NEW YORK — Josh Hamilton will play Maggie Gyllenhaal’s (JIHL’-ihn-hahlz) unhappy husband in the upcoming Broadway revival of “The Real Thing.”

The Roundabout Theatre Com-pany said Tuesday that Hamilton will join the cast that also includes Ewan McGregor and Cynthia Nixon. Pre-views begin Oct. 2 and it will open officially Oct. 30 at the American Airlines Theatre.

“The Real Thing,” Tom Stoppard’s play about two couples dealing with their relationships and fidelity, won the 1984 Tony Award for best play. Sam Gold will direct the revival.

Hamilton was recently featured on “American Horror Story: Coven,” and will appear in Fox’s upcoming “Gra-cepoint.” His recent New York stage credits include Neil LaBute’s “Reasons to be Happy” by MCC Theater and Theresa Rebeck’s “Dead Accounts” on Broadway.

Joshua James Corbett, 39, was later found to have a stash of illegal weapons including two fully automatic rifles and a machine gun at his home. But he was unarmed when he broke into Bullock’s home, affidavits in the case said.

Investigators said the sleeping actress was awakened at 6:30 a.m. on June 8 by banging noises, opened her bedroom door and saw a dark-clad stranger mov-ing toward the stairs.

Bullock, who has portrayed brave, strong women on screen, took quick action, locking the door and summon-ing police.

“Sandy, I’m sorry!” the man shouted as he was being taken away. “Don’t press charges.”

Police determined Corbett had scaled the gates of the home and forced open a locked sunroom glass door. He remains in jail awaiting trial and could face more than seven years in prison.

The incident shocked Hollywood and resurrected memories of other stars

plagued by stalkers. Actress Rebecca Schaeffer was slain by a stalker in the 1980s and her death led to tightened laws to make stalking a crime and keep stalkers away from their prey.

Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Ryan Seacrest, Paris Hilton and others became stalking victims but were not harmed.

The writings of Corbett, detailed in a search warrant affidavit filed by the Bull-ock case investigators, revealed the depth of his obsession. Many stalkers have been ordered to undergo psychological counseling as part of their sentences.

Corbett had a letter he had written to the actress the day before the break-in professing his love for her and insisting he was her husband and the father of her son.

“I love you. You are very special to me and without you in my life there is only misery,” said the letter....You are my girl!...You are my wife by law, the law of God and you belong to me and me to you.”

Corbett revealed he had been watch-ing Bullock’s movements, saw her return home from an American Film Institute gala on June 5 and wished he could fol-low her inside the gates to her house. “I will be waiting by those gates when you decide to open them to me...,” he wrote.

At another point, he told the actress, “You are so hot and intelligent, lissome and taught (sic).”

The letter was signed, “Your husband, Joshua James Corbett.”

The police affidavit said Bullock ar-rived home about 1 a.m., showered and went to bed. She was awakened early the next morning by banging noises she thought were coming from her third-floor workout room. The sound then shifted to the living room and she became con-cerned for her safety, the affidavit said.

Police said Corbett was walking down the stairs when they arrived. He acknowledged breaking in, they said, and told them he was trying to alert Bullock that her security was not impervious to intruders. He said he didn’t want to upset Bullock and thought she would not be home.

The question of why Corbett was stockpiling arms at his home and at an airport hangar remained unanswered.

When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. SEMARAPURA - After bad weather condition last week, the coastal region of Klungkung looked rundown. It happened because of the coastal areas got marine debris from other regions. As a result, after the weather improved, the debris mounted. Meanwhile, the effort to clean it up was very minimal.

On Segara Beach, Kusamba village, Dawan subdistrict, for instance, along the coastline could be seen the marine debris messing the local environment. A local fisherman, Nengah Mundra, said on Tuesday (Jul 15) that the situation often occurred when it was hit by bad weather. Seeing the condition, the fishermen simply did cleaning up individually. However, such a way was unable to overcome the problem of litter on the shoreline. He said that similar conditions did not only occur on Segara Beach, but also on other beaches in the Klungkung area.

Other than due to bad weather, the rundown condition in the area was also kindled by coastal erosion. Especially the Segara Beach was often used as a venue to carry out various religious ceremonies by the Hindus, such as cremation, ngeroras, mecaru and ngangkid. Rubbish of the ritual activities also contributed greatly to the volume of trash on the beach. Such people’s coastal activity was also fre-quented by foreign travelers. Besides, the crossing activity also became a tour-ist attraction. Unfortunately, the coastal condition was filled with rubbish. “On the whole, they see the fishing activities and the making of traditional boats,” he said. He also added that fishermen were quite overwhelmed to keep the coastal

sanitation. Supposedly, local residents were invited to resolve the waste problem through mutual assistance.

After disrupted by bad weather, the crossing activity had run normally since Tuesday (Jul 15). Similarly, the activity of local fishermen increasingly turned nor-mal. Nevertheless, the recent bad weather made most people anxious because when the bad weather occurred, natural disasters such as tornadoes and landslide began to threaten the people moving on the coastal or the hill areas. Moreover, it had started to have an impact on some areas such as the fire at a number of traditional markets and hotels on recent days.

The Coordinating Unit Team Leader (Satkorlak) of the Disaster Mitigation, Made Kasta, reminded on Monday (Jul 14) in order the crossing services from the Kusamba traditional harbor to Nusa Penida could be more careful by observ-ing the weather condition before making the crossing and doing fishing activities. He asked the harbormaster to pay careful attention to the current situation. Anticipat-ing the bad weather, his party had been alerting disaster mitigation team to moni-tor the potential for disaster in the entire Klungkung region in corresponding to the hazard map of the team. “I have instructed the team to be standby for 24 hours alter-nately,” he said.

