Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, This week has certainly been a difficult one with the rain and the disruption it has caused both here at school and at home. However, despite the rain and the difficult conditions much has been happening. The CIC & AIC swim seasons have taken place this week. Large numbers of boys have been involved in both squads and the swimmers have worked hard through the season. St Patrick’s College was placed an excellent 4 th place (in green division) in CIC. This is an excellent result and I congratulate all swimmers. The AIC was not known at the time of printing however, the coaches are optimistic of a strong showing in 2012. My thanks to all coaches for the season and I congratulate Gary Black and Keegan McCann on their appointment as Captain’s of swimming. This week also saw the launch of the 2012 debating season. St Patrick’s College is entering a record number of teams in this year’s QDU competition. I congratulate Duncan Moir on his appointment of the 2012 Captain of Debating and wish all debater's and their coaches the very best for the 2012 season. The Year 11 & 12 students begin their exams next week with the other year levels following in the near future. With this in mind it is imperative that the students are preparing for their exams with regular revision. Exam time can also be stressful for the students so supporting and encouraging are a key to successful preparation. Last Sunday I had the privilege of attending the College Captain’s Reception in the Waterford Building. From the 60 years of the College we had 46 years of school leaders represented including the first school captain from 1952, Peter Jackman. It was a wonderful afternoon as people from the different eras recalled their time at St Patrick’s College. As well as the College leaders, six past principals attended, a number of Christian Brothers and some staff, including Mr Steve Graham, who is in his 36th year at St Patrick’s College. It was a wonderful afternoon and highlighted the strong “Paddies Spirit’ that has been synonymous with St Patrick’s College for 60 years. My thanks to Mr John Smith and Mrs Jan Thompson for their efforts in organising and coordinating the day. Kath Richardson has informed the College of the passing of her father. Mr Ryan was a father to old boys Dan, Mick, Sean and Brendan Ryan and Poppy to Mitchell, Lachlan and Dominic Stanton, Patrick and Jack Ryan, Ryan and Lewis Richardson, Max and Zak Ryan. She expresses her gratitude to the St Patrick’s community for their well wishes and prayers. I ask that you keep the family in your prayers at this time. Next week the College celebrates its St Patrick’s Day Mass on Friday16 March in the Callan Centre at 8:45am. All parents and friends are welcome to attend. Have a great week. COLLEGE DEAN

DAVID GARDINER

In term 1 the Year 7 and 9 students have been participating in a unit about the beliefs of the Catholic church and the Mass. As part of that unit we have asked the students to attend the morning Mass at the college on a Tuesday morning 8am. It has been delightful to see the wonderful participation in the Mass by both students, parents and siblings. I would like to especially thank the parents who have made the effort to come to the morning Mass and support the boys in partic-ipating in one aspect of the religious life of the school. We are extremely lucky to have Fr Liam celebrate an enlightening and active Mass with our students. I would like to encourage any students and parents who have not had a chance to come to Mass yet to come along in the next few weeks on Tuesday morning at 8am

