The spreading mini markets nearby small shops (warung kecil) especially inDenpasar seemed devastating. A number of small shop owners have stated theiruneasy situation. “I use to sell essentials yet now my goods to sell are less. Minimarkets can give cheaper prices and we small shop owners felt kicked out andignored,” one unnamed shop owner at Nusa Kambangan Street, Dauh Puri, stated last Saturday (21/5).

The mini market that has lowered their in-come this time is an Alfa Midi around the area.Apparently this mini market was sealed in themorning by Police Civil Service yet openedagain in the afternoon. Another shop ownerMadame Kadek who’s shop in front of the minimarket also stated her uneasy situation. “I useto sell essentials too but now no longer. Now Ionly sell meals like nasi campur, tipat santokand rujak. Others like soap, shampoo and aquaare no longer an interest. We can only surren-der in this mini market spread as governmentitself was never clear. Government should’velooked over small shops and traditional mar-kets,” she stated.

Other example was a small shop in the eastof Indomaret at Tukad Yeh Aya Street, Renon. The shop owner seemed quiet waiting forbuyers yet hardly there was. “We are veryworried of this situation. I use to can get in-come for my kids to go to university, nowthe situation has changed, empty and we loss

the competition,” stated the owner. She alsoplans to rent the place for something elserather than seeing her shop empty.

It is also found out, the short distanced minimarkets were also a game done by the villageofficials. According to Madame Rita, ownerof a shop nearby Alfa Midi, Tukad Yeh AyaStreet, the building was just being bought sothey can get building permit then with thegame going on it started being a businessplace. “At first we were suspicious it will bea mini market yet village officials will not signthe building permit agreement. Yet it becamea business place in the end,” she explained.

Since the existence of the mini market, hershop’s income have gone really down fromthe essentials and so she completed her shopwith menus like ice drinks and fruit saladrujak. “If the goods are not variety then it’llbe really hard to get income. We only can sur-render, at least we get something to live onwith,” she concluded.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –I Ketut Artaya (40) was devas-

tated as a fire engulfed his woodswarehouse at Pengiasan Street VI,No. 2, Wairasatya, Sidakarya Vil-lage, South Denpasar last Saturday(21/5) at 11.30 pm local time. It isstill unknown what have caused ityet no casualties were found also itis admitted to have caused IDR 500million loss.

house was filled by flammablewoods like jati or for furniture. Asit caught on fire no local residentscould help out as it is at night. Luck-ily three fire brigades came to helpand turned off the source of the fireuntil 2 am in local time. Police hasbeen questioning witnesses andfinding evidences. The case is stillbeing further investigated. (kmb21)

With the growing population andthe many houses in Gianyar Re-gency, caused each year’s wastebecame a serious attention. Appar-ently each year there’s a 10 percentincrease according to the GianyarCleanliness and Grounds Agency(DKP) and with Temesi Waste Area(TPA) data not included.

At this time Gianyar has at least360 cubic meters waste each day inthe cities and sub district markets.Yet in general in TPA Temesi itreaches 450 cubic meters each dayand doubles on religious days.

Even so, only nine trucks (DAMTrucks and three Amrol units) pro-vided with 430 people working forgrounds and cleanliness. It’s ironicthe fact that new vehicles of carsAvanza and Innova provided forRegency government where ninefor House of Representatives, yetDKP this year only got 1 truck ex-tra when actually they worked hardin keeping the Adipura Trophy forGianyar.

Waste Increasing, Facility Limited

Head of Gianyar DKP, Ir. IdaBagus Kesawa, last Wendesday(18/5) did not decline the limitation.Yet in between the limitation theagency keeps on their work by hav-ing overnight shifts in keeping theregency clean. Meanwhile the pro-

gram to separate inorganic and or-ganic waste hasn’t been appliedproperly also due to the limited fa-cility. “Don’t think that first, for thegeneral wastes itself has a limitedfacility, how can we do it sepa-rately?” he concluded. (dar)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Bali tourism is not only able

to attract domestic tourists butalso foreign tourists. As a result,no less provinces of Indonesiatake advantage of this island ofthe gods to boost their tourist vis-its to their regions. Papua andWest Papua, for instance, pro-moted their tourism in Bali todraw more visitors.

