Calling-Issue 27 (01 September 2011)

Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, This week was a significant week for our Year 12 students as they completed their QCS testing program on Tuesday and Wednesday. I was impressed with the conscientious approach taken by the students and am confident that their results will be very positive. My thanks to Mr Chris Campbell and the other staff who have been involved in preparing the students and those who assisted on Tuesday and Wednesday. Term 3 is rapidly drawing to a conclusion with just over 2 weeks left in the term. With the end of term approaching this also means that exams are also not far away. I have mentioned this many times previously, however, I will again reiterate how important it is for the students to prepare well for their exams with regular study and revision. The multitude of other activities are important, however a strong focus on the educational aspects is critical. I remind parents that their sons should be doing homework each night and also be revising work in preparation for the upcoming exams. Our sporting teams prepare for their matches, our bands rehearse for their performances and it is critical that our students study for their exams. Last Saturday the AIC season began with matches against St Peter’s Lutheran College. I had the pleasure in watching the 1st V team play a great game against St Peter’s. Both teams played hard but the game was also played in a good spirit. In my time at St Patrick’s College it was probably one of the best games I have witnessed, both for the skill and the sportsmanship. I congratulate the players from both teams and their coaches. There was also a very large number of St Patrick’s supporters who cheered their team to victory. Well done to the students and other supporters who were in the Callan Centre last Saturday. Last night 22 Students across a number of year levels completed their sacramental preparations with Mass. They were supported by a large number of parents, family and friends. It was a wonderful sense of community and I congratulate the young men who received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Communion or Confirmation. My thanks also to Father Liam, Mr Hawkins and Mrs Righetti for the work they did in preparing the evening. Finally this week, I encourage people to organise their tables for the Trivia Night on Saturday, 10 September. This is always a great night. This year it will be held in the Waterford Building for the first time and this should ensure that it is a successful evening. Come along, have some fun and support the Sports Program at St Patrick’s College. Have a great week. God Bless Dr Michael Carroll College Principal 01 September 2011 No. 27

Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family,

This week was a significant week for our Year 12 students as they completed their QCS testing program on Tuesday and Wednesday. I was impressed with the conscientious approach taken by the students and am confident that their results will be very positive. My thanks to Mr Chris Campbell and the other staff who have been involved in preparing the students and those who assisted on Tuesday and Wednesday.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM— CHRIS CAMPBELL

On Tuesday and Wednesday Year 12 students completed the Queensland Core Skills Test. Throughout the two days the approach and attitude of the students was first class. Boys arrived early and were well pre-pared. During the lengthy testing process all students applied themselves magnificently. Final results for the papers are not available until December and will be used to assist in the calculation of OP scores. Many thanks to Jim Mann and his staff for the cooking of the QCS breakfast. Thank you to Maxine Nott for her organisation of this. Unfortunately for the Year 12s there is little respite from the pressure of Term 3 as the end of term exam block commences on Friday and runs throughout next week. It is strongly advised that year 12s adjust social, working and sporting commitments to concentrate fully on these very important exams. In the final week of term, Year 12s commence classes for term 4 work. Attendance during this week is com-pulsory for all students. As well, on Monday 12 September, Mrs Rotta and I will speak to the Year 12s re-garding the QTAC process. A parent/student information evening will be held on Tuesday 13 September commencing at 7pm. All year 12s are asked to bring their QTAC booklet with them to school in this final week. Mrs Rotta will be available to see Year 12s regarding QTAC applications throughout that week. Exam block for Year 11 will be held in the final week of term. As well, there will be exams for students in other year levels on various days throughout the final weeks of term. Please check assessment calendars to verify days and times. Boys in Years 5-10 are expected to be at school each day in the last two weeks. Many thanks to the Mentors, parents and students involved in the SET Planning day last Friday. Most Year 10s have now finalised subjects for 2012/13. The next stage of this process is the construction of the Col-lege timetable FOR 2012

INDONESIAN NOTICE OF ASSESSMENT Year 5, 6 and 7 will be completing Indonesian tests next week during their lesson. Year 5 will be completing a Listening test, Year 6 a Reading test and Year 7 a Listening test. This is a slight change to the assessment calendar which says that Year 7 will have a Reading test. In the assessment calendar 8F has a writing assignment due on 12 September. The due date is now 13 September.

