Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Welcome back to the 2010 school year. I hope that your Christmas break was both enjoyable and relaxing. I suspect it is by now somewhat of a distant memory. 2010 is shaping up as another great year. Already the teaching staff have been busy preparing for their classes and work in the classroom whilst many staff, parents and students have been involved with the co-curricular program over the holidays. My thanks go to all involved with the Swim Camp, Volleyball training, Cricket trials, Rugby training and Christian Brothers Cricket Week. I am confident that all the preparation for activities both in and outside the classroom will bear dividends as the year progresses. With the start of a new year it is an opportunity for new staff to join the College Community. I wish to acknowledge and welcome the following teaching staff:- Matthew Hawkins - Assistant Principal—Identity Rebecca Hewitt - Drama, Core A Andrea Hey - Learning Support Aaron Kerr - Year 5 I also welcome the following non-teaching staff: Louise Mulhall - Laboratory Assistant Jo Edgar - Learning Support Assistant Donna Wyers - Learning Support Assistant Max Matacchioni - IT Support I also welcome the following staff who are returning from leave:- Peter Watts, Lee Dowling, Lorraine O’Sullivan As well as a number of staff beginning at St Patrick’s College, there are also many new students and new families beginning their journey. To all, I extend a very warm welcome and I am confident that you will find St Patrick’s College a great school and a wonderful community. Next Monday night, 1 February, is the Year 5-8 Parent Information Night and House Family Evening. I would encourage all families, new and continuing, to attend this night in order to meet other families, your son’s teachers and House Dean, and to begin experiencing the St Patrick’s College Community first hand. The evening will begin with at 5.30pm and will be finished by 8.30pm. Over the holidays a significant amount of work was carried out both at the school and at Curlew Park. There have been some significant developments at Curlew Park and I will provide more details in next week’s edition of the Calling. The commencement of the new building program has been delayed a little and is now expected to occur towards the end of this term. At the end of last year we farewelled our Year 12 students. Since their departure they have received their OP scores and I wish to congratulate them on their outstanding results. Special congratulations go to Matthew Eustace and Michael Bardini for gaining an OP1. Overall the results were very good with 20% of the students gaining an OP1-5, 55% an OP1-10 and 85% gaining and OP1-15. These are amongst the best results the College has received and it is indicative of the hard work of the boys and the dedication of the staff. I particularly thank Mr David Gardiner and Mr Chris Campbell for managing the preparation program in 2010. I will continue to make reference to the importance of teaching and learning throughout the year. Over the next few weeks I will provide further information regarding developments and directions for 2010. However, I wish to conclude by again welcoming everyone back to the 2010 school year and, in particular, extending a welcome to our new families and students. Have a great week. • Welcome to the new school year- A very warm welcome to all our families for the start of what we hope will be a safe, happy and successful year. I encourage all students to follow three simple guidelines: Respect ourselves and others; Respect the learning environment, and Respect the St Patrick’s environment. The standard we expect from the boys is high and challenges them to grow. A strong sense of personal and school pride comes from the way the students present themselves at school. I have outlined a number of focus areas for 2010. • Uniform: All students are reminded that the uniform is to be worn correctly at all times. This includes shirts tucked in and socks pulled up. Students in Years 11 and 12 must wear their school ties at all times and ties must be worn correctly with top buttons done up. • Hair and Grooming: In order to maintain a high standard of dress and grooming so as to present an appropriate image of the College to the broader community and to each other, it is an expectation that hair be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times. • School Bag: All students in Years 5 to 10 are expected to carry the St Patrick’s School Bag to and from school each day. It is highly recommended that students in Years 11 and 12 who have a St Patrick’s College bag use it also. Mobile Phones, Ipods and other electronic devices are not permitted to be used in the College grounds. If a student is caught using one of these electronic devices a consequence will occur. • Student Absences: Parents are requested to telephone the College Absentee line on 3631 9077 by 9am when their son is absent. An SMS text message will be sent to parents’ mobile phones at approximately 11am each day if we believe a student is absent from school or classes without explanation. • Lateness: The school bell goes at 8.28am and all boys are expected to be present at this time. On occasion, a bus or

train may be late but where a boy is repeatedly late without any valid reason, he will be required to make up time after school. • Public Transport: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. No food or drink is to be consumed on the buses. • Lockers: Each student in Year 8 to 12 has been issued with a locker together with a combination lock. It is the student’s responsibility not to disclose his combination to anybody. A student who damages or loses his lock will be required to replace it at a cost of $15. • Diaries: Our student Diaries are an important organisation and communication tool. All College policies and procedures are located within the diary; I ask that you take the time to read and discuss these together with your son. The diary is school property and I ask that you assist in ensuring your son’s diary is free from stickers and graffiti. To help improve the students’ organisation we expect them to have their diaries in every lesson. All homework should be recorded in the diary so parents will be able to check what homework and assignments the boys have. To promote communication between students staff and families, we ask that every student has his diary signed by his parent/caregiver every week. This is necessary for all students from Year 5 to Year 12. Notes regarding absence, lateness, early departure or general enquiries should be written in your son’s diary. Lost diaries will need to be replaced at a cost of $15. • School Bags: To assist in reducing congestion students are not permitted to carry school bags during the day. Students may use a Drawstring Bag to carry books, subject equipment and sports gear for lessons.