The St Patrick’s College 2012 Family and Business Directory has been produced and will be distributed to every student on Friday. The Family and Business Directory is a listing of family contact details plus businesses that are actively associated with or suppliers to the College. This year’s edition has a special 60 Year Anniversary theme. The Directory is an easy reference to help make contact with the families of your son’s classmates, friends and team mates. Many families find it useful to keep in the car glovebox and/or at home so they can help arrange shared lifts to sporting or cultural events, or simply to check up on de-tails of social events. Additional copies are available from the Student Office if you would like a second copy. I strongly en-courage all our families to support the businesses that are advertising in the Directory. These businesses are great supporters of St Patrick’s College and I encourage you to support them in return. Please also check out the St Patrick’s College Online Busi-ness Directory at the College Website, under ‘Our Community’ and ‘Business and Community Links’. St Patrick’s Day will be celebrated around the world on March 17. We will celebrate this special day on Friday March 16. After celebrating Mass in the Callan Centre the school body will gather around the College grounds and neighbouring streets to participate in and watch the annual Great Morven Race. ’Morven’ stands proudly in the centre of our College and is a sig-nificant part of Queensland’s history. At our 60 Year Anniversary Captains Reception last Sunday, some past College Captains were reminiscing about their participation in the Great Morven Race. It was great to hear that special events such as this linger long in their fond school days memories. It is important that we continue to remember and celebrate our wonderful history. I invite families to join us next week for our St Patrick’s Day Mass followed by the Great Morven Race. The History of Morven Mr John Mc Connel of Durundar (now Woodford) was elected to the first Legislative Council of Queensland from 1862 to 1868. To alleviate unnecessary travelling he decided to build a home in the vicinity of Brisbane. Mr Smith built the residence which in later years became known as Morven. The residence had not been completed when it was first occupied around the end of 1863. Mrs Mc Connel planted two pines trees in the front of her home and for years these trees guided many a fisher-man and sailor. In 1880 David Longland Brown, a member of the Thos. Brown and Sons family business, purchased the home. He named the home Morven, after the town in Scotland that he came from. It was while Mr Brown owned Morven that it was lived in by the then Governor of Queensland, General Sir Henry Wylie Norman. Morven was used as a vice regal holiday residence. In 1910 Morven was purchased by a grazier, Mr E G Blume, who married a Miss Craven, the daughter of a police magistrate. Miss Craven’s mother and her sisters took up residence and Morven became a well known guest house for some years. Enter-tainment and dances were regularly arranged for the guests. In 1926 Mr Blume and associates had a prospectus prepared for a company named Maxims (Sandgate) Limited to be incorpo-rated under the Queensland Companies Act (1863-1913). Morven was to be reconstructed as an up to date café, dance hall and flats. At that time, the grand structure consisted of two floors providing 16000 square feet and 28 rooms. Much of the interior, including the great stairway, were of solid cedar. Morven had its own covered central water well. In the nineteen thirties the guest house closed and Morven became the private home of the Misses Craven. In 1951 the Sandgate Parish of the Catholic Church purchased the property. When Reverend Father P J O’Rourke and the Christian Brothers opened a parish school in 1952 Morven was the original school building. The Shore to Gate is only three weeks away. Has your son started collecting sponsors/donations for his Shore to Gate? Great rewards are on offer to acknowledge the students who make a significant effort. Every student should be aiming to collect a minimum of $25. This will then greatly assist each House charity and continue to encourage all our students that it is important to make an effort to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

INDIA IMMERSION

D’ARCY SMITH

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of the amazing activities and sites. However, on reflection, I think a more effective way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story …..

A very eye opening day would be the day we visited Bargarh, a home/school for disabled children. It was a long drive but once we got there I saw why it was worth it. We walked in to a room full of children with disabilities. The second we walked in they started to sing and a small boy bought Fr. Liam some flowers and a card. After they took us to the lunch room, and there was all this food. It made me feel so welcome and included. We ate a massive lunch while Fr. Liam caught up with his friends. After lunch we went down to meet the kids and it quickly turned in to a free for all game of throw the stress ball at the Australians. Everyone got involved and it was a lot of fun. I hadn’t had that much fun in a long time. After a few minutes we managed to turn it in to a game of cricket. I was having so much fun that I didn’t stop to think where these kids had come from or why the little girl over there had no arms, but it didn’t really matter we were having fun and playing cricket. Once things had calmed down quite a bit I noticed a group of girls in the corner of the playground. At first they were very shy but after 15 minutes they were treating me like their best friends. I noticed that all the boys had gone upstairs so I had to say goodbye to the girls and go back to the lunch room. One of the teachers was talk-ing and explaining how the little girl I was talking to had been pushed into a fire when she was a baby by her father. She was pushed into a fire because she was disabled. I was very sad and blown away at the thought of anyone doing that to a baby. She was just the happiest little girl I have ever met even though the stuff she had been through. It was time to leave and I had mixed feelings on the way out. I saw this sign that said 5% of Indi-ans are disabled only 1% are educated. Thank god you are one.

CALLING ARTICLE - MATHS As we move in to the final month of term 1, students should now be preparing for end of term exams. The direction we give , as teachers and parents, when speaking to the boys about these upcoming tests, is that it is time to spend more time studying. But what exactly does the term “study” mean? One of the most basic facts of life is that during and beyond their time at St Patrick’s students will be required to “study” for tests and exams. There are many reasons as to why study is important. The most obvious is that it assists students in achieving better results. It is comforting for students to have a sense of control over their assessment items. The development of a young man’s organisational skills, will go a long way towards reducing anxiety. The most effective approach to study is to ensure a continual review of work taught during a topic. In doing so, stu-dents must check understanding and ask for clarification as a unit progresses. This will allow for the work to be ad-dressed in manageable chunks. Leaving study to the night before the exam will rarely prove satisfactory, with stu-dents tending to feel overwhelmed by the volume of work they find they must cover. In many schools, there is a culture of waiting for a revision sheet before study can commence. I propose, that instead of waiting for a revision sheet, students should look to write their own. In reviewing the class notes and teacher handouts, ask questions such as “Who”? What? Why do you think? What might happen if?” for subjects such as Maths, use index cards where a formula is written on one side, with examples on the other. This can be used to practise understanding basic facts. Rote learning still has a role to play in order to answer the study questions you pose to yourself, students must first know their content. Generally reading and constructing a written summary of what is read, proves to be the most effective means of committing content for memory. If reading and note taking proves tedious, perhaps the information could be organised through the use of graphic organises such as timelines, concept maps, flow charts, swot analyses and so on. Many teachers are using such graphic organisers as part of their unit design. “Study” doesn't happen naturally it is often frustrating and requires discipline and commitment. Students need to discover what works best for them, but one thing is for sure, being organised and prepared is essential.