Division Head of Promotionand Marketing of Papua Culturaland Tourism Services, NelaYembise, said that tourists visitin the period of 2010 reached fivethousand people. Meanwhile, thetarget of this year was 7 thousandtourist visits.

“We do direct promotion in themalls throughout Indonesia, in-cluding in Bali. It is intended toinvite the perpetrators of tourismbusiness such as travel agencies, hotels and airlines so they couldoffer our package tours,” re-vealed Yembise on Saturday(May 21).

Nela recognized the rate oftourist visit to Papua did not in-crease significantly as con-strained by transportation infra-structure that made difficult toreach the existing tourist sites inthe region. “The travel expendi-ture becomes more expensive dueto such transportation obstacle.Undeniably, it is also an impor-

INTEREST of young generation to get involved the agricultural sector seems to be gettinglower. This phenomenon can be seen from the minimal graduates of senior high school/voca-tional high school who enroll for the student selection and admission to state-run higher educa-tion (SMNPTN) in the study programs existing in the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana Univer-sity. Strategies to provide full scholarships for prospective students wishing to continue theirstudy to Faculty of Agriculture were unable to increase the excitement of young generation togo into the agricultural sector. It is indicated by the fact that faculty categorized to have rareenthusiasts was only occupied by no more than 60 percent of the quota provided. Rector ofUdayana University, Prof. Dr. I Made Bakta, said the matter to Bali Post on Sunday (May 22).

Bakta observed the conferment ofscholarships was quite helpful to in-crease the number of students in theFaculty of Agriculture. However, thepolicy was unable to make all the‘seats’ allocated in the faculty fullconsidering the number of prospec-tive students enrolling in the selec-tion remained below the specified ca-pacity. “For each study program inthe Faculty of Agriculture, we haveallocated 72 chairs for new students. However, we are incapable of fillingthem entirely. At best, it will reach60 percent of the quota provided. Inthis academic year, we expect thedemand to increase,” said Baktawhile adding that a number of other

studies in the Faculty of AgriculturalTechnology, Faculty of Agricultureand the Faculty of Letters also lackedof applicants.

Considering the number of enthu-siasts in the Faculty of Agriculture wasvery low, he said, starting the academicyear 2009/2010 Udayana Universityofficially ‘diminished’ the number ofcourses existing in the faculty. Origi-nally, the Faculty of Agriculture,Udayana University, had six coursesof study namely Department of SoilScience, Agricultural Cultivation,Plant Disease, Social Economics ofAgriculture, Agricultural Extensionand Landscaping Architecture.

Since the six courses had rare en-

thusiasts, Udayana University then is-sued a policy to merge the six coursesinto two courses of study namely theDepartment of Agribusiness originat-ing in the Social Economics of Agri-culture and Agricultural Extension aswell as Department of AgriculturalAgroecotechnology originating in theSoil Science, Agricultural Cultiva-tion, Pests and Plant Diseases andLandscaping Architecture. “Admit-tedly, the interest of senior highschool graduates and the equivalentto continue their study to Faculty ofAgriculture is very low. Perhaps, thisphenomenon indicates that younggeneration is reluctant to farm,” hesaid regretfully.

A legislator of Raja AmpatHouse, Yos Awom, said thatPapua had the third best maritimetourism in the world, namely RajaAmpat located in West Papua.“He came to Bali with a missionto attract foreign tourists and do-mestic tourists to visit this exoticdestination,” he said.