Currently, Klungkung government has not owned a special agency to deal with the impact of natural disasters. Establish-ment of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Klungkung County remains in the legislation draft and has just been sent to Regional Legislation Program. (kmb31)

Nyelung ritual is held every ten years. Local farmers presented vari-ous agricultural products ranging from tubers, fruits, animals such as ducks, chickens to pigs. In addition nyelung, it was also equipped with all replicas of farming tools. Jelung is paraded from Puseh Temple of Buahan, Buahan village, to Desa Temple at Buahan Kaja with a dis-tance of approximately 10 km.

Secretary of Subak Gede Buah-an, Nyoman Jejel, said the Nyelung ritual was held by residents as a tradition having been inherited from the ancient times. Based on stories of local senior figures, the Subak Gede Buahan frequently faced crop failure due to pests and diseases. Responding to the incidence, subak

members took the initiative to apply for the safety of the plant at Pucak Pausan Temple at Buahan Kaja.

In invoking the safety of the agricultural crops, subak members promised to deliver the crops ev-ery 10 years at the Pucak Pausan Temple if the application was granted. Following the request, the agricultural crops at the subak areas were protected from any pests and diseases and the agricultural crops were capable of producing as expected. “Since the request has been fulfilled, the nyelung tradition was conducted every 10 years,” he said.

In the nyelung procession, the subak members carried the nyelung paraphernalia in relay from Buahan

to Pucak Pausan Temple. Jelung was given the offering in the form of dapetan oblation. Afterward, as the peak of the event was sur-rounding the temple for three times, followed by the presentation of bebangkit ritual means.

According to Jero Mangku Ketut Mardika, the word nyelung was derived from the word luung (‘good’ in Balinese—Ed). Due to God’s grace, condition of the subak members turned good in the sense of peaceful and prosperous. On that account, the subak was reasonable to implement the nyelung ritual as an expression of gratitude to God for all the graces bestowed to people, especially the members of Subak Gede Buahan. Recent reports in medical jour-nals detail nickel allergies from a variety of personal electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones. But it was an Apple iPad that caused an itchy body rash in an 11-year-old boy recently treated at a San Diego hospital, according to a report in Monday’s Pediatrics.

Nickel rashes aren’t l i fe-threatening but they can be very uncomfortable, and they may require treatment with steroids and antibiotics if the skin erup-tions become infected, said Dr. Sharon Jacob, a dermatologist at Rady Children’s Hospital, where the boy was treated. Jacob, who co-wrote the report, said the young patient had to miss school because of the rash.

The boy discussed in the Pediatrics report had a common skin condition that causes scaly patches, but he developed a dif-ferent rash all over his body that didn’t respond to usual treat-ment. Skin testing showed he had a nickel allergy, and doctors traced it to an iPad his family had bought in 2010.

Doctors tested the device and detected a chemical found in nickel in the iPad’s outside coating.

“He used the iPad daily,” Ja-cob said.

He got better after putting it in a protective case, she said.

CHICAGO — A study says using spoons as measurements for medicine can lead to potentially dangerous dosing mistakes. The results, published online Monday in Pediatrics, underscore recom-mendations that droppers and syringes that measure in milliliters be used for liquid medicines — not spoons.

The study involved nearly 300

parents, mostly Hispanics, with children younger than 9 years old. The youngsters were treated for various illnesses at two New York City emergency rooms and sent home with prescriptions for liquid medicines, mostly antibiotics.

Parents were contacted after-ward and asked by phone how they had measured the prescribed doses. They also brought their measuring devices to the research-ers’ offices to demonstrate doses

they’d given their kids.Parents who used spoonfuls

“were 50% more likely to give their children incorrect doses than those who measured in more precise milliliter units,” said Dr. Alan Mendelsohn, a co-author and associate professor at New York University’s medical school.

Incorrect doses included giving too much and too little, which can both be dangerous, he said. Underdosing may not adequately

treat an illness and can lead to medication-resistant infections, while overdoses may cause ill-ness or side effects that can be life-threatening. The study doesn’t include information on any ill ef-fects from dosing mistakes.

Almost one-third of the parents gave the wrong dose and 1 in 6 used a kitchen spoon rather than a device like an oral syringe or dropper that lists doses in mil-liliters.

Less than half the prescriptions specified doses in milliliters. But even when they did, the medicine bottle label often listed doses in teaspoons. Parents often assume that means any similar-sized kitchen spoon, the authors said.

“Outreach to pharmacists and other health professionals is needed to promote the consistent use of milliliter units between prescriptions and bottle labels,” the authors said.

CHICAGO — Unexplained rash? Check your iPad. It turns out the popular tablet computer may contain nickel, one of the most common aller-gy-inducing metals.

Chris Gaither said the company had no comment.

People with existing nickel allergies are at risk for rashes from nickel-containing devices. According to an advisory about cellphones on the website of the Nickel Institute, a global association based in Toronto

representing nickel producers, the risk arises from contact with nickel-plated outer surfaces “over prolonged periods of time.”

“The length of time required to elicit an allergic reaction will vary from 5 or 10 minutes to never, depending on the sen-sitivity of the individual,” the

advisory says.Nickel rashes also have been

traced to other common products including some jewelry, eyeglass frames and zippers.

Jacob said evidence suggests nickel allergies are become more common, or increasingly recog-nized. She cited national data

showing that about 25 percent of children who get skin tests for allergies have nickel aller-gies, versus about 17 percent a decade ago.

She said doctors need to con-sider electronic devices as poten-tial sources when patients seek treatment for skin rashes.

Bali PostDENPASAR - Central Statistics

Agency (BPS) estimates that the paddy production in Bali in the sec-ond half of 2014 declined by 1.21 percent to 880,234 tons of unhulled rice milling standard (GKG) com-pared to the same period in 2013 reaching 882,092 tons.

The Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, said the decline in the paddy production happened due to the decrease in harvest area of 1.17 per-cent. “The decrease in the unhulled rice production amounting to 1,858 tons in 2014 was due to reduction in the harvest area reaching 1,753 hectares or minus 1.17 percent,” said Siregar in Denpasar.

In addition to narrowing farm-land, the decline in unhulled rice production in the second half of 2014, said Siregar, was also caused by the delay in the growing season due to improvement of irrigation facilities in the city of Denpasar and Badung County.

Although in the second half of 2014 the unhulled rice production in Bali was predicted to decline, the existing data he owned indicated if in the first half of 2014 the unhulled rice production in Bali would in-crease to 2.41 percent.

According to Panusunan, the in-crease was caused by an adequately significant increase in the productiv-ity of paddy in Bali. “From our data,

the productivity of paddy in Bali in the first half of 2014 was recorded to show an increase of 2.58 percent, up 1.50 quintals per hectare,” he continued.

The increase in paddy production in Bali in the first half of 2014 oc-curred due to several factors, includ-ing a lot of rice fields in Jembrana, West Bali that formerly used to cul-tivate watermelon in turn applying organic fertilizers.

Related to the increase in the paddy productivity in the first half of 2014, the Head of Bali Agriculture and Food Crop Agency, IB Wisnu Ardana, revealed the increase in the paddy production in Bali during the first half of 2014 happened due to the agricultural sector in Bali had been implementing the integrated agricultural system. “So, the harvest yield is maximal, although the land area remains the same,” he said.

He added the decline in paddy yields during the second half of 2014 was not only caused by the condition of the diminishing farmland, but also crops failure due to pest attack in some areas becoming the central production. “This decrease occurred because there were some areas threatened by crop failure due to pest attack as in Singaraja and Karangasem. As a result, the quality of unhulled rice production decreased,” he said. (kmb27)

Bali government excessively responds to impact of AEC 2015 Bali Post

DENPASAR - The Center for Business Economic Data Analysis, Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University mentioned the statement of a number of Bali government officials that trade liberation considered as a threat was excessive attitude. Actually, when the ASEAN free trade began in late 2015, the goods and service product of ASEAN would be free from the competition threat of goods and services from China and India and some other countries.

version), mainly China and India having been threatening the ASE-AN goods and service products due to competition. Then, after the enforcement of ASEAN free trade, there would be new trade opportunities where the products of ASEAN countries would be cheaper because there would be no longer tariff barriers among the ASEAN member countries.

“The ASEAN free trade agree-ment was kindled by the flood of import products from China to the entire market of the ASEAN countries so they are holding down the deficit of ASEAN trade. So, the ASEAN free trade agreement

is a step to protect the ASEAN countries against the import prod-uct threats of China and India,” he explained.

Secondly, he said the strength-ening of ASEAN’s trade balance would certainly become a new strength required in order to restruc-ture the domestic economy, foreign exchange savings and increased intra-ASEAN trade opportunities. Strengthening of the domestic economy of ASEAN countries in turn was expected to be a pillar for the development of capabilities and competitiveness of goods and services for the ASEAN countries to enter the global trade market.

“Although there is space for a wider market share as a result of the stem against China’s products in the domestic markets of the ASEAN countries, it does not necessar-ily mean if the domestic interests among the ASEAN countries will mutually benefit,” he said.

He explained the free trade among the ASEAN countries would tend to form the price equalization in the ASEAN domestic market region that would have an impact on the shift of resources based on law of comparative advantage. ASEAN countries that were not efficient in certain resources would immedi-ately switch to another resource having better advantages.

“Free trade can be predicted to have an impact on the shift of com-modity based on production cores of each ASEAN country, so there will be micro small- and medium-scale enterprise switching from products developed at this time to another product having a market superiority base compared to other

countries,” he explained. It was mentioned the shift of

goods and service products would be difficult to avoid as a result of the free mobility of goods and services due to expansion of mar-ket segmentation as a result of tariff barriers against the products from outside the ASEAN member countries. However, this market expansion would have an impact on business opportunities, expansion of employment and of course the formation of new revenue.

“This confidence becomes the basis for all ASEAN countries why they have agreed to open the era of free trade among the ASEAN countries. Thus, the ASEAN free trade poses a very significant step forward in the effort to organize the domestic economic resilience of the ASEAN which is expected to become the foundation of eco-nomic resilience as well as manage the increasingly strong competi-tiveness in order to enter the global market,” he said. Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimates that the paddy production in Bali in the second half of 2014 declined by 1.21 percent to 880,234 tons of unhulled rice milling standard (GKG) compared to the same period in 2013 reaching 882,092 tons.

Until now, the U.S. has insisted on hitting Russia with penalties in concert with Europe in order to maximize the impact and present a united Western front. The Eu-ropean Union has a far stronger economic relationship with Rus-sia, making the 28-nation bloc’s participation key to ensuring sanctions packages have enough teeth to deter Russia.

But those same economic ties have made Europe fearful that tougher penalties against Russia could boomerang and hurt their own economies. After weeks of inaction, the officials say the U.S. is now prepared to move forward alone if EU officials fail to enact strong sanctions during a meeting Wednesday in Brussels.

The U.S. official cautioned that no final decisions would be made until after the European meeting. The officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly by name.

The White House’s willing-ness to punish Russia without European backing comes as the Obama administration faces criti-

cism that its repeated warnings about tougher sanctions are little more than empty threats.

“Sometimes I’m embarrassed for you, as you constantly talk about sanctions and yet, candidly, we never see them put in place,” Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican, said during a Senate hearing on Ukraine with administration of-ficials last week.