YEAR 12 QCS TEST Congratulations to all our Year 12 students who sat the QCS Test this week. The positive, calm attitude shown by all the boys was excellent to see. There was a degree of nervousness about but a very quiet de-termined manner as well. We certainly hope the boys’ effort is matched by their results at the end of the year. THE YEAR 5 CAMP OCTOBER 12-14 All Year 5 students have received an information package for parents. The permission slip and Medical Forms should be returned to classroom teachers over the next two weeks. If there are any questions or con-cerns please contact me. EXAM BLOCK PRIVILEGES All students in Years 11 and 12 have what is known as block exams. This allows boys to stay home when they do not have an exam. This time should be used in a productive way that will assist them to achieve the best possible results. It is definitely not a time to get extra hours at their part time jobs. The library is avail-able for those students who wish to study at school. Some items that need to be reinforced are: Block exams is a privilege not a right. All normal school rules apply. Students must attend school in full school uniform, even if they are only coming to school for a short

period of time. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds for any reason during the day if they are at

school for the whole day. IPods and mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. LOST PROPERTY At the end of the term any lost property that is not claimed and not named will be either returned to the Uniform Shop to be resold or will be given to St Vincent de Paul. ORIENTATION EVENING 2012 The next intake of new students to St Patrick’s will begin with the 2012 Orientation Evening on 10 Octo-ber. This is an important occasion as we welcome the new families to St Patrick’s and it would be wonderful to have a number of present families to assist with this evening. We require parents to assist with the meet-ing and greeting, a welcome BBQ, helping serve drinks in the tuckshop and with supper. If you can help please contact Mrs Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office (3631 9070).

Mathew Makot is not just one of the most inspirational students I have ever met but he is also one of the most inspirational hu-man beings I have ever met. Coming to Australia as a former child soldier escaping his war torn homeland of Southern Sudan he now stands on the cusp of a great milestone in his life of graduating high school. I’m sure Mathew would tell you that this is one of the many things that a truly great democracy offers people from all backgrounds. At the end of last term Mathew entered the Australian Parlia-ments “My First Speech” Competition. As part of this Mathew had to take the role as a newly elected minister speaking on issues that matter in his area. While Mathew did not win, the judges, including Members of Parliament, were so impressed they wanted to bring him down to Canberra for a special meeting with the Ministers. While in Canberra he met the Deputy PM, the Speaker of the House and even had a quick encounter with Prime Minister Julia Gillard. In all meetings Mathew spoke very passionately about issues affecting refugees in Australia and how much he thought Australia as a nation represents democracy in its truest form. Mathew sat in Question Time that afternoon and while the Ministers heavily debated the Craig Thompson scandal the Speaker of the House stopped Pparliament to introduce Mathew. To quote the speaker

“I inform the House that we have present in the gallery this afternoon Mathew Makot. Mathew's journey from Southern Sudan to be here in the gallery as a year 12 student at St Patricks College, Shorncliffe, is quite an inspir-ing journey. He gained a highly recommended in our My First Speech competition. He is a most welcome guest here to observe our robust democracy—even though it might be overly robust. Welcome, Mathew. “

Honourable members: Hear, hear!

Mathew’s journey is a truly remarkable one and a truly inspiring one. I’m sure many of us would be proud to have a remarkable young man like Mathew represent us in Parliament. The High Court has made its decision about the current boat people and deals with Malaysia, I’m sure issues like this polarise many people and I certainly don’t want to get on a political rant. However, one thing I know hearing stories of people like Mathew I am thankful to live in a democracy where every individual is given equal opportunities to succeed.