• ID Photos- Every student will have his photo taken this Thursday, 28 January, for his ID card. These will be distributed in a few weeks and will be important for borrowing from the Resource Centre, public transport and general identification. • Year 6 Camp will operate during Week 4 (22 February to 24 February). All Year 7 students are expected to attend the camp as part of their overall curriculum. Forms for the camp have been distributed this week and must be returned by Friday, 5 February. • Year 8 Camp and Retreat Program will operate during Week 5 (22 February to 26 February). All Year 8 students are expected to attend the camp and retreat as part of their overall curriculum. Forms for the camp have been distributed this week and must be returned by Friday, 5 February. • Year 8 Immunisation BCC forms were posted at the end of last year and must be returned completed by Friday, 29 January, 2010. • Year 5, 6, 7, and 8 Parent Information and House Family Night will be held next Monday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. It is an important social and curriculum evening and I invite every Year 5-8 family to attend. The evening is an opportunity to meet your son’s House Dean, Group Tutor, Big Brother, Classroom Teachers and other parents from the same year level and House.

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you all again, and if there is any way I can assist you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

STUDIES

Chris Campbell Welcome back to all students and parents for what is shaping as a very rewarding academic year. You will notice in the College calendar that there are a number of parent information evenings being held in the coming weeks. I will speak at these meetings about important information relevant to the academic program at St. Patrick’s this year. Could I ask that parents consider making attendance at these meetings a priority? In the second half of the student Diary, you will find a number of policies relevant to the academic life of the college. Could I ask all parents and boys to familiarize themselves with these policies? In the case of our assignment policy it is particularly important that everyone is familiar with each of the steps. QSA policy indicates

that schools can only accept assignment work submitted “on or before” the due date. Hence, if students are absent on the day of the assignment deadline, every effort must be made to bring the work to the school with an accompanying medical certificate. If work is not received on the due date, then the College is required to only use work completed beforehand such as drafts. It is outside both QSA and College policy to accept work which is offered after the due date deadline. This is relevant for both written and spoken tasks. In order to assist students in their preparation and organization of work, there will be a greater emphases on the submission of drafts in 2010. I will speak more on this next week.

A small number of students from Years 9-12 have made requests about changing subjects. Please be aware that numbers in classes are very tight and often students are requesting access into subjects which are already full. Also, in many cases it is very difficult to pick up a subject where the other students have already spent 12 months. It is often a better option to remain in the chosen subject with a view to commencing the year with a fresh approach. Please do not hesitate to contact me at the College if I can be of any assistance.

COLLEGE DEAN

David Gardiner

Welcome back to a new school year, and a special warm welcome to all the families new to St Patrick’s. I hope everyone enjoyed the break and the time with their families. I was fortunate to spend three and a half weeks in India with Father Liam Horsfall, Mr. Van der Weide and seven Year 11 students. It was an honour to travel to so many places which were very significant for Father Horsfall. Over the coming weeks we will be sharing some of the special times from our immersion experience. I encourage all students to get involved in the life of the College and to do their best. The hard work needs to commence immediately for all students, and being involved in activities across the College will help students feel a part of the place. Having a sense of belonging is important to self esteem and success. The College Dean role was a new one last year for St Patrick’s. Some of my responsibilities include: - being a member of the College Leadership Team; supporting the Pastoral Care and Studies of the Senior students; being the CLT liaison person for the Years 5 -7 area; coordinating the Marketing and

Community enhancement of the College; and co-ordinating key whole school events for the College. Please feel free to contact me regarding any of these issues across the College. As Dr Carroll mentioned, the Year 12 results for 2009 were very positive. I was quite pleased to hear parents and students indicate the boys were happy with their results and most seem to have obtained their first preference. I would like to thank all the teachers for their wonderful ongoing support of the boys in and out of the classroom. The strong support certainly is a major factor in the very good results. We have already started processes to support the 2010 Seniors with their work. The media have been discussing the launch this week of the myschool website. It will provide parents with an opportunity to compare St Patrick’s Year 5, 7 and 9 NAPLAN results with those of up to 60 other schools. The website is www.myschool.edu.au . Although the St Patrick’s results compare favourably with those of other schools, we need to be aware the website is just one bit of information. Many factors contribute to

the success of a school. At St Patrick’s we certainly have a strong focus on academic achievement but we are also interested in the holistic education of the boys.

