Studio estimates Sunday put Ridley Scott’s sci-fi adventure “Prometheus” at No. 2 again with $20.2 million. “Mada-gascar 3” and “Prometheus” held off two under-achieving newcomers. The star-studded musical “Rock of Ages,” whose cast includes Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin, flopped

at No. 3 with $15.1 million.Sandler’s “That’s My Boy” bombed

with $13 million, the worst showing for one of his broad comedies since the mid-1990s. “That’s My Boy” came in at No. 5, behind the $13.8 million for “Snow White & the Huntsman,” a film that’s been out for three weekends already.

“Sure, we would have liked to have done more,” said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, which released “That’s My Boy” and most of Sandler’s past movies. “But you’ve got to give it to Adam. He mixes it up. This is a really off-the-wall comedy.” “That’s My Boy” stars Sandler as a guy who became a fleeting teen celebrity after getting his seventh-grade teacher pregnant and now is a middle-aged loser trying to reconnect with his son (Andy Samberg).

As with most Sandler movies, the reviews were bad, but that usually does not stop his audience of young males from showing up.

TORONTO — Investigators combed through the wreckage of a Toronto stage Sunday to determine what caused the structure to come crashing down ahead of a Radiohead concert, killing the band’s drum tech-nician and injuring three other crew members. The British band said it was devastated over the death of Scott Johnson, a U.K. citizen in his 30s who was trapped under the rubble and pronounced dead at the scene.

“We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend

and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew,” the band said on its website. “We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott’s family and all those close to him.”

Toronto Police spokesman Tony Vella said a 45-year-old man hos-pitalized with a head injury was improving and his life was not in danger. The other two crew members were treated at the scene.

Officials from the Ontario Min-istry of Labor searched through the

wreckage for clues to the cause of the collapse Saturday in Downsview Park. They were also investigat-ing whether safety regulations and standards were followed and if staff were properly trained.

Ministry spokesman Matt Blajer said the massive structure is “still fair-ly unstable” and work is under way to make it safe. He said the investigation is “fairly complex” and it could take some time to figure out exactly what happened. Blajer said they have three inspectors and two engineers going through the wreckage. They were provided with engineer drawings.

LOS ANGELES — Zoo animals remain hot at the box office. Sing-ing stars and Adam Sandler are not. Ben Stiller and his voice co-stars of “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” held on to the No. 1 spot again, with $35.5 million for the animated sequel’s second weekend in domestic theaters.

Calendar Event for May 20 through June 20, 2012

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Semarapura, DenPostNot only roads, water and electric-

ity, another crucial problem hits the people of Nusa Penida, Klungkung where abrasion seemed to threat further a cemetery at Banjar Parapat which has been hit by it before also to a school field at elementary school SDN 1 Ped as Head of Ped Village, Made Sukarta, revealed last Sunday (17/6). This problem has been reported to the regional and province govern-ment. “Two months ago two workers

from Province came to check yet after that no further action was taken,” Sukarta stated.

This condition has also happened around Pura Dalem Ped (the temple of death located next to the cem-etery) moreover the abrasion length have reached seven kilometers up to Banjar Nyuh. Not only that, the dike built around the beach fractured and destroyed by wave at some point. “If no action is taken soon, abrasion wors-ens,” Sukarta exclaimed. (119)

Observation made at loca-tion on Sunday (Jun 17) indi-cated if the notice board con-taining information to visitors in order they kept the beach en-vironment clean was left dam-aged. Its pole was fragile and collapsed. The board had been left broken and leant against the shade tree on beachside. The information written on the board and colored cartoon image had been outdated, but they were still legible.

Souvenir traders and tourism perpetrators in Lovina said the board had been installed long

time ago. Initially, the board was installed permanently, but due to the age it then collapsed. Nevertheless, related agency did not repair the information board. Then, traders with local tourism perpetrators moved it from its original location. As the pole had been fragile, it was then leaned on a shade tree. “It has been broken for years. Rather than without informa-tion, so for a while the board was leaned against the tree,” said one of the traders.

Aside from information board on the beach, an outdoor

shower had been installed for tourists after bathing in the sea. Unfortunately, the shower had also been broken and now it could not be used. Triggered by indifference of related agency, local residents then pulled the shower. Not only that, the wall having been installed with ceramics had become the target of vandalistic act that struck it off with spray paint. Such act made condition of the public facility less feasible to see. Even, many tourists com-plained as the facility did not work. (kmb)

Singaraja (Bali Post)—Banyupinaruh Day, a day after Saras-

wati Day, is always vibrantly celebrated by people in North Bali. As on Banyupi-naruh Day, Sunday (Jun 17), myriad residents thronged the mountain springs to perform a joint bathing ritual.

Meanwhile, the beaches at coastal villages in Buleleng had been visited by residents wishing to take a bath since ear-ly morning like on Penimbangan Beach and Kerobokan Beach in Singaraja. They came and brought along with canang sari oblation. Before plunging into the sea, they presented the oblation on the sand and in the temple nearby.

If people at coastal territory came to the beach, those living at mountainous region came to springs on river bank.

The most visited destination was the hot spring, such as the one located at Banjar village. Such favorite hot spring was named Sudamala spring and exactly situ-ated at river basin of foothills of Banjar village. Dozens of people flocked to take bath in turn at the springs.

A number of residents said that every celebration of Banyupinaruh Day after Saraswati, the Sudamala spring was visited by many people to take a shower. They usually invoked holy water from Goddess Saraswati. In addition, the water flowing from the Sudamala spring was also believed to have healing qualities. According to them, people coming to the spring were not only from the Banjar village but also from other villages such Temukus and Singaraja. (kmb15)

Negara (Bali Post) –The Banyu Pinaruh (cleansing day

Saraswati day) at Pekutatan Beach last Sunday (17/6) was shocked when a hu-man skeleton was found around 5 am local time by one of the locals who were coming buy to cleanse themselves. They then checked together and it was true, it was in a complete condition including its skull was there predicted to be an adult skeleton.

