Sandy is in Year 12 and, like the other Year 12 students, is preparing to leave St. Patrick’s College in November. Over the last week Sandy has had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and as a result received a reasonable amount of press coverage including newspaper articles in the Courier Mail and Quest newspapers, a report on Channel 10 news and a mention in Federal Parliament. We are very proud of Sandy, his courage and his pride in being a ‘Paddy’s Boy’. I am also very proud of the St. Patrick’s College community in which Sandy is accepted as just one of the boys. Br Chris Pritchard Our Lady Help of Christians

Tomorrow, Friday the 24 May, we celebrate the Patron of Australia, Our Lady, Help of Christians. This title was chosen at the first Bishops' Synod in 1844 and reiterated at the Bishops' Conference in 2001 and again pledged at World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney. We are indeed blessed to have such a good Patron. As Australians let us all be sure to say this short aspiration/prayer every day: Our Lady, Help of Christians, pray for me and mine. Let us, each one, entrust ourselves, our families, our College, and our nation to Our Lady Help of Christians that she may continually and continuously help us in our daily lives.

Our Lady Help of Christians is the title under which Australia honors its Patron.

The Napoleonic wars were ended in 1815. The Pope, Pius VII, had suffered imprisonment, 1809-1814, at the hand of Napoleon. Upon his release from prison and his triumphant return to Rome, the eternal city, Pope Pius VII set about initiating a feast day in honor of the Salesian Patron, Our Lady Help of Christians to be held on the memorial of his release 24th May.

The Australian Catholic Bishops met in Sydney for their 1st Synod in 1844 and chose this title as Patron of their young land.

Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity

“Did not our hearts burn…” (Luke 24:32)

A year ago today, my daughter Rosie was born. That week in The Calling, I wrote:

I have a brand new baby girl, and her name is Rosie Grace Hawkins. She was born yesterday morning. She is abso-lutely perfect. She also has Down syn-drome… Last week, I heard somebody say, “Perfection is not the lack of imperfec-tion; perfection is the inclusion and acceptance of those imperfections.” In my family, and amongst our friends, my little girl Rosie is perfect.

A year on, my feelings not only haven’t changed, they have deepened. The feeling I had on the day Rosie was born, and the feeling I have today on Rosie’s first birthday could be described using words like pride, gratitude and joy. This week however, as I have been leading our Year 9 students on their Emmaus Retreat, we have been using another phrase to describe the times when everything in our lives seems just right, perfect, like something very special is happening. In the Emmaus story from Luke’s gospel, one man utters the words, “Did not our hearts burn…” He says those words after finally recognizing Jesus as the person with whom he has been walk-ing all day, and while reflecting on the time he spent with Je-sus, he asks himself how it was possible that he did not recog-nize Jesus earlier. Life is like that I guess. Sometimes, we can be so caught up in the busyness of life, the challenges we are facing, the frustra-tions we are feeling, that we forget to stop, recognize and ap-preciate the beauty in our lives – in our relationships with our families and friends, in nature, in ourselves, and even in our own imperfections. In our Catholic faith, we can refer to these beautiful aspects as the “faces of Jesus” in our lives, not always immediately recognizable but always there nonetheless.

If I am to be completely honest, I would have to say that when we first heard the news of Rosie’s Down syndrome, we were upset, devastated even. We could not yet recognize the bless-ing we were being given. Thankfully, it didn’t take us long. How did we know that life was going to be great, and that Ro-sie was just perfect? We felt it. Our hearts did burn, and they still do today. As I have listened to our Year 9 men this week, and watched them participate in the various activities of the retreat, it has struck me that they fully understand this concept of recogniz-ing the faces of Jesus in their lives. They may not use that lan-guage, but they get it. They may not always be great at show-ing their appreciation for those people who are “Emmaus peo-ple” in their lives, but believe me, they do appreciate you! Their hearts do burn when their dad kicks the footy in the back yard with them; when their grandma gives them a bear hug and leaves lipstick on their cheek; when their teacher asks them how they went in their game on the weekend; when their annoying little sister follows them around the house all weekend. As they stop and think about those times, I have seen the looks on their faces as they have opened their eyes to the perfection of those aspects of their lives, and realized that their hearts did indeed burn, as has mine for the past twelve months.