STUDENTS

This week I have dealt with a number of issues caused by students using Social Networking Sites. It is important that as parents we are aware of what our children are saying and placing on these social networking sites like “Facebook”. Some common issues raised by parents include: Amount of time their son spends on a “Social Networking Site”

Impact on Studies

Reduced time spent with family

Sending Inappropriate comments or requests

It is important as parents that we negotiate the use of “Technology” in our homes. Some simple rules that are recommended by professionals include: Computers should be placed in a room that is visible by an adult

Monitor the websites your son is visiting

Check the content that is on your son’s “Facebook account”

Mobile Phones should be switched off at night and out of your son’s room

Invest in or take up the free internet monitoring packages available

The increased use of Technology also has seen an increase in the incidents of Cyber bullying. Cyber Bullying – is a form of bullying which is carried out through an Internet service such as email, facebook chat room, myspace, discussion groups, instant messaging or web pages. It can also include bullying through mobile phone technologies such as SMS. It is important parents are aware of these possible forms of bullying, monitor them and follow up any particular cases. Our school policy on bullying applies for both offline and online bullying. Anyone can be bullied online and the bully can act anonymously if he or she so desires. Examples of Cyber Bullying include teasing and being made fun of; spreading of rumours online; sending unwanted messages; and defamation.

To help protect your son from Cyber Bullies use the following techniques:

Develop clear communication with children about Cyber Bullying issues. Let them know it is all right to discuss any problems they have. Investigate the different services that children use on the Internet and the potential ways that Cyber Bullying

can occur. Monitor who your son ‘chats’ to online and what is written Watch out for any behaviour changes with children, especially related to online activity. Talk to your ISP about what "take down" policies they have for inappropriate materials that may be posted by cyber bullies. Regularly check your son’s mobile phone and computer for messages. Please feel free to use this information as a discussion starter around the Dinner table.

STUDENTS

TERM 2 UNIFORM: A reminder that all students are required to wear a college tie from the beginning of Term 2. Also all students in Years 10, 11 & 12 students require long trousers and blazers. These are available now from the uniform shop. As part of our St Patrick’s Day celebrations on Friday 16 March, we will be holding the annual Great Morven Race. 150 boys will participate in a flying dash around the school property and past the historic Morven House in the centre of the College grounds. The first Green and Gold day will also be held in conjunction with the St Pat-rick’s Day Celebrations. It is an expectation that all students in Years 11 and 12 attend school on this day. GREEN AND GOLD DAY: will be held on Friday, 16 March. Students are allowed to wear clothes to school that are predominantly green and gold. The aim of the day is to provide students with a chance to wear something differ-ent to school but also to show their pride in their school. Students can wear blue denim shorts or jeans but all other pieces of clothing must be predominately green and/or gold. Closed shoes are compulsory and black school shoes are required for Shop classes. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation. The Shore to Gate Walkathon will be held on the last day of this term- Friday 30 March. The day will involve a 10km walk/run, and House BBQs to finish the term. It is designed for students and staff to relax and enjoy a day together as well as raising some money for the College. Every student has been given a sponsor card this week for the Shore to Gate. We are asking every student to raise a minimum of $25. Last year the community raised over $40,000 and a similar strong effort by all will benefit the students greatly. MOBILE PHONES: We understand the need for many students to have a phone, particularly for communication pur-poses. St Patrick’s has a policy of taking a student’s phone if it is seen or heard during school hours. This aims to minimize the inappropriate use of mobile phones at school. The Mobile phone policy is clearly outlined in the Col-lege diary. I encourage all parents to read the policy and to support the College in maintaining a good teaching and learning environment. YEAR 11 AND 12 STUDENT TERM EXIT PROCEDURE: On Friday 9 March students in Years 11 and 12 will be involved in a Term exit process. The process will involve students being signed off by the Academic and Pastoral areas of the College. Year 12 students will meet with their House Deans during Period 5 and once they have been processed are able to leave school to commence their block exams. Year 11 students will follow the same process during period 7. If a student has not fulfilled his Academic or Pastoral commitments he will be required to stay at school until all those commitment have been fulfilled during exam block. All students must have their parents/guardians sign the forms which you will find in your sons diary on page 60. BLOCK EXAMS: All students in Years 11 and 12 receive block exam privileges. Students in these year levels only come to school when they have exams. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively for exam prep-aration. When attending school for exams it is important not to leave the grounds of the College. IPods and Mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. MARY MACKILLOP COLLEGE: Year 8 to 12 only. Friday 9 March. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $10.00. The venue is Mary Mackillop College Cultural Centre. ID is required. RICE HOUSE DEAN — JOHN CROSS