The U.S. and Europe have lev-ied coordinated sanctions on Rus-sian individuals and companies connected to Moscow’s alleged destabilization in Ukraine. Obama administration officials argue that those penalties have had an impact on Russia’s economy, citing Inter-national Monetary Fund statistics showing a downgrade in Russia’s growth this year.

However, officials have ac-knowledged that the sanctions have not had an impact on Rus-sian President Vladimir Putin’s decision-making in Ukraine.

State Department spokesman Jen Psaki said Tuesday that if Putin “cares deeply about his people, about the economy, his own country,” the sanctions

would shift his calculus.Obama and European coun-

terparts have vowed to take even broader sanctions targeting Rus-sia’s lucrative energy and defense sectors, as well as access to finan-cial markets, if Moscow failed to quell tensions with Ukraine. But it is unclear what the new package of U.S. sanctions would include.

During a Group of Seven meeting in Brussels in early June, Western leaders warned Russian President Vladimir Putin those penalties could be levied within a month if Russia did not meet specific conditions, includ-ing recognizing the results of Ukraine’s May 25 election and start a dialogue with President Petro Poroshenko, ending support for the pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine and stopping the flow of arms across the Russian border.

The end-of-June deadline the West outlined for Putin came and went with little follow-through from Russia, yet no penalties were levied by the U.S. and Europe.

TOKYO — A Japanese nuclear plant won preliminary approval Wednesday for meeting stringent post-Fukushima safety requirements, clearing a major hurdle toward becoming the first to restart under the tighter rules.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority accepted a report that found that design upgrades and safety improvements at Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s two reactors at the Sendai Nuclear Power Station have complied with the requirements introduced last July.

The regulators said the plant is now deemed capable of avoiding severe accidents such as the Fukushima Dai-ichi meltdowns in an equally serious situation.

The authority is expected to give final approval after a 30-day techni-cal and scientific public comment period.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing to bring at least some of Japan’s 48 reactors back online, saying a prolonged shutdown hurts Japan’s economy.

All of Japan’s 48 remaining reactors are offline for safety checks and repairs since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami hit Fukushima Dai-ichi, causing multiple meltdowns.

It will still take a few more months to get the No. 1 and No. 2 reac-tors at Sendai Nuclear Power Station online, officials said. The operator has to clear final steps such as on-site checks, followed by obtaining local government consent.

Police have designed a safety mea-sure in relation to the Eid celebra-tion remaining around the corner. Three X-Ray detectors have been prepared to secure the homecom-ing and backflow traffic. One of the detectors had been placed at Gilimanuk and two others were used as backup because the two X-Ray detectors posing the assistance of provincial government were intended for detecting humans. In other words, the device will be used for international events such as the APEC and others.

It was conveyed by Spokesper-son of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, Tuesday (Jul 15). He explained

the three X-ray detectors were still functioning properly. Everything was ready to be used for security needs later on. “The device granted by the National Police Headquarters was placed at Gilimanuk. Mean-while, two other devices are still placed in the headquarters of Bali Police Mobile Brigade,” he said.

When asked about the security preparation, Hery admitted that his party would still conduct a meeting with his ranks, Wednesday (Jul 16). “Regarding the amount of person-nel and the security pattern, they will be determined tomorrow in the meeting. However, the security will be made as usual because the Eid remains around the corner, namely on July 22,” he said. (kmb21)

It was revealed in the meeting in relation to the celebration of Eid initi-ated by the Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto, Tuesday (Jul 15). Present at the meeting were the Commander of the 1610/Tabanan District Military Command Rudi Hermawan, inter-faith leaders, Tabanan Transportation Agency, Municipal Police, Radio Amateur Organization of Indonesia (Orari), Central Communication (Senkom), RRI, RAPI, Crane, and management of Soka Restaurant.

The free Eid homecoming plan was finalized again in the meeting. Participants of the free homecoming would be departed from the front of the office of Tabanan regent on Jalan Pahlawan at 09:00 a.m.

“The destination cities of the free homecoming are Jember, Malang and Surabaya. In addition, this free homecoming also aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents on the highway,” said Tabanan Police Chief, Dekananto, while chairing the meeting.

Related to the security, Tabanan Police gave special attention to the safety of homecomers. Other than providing monitoring posts, the homecomers were also prepared with

China’s economic transforma-tion since the 1980s has relied heavily on industrial investment and exports but those engines have run out of momentum. Chinese export manufacturers are surren-dering some of their low-cost ad-vantage as workers demand higher wages. Industrial growth has been so intense that many industries now have too many factories and suffer diminishing returns on every dollar of new investment. The cost to the environment and public health has been high.

Now, the government wants Chi-nese to save less and spend more to make the country’s own consumers a more important driver of growth. China’s economy expanded 7.5 percent in the April-June quarter after growing 7.4 percent in the first quarter. Some 7.4 million new jobs were created in China in the first half of the year, a boost for country’s authoritarian rulers who fear politically destabilizing job losses.

The second quarter figure is positive but isn’t a game changer for Asia or the global economy. China has overtaken Europe and the U.S. to become the biggest mar-ket for numerous Asian nations so they must also adjust to its slower growth rates while dealing with sluggish recoveries in the West. Some of the challenges in Asia are outlined here.

JAPANLong a manufacturing and tech-

nological powerhouse, Japanese pride was injured when China leaped ahead to become the world’s second-biggest economy. Japan re-mains far more affluent than China but its political and business elites are plagued by a sense of insecurity as population decline generates a powerful backdraft against efforts to inject vigor into the economy.