Happy 1st birthday Rosie!

Jacob Ryan India Immersion

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of amazing activities and sights. However, on reflection I think a more effective way of explaining my true ex-perience of India might be by sharing this simple story. I can’t say coming to India is easy but being welcome makes it just that little bit more easy and that’s how I felt when I met the boys and girls from St Josephs in Kolkata. I never really got the chance to speak to many for the girls, but I was put with a group of boys and they greeted me with hugs and smiles, smiles that just make you feel as if you weren’t meeting these boys for the first time. You get this warm feeling that makes you never want to leave. I spoke to these boys until there was nothing else to talk about. The first day I met I helped them with their English and although it wasn’t the best not one of them wanted to give up. I thought about them that night and just thought, when I’m at school if it gets tough I start to zone out and not care as much. This was the first step for me per-sonally to change the things I do at school. I also noticed at their school they have more than double the amount of students in each class and all of the schooling equipment is old and hardly working. They don’t have laptops, new pens, pencils. They don’t even have a desk to themselves. The very next day I was given a once in a life time opportunity, for these boys were to take me around to where they live. I can honestly say at first I thought they would have a nice house or apartment. The first boy took me to his house and I wasn’t thinking much of it, I was looking at different buildings thinking I wonder if its this one or this one or… when he called my name as we were walking through a car park and said “come back here, my house is here”. I turned around thinking I haven’t seen a house near this carpark. Then I froze, there he was with a huge smile standing next to what looked to be a tarp next to a wooden shed no bigger than my garden shed. He said “come, come and see my family, meet my family.” I walked over not being able to say a word, every time I tried my voice would be soft and squeaky. So I gave myself a minute to take in what had just hap-pened. To see this boy excited to show me his house made me build up the courage to ask a question, I said “while you're at school does your Dad work” He said “no Dad”. I think at that moment when he told me he had no Dad I wanted to walk away for five minutes. Just the thought of me being in his shoes made my heart sink. Even

though I wanted to walk away, I knew I had to stay. So I sucked it up. He asked me to sit down on the only chair he had in his house which was a bit of concrete on two bricks this made me feel really welcome, even though he has little he gave me as much as he could. Just see-ing his house is enough to change a person’s view on how the world is. The next house one of the other boys showed me wasn’t as bad as the last one but how welcoming he and his family was, was just warming. He showed me his room, it had 4 rolled up beds about 2cms thick that they would unroll to fit 4 people in to sleep every night. This room was a bit bigger than my bathroom. The last boy that brought me to his house, his Dad was unable to work because he was burnt on his arm. This meant they were relying on the money they had saved. This boys house was right at the top of an apartment building, when I got there it was only him and his sister because his Mum was out trying to find some work. I asked how much does your Dad usually earn his sister replied with 2000 rupees a month which converts to about $40 AUD. I had more than that much money in my room. This was one of the prime events in India I will never forget those boys will never be forgotten!

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

As we move towards the end of Week 6 we move into the traditionally heavy assessment period of the term. Many as-signments become due in the next few weeks and then stu-dents move into exams. Overall the organisation and submission of assignments is very good. The majority of students adhere to the College assignment policy and submit work on time as per our as-sessment calendar. A reminder to students regarding the printing of hard copies. At this stage students are still asked to submit printed copies of their work at the beginning of the lesson nominated on the assessment calendar. Whilst the College will accept elec-tronic copies of assignment drafts, we still require final copies to be printed. Our advice is to avoid attempting to print work at school on the morning that a task is due. Queues are often long and if there is a problem with the printers then there is little fall back position for the boys.