STUDENTS

After finishing a credible 7th in the Inter-House championships in its first year in 2011, Rice House is looking to build on this spirit in 2012. We got off to a great start with the news that two of our House Leaders from 2011, Jordan Budgen and Matt Edgar re-ceived OP’s of 1 and 4 respectively. Jordan has subsequently been accepted into Medicine at the University of Queensland and Matt into Business at QUT. We hope to have Matt and Jordan back to speak with our Rice Men shortly about some of the tools they used to find academic success while maintaining an active involvement in extra-curricular activities. Our 2012 House Leaders, Damian Tatum and Mi-chael Xanthopoulo, have had a very busy start to the year organising our chess, junior swimming and Great Morven Race teams. These two young men have done a great job so far and have gained the respect of our Rice men and the staff through their enthusiasm and dedication. One of the great parts of my job is watching the young men of Rice become leaders and it has been a pleasure seeing the work of our seniors in their roles as Big Brothers. The parents of our new Rice Men can be very comfortable knowing the effort their son’s Big Brother is making to assist them to feel like a “Paddies Boy”. I was very lucky to attend the year 8 retreat and camp in week 5. Congratulations must go to all our year 8’s who camped in very wet and trying condi-tions. For many boys it was an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves in activities such as high ropes, mountain trekking and camping in the bush. Thanks must also go to Daniel Gerandonis, Matt Brown, Jeremy Gordon, Christian Rizzalli and Lochlain Riordan and Miss Selena Fisk who led our year 8’s on retreat.

Week 4 saw Rice House place 5th in the Inter House swimming championships, with some great individual performances by Ben Cox, Lochlainn Riordan, Kyle Vesely and Adam Edgar. A great couple of days were had by all students and most pleasing was the spirit showed by all our new students whose enthusi-asm was infectious. We are also looking for anybody who is able to as-sist with transporting two boxes of sporting goods to Normanton State School which were donated last year by the men of Rice. If you are able to assist, I would love to hear from you. Rice has developed a special relationship with Normanton State School through the arrival of Jordan Edwards at St Patrick’s College. Jordan is an Indigenous student from Normanton who will be completing his senior years at SPC and is a member of Rice House.

Warm Regards John Cross Rice House Dean

IDENTITY & MINISTRY

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL IDENTITY — MATTHEW HAWKINS

On Saturday March 24, Queenslanders who are enrolled to vote will use their voices to decide upon the next State Government. This is our right, and it is our responsibility. I of course acknowledge that for a large number of our students, the upcoming elec-tion, along with its campaigns, advertising, arguments and people on the footpath waving and holding placards, holds little to no interest. Fair enough.

However, it is worth noting that for many of our senior students, this will in fact be the last election, State or Federal, in which their voice will not be heard. So, whoever wins this upcoming State Election, the ALP or the LNP, or indeed Katter’s Australian Party, will need to impress a new group of voters during this next term. How will they go about doing so? What will be the issues that will sway the young voters of today.

Well, if this year’s group of Year 12 St Patrick’s College students is anything to go by, I think I have some ideas…

Firstly, I would encourage the next State Government to somehow provide free text messaging for young people. Secondly, I wonder if the government would stipulate a maximum number of minutes homework that a school could set, allowing for a mini-mum number of hours on Facebook per night? Perhaps free tuckshop every second day for Year 12 boys?