Cue Shinzo Abe, Japan’s en-ergetic prime minister, who has pushed through a lavish expansion of the money supply to counter the deflation, or falling prices, that

China growth pickup reassuring but no game changer

Associated Press Writer

A pickup in China’s growth has fortified confidence the world’s second-biggest economy will avoid a precipitous slowdown as the past decade’s explosive growth decelerates to the 7 percent range.

has had a dissipating effect on the economy for two decades.

In the very short-term, Japan’s economy is weathering the impact of an increase in sales tax that was needed to help repair tattered gov-ernment finances. The economy likely contracted in April-June after surging at a 6.7 percent an-nualized pace in the first quarter when spending, to beat the tax increase, rose sharply.

The longer-term outlook turns on an economic policy overhaul needed to boost Japan’s waning competitiveness and cope with its declining and aging popula-tion. “We are looking for ways to change the Japanese economy,” says economy minister Akira Amari.

INDIAA new government is boldly

promising to lift India’s economic game and if it delivers, India could within a few years outshine China as the region’s fastest-growing economy. Right now, though, the Indian economy is close to bedridden. A tough global eco-nomic climate was part of India’s problem. But erratic government policymaking that chilled new investment by foreign and local businesses was also a significant culprit and added to the drag on growth from India’s Soviet-like bureaucracy.

Just three years ago, officials were brash enough to insist India would grow at rates above 10 per-cent. They had some justification because growth rates were already approaching those levels but then they plunged to settle below 5 percent.

While developed nations would be thrilled with growth of even 3 percent, poverty-ridden India needs very rapid growth to provide jobs and improve living standards for the estimated two-thirds of its 1.2 billion people who live on un-der $2 per day. The IMF forecasts growth of 5.4 percent this year and 6.4 percent next year.

One catch for the rest of Asia is that India’s heavy reliance on imported oil means many of the benefits of faster growth would flow to the Middle East and other oil producers. Stronger Indian demand for crude could also jack up prices, troubling neighbors also reliant on imported energy.

Partly for cultural reasons, In-dians are prodigious importers of gold so economic recovery might boost gold imports but at the ex-pense of a greater lift in imports of manufactured goods from its Asian neighbors.

SOUTH KOREASouth Korea ranks behind Chi-

na, Japan and India in overall GDP but its rapid industrialization following the Korean War has made it wealthy and a powerful global player in industries includ-ing autos, consumer electronics, nuclear power, shipbuilding and entertainment. Despite all that suc-cess, South Koreans are habitually looking over their shoulders and comparing their progress to the rest of the world. Part of the insecurity might stem from having bellicose and unpredictable North Korea and Asia’s two powerhouses, China and Japan, as neighbors.

Like other wealthy nations,

South Korea is also constantly noodling whether its progress has come at too high a price. Those fears were realized earlier this year when hundreds of teenagers died in a ferry sinking that South Koreans blamed on a culture of profit first, safety last.

The central bank earlier this month said growth would be reduced to 3.8 percent this year from the expected 4.0 percent as consumer spending wilted after the disaster. That would still be the fastest growth since 6.5 percent in 2010 but disappointing given how much stimulus the government has added to the economy.

The near- and medium-term prospects for South Korea’s export-reliant economy hinge on recover-ies in China, Europe and the U.S. Longer term, policymakers want to make domestic consumption and entrepreneurship bigger factors in growth. That will be a difficult shift because of the immense power wielded by the country’s industrial conglomerates.

SOUTHEAST ASIAAs individual countries, the 10

nations of Southeast Asia often fall off the international radar unless a big news event such as a natural disaster, coup or plane crash draws

attention to the region. But clubbed together under a grouping known as ASEAN, the region boasts 625 million people, GDP of $3.8 trillion and annual trade with the rest of the world of $2.4 trillion.

Growth in Southeast Asia, which spans countries as different as the wealthy city-state of Singapore and poor landlocked Laos, is likely to be driven in the next decade by rising numbers of middle income households, trade within its fledg-ing customs area, and massive expansion of infrastructure.

After a 5.2 percent expansion in 2013, the Asian Development Bank expects growth in the five largest economies of Indonesia, Malay-sia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to be steady in 2014 and accelerate to 5.6 percent in 2015. Yet the outlook could be derailed because the region’s two biggest economies, Indonesia and Thailand, face political ruptures.

Indonesia’s recent presidential election failed to produce a clear winner, sparking fears of instability. The official results will be out by July 22. A coup earlier this year in Thailand followed months of de-stabilizing street protests. Military rule has ended the protests but the political divisions may remerge once new elections are called.

Even, the device touted to be worth billions of rupiahs is only displayed around the Checkpoint II of Gilimanuk Harbor (exit point). To protect it from adverse weather, it has been made a spe-cial booth with a roof right beside the road leading to identity card checkpoint. The imported device is covered with large tarp to pro-tect it from rain and heat.

From the information gath-ered, since the device arrived in Jembrana at the end of 2012, it has been moved for several times. After being used for training at Hotel Jimbarwana, the sophisti-cated device was placed in park-ing area of Jembrana Police for several months. Then, it was taken to Gilimanuk Harbor, but was not installed. It was only placed until the turn of the Jembrana Police Chief. Since handed over, it was never utilized whereas a number of personnel had been trained to

operate the device.Previously, the device was not

installed because its installation required a roomy place and away from human traffic due to the radia-tion can have an effect on human health. It is expected to be a solu-tion amid the frequent escape of contraband that cannot be reached by manual inspection. Other than in Jembrana, the X-ray detector was also placed at Padang Bai, Karan-gasem. Until now, the inspection made by the officers at Gilimanuk is still performed manually.

It is unfortunate that such inter-national standard security device cannot be used, especially during the backflow period with high density of vehicle traffic coming to Bali. Wide area of Gilimanuk Harbor does not allow the x-ray detector to be placed in the harbor area. With an average of car traffic reaching 600-650 units, it will be difficult to do the inspection.