If a student is absent on the due date, contact must be made with the class teacher or Head of Curriculum. Students in Year 12 are advised to cover their absence with a medical certificate. Although away, work still needs to be submitted on the due date. Perhaps a brother could bring a hard copy to the Curriculum Office. Failing that, it is ok to email the work as long as a hard copy of the script is submitted on the student’s return. Were this to happen however, we would assume that the email would come through first thing in the morning. Having an email of this nature arrive at the end of the day is open to concerns about boys taking the day off to complete the work. On Monday evening, 27 May, there will be an evening for Year 12 parents, boys and teachers. A flyer has been included in this edition of the Calling and has been emailed to all Year 12 families. The aim is to review the progress of Year 12s and provide an opportunity to spend time with Year 12 staff , Heads of Curriculum and the HouseDeans. It is proposed to commence the evening at 6:30pm with some catering, with a more formal presentation from 7:00pm.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

This week on Assembly I spoke to the Student Body inform-ing them that they had just over three weeks of school left this Term. The next couple of weeks are probably some of the most important in terms of Classwork, Assessment and fulfilling sporting commitments until the end of term. It is however a time when we are tired, exhausted and short fused. I spoke for the need to commence their revision and making sure they are balancing the many aspects of their lives. Some key points are listed below: Stay Calm Think before we react. Take time on the weekend to relax Spend time with family Spend time with yourself Stay Focused Be prepared Complete all work Begin studying for Exams Spend less time on Facebook PUBLIC TRANSPORT St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its pub-lic image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions.

YEAR 9 CAMPS Were held this week and the boys arrived back on Wednes-day and Friday afternoon very tired but happy. The feedback and general consensus from the boys was that they sur-prised themselves and now have a new belief and confi-dence in themselves that they are able to achieve things when they put their mind to it. Thanks to Mr Paulsen, Mrs Moro, Mr Greenfield, Mr Carlill, Mr Bowden, Mr Whiting, Mr Dowling, Student Teachers Emma and Nathan, Mr Crowley, Mr Bancroft, Mr Gardiner, Mr Locke, Mr Schultz and Mr

Vander Weide for their great efforts in ensuring the boys had a safe and productive camp.

CONTACTING YOUR SON If you need to get messages to your son or collect your son from school during the day please note that the only times the Student Office can make PA announcements to contact boys is at AM tutor group (8.28 am), morning tea (10.25 am), the beginning of Year 5-8 lunch (12.25 pm) and PM tutor group (2.50 pm). Also if you need to collect your son for an appointment, please ensure that a note is in his diary re-garding the appointment and that he knows to leave class at the appropriate time as we are not able to call over the PA other than the times listed above.

LOST PROPERTY There is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office. All of the items have no names and is very difficult to return to the original owner. At the end of this week we will be making our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul of any lost property which has not been claimed before then. Please come in and check it out or have your son check the items. ST JOHN FISHER DANCE Year 8 to 12. Friday 24 May. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $10.00. The venue is the Killoran Centre at St John Fisher. ID is required. Appropriate Clothing needs to be worn includ-ing footwear. It is expected that normal school rules and expectations will apply at this event. St Patrick’s College is the only school invited and it is expected that our young men are fine ambassadors for our College. No Singlet’s or Thongs allowed. It is expected that normal school rules and expectations will apply at this event.

The Red Shield Appeal’s collection day is on Sunday May 26. I invite students to volunteer two hours (9am to 11am) to help the Salvos to collect money for their very worthwhile work. Students are asked to wear their school uni-form and to meet on the Callan Centre steps at 8:30am.on Sunday May 26. Students will be put into teams and given instructions on how to doorknock and collect. At 11am students will be driven to the counting house which is at The Salvation Army at Taigum (Corner Handford & Roghan Rds, Taigum). and be involved in counting the money, Students will then be taken back to St Patrick’s College to be picked up at 11:45am, or can be picked up from The Salvation Army at Taigum at 11:30am. Mr Michael Phillips Ryan House