Witness I Ketut Sudiata stated at that time a number of children were playing on the beach side for the cleansing day which then one of the child, Gede Yogi Permana (17), saw it first. Not sure if this is real, he then told the other children

and parents. Turns out the skeleton was almost dragged by the current which then Sudiata took a rope and pulled it back. Pekutatan Police officers then came to location to check it which then they co-ordinated with Jembrana Police to bring it to Negara Hospital to find its origin. From quick check it is seen that it is owned by a male, seven teeth were gone, the chin, fingers and feet bones were gone. It is suspected that this skeleton was owned by a Jember resident who fell from the Passenger Boat at Bali Strait not long ago yet it is still further investigated as stated by Head of Pekutatan Police, PC I Komang Kardika, as permitted by Head of Jembrana Police. (kmb26)

A number of supporting facilities at Lovina Beach tourist attraction, Buleleng subdis-trict, apparently have not obtained serious attention from related agencies. It was indi-cated by several facilities having been established do not get any maintenance. Even, the related agency seems indifferent and lets the damage happen. One of them is the notice board containing information to visitors in order to maintain the cleanliness of the beach environment is left broken. Even, this condition has lasted for years.

Putting a price on a natural bounty long taken for granted as free may sound impossible, even ridiculous. But after three decades on the fringes of serious policy-making, the idea is gaining trac-tion, from the vividly clear waters of the Maldives to the sober, suited reaches of the World Bank.

As traditional measures of eco-nomic progress like GDP are criti-cized for ignoring downsides in-cluding pollution or diminishment of resources such as fresh water or fossil fuels, there has been an increased urgency to arguments for a more balanced and accurate reck-oning of costs. That is particularly so as fast-developing nations such as India and China jostle with rich nations for access to those resources

and insist on their own right to pol-lute on a path toward growth.

Proponents of so-called “green accounting” — gathered in Rio de Janeiro this week for the Rio Earth Summit — hope that putting dollar values on resources will slam the brakes on unfettered development. A mentality of growth at any cost is already blamed for disasters like the chronic floods that hit deforest-ed Haiti or the raging sand storms that have swept regions of China, worsening desertification.

Environmental economists ar-gue that redefining nature in stark monetary terms would offer better information for making economic and development decisions. That, they say, would make governments and corporations less likely to

jeopardize future stocks of natural assets or environmental systems that mostly unseen make the planet habitable, from forests filtering water to the frogs keeping swarm-ing insects in check.

If the value of an asset like a machine is reduced as it wears out, proponents say, the same ac-counting principle should apply to a dwindling natural resource.

“Environmental arguments come from the heart. But in today’s world based on economics it’s hard for arguments of the heart to win,” said Pavan Sukhdev, a former banker now leading an ongoing project that was proposed by the Group of Eight industrialized na-tions to study monetary values for the environment.

A new species of crustacean has been discovered in the under-water mountains off the northwest coast of Spain, scientists recently announced. The squat lobster is orange and a little over 2 inches (5 centimeters) long. Squat lob-sters are more closely related to porcelain and hermit crabs than true lobsters.

It was discovered at a depth of 4,626 feet (1,410 meters) in August 2011 by the INDEMARES research group and lives among deep corals and sea fans, according to a study published in the March issue of the journal Zootaxa. The shy crustaceans are abundant in submarine mountains in areas that haven’t been heavily fished; the corals and sea fans amid which they live tend to disappear in trawling zones, researchers said in a statement.

Given the scientific name Uroptychus cartesi, the species’ closest relative can be found in the Caribbean Sea, and both spe-

cies likely have a shared ancestor “who invaded the Atlantic from the Pacific and Indian Ocean a few million years ago,” said study co-author Enrique Macpherson, a researcher at Spain’s Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes.

The squat lobsters are home-bodies and do not spread far, since their larvae spend only a few days in the free-swimming planktonic stage. They feed on smaller crus-taceans and particulate matter. The crustcean is different from other European species mainly because of its shape and the number of thorns on its shell.

Researchers named it after the scientist Joan Cartes, from Barcelona’s Institute of Marine Sciences, who was the first to notice that something about these creatures looked different.

The six specimens captured were handed over to Barcelona’s Institute of Marine Sciences and the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.

LONDON - Scientists have used genome sequencing technology to control an outbreak of the superbug MRSA in a study that could point to faster and more efficient treatment of a range of diseases. The work adds to a burgeoning body of research into better techniques for diagnosing disease more quickly and at an earlier stage to allow more effective treatment and reduce healthcare costs.

Much of this is being driven by whole genome sequencing, which has enabled scientists to identify the genetic markers for a range of afflictions.

MRSA, or Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, is a drug-resistant bacterial infection, or superbug, and major public health problem. When outbreaks occur in hospitals it can lead to the closure of whole wards and lengthy investigations.

The bug kills an estimated 19,000 people in the United States alone each year, and even when the infection is successfully treated it can double the average length of a hospital stay and thereby increase healthcare costs.

A team of scientists from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, the Uni-versity of Cambridge and genome sequencing company Illumina Inc, used samples from a 2009 MRSA outbreak in a hospital neo-natal intensive care ward to recreate and respond to it, as if in real time.

They found that genome sequencing produced results in roughly 24 hours, using the latest technology from Illumina, gave much more detailed information.

Artists performed Calonarang performance. Calonarang performance, a traditional Balinese performance, astonished spectators on Bali Art Festival (BAF).

The three hours performance didn’t made spectators boring, they rarely watched this ancient performance because not every day people in Bali have chance to watch Calonarang.