St Patrick’s operates an International Student Exchange Program and we are pleased to welcome five overseas students this week. Sebastian Arciniega, Lucas De Gelder and Max Lattimer are from Vancouver College in Canada; and Nikolas James and Brendan Holmes are from Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati USA. The boys are appreciating the sunny weather of Queensland and the host families are doing a great job of ensuring they see as much of our state as possible. A massive game of Australia Day cricket has been a highlight so far.

Blazer fittings will be available on Wednesday, 3 February, in the Uniform Shop. A $60 deposit will be required.

It is with great pleasure that I add my welcome to the St Patrick’s community for 2010. I would particularly like to welcome all of the new students and families and wish you a very happy and rewarding time at St Pat’s. When I spoke to the new students on Monday, I told them that I know a little about how they felt that day, as I too was going through the emotions – excitement and some nerves – associated with being “new”. Based on my experience over the past couple of weeks, I can assure new families that your boys will be made to feel very welcome here. You are entering into a school community which is proud to be a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. You will hear people talk about the values for which we stand, but you will also see those values in action. Values such as compassion,

empathy and justice will be evident not only in the classroom and the playground, but also through the extensive service and ministry programs which operate at St Pat’s. You will have received a form to complete outlining the service activities on offer and asking boys to nominate how they would like to contribute. I encourage boys to involve themselves in this very important aspect of our school, and return those forms to Mrs Righetti in the Student Office. Our identity as an authentic Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition will also be clear through our sequential retreat program from Years 5-12, and through our liturgical celebrations. I draw Year 12 boys’ parents’ attention specifically to our first major liturgical celebration of the year, the Year 12 Induction Mass on Friday, 12 February.

More information will be forthcoming regarding this important day in our school calendar. Also for Year 12 families, the first of our Kairos Retreats will take place soon, and parents of our first group have received invitations to our Parent Information Evening occurring tonight, January 28. Please call either Mrs Righetti or our Campus Minister, Mr Mark Ellison, if you would like more information regarding this. Finally, I wish the entire St Patrick’s community all the very best for 2010. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming days, weeks and months. Please feel free to contact me at the school any time with any queries about the Identity (previously Mission) area of the College, either by phone 36319021 or by email [email protected].

Formation of a Canteen Sub-Committee

A Canteen Sub‐Committee has been formed to coordinate the operation of the canteens at home games.  The committee will ensure that canteens are supplied with stock to be operational at our sons’ home sporting fixtures.

The canteens are provided as a service supporting our sons in their chosen sports.  Any profits as a result of canteen

operations form part of the Sport Support Group's fundraising, which is then reinvested into St Patrick's sport.

The Canteen sub‐committee is made up of a small group of parents whose sons play in various St Patrick's sporting teams, and like you, enjoy being on the sideline at their sons' games. Therefore they  are not available to be at the canteen all day.  All but one of these parents are AIC parents (Years 8 to 12).  More CIC parents are required.

There are opportunities for more parents to become involved and assist in the canteens.  We require parents (both CIC and AIC) who can commit to morning and/or afternoon shifts overseeing either the Curlew Park or the Callan Centre canteen.

Please bear in mind that there are only 4‐6 home games per season and the canteen is usually only run for Cricket, Volleyball,

and Rugby.  We are looking at the viability of providing canteen services for other sporting fixtures’ home games.

The canteens will be stocked and ready to go at each event.  Responsibilities would extend to:

Assisting with set up and open (mornings) or close and clean up (afternoons) Barbeque

Maintaining supplies on the day (ie food in ovens to be kept warm; drinks in fridge to be kept cold) Safekeeping of takings

Overseeing daily volunteers

We look forward to hearing from you.  Please contact either Anne (mob) 0404050167 or Noelene (mob) 0438067913. _____________________________________________

CANTEEN ROSTER ‐ 30 JANUARY ‐ VOLLEYBALL (Callan Centre) / CRICKET (Curlew Park)

URGENT assistance is required in the canteens this Saturday.

It is compulsory for all teams to provide adult canteen assistance prior to their sons’ games.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  Longer commitments would be very welcome.

Please phone Anne or Noelene with your availability.

THE PRIORITY OF ANY PERSONS ASSISTING IN THE CANTEEN IS BEING ON THE

SIDELINE FOR YOUR SON'S GAME !

____________________________________________________________________________ CROCKPOT OR SLOW COOKER

If you have a crockpot or slow cooker that you no longer use, would you consider donating it to the St Patrick's Sport Support

Group for use in the canteen?

Please phone Anne or Noelene.