Ryan House continues to be led from the front by Daniel, Liam and the rest of the Year 12 cohort. Impressively we are never short of a volunteer from the Year 12’s in time of need. The ‘newbies’ in Year 5 continue to grow in confidence – most are heavily involved in CIC sport this term. The Year 11’s ran a very successful ‘ice cream spider’ stall last week raising money for Kiva our House charity. This week Year 9 Ryan students em-barked on the annual camp and retreat program. This year is designed to challenge the boys further and hopefully build a stronger team. CHESS ‘At last we won something’ was the cry from one of the Ryan House students seated in Assembly upon the announcement of our success. Yes, Ryan House had won the Inter-House Chess competition. This was a major upset as we were seeded into the 4-6th place group but we came 4th in every year level except Year 11 who won. Consistency won it for us. A big thanks to all who gave up their lunch times to bring the shield home! DEBATING Interhouse debating has continued over two terms with both our junior and senior teams gaining mixed results. The boys have given up their time on a regular basis to put together convincing arguments on a variety of topics. Junior team consists of: Matt Smith, Tom McNee and Jake Stevens. The Senior team is led by Pat Cashman, Nick Wockner, Callum Molloy, Carter Bell and Josh Sutton.

CROSS COUNTRY Our overall placing in the Inter-House cross country defies how well the boys did on the day. We had a number of students finish in the top ten across a number of year levels and yet we placed 8th overall. Everyone seemed to en-joy the day and again thanks for your participation. RYAN HOUSE STAFF We welcomed back Mr Mike McGrath this week after his well deserved leave where he travelled extensively. Mrs Janet Gar-side also returned at the beginning of the term after leave (also well deserved) in Term 1. Daniel Seagrott and Liam Roberts Ryan House Leaders

THEATRESPORTS After an impressive victory in their first round of competition, our Senior Theatresport Team is competing in the Quarter Finals next Monday evening in the Waterford Building. These nights provide great entertainment as our boys compete in improvised dramatic games against five other highly skilled school teams. Our team comprising Gerard Denkes, Ryan Hollyman, Johannes Hoehen-steiger, Callum Butkus and Chris Merrick are a great unit and deserve to have a large and enthusiastic band of supporters to cheer

CANTEEN UPDATES To all those parents and supporters that have assisted in the canteen at Curlew Park over the past few weeks your assistance has been greatly appreciated and we look forward to your ongoing support throughout the year, I think most helpers are having a great time. The guys on the BBQ were kept busy all day last Saturday cooking up a great atmosphere. A number of parents and coaches from the competing schools have com-mented to us over the past weeks on the great quality of food and the facilities around the canteen area. Our next home game is Back to Shorncliffe Day which is a huge day with lots of organisation involved. Can we please ask if you see that the canteen volunteers are struggling jump in and lend a hand, it may only be for ½ an hour but it all helps.

Well done all involved. The canteen helpers raffle winner this week was Linda Bryen, congratulations Linda your hard work paid off. Make sure if you are helping in the canteen or in the BBQ area that you put your entry into the draw for the next great prize. We are now over halfway through the rugby and football term and have started to make arrangements for the canteen for basketball in term 4. Amanda Stringfellow has graciously put her hand up to convene the canteen at home games this year in the Callan Centre, if you see Amanda around and would like to assist her please feel free to discuss your interest with her as all assistance is welcome. The Sport Support Group is looking into the purchase of seating around the canteen area at Curlew Park for future events so parents can take a moment out to sit and relax, we will keep you updated.

COORDINATORS WANTED Functions coordinator Sport Support is looking for a person or persons that would be interested in organising a number of functions/events throughout the year, if you would like to get involved please email [email protected] to discuss further. Cricket canteen convenor We are looking for a Canteen Convenor for cricket at Curlew Park for the 2014 season. If your son is one of those boys that just love their cricket and you happen to be there it would be a great way to spend the day in the shade and able to watch the cricket from a great vantage point. If you can help please discuss with David Row, Ian Johannessen, Neil Gordon or email your interest to [email protected]

TOUR FUND RAISING Over recent weeks the Sport Support Group have arranged raffles to assist sports tour groups raise funds for upcoming tours. If you see the boys running around Curlew Park at Back to Shorncliffe Day please support the boys where you can. The winner of the Volleyball raffle from last term was Michael Merrick. Congratulations Michael and thanks for the support.