According to Head of Troupe, I Nyoman Gede Sugiartha, Calonar-ang take 50 artists to perform. They train intensively around three

months to perform this ancient ritual performance.

Sugiartha admitted that he trained the artists by himself and intensive-ly. This performance already passed from generation to generation in his village. “The artists that performed in 34th BAF are from 14th genera-tion. They will renew artists once in five years,” explained Sugiartha.

After a week of Cold War-style recriminations between U.S. and Russian diplomats, the talks at a Group of 20 summit in Mexico will test whether the two leaders can forge a working relationship and find common ground on Syria and other festering disputes.

Suspension of the U.N. monitor-ing mission in Syria over the weekend has put added pressure on Obama and Putin, meeting for the first time since the Russian president’s re-election, to act decisively to keep the conflict from spiraling into civil war.

But with relations frayed and expectations low on both sides for

progress on breaking the deadlock, the stage is set for an uncomfort-able meeting in the Pacific resort of Los Cabos. Diplomatic efforts will be further complicated by Obama’s re-election battle against Republican Mitt Romney - who has called Rus-sia “our number one geopolitical foe” - as well as questions on how far Putin might go in translating his anti-Western rhetoric into actual policy.

The hardened tone appears to mark the endpoint of Obama’s “re-set” of ties with Moscow, pursued with Putin predecessor Dmitry Medvedev and touted by the White House as a signature foreign policy

accomplishment.With Syrian President Bashar

al-Assad continuing his bloody, 15-month crackdown on the op-position, Obama and Western allies want veto-wielding Moscow to stop shielding him from further U.N. Security Council sanctions aimed at forcing him from power.

But Putin, a former KGB spy-master, is suspicious of U.S. mo-tives especially after the NATO-assisted ouster of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi last year, and has offered little sign of softening his stance on Syria.

Though Washington has shown no appetite for a new Libya-style intervention, Russia is reluctant to abandon its Syrian ally, a longtime arms customer, and risk losing its last firm foothold in the Middle East, including access to a warm-water navy base.

RIYADH - Saudi Arabia’s el-derly king led funeral prayers on Sunday for his heir, Crown Prince Nayef, whose death forces him to find a new successor capable of tackling domestic unemployment, bitter rivalry with Iran and turmoil in close Arab neighbors.

Mecca’s Great Mosque, Islam’s holiest place, was lined with mem-bers of the al-Saud ruling family and leaders of Arab states as an imam led

the sunset prayer next to the body of Nayef, who died on Saturday.

Among the mourners was the man most likely to be named as suc-cessor: Prince Salman, 76, who is seen as more likely to continue the 89-year-old King Abdullah’s cau-tious economic and social reforms than the conservative Nayef.

The world’s top oil exporter is locked in regional rivalry with Shi’ite Iran, which it suspects of fomenting unrest among its Shi’ite Muslim mi-nority and in allied Gulf Arab states.

Former Lebanese prime minister Saad al-Hariri was among those who met Nayef’s body at Jeddah airport, representing the Sunni Muslim political alliance that Saudi Arabia cultivates against Iran.

Saudi Arabia is also struggling with entrenched youth unemploy-ment and wary of the threat posed by al Qaeda in the Arabian Penin-sula, based in neighboring Yemen, which has plotted attacks against the kingdom and sworn to topple the ruling al-Saud family.

BEIJING - The Communist Par-ty chief of the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing acknowledged on Monday that a scandal that toppled his predecessor had done serious harm to the ruling party’s image, just months before a key congress and change of leadership.

Zhang Dejiang, who replaced Bo Xilai in March following the scandal which also entangled his wife and a former police chief, said too much attention had been given to the uproar.

The telegenic Bo had been a contender for a top leadership post, but his prospects suffered a blow after Vice Mayor Wang Lijun, previ-ously his longtime police chief, went to ground in the U.S. consulate in nearby Chengdu until he was coaxed out and placed under investigation.

Bo’s wife, Gu Kailai, has been accused of murdering British busi-nessman Neil Heywood. Neither she nor Bo has appeared in public since March, and they have not had a chance to publicly answer the allegations about Heywood, a

long-time family friend.Zhang, speaking at the city’s

Communist Party congress, one of numerous such meetings to proceed the crucial national-level congress later in the year, praised Chongqing’s development, but said it was being overshadowed by the clouds swirling around Bo.

“Chongqing’s development and work of the city’s party committee have some problems and deficien-cies,” Zhang said, according to a transcript of his speech carried on a Chongqing government news website (www.cqnews.net).

“Especially the Wang Lijun in-cident, death of Neil Heywood and serious discipline problems of com-rade Bo Xilai, which have gravely damaged the party and nation’s image, and seriously affected Chongqing’s re-forms and development,” he added.

“Everyone believes that ... we must strictly separate Chongqing’s achievements over the last five years and hard work of the major-ity of officials and people from the Wang Lijun incident, death of Neil Heywood and serious discipline problems of comrade Bo Xilai.”

In the past year, Yehembang traditional market at Dusun Pasar, Yehembang Village, hasn’t got any water supply causing a number of buyers and sellers activities disturbed such as toilets can’t be used properly and causing a filthy condition seen of the market. There are around 100 sellers using it ev-ery day yet due to it can’t be used, they have to go to the river as their toilet as the water well couldn’t be used either as stated by one of the seller, Ketut Wirti (65). Until now, market management still not sup-plying a water pump, replacing nor fixing it, no water can be brought to be place.

Such as Wirti, luckily her house was near so when she needs the

toilet can go home. She really hoped that the water well that has an unfixed water pump will be fixed soon so it won’t cause disturbance for those working and coming by the market. Sellers also hoped the IDR 1000 per day retribution is not nonsense and will be used for some-thing. Now the toilets were forced locked by the management.