CAMPUS MINISTER — PAUL CORFIELD

On behalf of the Parents and Friends Association of St Patrick's College, we would really like to thank the following Mums and Dads who helped out with the free sausage sizzle on Tuesday 23 August. Maggie McGowan, Sara Cronk, Vicky Wolstenholme, Sharyn Mula, Lesley Palmer, Mary Brodie, Mandy Crossan, Stephanie Ingeri, Len Ingeri, Andrea Sked and Peter Frauenfelder Without their help and support we would not have been able to provide 75KG of sausages, cooked to perfection by our very own Master Chefs, and prepared on a delicious slice of bread. Your classic Aussie favourite! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents who regularly attend our monthly meetings. I encourage other Dads and Mums to do the same. Other than the obvious work achieved by the P&F, such as fund-raising and supporting school events, the Association can also act as the "voice" of the parents within the school com-munity. This really needs to be emphasised in light of possible changes flagged by an article in Tuesday's Courier Mail entitled, "Catholic schools scramble for cash". So, please, if you want a say in your son's education, DO ONE THING and come to a meeting! Finally, a DATE CLAIMER- Sunday 23 October . On the deck of the brand new Waterford Building, the P&F will be hosting a springtime, Jazz and Shiraz afternoon. Enjoy an afternoon of food, fine wine and music. Mark it on your calendars and highlight it in your social diaries. An opportunity for both "old" and "new" families within the school community to meet, to mix, to chat and enjoy each other's company. More details to follow.

To the new students and family St Patrick’s College 2012 On behalf of the St Patrick’s College Cricket Support Group (CSG), I extend a warm welcome to you and your family to the St Patrick’s community. Over the past couple of years, the CSG has been working with the College to develop cricket through various avenues, including students competing in the Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association half season (pre-Christmas) club compe-tition. The additional competition, clinics and coaching saw the players gain valuable experience and that has been re-flected in the school’s results. The CSG also works with the school with the provision of cricket infrastructure, including additional practise nets, bowling machine and top dressing of the main ovals. Parents are most welcome to join the CSG and/or provide feed-back regarding projects that will benefit the players and facilities. In 2010, the College entered 16 teams from U10 (current year 4) to U16/17 in the BNJCA half season competition to enhance the players’ skill levels and enjoyment of cricket. An invitation is extended to your son/s to join the St Patrick’s teams for the upcoming competition before they commence at the College. Your son/s may well find as mine did that they will forge friendships that helped ease the concern of walking into a new school. Brief details of the competition are:

Specialist coaching clinic – probable date Sunday 2 October 2011 - to be confirmed; First round: Saturday, October 8; Final round: Saturday, December 3; Cost: $70 (clubs charge around $110); and Inclusions: Player registration, coaching clinic, perpetual shield, and end of season awards event and BBQ.

Please contact us before 2 September if you would like further information or to register for the half season competition.

Limited Edition Morven Painting Dr Carroll has commissioned local artist Werner Langer to paint Morven 200 limited edition prints have been reproduced from this. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the P & F for future projects. The artist Mr Werner Langer is a local artist who has lived in the Sandgate area for over 40 years. He has been a photographer for most of his life graduating from the College of Art in Brisbane in 1974. Werner had a studio at Fortitude Valley for many years and worked in various fields including advertising, manu-facturers, retailers, and photographing weddings. Mr Langer is married with two children. Werner has produced many other watercolours of the local area and various other areas of interest. If you are inter-ested in viewing his work you can contact Werner on 0408 744119. All proceeds from any sales will be donated to the College Parents and Friends. Werner researched the history of Morven before he began the project. His inspiration came from the sym-bolism of the College rising to glory in 1952 as it was reborn as a College. For this reason Werner chose to paint Morven in the early morning as the sun rose. At this time of day the clouds often sweep across the sky. He also chose to paint Morven flanked by trees as it originally was back in the 1950’s. The paintings are presented in a light green matt and ready to frame in an 8x 10 frame. They are availa-ble for $29.95 each. If you are interested in purchasing a painting please contact the College Office on 3631 9000.