A legislator of Bali House, Ida Bagus Ketut Birawa, deeply deplored the device worth billions of rupiahs as it was not used. Actu-ally, provision of such device was to support the safety and comfort of Balinese people from various threats of goods or objects that could potentially disrupt the secu-rity of Bali.

The basic problem for the op-eration of the x-ray detector lay in the budget. “Operating cost of the device is not allocated so that it cannot be operated. Necessar-ily, the Bali government allocates the budget for the operating cost,” he explained. The place to put it did not matter as it was a mobile device. According Birawa, crime could happen whenever there was an opportunity. This Jem-brana politician was concerned if the device was long neglected because it could not be used op-timally. (olo)

Bali PostDENPASAR - This year, the

National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Bali Chapter is getting a shock-ing case. Seven students of one of the junior high schools in Denpasar were caught after inhaling shisha, a kind of cigarette originating from Arab. Shisha has stronger effect or 26 times of the effect of cigarette, so it is categorized into hazardous products.

It was presented by the Head of BNN Bali, I Gusti Ketut Budiartha, Tuesday (Jul 15). The suspicion if the seven students inhaled shisha began when they were found drowsy and limp in classroom. Having been further explored, in fact the seven students just inhaled shisha pur-chased in one of the Kebab stores in Denpasar. “It is sold for IDR 35,000 per package. The seven students collected money to purchase shisha to be inhaled alternately,” said Budi-artha. Afterward, the BNN provided guidance for the students with their parents. As for the seller, according to Budiartha, the business was then closed.

He added, currently people should be aware of the new packaging of drug. Other than shisha, there were also other new packages such as Jape-Jape. This product was similar to marijuana, but the effect was much

stronger than marijuana. At the moment, Budiartha realized

the use of drug was targeting a very young age. The current trend was the use of crystal meth and ecstasy. By all means, it was used abuzz. As of June 2014, his party had recorded 249 cases of drug and liquor arrested by the BNN Bali. The arrest was based on information from the public or informants of the BNN.

According to Budiartha, the han-dling of drug case was very important to involve the role of community from all walks of life. Awareness to report when there were transactions and drug use in the region was an important step to break the chains of drugs in society. “The information provided will be confidential and the reporter does not need to be afraid,” said Budiartha.

In breaking the chains of drug syndicate in the community, one of the steps taken by the BNN was em-bracing the drug addicts to undergo rehabilitation. “If the drug users are healed, it will surely break the drug transaction itself,” he said. In addition to treating the addicts, it was consid-ered important to give protection to the public regarding the hazards of drug. To that end, the BNN always made socialization on drugs and its hazards to community figures and young people. (kmb24)

“We had a discussion about the follow up of the bilateral agreements we made before, especially after the visit of In-donesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Manila last May 23,” said Marty.

The minister said Indonesia and the Philippines will soon discuss a continental shelf between the two countries after the successful conclusion of negotiation of Exclusive Economic Zone during Yudhoyonos visit to Manila last May.

As to the South China Sea issue, Marty said Indonesia and the Philippines had made the commitment to materialize the Declaration of Conduct (DoC) made by ASEAN countries and China.

Jakarta - The Golkar Partys inter-generations cadre has asked Aburizal Bakrie, popularly known as Ical, to resign from his position as general chair-man, as he was considered to have failed to achieve the target.

“What is best for Ical now is to resign. It is not worthwhile to keep appearing in various forums and leaving bad trails for the party,” said a senior politician of Golkar, Fahmi Idris, during the Golkar inter-generations cadres press confer-ence here on Tuesday.

Fahmi also pointed out some failures of Ical, such as partys mismanagement, which had led to a decline in Golkars vote during legislative election, and his plan to run for presidential candidacy, but failed and then decided to stand as vice presidential candidate. “But then again, he failed and decided to support other parties,” he said.

As a senior cadre, Fahmi deplored how Golkar Party that had won legisla-tive election in the last two terms, now has become a supporter of Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa presidential can-

didacy, which was promoted by parties from the third and fifth list. “This is the worst failure,” he stressed.

Agreeing with Fahmi, another senior politician of Golkar, Ginandjar Kar-tasasmita said the party now had lost its identity as a great party, so it had to be restored to its past glory.

“Golkar is a great party, and it is impossible for such a great party to not run for election but only support oth-ers. So, we want Golkar to come back on its track, to its charter and bylaw,” Ginandjar explained.

During the press conference, the inter-generations cadre of Golkar also declared that all components of the party needed to act to save the party by con-ducting the 9th Golkar Party National Conference at the latest on October 4, 2014.

The presidential election is being contested by two pairs of presiden-tial and vice presidential candidates: Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa and Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla.

The winning pair will be officially inau-gurated as the countrys seventh president and vice president in October 2014.

Jakarta - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) will deliver the donations that have been collected from the Indonesian public to Pal-estine through Palestines Red Crescent.

“Palestines Red Crescent is our partner in Palestine as fellow national organizations. Palestines Red Crescent President Younis Al-Katib told us that the most appropriate donation was in the form of cash,” PMI Secretary General Budi Adiputro said here on Tuesday.

PMI has opened three bank accounts to receive donations for victims of Israeli mili-tary aggression in Gaza, Palestine.

The Palestinian Red Crescent, with the support of the International Red Cross Com-mittee (ICRC) and Egypts Red Crescent, has been helping the victims, mostly civilians.

Adiputro said the Palestinian Red Cres-cent is currently in need of medical equip-ment, medicines, and ambulances to treat the injured victims.

In several Indonesian cities, such as Pontianak (West Kalimantan), Mataram (West Nusa Tenggara), Jayapura (Papua), Medan (North Sumatra), Gorontalo (Su-lawesi), Bangka Belitung (Sumatra), Riau Province, and Yogyakarta, the public have

raised money to be donated to the Gaza residents.