Head of the Market, Ngurah Arnata, confirmed the situation yet he just knew it after being the head for a month in this market and so the problem has happened for a month. Apparently this happened due to there are no supervisors tak-ing care of the toilets. For that to fix it he handed it to the market’s community as the management does not have any budget to fix it. Averagely, the paddy plants are 28 days old. Since there is no water supply, farmers are forced to let them dry. Even, they are reluctant to provide fertilizer for fear of losing money. “The water is not avail-able at all, so that we neglect the rice,” said Wayan Sedana, 60, one of the local farmers, Sunday (Jun 17). The man said that such water crisis had lasted almost for a month. Previously, he was desperate to grow rice because he expected to still get rain.

In reality, when the rice began to grow, it no longer rained, while the water supply was totally broken off. As a matter of fact, said Sedana, there was a water flow from Telaga Tunjung Dam. How-ever, since the water discharge was small, farmers were prohibited from using the water by pump engine. With this condition, Sedana could only submit to his fate whereas the costs incurred to grow rice was rather expensive, about IDR 1.5 mil-lion. It excluded the purchase of fertilizer. “I still keep the fertilizer. It will be useless if fertilized without the availability of water,” he complained. He had a farmland area of 1.18 hectares and they were entirely planted with rice.

Why do you not plant it with crops? According to Sedana, farmers were reluctant to plant crops

because the water supply was also inadequate. He pointed out some soybean fields that had gone dry due to water crisis. He hoped the govern-ment could construct a new dam, so that farmers could cultivate their farmland all year round with abundant water. “If this continues, farmers can go bankrupt,” he complained again. Sudana said the area of Subak Aseman III spread across 200 hectares and most of the area faced drought.

Similar complaint was revealed by Juliadi, 45, another farmer. This man decided to let his farm-land dry because there was no water supply. “If wishing to grow, it will be useless without water,” he said. Last season, this man grew rice and the result was not bad. However, when he would like to grow rice in the following season, the water supply continued to shrink and it no longer rained. Since he did not want to lose out, the farmland area of 0.40 hectare was left uncultivated. To make a living, Juliadi should shift his livelihood to be a construction worker. In addition to drought, farm-ers also complained about the rising tax rate of wetland. Such a hike made farmers increasingly strangulated amidst the uncertain production of crops. (kmb30)

SYDNEY - Australian media giant Fairfax said Monday it will slash 1,900 jobs and erect paywalls on its flagship titles in a major overhaul towards a digital future as print advertising revenues plunge.

As part of the plan, the Sydney Morn-ing Herald and The Age in Melbourne will shift from broadsheet format to a more compact, tabloid size and two printing facilities will be shut.

Chief executive Greg Hywood called it a landmark event for the Herald, which began publishing in 1831, and The Age,

founded in 1854.“No one should be in any doubt that we

are operating in very challenging times,” he said in explaining why 20 percent of the company’s 10,000-strong workforce would be axed.

“Readers’ behaviours have changed and will not change back. As a result, we are taking decisive actions to fundamen-tally change the way we do business.”

Fairfax, which has newspaper, radio and digital interests, is the main rival in Australia to News Limited, Rupert Murdoch’s Australian empire, which is also suffering and reportedly preparing

for large job cuts. Like media companies worldwide, Fairfax has faced sliding print advertising and circulation revenues and reported a 44 percent plunge in first-half net profit to December 31.

Stock in the company has fallen more than 85 percent in the past five years and management has come under pressure from the world’s richest woman Gina Rinehart to do something about it.

Mining magnate Rinehart is Fairfax’s major shareholder and on Monday re-vealed she had boosted her stake to 18.67 percent from 12.58 percent following a buying spree last week.

The company’s shares rallied more than seven percent to 65 Australian cents, helped by a separate announcement that Fairfax sold a 15 percent holding in its Trade Me subsidiary, raising Aus$166 million (US$167 million).

Fairfax said it will introduce subscrip-tions for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age websites in early 2013, similar to News Limited, which already charges for access to its main title, The Australian.

Print versions of those two mastheads will shrink to the size of its Australian Financial Review newspaper from March 4, 2013. The job cuts will come over three years and together with the closure of print-ing facilities in Sydney and Melbourne will result in annual savings of Aus$235 million from June 2014, the company said.

One-off costs associated with the changes will be around Aus$248 million. Last month, staff called a snap 36-hour strike after company moves to shift editorial production of several regional newspapers to New Zealand, with the loss of 66 jobs.

Addressing business leaders on the eve of the G20 summit in Mexico, World Bank head Robert Zoellick cited last week’s “wasted” 100 billion euro ($125 billion) bailout of Spanish banks as an example of Europe’s institutional shortcomings. And the head of the Organisation for Economic Coop-eration and Development, Angel Gurria, urged Europe to “take down

the scaffolding” still clinging to its systems of governance and to de-ploy “awesome firepower” to cow the markets.

“Markets can manage risks that they’re well aware of. The danger we’re creating is that the pattern of policy-making is increasing uncertainty and making markets more nervous, which has a negative feedback,” he said.

“To take your Spanish example -- it’s actually 100 billion euros, and to have that as being a nega-tive story? It’s amazing. Why was it? It is because the delivery was extremely poor,” Zoellick said.

Eurozone powers agreed last week to provide a bailout loan of up to 100 billion euros to salvage Spain’s stricken banks, but the deal failed to quell the intensifying storm on the debt market.

The head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, told the same panel that, while Ma-drid is not under IMF supervision, the institution is monitoring the

situation and would be “honest and candid” in its advice.

All 17 members of the eurozone used to enjoy generously low inter-est rates on government debt, as traders assumed their governments shared responsibility for maintain-ing fiscal stability within the cur-rency bloc.

