“Facere et Docere – To Do and To Teach” Farewell, Br Col.

Facere et docere – this is the motto of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. I have always admired its simplicity – we are Christian Brothers; we are here to educate, and to get things done. And this is what the Brothers have done since Edmund Rice began the Congregation in Ireland over two hundred years ago. When Br Ambrose Treacy arrived in Australia, his goal was simple – to do and to teach. And here we are today in Queensland with schools including St. Patrick’s, Nudgee, Terrace, St. Laurence’s, St. James’, St. Edmund’s, St. Brendan’s, Ignatius Park and numerous Flexible Learning Centres, all a result of the simple goal of the Brothers – to do and to teach. What an amazing legacy, all thanks to the Christian Brothers. I have been fortunate in my life to know many Christian Brothers, and today I call many of them my friends. In recent years, the Brothers have faced many difficulties and demons as a result of some abhorrent actions of an extremely small minority of their Congregation. I have admired the way in which the Brothers have faced these challenges – compassionately and practically. It is once again testament to their simple motto. At St. Patrick’s in recent years, we have been fortunate to have two Christian Brothers on staff – this is a rarity in Edmund Rice schools these days. Br Chris Pritchard is obviously still at our

College working tirelessly, often behind the scenes in a variety of ways. His quiet and helpful approach is a daily walking example of the Christian Brothers’ motto – simple and effective – to do and to teach. Today, we farewell our other greatly admired and loved Christian Brother, Br Col Fitzgerald. Br Col has been unwell for some months but only finished his work at St. Patrick’s last year after twenty-five years of dedicated service. He is greatly missed by many, but particularly perhaps by the students and staff of Coffey House, along with many other staff in various areas of the College (maybe also the local TAB and his fellow colleagues who enjoyed the odd cigarette). Br Col would often walk from office to office with a bag of Minties, a sly grin and perhaps a sarcastic, dry comment about the latest fad in teaching. He would arrive at each major College event with his camera to capture history, not wanting to be a part of it. I often think the reason he took up photography was so he didn’t have to be in any photos himself! When Br Col turned 80, he wasn’t happy that it got a mention, let alone a cake and a bit of a party. When I told him once that we were going to be recognising long-serving staff at Celebration of Excellence, and asked him to be present so he could be acknowledged, he replied succinctly, “That won’t be happening, Matt.” Br Col wasn’t interested in any of that “hoo-ha” – he kept it simple. To do and to teach. What a wonderful example for us all.

Rest in peace, Br Col. You will be missed.

Mr Charles Brauer AP Student Formation

THE “TRUST BUCKET”

Our College strongly values the formation of right

relationships. Much time and energy is devoted by students,

staff and parents in ensuring that we are working, not only

towards the same outcome, but in a manner by which we

develop a sense of connectedness, a sense of trusting one

another.

Earlier this week I was fortunate to be audience to a fellow

teacher who presented Stephen Covey’s (2006) ideas on the

importance of trust between individuals when working

collaboratively. My thoughts immediately drifted to how we

use this same idea when working with members of our St.

Patrick’s community. I sometimes use the “trust bucket”

analogy when assisting students to understand the important

role they play in the many interactions and relationships at

school.

The “trust bucket” is supported with what Covey (2006)

outlines in the table below. The bucket can be filled, emptied,

refilled and shared with others.

While listening to my fellow teacher share her views on how

these realities apply at her school, it became very clear to me

that the emphasis our College community places on the role

of trust in any relationship must be maintained.

If you haven’t had a go at using the “trust bucket” I’d

encourage you to do so.

Covey, S. (2006) Th e Speed of Trust: Th e One Th ing That Changes Everything

YEAR 7 STUDENTS WILL ATTEND THE CIC ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT QSAC ON WEDNESDAY 10 SEPTEMBER All Year 7 students must wear their formal uniform and will be transported by bus to and from the carnival. More information will be sent home regarding this in the next few days in the form of an information letter and email to parents. Normal uniform requirements and arrival/departure times to/from school will apply.

REMINDERS Below are some key matters that need immediate attention by families:

Hair and Grooming Please ensure that your son’s hair meets our expectations in relation to our Hair and Grooming Policy. We are striving to ensure that we are consistent with applying our policies when following up with students.

College Backpacks To promote our College uniform, all students need to ensure they are using a College backpack to carry their belongings to and from school. College tour bags and other types of bags are not acceptable. Your ongoing attention to and continued support of the above reminders and of all College policies and procedures is greatly appreciated. Please contact me or your son’s House Dean if you have any queries or concerns. Myth Reality

Trust is soft. Trust is hard, real and quantifiable. It measurably affects both speed and cost.

Trust is slow. Nothing is as fast as the speed of trust.

You either have trust or you don’t. Once lost, trust cannot be restored.

Trust can be both created and destroyed. Though difficult, in most cases lost trust can be restored.

You can’t teach trust. Trust can be effectively taught and learned, and it can become a leverageable, strategic advantage.

You establish trust one person at a time.

Establishing trust with the one establishes trust with the many.

Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

Over the past couple of weeks it has been quite busy in regard to sport at the College. We had numerous students competing at Bramble Bay District Trials and Metropolitan North Regional Trials. Our CIC Basketball and Tennis is nearing a close whilst our AIC Basketball and Tennis has started extremely positively. With regard to Track and Field, our CIC squad is gearing up for the CIC Track & Field Championships on Wednesday 10 September at QSAC ,whilst our AIC athletes competed at the first AIC Track & Field Lead Up Meet last Friday evening. Added to all of the above we have had students competing in various Volleyball Tournaments over the past month as well as competing in Hockey. Thank you to all the parents who have supported us by ensuring that their son is dressed appropriately when attending SPC sporting events. There was a noticeable improvement last weekend at all sporting events. We still had a few students wearing the incorrect attire. We will not hesitate in asking students incorrectly dressed to either change into the correct attire or leave the sporting venue. On Wednesday 3 September, SPC GYM welcomed a visit by Damon Kelly (O lympic W eightlifter) who has just returned from the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Damon took 24 students through some basic lifting techniques and to promoted the sport of weightlifting to the wider community.

SPC had teams in: Year 7 Competitive Division (7C) Year 7 Participation Division (7P) Year 5/6 Blue Division (Grads) Year 5/6 Red Division (Tai) The 7C team played 6 a side on a full size court on grass, sand and indoor. The other teams played their matches on grass on modified courts (badminton size) and with 4 a side. Over the course of the day SPC played a wonderful style of volleyball where the coaches had the boys attempting to use 3 contacts wherever possible. Of course, at times it did look like tennis but overall it was very impressive. The results were absolutely outstanding with the St. Patrick’s teams losing a total of only 5 matches and winning 19. Final results 7C – 1st , 7P – 4th, 5/6Grads – 1st, 5/6TAI – 2nd SPC GYM Term 3 Gym Timetables are now up on connect.