The Indonesian government has pledged US$1 million to help Gaza residents who have been bombed by Israel over the last eight days.

Israels heavy bombardment of densely populated Gaza Strip has put many Palestin-ians at risk, especially Palestinian children. They have become the victims of worsening violence in Gaza as the number of Palestin-ians killed in the deadly Israeli airstrikes continues to increase.

The death toll has risen to 173, with more than 1,270 injured. The United Nations Of-fice for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has estimated that as many as 80 percent of those killed during the attacks were civilians. Among them, at least 33 children have been killed in Gaza since the Israeli military campaign was launched last Monday, according to the latest reports.

“No child should have to suffer the terrifying impact of such violence,” said UNICEF, Childrens Rights and Emergency Relief Organization Executive Director Anthony Lake, in a statement released on Sunday, stressing a further escalation in violence and its impact on children suffering from the ongoing violence.

Still, Typhoon Rammasun’s 150-kilometer (93-mile) wind and blinding 185-kph (115-mph) gusts, brought down trees, electric posts and ripped off roofs across the capital of 12 mil-lion people where government offices and schools were closed. More than 370,000 people moved from high-risk villages to emergency shelters in six provinces.

In a shantytown at the edge of Ma-nila Bay, hundreds fled when strong wind tore tin roofs off their shanties. Most were drenched by the rain before they reached an evacuation center with the help of firemen and rescue personnel.

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said he was relieved there were no reported deaths after the typhoon sideswiped his city although its wind still downed trees and damaged seaside shanties, prompting more than 1,000 residents to evacuate.

“It was like a drill,” he said. “We hauled people away from dangerous

seaside areas, whether they liked it or not.”

Elsewhere, a woman died after being hit by a fallen electric post in Northern Samar province and two men, including one traveling on a motorcycle, were separately pinned to death by falling trees in two other provinces. Three members of a fam-ily were killed when a wall collapsed on them in Lucena city, southeast of Manila and an 11-month-old boy died after being hit by a wall in a house in Cavite province near the capital, officials said.

Three fishermen have been re-ported missing in Catanduanes, near Albay province, where Rammasun made landfall late Tuesday. There were no immediate estimates of the damage in communities that lost power and telephone connections while being pummeled by the wind and rain.

With last year’s massive devasta-tion and deaths from Typhoon Haiyan

still in many people’s mind, officials said 373,000 people readily evacuated after being told of the danger.

Polangui Mayor Cherilie Mella Sampal said 10,000 of the 80,000 residents in her town in Albay, about 340 kilometers (210 miles) southeast of Manila, were evacuated before the typhoon struck Tuesday. Sampal said she saw the wind topple electric posts and lift roofs off houses. Sampal said residents were worried after witness-ing Haiyan’s horrific aftermath in the central Philippines last November.

“We’re used to and prepared for ca-lamities,” Sampal told The Associated Press by cellphone. “But when people heard that the eye of the typhoon will hit the province, they feared we may end up like the victims of Yolanda,” she said, referring to the local name of Haiyan.

Haiyan’s strong winds and tsuna-mi-like storm surges flattened towns, leaving at least 6,300 people dead and more than 1,000 missing.

MOSCOW — Two employees of the Moscow subway were detained by investigators on Wednesday in the wake of a deadly rush-hour derailment.

The accident inside the tunnel on Tuesday killed 22 people and hurt 136, many with life-threatening injuries. More than 1,100 people were evacuated from the train, which was stuck between two stations in Moscow’s west, in a rescue operation that lasted more than 12 hours.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement Wednesday that they have detained the head of the track department and his deputy. Investigators said a new rail switch at the point where the train left the tracks was not properly installed during repair works in May and was in fact attached to the rail by a single, 3-millimeter wire.

There is another line under construction nearby and the switch was to direct to the trains to a new tunnel once the line is launched.

The two men have been questioned, and the investigators are preparing to file unspecified charges against them, the committee’s spokesman Vladimir Markin said.

The Russian capital’s airports and transit systems have been a prime target for terrorists over the past two decades, but multiple officials vigorously dis-missed terrorism as a possible cause.

In recent months, subway workers have complained of declining safety standards in the system and disorganized measures for aiding stricken pas-sengers.

He said that his party would continue to push the government to increase the budget for promotion so that the growing tourism potential could be utilized to improve people’s welfare. “Increasing tourism will certainly have implications on the increase of people’s welfare,” he said.

A tourism observer of Bali, Bagus Soediana, previously stated that promot-ing tourism was not adequate just by taking advantage of a sheet of brochure to draw travelers to spend holidays in Indonesia, especially Bali.

“The decline in tourism promotion fund is certainly not possible to draw wealthy travelers. Technically, the tourism promotion is not enough just by disseminating a sheet of brochure in order to draw visitors,” he said.

According to him, the overseas promotion activities could also be under-taken in the form of roadshow through table top and party in a building aside from making presentation through DVDs, and other promotional media.

“By all means, overseas promotional campaign would require sufficient funds. If campaign funds are only sufficient to spread brochures so that the guests obtained will consist of the low-budget travelers,” said the Advisor to the Bali Tourist Transportation Association or Pawiba. (kmb27)

Contador, a two-time winner of cycling’s biggest race, broke his shin in a violent fall on Monday to leave the Tour at the 10th stage. The 31-year-old Spaniard flew back to Madrid on Tuesday, where he underwent exhaustive medical checks.

“The doctor told me that surgery would only lead to more trauma on the knee and would only delay my recovery more,” Contador said in a statement on Tuesday. “The good news is that no tendons or ligaments were damaged and the fracture is in the best possible place.