But since the onset of the sover-eign debt crisis in 2009, the weaker states on the periphery of Europe such as Ireland, Portugal and most critically Greece saw soaring bond yields compared to powerhouses like Germany.

Germany has resisted calls to mu-

tualize European debt through issuing joint eurobonds, but the eurozone partners have set up a series of struc-tures to head off the crisis by provid-ing a “firewall” of bailout funds.

Gurria, however, argued that the key to halting the crisis was to deploy the resources of the European Central Bank, a move that has been fiercely opposed by Germany and would breach current European rules.

LONDON - Britain’s biggest retailer Tesco an-nounced on Monday that it had finally struck a deal to exit its Japanese business.

Tesco said in a statement that it would exit Japan in two stages -- first by selling 50 percent of its shares in Tesco Japan to Aeon -- the Asian country’s biggest retail group -- for a nominal amount.

Once in the joint venture with Aeon, Tesco said it would then invest about £40 million (49 million euros, $63 million) into the Japanese business to finance further restructuring.

Thereafter, Tesco said that it would have no further financial exposure to the Japanese business. Comple-tion of the transaction was meanwhile subject to normal regulatory approval.

Tesco had officially announced 10 months ago that it was pulling out of Japan and putting its more than 100 small supermarkets there on sale to focus on other operations in Asia.

“I thank our colleagues in Japan, who have done an excellent job for the business -- in particular over recent months,” Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke said in Monday’s statement.

“We are very pleased to announce this deal with Aeon today, and are confident that this will deliver the best outcome for our staff, for our customers in Japan and for our shareholders,” he added.

Tesco entered Japan in 2003, while the business currently comprises 117 small stores -- primarily under the Tsurakame, Tesco and Tesco Express fascias in the Greater Tokyo area.

King’s fiancé called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to report that she found him at the bottom of the swimming pool at their home in Rialto, Calif., police Lt. Dean Hardin said.

Officers arrived to find King in the water and unresponsive, with no signs of foul play. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m, Hardin said.

The San Bernardino County coroner will perform an autopsy within 48 hours.

The 1992 riots, which were set off by the acquittals of the officers who beat King, lasted three days and left 55 people dead, more than 2,000 injured and swaths of Los Angeles on fire. At the height of the violence, King pleaded on television: “Can we all get along?”

King was stopped for speeding on a darkened street on March 3, 1991. Four Los Angeles police officers hit him more than 50

times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns.

A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.

It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the of-ficers, whose trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Violence erupted immediately, starting in South Los Angeles.

Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city’s Ko-reatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in run-

ning gun battles with looters.During the riots, a white truck

driver named Reginald Denny was pulled by several black men from his cab and beaten almost to death. He required surgery to repair his shattered skull, reset his jaw and put one eye back into its socket.

The police chief, Daryl Gates, came under intense criticism from city officials who said of-ficers were slow to respond to the riots. He was forced to retire. Gates died of cancer in 2010.

In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as “Celebrity Rehab.”

In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man. “America’s been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all,” he says.

MOSCOW — Iran and six world powers have launched a new attempt to break deadlocked negotiations meant to reduce international tensions over Tehran’s nuclear activities. The two sides began their latest meeting in Moscow Monday after the failure of two recent talks to bridge their differences.

The six want Iran to curb nuclear enrichment, which can be used to make both reactor fuel and arm nuclear warheads. Iran says it has a right to enrich and denies Western accusations that it is doing so to be able to make such weapons.

Previous talks stalled as each side waited for the other to make the first move. Iran wants sanctions lifted or postponed, but the six powers rule that out until Iran complies with their demands.

MUARO SIJUNJUNG, Indonesia - A man arrested after writing “God doesn’t exist” on his Facebook page was jailed for 30 months Thursday for sharing explicit material about the Prophet Mohammed online.

Alexander Aan, 30, was found guilty of “deliberately spreading informa-tion inciting religious hatred and animosity”, presiding judge Eka Prasetya Budi Dharma told the Muaro Sijunjung district court in western Sumatra.

Aa n started an atheist group on Facebook on which he shared comic strips of the prophet having sex with his servant, Dharma said.

He also uploaded three articles on his account, including one describing the prophet being attracted to his daughter-in-law.

“Under the Electronic Information and Transactions law, we sentence him to prison for a length of two years and six months,” Dharma said.

“What he did has caused anxiety to the community and tarnished Is-lam.”

Aan was beaten by an angry mob and arrested by police in his hometown of Pulau Punjung in western Sumatra in January after posting the material online and declaring himself an atheist.

The court had earlier indicted Aan with two other charges -- persuading others to embrace atheism and blasphemy -- and prosecutors had sought a three-and-a-half-year jail term for him.

But the court convicted him of the most serious charge and dropped the other two.

Aan’s arrest sparked outrage among Indonesians and international activ-ists, who showed their support on his Facebook group and circulated petitions to have his charges dropped.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, guarantees free-dom of religion in its constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, but only recognises six faiths: Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholicism, Protestantism and Confucianism.

Its courts have in recent years given light sentences to perpetrators of violent attacks on Christians and Islamic minority Ahmadis, some of which have been fatal. The clash, which also left one

person critically injured, broke out in the morning between around 500 men wearing match-ing striped shorts and tribal jew-ellery, said an AFP correspondent who saw four police struck by arrows.

Four vehicles, including an armoured police truck, were torched in the violence.

“Two people have died and one

is in critical condition,” Mimika district police operations head Syamsul Ridwan told AFP. “They were hit with arrows, but we need to await autopsy results to be sure of the cause of death.”

The dead were from Kampung Harapan, he said, whose inhab-itants regularly clash with the people of Kampung Amole.

They had last fought on June 6 after the death of a tribe member

in a road accident and Monday’s violence was probably related to that incident, Ridwan said.

Police had been unable to control the situation, he said, “overwhelmed” by the number of armed men.

