The spreading mini markets nearby small shops (warung kecil) especially inDenpasar seemed devastating. A number of small shop owners have stated theiruneasy situation. “I use to sell essentials yet now my goods to sell are less. Minimarkets can give cheaper prices and we small shop owners felt kicked out andignored,” one unnamed shop owner at Nusa Kambangan Street, Dauh Puri,stated last Saturday (21/5).

The mini market that has lowered their in-come this time is an Alfa Midi around the area.Apparently this mini market was sealed in themorning by Police Civil Service yet openedagain in the afternoon. Another shop ownerMadame Kadek who’s shop in front of the minimarket also stated her uneasy situation. “I useto sell essentials too but now no longer. Now Ionly sell meals like nasi campur, tipat santokand rujak. Others like soap, shampoo and aquaare no longer an interest. We can only surren-der in this mini market spread as governmentitself was never clear. Government should’velooked over small shops and traditional mar-kets,” she stated.

Other example was a small shop in the eastof Indomaret at Tukad Yeh Aya Street, Renon.The shop owner seemed quiet waiting forbuyers yet hardly there was. “We are veryworried of this situation. I use to can get in-come for my kids to go to university, nowthe situation has changed, empty and we loss

the competition,” stated the owner. She alsoplans to rent the place for something elserather than seeing her shop empty.

Origi-nally, the Faculty of Agriculture,Udayana University, had six coursesof study namely Department of SoilScience, Agricultural Cultivation,Plant Disease, Social Economics ofAgriculture, Agricultural Extensionand Landscaping Architecture.

thusiasts, Udayana University then is-sued a policy to merge the six coursesinto two courses of study namely theDepartment of Agribusiness originat-ing in the Social Economics of Agri-culture and Agricultural Extension aswell as Department of AgriculturalAgroecotechnology originating in theSoil Science, Agricultural Cultiva-tion, Pests and Plant Diseases andLandscaping Architecture. “Admit-tedly, the interest of senior highschool graduates and the equivalentto continue their study to Faculty ofAgriculture is very low. EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date forit annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 daysaccording to Balinese calendar, including the smallerancestral shrine which each family possesses. Becauseof this practically every few days a ceremony of festi-val of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali.There are also times when the entire island celebratedthe same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day,Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place onthe same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days,depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade,sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimespainted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifullyarranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. Infront of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellasdepending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides theseumbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributesof Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”,long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments ofyoung coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire,carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits andcolored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires thegrace with which the carry their load on their heads.

INGREDIENTS:4 sml lobsters, weighing about 500 gr each or 1 kg large

prawns5 cups water2 lemongrass, bruised2 fragrant lime leaves4 cups coconut milkfew drops white vinegarfried shallots to garnish

SPICE PASTE:5 red chilies, seeded and chopped3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped7 shallots, peeled and chopped5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped4 candlenuts1 ½ tsp coriander½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded2 tbsp oil1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp1 salam leaf1 lemon grass, bruised

PREPARATION:Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all

ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass.Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cookover moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool.

Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil,add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters,plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and removemeat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meataside.

Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar tothe water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stockremain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strainstock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots andaccompanied by white rice.

Helpful hints:if using prawns instead of lobster, peel the raw prawns

Spanish voters added to the angst,becoming the latest electorate to pun-ish sitting European governments forthe current economic climate.

The ruling Socialists were hit bystinging losses in local elections andnow face a balancing act betweenvoter anger over sky-high unemploy-ment and investor demands for strictausterity measures.

“There’s a risk of everything be-coming excessively politicized whichwill be detrimental for the economy,”said Carlos Berzosa, professor of ap-plied economy at Madrid’sComplutense University.

Investors reacted to the variousevents with a burst of risk aversion,shifting funds into U.S. governmentdebt, gold and the dollar.

The euro fell, for example, to arecord low against the generally safe-haven Swiss franc.

Moody’s warns Japan recessionis negative for rating

TOKYO – Japan’s return to reces-sion and a bigger-than-expected slumpin first-quarter economic growth arenegative for its credit rating, Moody’sInvestors Service said, warning that adelay in recovery could warrant addi-tional fiscal and monetary stimulus.

The triple blow of the March earth-quake, tsunami and nuclear crisis hasnudged Japan into recession and ledto a surprisingly deep 0.9 percent con-traction in January-March, whichMoody’s said, was negative forJapan’s rating and made it increasinglyurgent for Prime Minister Naoto Kanto compile a second extra budget.

“Reconstruction and relief expen-ditures will eventually lead to a re-bound in economic growth later thisyear and in 2012,” Moody’s said in astatement on Monday.

“But the scale of the loss in outputand income caused by the earthquakemay already have lowered the futuregrowth trajectory of the Japaneseeconomy, thwarting Japan’s long-termgrowth rate, which is currently around1 percent,” it said.

While the shock from power short-ages will be temporary, the risk ofJapanese companies permanently los-ing global market share due to currentsupply chain disruptions is more dam-aging, Moody’s said.

“Should the rebound in Japan’seconomy be weaker than forecast ordelayed entirely, additional actions byboth the Ministry of Finance and Bankof Japan may be needed,” the ratingsagency said in a statement.

Moody’s warned in February thatit might cut Japan’s Aa2 rating — itsthird highest rating — if the govern-ment fell short of crafting comprehen-sive tax reform to fix the country’s tat-tered finances.

SYDNEY – Sea levels are set to rise by up to a metre within a centurydue to global warming, a new Australian report said Monday as it warnedthis could make “once-a-century” coastal flooding much more common.

McLarenwere a lot more competitive as weexpected they would be in the race.But it is funny because two weeksago Ferrari were our main competi-tors, and in Spain we lapped them.So it varies circuit to circuit.”

FERNANDO Alonso said henever believed he had much of achance of fighting for victory in theSpanish Grand Prix - despite lead-ing the early stages of the race.

The Spaniard jumped fromfourth on the grid to move to thefront of the pack at Barcelona, butfell down the order and off the pacewhen he switched to the prime tyresat his third spot.

He eventually finished a lap downin fifth place – but thinks his perfor-mance looked worse than it was sim-ply because of his strong qualifyingform and early position in the race.

“We were not quick enough,” ex-plained Alonso. “That is the main is-sue. Yesterday we should maybequalify eighth and ninth, and ‘unfor-tunately’ I was fourth. Today, if youstart the race eighth, you finish fifth,so it is a great result. “We were out ofposition yesterday, it was a good lap,and we were out of position today be-cause of the good start, so everythinglooks sad. But that is the way it is.

“We had a great start and foundourselves leading the race but not withthe pace to lead the race, so step bystep, lap by lap, you are losing ground.

“And then, at the end with hardtyres, we were not competitive withthem all weekend. And unfortu-

there was a lot of pressure from be-hind. “You have to use your strategy,your KERS, everything in the rightplace to defend the position and Ienjoyed, I really enjoyed, those laps.

“But I was thinking in thepitstops there is nothing you can do,stop one lap early they will over-take you, if they stay out they willovertake you. The only possibilityis stopping the same lap as theywere doing but, because I had threeor four cars behind me, you cannotdo that with all the cars - so I hadno big hopes for the winning.”
