainly not disappointed though, as the young men in this team could certainly debate in the Year 12 rounds…and put most teams to shame. Liam Morgan, Michael Doyle and Cameron Basile were the most accomplished and well-prepared Year 8’s that we’ve seen for many years. As each speaker presented we were more and more engrossed in their arguments to support the addition of toys with fast food meals. If you weren’t there last night watching our Year 8 debaters ‘fighting the good fight’ then you’ve missed a rare opportunity. Luckily we have three more rounds to see these young men in ac-tion. Clear your schedule and get along to see some remarkable speakers in action. Congratulations must also go to 2011 Captain of Debating, Nathanial Trappett, who made his debut as a Queensland Debating Union adjudicator last night. The QDU is still looking for more adjudicators for the 2012 season. If you are over 18, free for a couple of hours on a Wednesday evening (about once a month) please just contact Ms Zoe Morgan ([email protected]) for more information. Adjudicators are fully trained and it’s a paid ‘hobby’! DIRECTOR OF SPORT— LUKE DONATINI

As we now conclude cricket (AIC & CIC) and volleyball (AIC) for 2012, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students, their parents and the respective coaches from both cricket and volleyball for their overall participa-tion, support and commitment. I would also like to thank Mr Chris Carlill (Volleyball) and Mr Ryan Schultz (Cricket) for all their efforts in coordinating both during the week and on game days.

Looking forward to the next few weeks we now really turn our focus and attention onto both rugby (CIC/AIC) and football (CIC/AIC). I do ask that all involved in rugby or football take special note of the rugby/football fixture calendar (see below) as well as know when and where your (sons) training is.

With rugby and football fixtures arranged for this Saturday (24th March), it is an opportune time to once again out-line the College’s expectations of all St Patrick’s students. OUR EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL SPC STUDENTS (WITHOUT EXCEPTION) ARE: Kind and courteous behaviour at all times. Use of appropriate language at all times (swearing of any description on or off the playing field will not be tol-

erated). Correct dress standards both on and off the playing field at all times. All Year 8 to 12 students who remain at AIC rugby/football events to spectate MUST change into FULL College

Formal Uniform (this will include black belt, College grey socks and black school shoes). All students will be re-quired to wear their College tie in Term 2.

Positive and encouraging cheering only (negative cheering and taunts will not be tolerated). Respect the decisions of game referees and venue officials at all times. SPC sporting events are not ‘social functions’ for our students to interact with girls from other schools. Those stu-

dents attending an SPC sporting event are there to compete on the sporting field and/or to support other SPC sporting teams who are competing.

Any St Patrick’s College student who does not follow the above mentioned expectations on ‘game days’ may very

well be asked to leave the sporting venue. Further action may be taken in the preceding week should it be deemed necessary.

DIRECTOR OF SPORT ABSENT FROM SPC (24 MARCH - 14 APRIL) I will be away from St Patrick’s College from Saturday 24th March until Saturday 14th April. As I will be overseas during this period, unfortunately, I will have minimal contact with the College. Please be advised that during my absence, Mr Ryan Schultz will deal with most things sport. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS Benjamin Gould (Year 7) – recently selected into the 2012 Australian Under 13 Table Tennis Squad. He will now have the opportunity to attend National and International Coaching Camps throughout the year. Darcy Roper (Year 9) & Adam Edgar (Year 9) – recently competed for Queensland at the 2012 Australian Junior Track and Field Championships. Adam placed 4th in 200m Hurdles (28.84sec), 6th in 100m Hurdles (15.99sec) and 19th overall in the 800m (2.12min). Sport Support Group News Our Sport Support Group wishes to thank all those good parents who gave voluntarily of their time and energy to assist us at the recent Years 9 – 12 Social at the PCYC on Saturday 15 February as also the Shindig on Saturday 17 March. A good time was had by all. Our monthly meeting for April has been brought forward to Monday 26 March, 2012, 6.00pm in the New Board Room, Morven Building. All Parents are welcome to our meetings which last just on the hour. Parents of students playing football (soccer) or rugby are especially invited as we prepare for the next Trimester Sport for CIC and AIC Sport.

In 2012, St Patrick’s College would like all students and families of St Patrick’s College to support the following fundraising initiative. If your son (or daughter) requires a new fitted mouth guard, we ask that you please contact /make an appointment with the Bracken Ridge Denture Clinic, 2 Wurley St Bracken Ridge. The clinic is run by a St Patrick’s College family and they have kindly offered to donate some of the proceeds of each mouth guard back to St Patrick’s College. All money raised from this venture will go towards the purchasing of further equipment for our new College Gym (currently under construction).