Several large tribes live side by side in Mimika district, and killings are usually settled tradi-tionally with compensation and communal feasts.

Pres ident Susi lo Bambang Yudhoyono said he would con-tinue maintaining his subsidy policy so long as it is needed for the people in need of it.

He said on board the plane that took him to the G-20 sum-mit in Mexico on Sunday that subsidy and investment cli-mate in Indonesia had always become the focus of attention of G-20 member countries. “Frankly speaking, Indonesia

has often been pressured with regard to its subsidy policy,” he said.

President Yudhoyono said he would maintain the policy so long as it is needed for the people. “I am responsible and I would tell our friends in G-20 that the subsidy helps the very poor and we must give it,” he said.

President Yudhoyono said remarkable economic growth made by a country would be useless if there are still poor

people living there.“Certainly subsidy which

does not meet targets must be reduced. as it also cuts our budget to build infrastructure, education and health and other sectors,” he said.

Regarding investment cli-mate President Yudhoyono said “indeed, frankly speaking, we still have yet to improve it.” He added one of the govern-ment’s focus in connection with investment is infrastruc-ture development.

While the Netherlands, among the pre-tournament favourites, will search for solutions to their massive under-achievement, Portugal have little time for reflection. The Portuguese will prepare for the knockout phase, having recovered so well from their opening defeat by Germany.

“The win was entirely deserved as was the qualification. The play-ers had quality, hard work, belief and confidence,” said Portugal coach Paulo Bento. “They showed this over the whole course. We proved that you can lose the first game and still qualify,” he added.

Finishing second in the toughest group is testament to the impres-sive progress of Bento’s team who significantly have been unchanged throughout the tournament. The Dutch, in contrast, made three changes as Van Marwijk again searched in vain for the right formula.

His side had to deliver a two-goal victory to have a chance of squeez-ing into the last eight and Bundesliga top scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar got his first start of the tournament. Van Marwijk’s plans looked to have been justified by a confident opening 10 minutes, with smart possession play laying the foundations for Van der Vaart’s glorious opener.

Arjen Robben cut in from the right and slipped the ball to the mid-fielder who superbly curled a left-foot shot inside the post beyond the reach of Rui Patricio for an 11th minute lead. Yet the goal marked the high tide mark for the men in orange.

Soon after, Ronaldo gave an early reminder of his threat on the counter, powering through before hitting the outside of the post with a low effort - a sign of things to come. The Netherlands were surprisingly loose with possession and it was from a poor give-away by left-back Jetro Willems that Portugal equalised in the 28th minute.

Joao Pereira threaded a ball to Ronaldo who finished in characteristic style to send the teams in level at the break. The Dutch tried to get back in front after the interval but it was Portugal who got the reward for their positive approach.

Ronaldo created chances for Fabio Coentrao and Nani but in the 74th minute he decided the outcome in impressive fashion. Deep in his own half, the winger swung the ball out wide to Nani on the right who raced goalwards before looking up and finding Ronaldo in the area where he steadied himself before firing past Maarten Stekelenburg.

Luck was also against the Dutch when Van der Vaart hit the post with from 25 metres but the sight of Robin Van Persie and Huntelaar shooting wide in the final minutes was more symbolic.

Ronaldo was determined to complete his riposte to hasty critics with a hat-trick and nearly got his wish when in the final minute when he sprinted down the right, screaming for the ball, collected and struck the post with a left-foot shot.

Moreover, he said, the status of farmer’s life in Bali would also turn sluggish and they would definitely look for other livelihoods.

The high farmland conversion was also caused by behavior of land-owners that was more oriented to tourism sector by reason that it was more prospective sector. Meanwhile, the tourism industry was considered to less contribute to the agricultural sector, although so far the government had routinely provided financial assistance to subak organization. Without doubt, every hobbyist of surfing surely knows the existence Pabean Beach located at Pabean Hamlet, Ketewel, Gianyar. It is ap-proximately 45 minutes’ drive from the Ngurah Rai Airport. The huge waves of the beach are very good to perform marine activities. In dry season (June-October), the wind blowing from the land will come, so that it will enable visitors to perform such activities until late afternoon.

Many surfers from around the world choose this black sandy beach

to pit their guts by conquering the waves. It is appropriate for begin-ners or those who have a wealth of experience. Aside from being quiet, the beach also offers a very beauti-ful panorama. On that account, it’s natural if many villas and other accommodation are established around the Pabean Beach.

Formerly, livelihood of most residents here was catching fish. Their catches were then sold to the market. Aside from catching fish, local people also had a habit of looking for seaweed and they called it paper seaweed. It grew

well on the surface of sea rocks. When the tide was low, then the sea rock overgrown by seaweeds would appear. At that time, many local residents would throng the beach to pick them.

Like the other beaches, the Pa-bean Beach is also a center of ritual activities of Hindu community Bali. Every celebration of Nyepi or Day of Silence, the community of Gianyar, chiefly Ubud and other areas, used to carry out their ritual procession on the beach. As conse-quence, it can beautify the coastal panorama.

Miami also won Game 3 of the finals last year, but that was its last victory as the Dallas Mavericks stormed to the title. It was a pain-ful failure for James, who looks determined to prevent a similar collapse.

“He had a game where he strug-gled and he kind of let that get into his mind a little bit and he was thinking too much. Now he’s play-ing, he’s on attack and being very aggressive,” Dwyane Wade said. “He’s playing very aggressive and that’s the difference obviously from last year to this year, and the differ-ence in our team.”

Wade had 25 points, seven re-bounds and seven assists for the Heat, who “carry that pain with us” from last year, according to

forward Chris Bosh. “We think about it every day and that really helps us to succeed in this series,” Bosh said.