According to him, West Papuatargeted the tourist visit to reach4 thousand in 2011 from 2 thou-sand tourists in 2010. “With theallocation of promotional fundworth IDR 16 billion, we expectthe tourist visit could increasesignificantly,” he said. He furtherexplained that Papua Province of-fered a traditional life style of lo-cal society in Wamena. For in-stance, local people still used pe-nis sheath in their daily life.

Meanwhile, Subdivision HeadV of the Tourism Destination Pro-motion, Ministry of Culture andTourism, Diah Widiati, did hopethat tourism promotion of Papuaand West Papua in the Bali tour-ism gateway would be able to in-crease the number of tourist ar-rivals to Indonesia. In 2010, thenumber of tourist visit reached7.1 million. “Hopefully, the rateof tourist visit could reach 7.6million in 2011,” she said. (par)

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event forApril 27 through May 23, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date forit annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 daysaccording to Balinese calendar, including the smallerancestral shrine which each family possesses. Becauseof this practically every few days a ceremony of festi-val of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebratedthe same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day,Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place onthe same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimespainted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifullyarranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. Infront of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellasdepending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides theseumbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributesof Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”,long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments ofyoung coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits andcolored cakes, to the Temple. Lovina TourismRivaled by villas,

budget hotels slumpBali Post

SINGARAJA - Widespread devel-opment of foreign-owned villas on thenorth coast of Buleleng seems to in-fluence the occupancy rate of budgethotels in the Lovina and other touristresorts in Buleleng.

As consequence, many hotelsoriginally owned by local residents areeventually sold to foreigners becausethe formers are no longer able to man-age.

Frequent changes of ownershiphappening to hotels in Lovina and thesurrounding areas cause the hotel re-naming so often. Every new ownerrenames the hotel in accordance withhis desire.

Even, there is a hotel in the regionwhose name has been changed up tofive times. Apart from the change ofownership, the name change is alsocarried out by other reasons, such asthe old name is considered not profit-able, so needs replacing with a sale-able new name that can provide ben-efits.

A tourism business perpetrator inLovina tourist resort said that Lovinahad slumped since 1997. Such condi-tion was then aggravated by the Balibombings. Continuous decline in tour-ist visits caused the hotels in Lovinato get no guests. As a result, hotel own-ers who were mostly local residentswere forced to sell their hotel proper-ties to investors from outside Bali oroverseas.

Actually, before 2000, hotels inLovina were able to compete againststar hotels. However, the budget ho-tels were now on the verge of extinc-tion because they did not get manyguests as ever before. A budget hotelin the resort only had an average oc-cupancy rate of 10 percent a month.

“The occupied rooms were sold atvery cheap price. Otherwise, budget

hotels will not be able to draw tour-ists,” said one of the hotel owners inLovina.

Information obtained from a num-ber of budget hotel owners mentionedthat rampant construction of beachsidevillas by foreign nationals was one ofthe causes of decline in occupancy rateamong the budget hotels. Tourists pre-ferred to stay in villas spreading outalong the beach in Buleleng.

Moreover, the management of vil-las had a better promotion and mar-keting system via the Internet orthrough direct overseas promotion. So,tourists arriving at the airport wereimmediately picked up by villas anddirectly taken to the accommodationbecause they had booked through theInternet.

“These villas finally vanquish thebudget hotels. Additionally, mostowners of those villas are foreigners,so their marketing is more intensive.Meanwhile, the budget hotels are nowjust waiting for those who are unableto book room in villas and we areforced to sell our rooms at lower priceto attract customers,” said a budgethotel owner in Lovina.

In the meantime, Chairman of theIndonesian Hotels and RestaurantsAssociation (PHRI) of BulelengChapter, Dewa Ketut Suardipa, did notdeny if the occupancy rate of budgethotels in Lovina and the surroundingareas never increased, whereas Lovinawas formerly known to have a lot ofbudget hotels.