These ideas of course do not give sufficient credit to our students, and while some of these may be well received by our Seniors of 2012, what I know about our young men is that they recognize what is most important in their lives, in our society and in the world. Here are some things I know about our young men. I know these things because I have recently been on a Kairos retreat with many of them; I know these things because I hear them speak to each other at lunchtime, and I hear them speak on Assemblies; I know these things, because I see our young men with our Year 5 “Little Brothers” in the yard, in Tutor group, and on buses; I know these things because I see our young men on the Paddies Van, in the Callan Centre and at Curlew Park on Saturdays. I know these things:

Our young men know that they are lucky – luckier than the vast majority of people in the world their own age. Our young men know that leading is serving, and they practise this every day Our young men know that making a difference in someone else’s life can be as simple as smiling, saying hello, picking up a

piece of rubbish or saying “I love you” Our young men know that to make a contribution, they need the skills and the desire to do so; therefore, they know they

need to work hard and use what they learn to help others

Our young men want to be led by people who also know these things. They want leaders who are guided by principles of com-passion and concern for the weakest in our society. Let us hope that our leaders when we wake up on Sunday March 25 also know these things.

CULTURE

CULTURAL DIRECTOR— GEOFF SAMUELS INTER-HOUSE CHESS 2012

After three rounds and 435 games, the 2012 Inter– House Chess Competition has drawn to an exciting close. Thanks to the hundreds of boys who competed this year and to the staff who assisted in making it such a successful comp. It was great to have the new Waterford Building as the site for our finals yesterday. While the overall House standings will not be announced until the next full school assembly on Tuesday March 27, here’s the top three teams in each age group;

Remember that the placings from 4th to 9th all score points towards the House scores and so the final placing for each of the Houses cannot be determined from the table above and will not be revealed until March 27. Well done to all who compet-ed. Don’t forget Chess Club runs every Monday after school in the Library and sign-up for AIC and BIS chess will be conduct-ed in term two.

DEBATING - MS ZOE MORGAN Debating 2012 kicked off last night with much fanfare and excitement. Whilst the excitement for our Year 11’s was short-lived, with their debate postponed, our Year 9’s began the year in style. Team 2, coached by Mr Merrett were narrowly defeated, but newest Irish import Fiachra Sides made an excellent debut. Mrs Newman began her first year as a debating coach with Team 1 by notching up an impressive and comprehensive victory. Lachlan Kuhr provided some incredibly animat-ed debating and provided further proof that the Year 9’s will be a debating juggernaut this year. Next Week – Hope to see you there: Year 10 Team 1 – 8:15pm at Genesis Christian College (Bray Park) Year 10 Team 2 – 7:00pm at Genesis Christian College Year 12 Firsts – 8:15pm at St James (Spring Hill) Year 12 Seconds – 8:15pm at Genesis Christian College

RUGBY CO-ORDINATOR— HEATH MACKINTOSH

Dear Members of the St Patrick’s community I am calling for expressions of interest for 4 rugby coaching positions we still have available for the 2012 rugby season. Initially we are looking for an assistant 16A rugby coach to coach with Tim Hoysted. The 16A Coaching position is for an experienced coach with knowledge and experience in rugby in particular with the forwards. The second coaching position is for a 16B coach whom will work closely with the 2 16A coaches and the coaches in the Open Age groups. We are also looking to fill 2 coaching positions with the 13B Rugby team (Preferably a shared position with a backs coach and forwards coach). In this age group we are looking to have 6 coaches in total (2 per team) of which we have 4 already. If you are interested in any of the 4 coaching positions for this season please email me directly with your coaching credentials and I will get back to you as soon as we have found suitable candidates for these positions.

CONFRATERNITY RUGBY LEAGUE COORDINATOR— JOHN TUCKER

The Confraternity Organising committee are pleased to announce that the Coaching position for the 2012 St. Patrick’s College Confraternity Squad has been awarded to Mr Shane Perry whilst the positions of Assistant Coach has been given to Mr Tony Gadsby and Team Manager to Mr Steve Lawrence. Shane comes to us with many years of NRL experience notably at Western Suburbs, Canterbury Banks-town and the Brisbane Broncos where he won a premiership in 2006 along with many years experience in the QLD Cup with Redcliffe and North's before finishing his career in the Super League in Europe. I would like to thank everyone who applied for the position of Coach and congratulate Shane, Tony and Steve on their appointments as we prepare for our best ever tilt at the Division A title. It was encouraging to see over 60 boys sign on throughout the week for a chance to make the final cut of 20 in what will be an enthralling week of football when the carnival gets underway from the 25th -29th of June later this year.

If your son (or daughter) requires a new fitted mouth guard, we ask that you please contact /make an appointment with the Bracken Ridge Denture Clinic, 2 Wurley St Bracken Ridge. The clinic is run by a St Patrick’s College family and they have kindly offered to donate some of the proceeds of each mouth guard back to St Patrick’s College. All money raised from this venture will go towards the purchasing of further equipment for our new College Gym (currently under construction). Below is a flyer outlining all details of what we would hope to be a successful fundraising venture and service to our College Community.