James’ poor performance was part of the problem then, but he seems on top of his game this time. His 3-pointer sent the Heat to the fourth quarter with the lead, and he scored five straight Miami points when the Heat were building just enough cushion to hold off another late flurry by the Thunder.

“Just trying to make plays,” James said. “I told you guys, last year I didn’t make enough game-changing plays, and that’s what I kind of pride myself on. I didn’t do that last year in the finals. I’m just trying to make game-changing plays, and whatever it takes for our

team to win, just trying to step up in key moments and be there for my teammates.”

Game 4 is Tuesday night.Kevin Durant had 25 points for

the Thunder, but picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter and had to go to the bench when they seemed to have control of the game.

“It was frustrating,” Durant said. “Of course we had a good lead and they came back and made some shots. We fouled shooters on the 3-point line twice. It’s a tough break for us, man. You know, I hate sitting on the bench, especially with fouls.” The Heat survived their own fourth-quarter sloppiness — nine turnovers — by getting enough big plays from their Big Three.

MotoGP championship leader Jorge Lorenzo took a comfortable win at Silverstone’s British Grand Prix.

The Yamaha rider spent the first part of the race patiently sitting behind his team-mate Ben Spies and Honda’s Casey Stoner. With six laps gone he moved into second place, before stalking Stoner for another five laps.

At half-race distance he made his move, barging past Stoner through the last corner, withstanding a brief period of resistance from the Honda and then sprinting off to an easy win.

Behind him, it was a battle between the Hondas of Stoner and Dani Pedrosa. Having lost the lead to Lorenzo, Stoner seemed to suddenly struggle for tyre grip. However, he was able to narrowly hold on to second place, with Pedrosa settling for third after an unsuccessful lunge on the final lap.

Polesitter Alvaro Bautista did a solid job on the Gresini Honda, running with the leaders throughout the race and eventually taking a fine fourth place.

Spies was fifth, having quickly gone backwards after losing the lead in the opening laps of the race.

Cal Crutchlow (Tech 3) was the star of the race, charging from the back of the grid to sixth place despite having an injured foot from Friday’s crash. The Brit made a stunning run through the field, stealing sixth from Nicky Hayden (Ducati) on the very last lap.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Valentino Rossi (Ducati) and Hector Barbera (Pramac Ducati) rounded out the top 10, while Andrea Dovizioso finished 19th after making a lengthy stop for a brake problem. Aleix Espargaro was the best of the CRT machines, finishing 11th on the Aspar Aprilia.

Tommy Haas showed he was still capable of springing a surprise at the age of 34 by ending a three-year title drought and beating second seed Roger Federer 7-6 6-4 in the Halle Open final on Sunday.

The German, who needed a wildcard to play in the event as he is now ranked 87th, had declared himself ‘mystified’ with his unexpected passage to the final.

He was even more amazed on Sunday after beating a 30-year-old opponent who was the overwhelm-ing favourite to win a sixth title at the Wimbledon warm-up event.

Haas’s win also snapped a 10-year losing streak against Federer, with the Swiss having won their last nine meetings dating back to the 2002 Paris Masters.

Haas last captured a title at the same grasscourt venue in 2009. Just weeks later he enjoyed his most successful run at Wimbledon when he reached the semi-finals and will be hoping Sunday’s result will also be a launchpad for another run deep into the tournament.

Federer has already enjoyed a memorable week at the German town in North Rhine-Westphalia after the main pathway up to the tennis stadium was named after him.

The 16-times grand slam champion is unlikely to be too concerned about failing to clear the final hurdle here as he would have fine-tuned his game for Wimbledon during the four matches he has played here.

Rooney is available again af ter serv-ing a two-match ban for his red card against Montene-gro in a Euro quali-fier last year, but Ukraine are sweat-ing on the fitness of Shevchenko, who scored both goals in the 2-1 victory over Sweden i n t he i r opening game.

Shevchenko, 35, missed training on

Sunday after suffering two painful blows to his knee in Friday’s 2-0 defeat by France. Ukraine spokesman Oleksander Hlyvinsky said team doctors were drain-ing fluid from Shevchenko’s knee. In four previous appearances at the stadium, Ukraine have failed to triumph and coach Oleg Blokhin has spoken of his team’s need to break a perceived curse at the modern $400 million arena.

England manager Roy Hodgson must choose who makes way for Rooney, with Andy Carroll and Danny Welbeck netting superb goals in the 3-2 win over Sweden, but winger Theo Walcott could miss out with a hamstring injury after an inspired display as a substitute against the Swedes.

Rooney said on Sunday that he was delighted to be available again and was sure England had no cautious thoughts going into their final group game. “The lads have done so well to put us in the position we are in now and hopefully I’ll get a chance to play and try and shine and help us get through the group,” he told a news conference.

“It’s great that we’ve scored a few goals and we’ve got the points that we’ve got. I’m not going to win the Euros on my own -- there are 23 players who are going to chip in and help us win the tournament, or go as far as we can.”

Rooney said he was fully-fit and ready to play, a prospect that may enhance England’s prospects and improve the fluency of their attacking play, but will do little to encourage Ukraine. “Since I’ve joined up with the squad, I’ve took part in every training session,” he said. “I’m feeling good, I’m just feeling ready and excited to get out onto the pitch...”

GDANSK - Euro 2012 favou-rites Germany may in the end have had a nervous time reach-ing the quarter-finals but they are hoping to hit the goal trail against outsiders Greece, said German football chief Wolfgang Niersbach. The Germans got a third straight win when they beat Denmark 2-1 on Sunday to top Group B in their first ever per-fect Euro group stage campaign but it was less convincing than it sounds.

“Three wins, three times nar-rowly won, three times we trem-bled,” said Niersbach. “Obvi-ously, it is a top performance by the team. For the first time we got the full nine points in a group stage. I hope we have saved our goals for the quarter-final.”