Unfortunately, the budget hotelswere vanquished by many villas builtnear the beach and in countryside.Likewise, large number of villas alsohad an impact on the tourist arrivalsto the region of Lovina. “The numberof villas on the coastal regions andrural areas also causes Lovina not busyas ever before,” he said. LONDON – Debt worries ham-mered European markets on Mon-day, knocking both the euro and re-gional shares down 1 percent whilealso weighing heavily on world eq-uities, sending emerging marketsdown nearly 2 percent.

Investors were digesting a blockof bad news about the euro zone cri-sis. Following Fitch Ratings cut ofGreece’s debt ratings by threenotches on Friday, pushing thecountry’s debt deeper into junk sta-tus, rival Standard & Poor’s cut itsoutlook for Italy to “negative” from“stable” on Saturday.

Spanish voters added to the angst, becoming the latest electorate to pun-ish sitting European governments forthe current economic climate.

The ruling Socialists were hit bystinging losses in local elections andnow face a balancing act betweenvoter anger over sky-high unemploy-ment and investor demands for strictausterity measures.

“There’s a risk of everything be-coming excessively politicized whichwill be detrimental for the economy,”said Carlos Berzosa, professor of ap-plied economy at Madrid’sComplutense University.

Investors reacted to the variousevents with a burst of risk aversion, shifting funds into U.S. governmentdebt, gold and the dollar.

The euro fell, for example, to arecord low against the generally safe-haven Swiss franc.

It lost around 1 percent against thedollar and was down 1.2 percentagainst the yen.

Worries about some form of debtrestructuring by Greece was a key el-ement of the selloff.

In Apri l 2010 Iceland’sEyjaf joel l volcano erupted, spewing a massive cloud of ashthat caused the planet’s biggestairspace shutdown since WorldWar II with more than 100,000flights cancelled and eight mil-lion passengers stranded.

The costs in terms of lost rev-enue and compensation to pas-sengers were a body blow to the

Moody’s warns Japan recessionis negative for rating

Reuters

TOKYO – Japan’s return to reces-sion and a bigger-than-expected slumpin first-quarter economic growth arenegative for its credit rating, Moody’sInvestors Service said, warning that adelay in recovery could warrant addi-tional fiscal and monetary stimulus.

The triple blow of the March earth-quake, tsunami and nuclear crisis hasnudged Japan into recession and ledto a surprisingly deep 0.9 percent con-traction in January-March, whichMoody’s said, was negative forJapan’s rating and made it increasinglyurgent for Prime Minister Naoto Kanto compile a second extra budget.

“Reconstruction and relief expen-ditures will eventually lead to a re-bound in economic growth later thisyear and in 2012,” Moody’s said in astatement on Monday.

“But the scale of the loss in outputand income caused by the earthquakemay already have lowered the futuregrowth trajectory of the Japaneseeconomy, thwarting Japan’s long-termgrowth rate, which is currently around1 percent,” it said.

While the shock from power short-ages will be temporary, the risk ofJapanese companies permanently los-ing global market share due to currentsupply chain disruptions is more dam-aging, Moody’s said.

“Should the rebound in Japan’seconomy be weaker than forecast ordelayed entirely, additional actions byboth the Ministry of Finance and Bankof Japan may be needed,” the ratingsagency said in a statement.

Japan is facing its worst crisis sinceWorld War Two after the magnitude9.0 earthquakes and a deadly tsunamibattered its northeast coast on March11, leaving about 25,000 dead or miss-

ing and crippling a nuclear powerplant. The economy shrank in January-March at nearly double the pace fore-cast by markets and is expected to con-tract again in the second quarter assupply chain disruptions and powershortages hit factory output.

The Bank of Japan eased monetarypolicy days after the quake but hasstood pat since then on the view —shared by many economists — whichgrowth will pick up from around au-tumn when supply constraints ease.

But the central bank has expressedits readiness to ease policy further ifthe damage from the quake is biggerthan expected and threatens Japan’sreturn to a moderate recovery.