The Germans kept their cool after Denmark equalised as, with Portugal beating Netherlands 2-1 at the same time, another Danish goal would have sent them out of the tournament. KRAKOW, Poland - Key England striker Wayne Rooney is set to feature at Euro 2012 for the first time on Tuesday but co-hosts Ukraine could be without their talisman Andriy Shevchenko as they battle to stay in the tournament. England, with four points from two games, need only a draw to progress to the quarter-finals from their final Group D match while Ukraine must win at the Don-bass Arena to avoid the same fate as co-hosts Poland and be eliminated after the first round.

England’s approach, he said, would be un-changed. “It’s the same as the first two games -- we’ll go into the game wanting to win and wanting the three points. If we have to take a point then we’ll happily do that, but we’re going into the game trying to win.”

The natural decision for Hodgson would be to play Rooney with Manchester United team mate Welbeck. The two scored 30 goals between them on the 18 occasions they played for United last season. Hodgson, however, was keen to lift the expectations on his 21-year-old striker.

“I would do well to encourage you not to put too much pressure on the lad,” he said. “Before we build him up to the skies to knock him down, we should remember he has a lot of time ahead of him.

The balance, however, is difficult to find. France train at the excellent facilities used by Shakhtar Donetsk and it has been proving beneficial. “It is the ideal structure. We never experienced this before. Everything is available on site and it helps us gain a lot of time,” said Francois Darras, one of three France phys-iotherapists.

If France finish top of the group they would need to travel to Kiev from Donetsk early on the day before the quarter-final, losing pre-cious recuperation time.

France, who snatched their first win in a major championship since 2006 when they beat co-hosts Ukraine 2-0 in their last match, would head the standings if they beat Sweden and England defeated Ukraine without making up an in-ferior goal difference.

They have four points like Eng-land, with Ukraine in third place on

three and Sweden on none. A draw in both games would put France and England through with Les Bleus top on goal difference. With the scenar-ios favouring France, Blanc could be tempted to rest players or spare those who have been booked.

Centre back Philippe Mexes, right back Mathieu Debuchy and winger Jeremy Menez will miss out on a potential quarter-final appear-ance if they pick up another yellow card on Tuesday. Mexes is unlikely to be left out because Blanc will not want to break up his solid partner-ship with Adil Rami.

Utility back Anthony Reveil-lere could come in for Debuchy and Menez could be rested with Florent Malouda or Mathieu Valbuena taking his place. Yann Mvila, fit after suffering an ankle sprain in the build-up to the tournament, could return in the midfield for Yohan Cabaye after the Newcastle United player picked up a minor knock against Ukraine.

“The game against Greece will be very different. They are dangerous,” said the 52-year-old coach. The three-time European champions, eyeing their first title since 1996, beat Portugal 1-0 and Netherlands 2-1 before their final victory over Denmark but Loew said the Greeks would be a tougher nut to crack and his team would need to up the ante.

Despite German hopes of a comfortable win, their opponents have conceded more than one goal only twice in 24 games. “No one was counting on the Greeks. They are masters of efficiency,” said Loew.

“The Greeks have so far had three scoring chances in the tour-nament and scored three goals. It will be a good challenge for us to try and solve,” he said.

AntaraLOS CABOS, Mexico -

(kmb26)

(kmb30)

KHARKOV - Cristiano Ronaldo at his thrilling best scored twice for Portugal as they reached the last eight with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands, eliminating the Dutch who ended a miserable Euro 2012 campaign without a point. Man of the match Ronaldo delivered the tour-nament’s best individual display so far with goals in each half, after Rafael van der Vaart had raised Dutch hopes with a wonderful strike in the 11th minute, as they finished runners-up to Germany.

The Germans beat Denmark 2-1 in the other Group B game to finish with nine points ahead of Portugal on six, Denmark

with three and the Dutch who had nothing to show for their efforts. Portugal will now face the Czech Republic on Thursday in Warsaw while the Dutch will go home to lick their wounds.

There was no complaint about the outcome f rom a N e t h - e r - lands team that two years ago were World Cup runners-up but this time around de-served their place among the tournament’s ‘also-rans’. “I am responsible and there-

fore failed in this tournament

but at this moment I am not thinking

about my future,” said Netherlands coach Bert van

Marwijk as the inquest began.Like the Dutch, Ronaldo had

come in for criticism but the winger’s classy touches, electrifying pace and composed finishing proving to be the dif-ference between the two teams. For the Netherlands, their first exit from a tour-nament in the group stage since winning the European title in 1988 was all they deserved after three straight defeats.

Related to the high farmland conversion in Bali, Chairman of the Indonesia Farmers Association (HKTI) of Bali, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, admitted if it happened due to structural policy and the shift in socio-economic values resulting in the necessity and compulsion for farmers to sell their farmland.

Besides, it also happened due to excessive develop-ment in business sectors outside of the agriculture (tour-ism, industry and trade) and the progressive increase in the selling value of taxable object (NJOP) exceeding the farmer’s affordability had prompted their intention to sell the farmland.

“Now, the farmland for production purposes is getting narrower. Ideally, each farmer household cultivates 2 hectares of land, but in reality they only cultivate 0.35 hectares,” he said.

No wonder he said, farmers were then referred to as small farmers or smallholders. Such conditions resulted in the helplessness and lack of seriousness in farmers to cultivate their farmland. Even, he said that farmland conversion during the period of 1997-2007 happened to approximately 661 hectares or about 0.8 percent per year. Most of the farmland was used for a tourism facilities including hotels, restaurants, villas, as well as residential and office development.

Suparta explained if the condition was left un-checked, it could lead to degradation of land and water resources, the weakening of farmer competi-tiveness, low work efficiency, poor marketing, lack of seriousness and self-reliance of farmers as well as weak law enforcement.