The government, for its part, passedthrough parliament a 4 trillion yen ($48billion) first emergency budget for im-mediate disaster relief and is now eye-ing a second extra budget for recon-struction, which Moody’s said will“likely need to be much larger than thefirst one.”Kan has signaled that the sec-ond extra budget would be quite big, while Economics Minister KaoruYosano said reconstruction may costup to 15 trillion yen.

But any progress in compiling thesecond extra budget would be slow asKan needs cooperation from opposi-tion parties, which control the upperhouse, to pass necessary legislationthrough parliament.

Another uncertainty overshadow-ing Japan’s fiscal outlook is the extentto which the government will share theburden of Tokyo Electric Power’s(9501.T) rising quake-related liabili-ties, Moody’s said.Japan’s public debt,at double the size of its $5 trillioneconomy, is the biggest among majorindustrialized economies, limiting roomfor additional fiscal stimulus and trig-gering warnings from ratings agencies.

But lawmakers are hesitant aboutraising taxes, particularly the politi-cally sensitive sales tax, for fear ofscaring voters away, even as the costof quake reconstruction adds to theheavy burden of spending for socialwelfare in a rapidly aging society.

Moody’s warned in February thatit might cut Japan’s Aa2 rating — itsthird highest rating — if the govern-ment fell short of crafting comprehen-sive tax reform to fix the country’s tat-tered finances.

Debt woes hammereuro and world stocks

If Greece were to restructure itsdebt that could prompt Ireland andPortugal to follow with debt restruc-turing of their own, Adrian Foster, head of financial markets research forAsia-Pacific for Rabobank Interna-tional in Hong Kong, said in a re-search note.

European shares suffered the samefate as the euro, with the FTSEurofirst300 index selling of 1.3 percent.

“It’s more than Greece now. Thisis more a reflection of the inability ofthe EU to sort out anything, and thatmakes people worry beyond Greece,”said Lothar Mentel, chief investmentofficer at Octopus Investments.

Risk aversion spread beyondEurope. World stocks as measuredby MSCI were down more than 1percent.

It was particularly hit by emerg-ing markets losses. The MSCIemerging market stock index wasdown more than 2 percent, for a yearto date loss of more than 3 percent.

Emerging markets, despite thestrong economic condition that someof them enjoy, are still seen as rela-tively risky investments and there-fore sell off when sentiment turnscautious.

Yields on peripheral euro zonebonds rose.

The spread between the yields on10-year Spanish and Italian bondsand their German counterpartsreached their widest levels sinceJanuary.

Investors, however, bought coreeuro zone debt. The June Bund futurehit its highest level since January.

Rihanna and Taylor Swift were two of the key winners at the Bill-board Music Awards, which returned after a five-year hiatus with amajor dose of star power, featuring Beyonce, U2, the Black EyedPeas — even First Lady Michelle Obama.

Like many other awards shows, the three-hour Billboard Awardsserved more as a promotional vehicle for today’s top pop stars than atrophy presentation. The show was packed with performances — apiano-levitating Cee Lo Green, a scantily clad Rihanna on “S&M”joined by Britney Spears, a much-bleeped Lil Wayne with Mary J.Blige, and Neil Diamond leading the audience in a sing-a-long to“Sweet Caroline” and “America.”

Among Rihanna’s wins were for radio artist of the year and topfemale artist. Swift won the evening’s first award, as top album artist, behind the multimillion sales for “Speak Now.” She also won topcountry artist.

“The impact of an album is all determined by the fans,” she toldthe audience when she picked up her first. “You’ve just given meanother reason to be completely in love with you.” Other award win-ners included Justin Bieber, Lady Antbellum and the Black Eyed Peas.

NEW YORK – The reengineered “Pirates of the Caribbean” se-quel “On Stranger Tides” found its smoothest sailing overseas, whereit took in a record $256.3 million at the international box office, ac-cording to studio estimates Sunday.

Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. “Chi-cago” director Rob Marshall tookthe helm from Gore Verbinski, whodirected the trilogy. Penelope Cruzand Ian McShane introduce newcharacters.

It was a risky reboot consider-ing the popularity of the previous“Pirates” films. The last, 2007’s “AtWorld’s End,” opened with $114.7million.

But “At World’s End” was alsobadly reviewed and disappointingto much of its audience. For Disney,

which has expansive merchandisingand theme park tie-ins to “Pirates ofthe Caribbean,” it’s a crucial franchise. The first three movies earned a com-bined $2.7 billion worldwide.

“The whole play of this particularmovie was based on a worldwide re-lease because of our feeling of howstrong the international marketplacewould be,” said Chuck Viane, head ofdistribution at Disney. “Johnny is notjust a domestic star. Johnny is an in-ternational star.”

Viane said the result vindicated thefranchise’s new look, that audiences“loved the rebooted attitude.” Vianedidn’t comment on whether this meanta subsequent fifth film, but that seemsextremely likely. Producer JerryBruckheimer already has a script inthe works.

“If I had to tell a freshman classwhat it means to become a mam-mal, it means to become a superbsmeller,” Rowe said in a telephoneinterview.

Enlargement of the brain’ssmell-sensing region was followedby upgrades in the brain areas thatdeal with touch sensitivity from

Among mammals, today’s hu-mans have traded away some of thatability to smell for improved visionand hearing, Rowe observed, but westill have close companions calleddogs who heavily exploit the senseof smell.

As the mammal brain evolved, the area involved in sensory re-sponse “underwent particularlyspectacular development,” said R.

SYDNEY – Sea levels are set to rise by up to a metre within a centurydue to global warming, a new Australian report said Monday as it warnedthis could make “once-a-century” coastal flooding much more common.

Meteorology and academics, somejudgments, including on sea levels, were his own. “I expect the magnitudeof global average sea-level rise in 2100compared to 1990 to be in the range of0.5 to 1.0 metre,” Steffen said in hispreface to “The Critical Decade”.

He said while this assessment washigher than that of the Intergovernmen-tal Panel for Climate Change in 2007,which was under 0.8m, it was not in-consistent with the UN body which hadsaid higher values were possible.

“We’re five years down the tracknow, we know more about how those

big ice sheets are behaving,” Steffentold reporters. “In part we have somevery good information about theGreenland icesheet. We know it’slosing mass and we know it’s losingmass at an increasing rate.

“So that’s telling us that we needto extend that upper range a bit to-wards a metre. Now there are com-mentators who say it should be evenhigher than that.”

The report said a sea-level riseof 0.5m would lead to surprisinglylarge impacts, with the risk of ex-treme events such as inundations incoastal areas around Australia’slargest cities of Sydney andMelbourne hugely increased.Steffen said in some instances, aone-in-a-hundred year event couldhappen every year.

It gives him plenty of options tochoose from next weekend — a clearsign that the lines between fringeplayer and starter are not as clear asusual — but the reality is that only the

best will do.Asked if he had finalised his start-

ing XI, Ferguson said: “Not entirelybut we’ve got the nucleus who deservetheir place and there are others whodeserve a place.

“But I can only pick 11 and that’sthe horrible part of being a managernow. At a cup final, it’s absolute agonyand something you don’t relish at allbut I have to do it.”

With Ferguson keen to avoid themistakes that led to defeat by theSpaniards in the 2009 final, when herested many of his first-choice play-ers for an end-of-season league gameagainst Hull City only for them to thenlose 2-0 to Barca, he played a stron-ger-than-expected side for Sunday’slast domestic game at home toBlackpool that ended with a 4-2 vic-tory.

There were of course notable play-ers like Rio Ferdinand, AntonioValencia, Wayne Rooney and RyanGiggs either on the bench or restedaltogether but there were certainlymore possible Wembley starters in-volved than many had predicted. “Ihave to pick a team and leave somevery good players out,” Fergusonsaid. “Hopefully, those who have allplayed a part in the European cam-paign this season will feel satisfac-tion at the end of the night at Wembleyand we’ll win the cup.”

The RB7 has started from poleposition at every grand prix so farthis year, but its sometimes one-sec-ond per lap advantage in single-lapperformance has not been matchedin the races.

At Barcelona, the team was againin a class of its own in qualifyingbut in the grand prix Vettel waspushed all the way by LewisHamilton - at an aerodynamically-demanding track which should haveenabled Red Bull Racing to havemore of an advantage.

When asked if McLaren’s chal-lenge was a concern, becauseBarcelona should have been mucheasier for Red Bull owing to its sup-posed car advantage, team princi-pal Christian Horner said: “It wasn’tconcerning at all because we wonthe grand prix.

“I think that at the end of the day,it would be very arrogant of us tothink we have a car advantage thatwould enable us to pull away at onesecond per lap.

race and they were not competitivetwo weeks ago in Turkey. It tends tosee-saw. “But they brought a hugeupgrade, almost a B-spec car here, and the upgrades that we have intro-duced have moved us forward. So Ithink that we are in a good situation.

“The form will continue to varyand is circuit dependent, where someteams will be stronger in race andsome in qualifying.” Horner believesthat Red Bull Racing’s bigger advan-tage that it has in qualifying comparedto the race is most probably relatedto the way it uses its Pirelli rubber.

“It is all about the tyre,” he said.“I think that we managed to extracta lap out of the tyre in qualifyingthat led to a hugely impressive mar-gin here, but I don’t think you canabuse the tyre like that in the race.

“You either do that and go for afive-stop, or you make the stints suityour strategy and react to the paceof people around you. McLarenwere a lot more competitive as weexpected they would be in the race. But it is funny because two weeksago Ferrari were our main competi-tors, and in Spain we lapped them.So it varies circuit to circuit.”

FERNANDO Alonso said henever believed he had much of achance of fighting for victory in theSpanish Grand Prix - despite lead-ing the early stages of the race.

The Spaniard jumped fromfourth on the grid to move to thefront of the pack at Barcelona, butfell down the order and off the pacewhen he switched to the prime tyresat his third spot.

He eventually finished a lap downin fifth place – but thinks his perfor-mance looked worse than it was sim-ply because of his strong qualifyingform and early position in the race.

“We were not quick enough,” ex-plained Alonso. “That is the main is-sue. Yesterday we should maybequalify eighth and ninth, and ‘unfor-tunately’ I was fourth. Today, if youstart the race eighth, you finish fifth,so it is a great result. “We were out ofposition yesterday, it was a good lap,and we were out of position today be-cause of the good start, so everythinglooks sad. But that is the way it is.

“We had a great start and foundourselves leading the race but not withthe pace to lead the race, so step bystep, lap by lap, you are losing ground.

“And then, at the end with hardtyres, we were not competitive withthem all weekend. And unfortu-

Alonso never thought win was possiblenately, anticipating the stops with thesoft, we found ourselves for 40% ofthe race with the hard tyre, whichwas a less competitive tyre for us,so we were slow with the soft andvery, very slow with the hard.”

Even though Alonso kept hislead for the first stint of the race, hesaid he knew fairly early on that hewas not going to be able to keep hisadvantage for the race.

“It was great, a great experienceto lead the race for the first time thisyear, in front of my people. I enjoyedthe first 20 laps of the race, even if

there was a lot of pressure from be-hind. “You have to use your strategy, your KERS, everything in the rightplace to defend the position and Ienjoyed, I really enjoyed, those laps.

“But I was thinking in thepitstops there is nothing you can do,stop one lap early they will over-take you, if they stay out they willovertake you. The only possibilityis stopping the same lap as theywere doing but, because I had threeor four cars behind me, you cannotdo that with all the cars - so I hadno big hopes for the winning.”