“I’ll have to stop everything for two weeks and, until the wound heals, my leg has to be immo-

bilized.” Contador continues to grapple with his early exit, which left Vincenzo Nibali in command.

“I couldn’t sleep last night thinking this situation wasn’t real but, when I opened my eyes, I could see it was,” Contador said.

Contador was determined his leg could heal in time for the Vuelta, which begins Aug. 23.

“The doctors have told me it’s practically impossible that I’ll be able to race in the Spanish Vuelta, but let’s see how my leg progress-es,” the Tinkoff-Saxo Bank rider said. “The doctors have not given me any hope but I will work very hard in the coming weeks and let’s see what that leads to.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Recent free agent Pau Gasol says signing for the Chicago Bulls over NBA champion San Antonio or Oklahoma City came down to a gut decision.

Gasol says on Tuesday that after speaking with Bulls players Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, “instinct told me to pick Chicago.”

The 7-foot (2.13-meter) Spanish forward says Chi-cago was a logical choice since “without doubt it is one of the championship favorites in the East along-side Cleveland.”

The 34-year-old Gasol, who departs the Los An-geles Lakers after five-plus seasons, says while the Spurs and Thunder were options “nothing is guaranteed wherever you sign. I’m happy with my choice.”

Gasol also expects newly acquired forward Nikola Mirotic, who was signed from Spanish club Real Ma-drid, to “make an immediate impact” with the Bulls.

The Mercedes Formula 1 team has announced Nico Rosberg has signed a multi-year contract extension to stay at the Brackley-based squad.

Rosberg, currently leading the championship after the first nine races of the season, joined the team in Mercedes’ return to Formula 1 at the start of the 2010 season.

The 29-year-old German gave Mercedes it first win since its return in the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix. Since then, Rosberg has scored another five victories and eight pole positions.

“I am very proud to drive the Formula 1 Silver Arrow of the modern era,” said Rosberg, who re-signed his contract earlier this week. “As a German, the heritage of Mercedes-Benz is very special for me, and I am proud to be able to represent the best car brand around the world.

“It has been a difficult road to get to where we are now - but everybody kept believing and, thanks to the fantastic support from Mercedes-Benz, we are now lead-ing the way in F1.

“I’m looking forward to the next years together, when we will keep pushing to win even more races - and, hope-fully, championships.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff added: “Nico has been part of the Silver Arrows project since day one and he has a big stake in the development of the team since 2010. His speed, commitment and focus have all helped to give clear direction and to drive the team forward.

“With his performances in 2014, Nico has demonstrat-ed to the outside world what we knew already in the team: that he is one of the very top drivers in Formula 1.

“Winning is difficult. It comes with a lot of effort, especially in a club like Juventus where there is the obligation of victory,” Conte said in a video message posted on Juve’s website. “But I showed I’m a winner.”

The 44-year-old Conte led Ju-ventus to three consecutive Serie A titles. There had been speculation toward the end of last season that Conte wanted to leave Juventus but then he had appeared to change his mind. He had one year remaining on his contract.

While the job of Italy national team coach is open after Cesare Prandelli resigned following the Azzurri’s first-round exit from the World Cup, Conte wouldn’t give any clues to his next move.

“Right now I’m thinking about the present and the decision taken,” he said. “An enormous thank you goes to the lads for what they showed me. ... We did something historic and nobody can take that away from us.”

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil just pulled off the World Cup. Next up is Rio de Ja-neiro’s 2016 Olympics, which poses an even bigger challenge.

Cement trucks are busy, creating bil-lowing dust clouds, and girders are ris-ing along Avenida Embaixador Abelardo Bueno, the road running in front of the main Olympic Park in the suburb of Barra da Tijuca.

“It’s going, it’s going,” said a worker at the construction site, wearing an orange helmet, blue overalls and introducing himself as Mauricio Lima.

Rust-orange beams sprouted behind him as he talked, a superstructure that in two years will become the Olympic media and broadcast centers. “There is a lot to do, but things are moving,” he added.

The World Cup overcame fears about protests, half-finished stadiums and cha-otic transport to deliver an exciting tour-nament that culminated with Germany’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time in the final.

Brazil’s humiliating 7-1 loss against Germany in the semifinals was a blow to the home country, and the collapse a week

ago of an overpass — part of a World Cup project in the southeast city of Belo Hori-zonte — killed two people. Eight workers died in World Cup stadium construction accidents. Rio’s Olympics have had their own problems.

A few months ago, International Olym-pic Committee Vice President John Coates called the city’s preparations the “worst” in memory. Other IOC members openly lambasted Rio. In response, the IOC sent in executive director Gilbert Felli to work as a troubleshooter.

His presence has helped, and Felli expects most projects back on schedule by September.

“I’d like to be clear,” Felli said in an in-terview with The Associated Press. “Until the games are delivered I’m always con-cerned. But it’s not the case to say we’re not going to make it. It’s not possible that we won’t make it.” Felli believes the World Cup gave the Olympics a boost.

“The perception of the Brazilians is much more positive,” Felli said. “It’s good for the games. They have better trust in themselves to deliver the games. My view is to say ... the Brazilians will deliver ex-cellent games. But we have to work every day for it. Nothing is a done deal.”

BERLIN — At a party 24 years in the making, hundreds of thousands of Germans showed their admiration and adoration for their World Cup winners in a parade to the Brandenburg Gate on Tuesday. The players, in matching black T-shirts bearing the number “1,” lapped up the love by playing up to the estimated 400,000 people packing the “fan mile” in front of the landmark.

Fans began arriving overnight to secure good spots to welcome home coach Joachim Loew’s team and the trophy. Germany’s fourth World Cup, the first since 1990, crowned years of work by Loew to modernize the team, and followed near misses at recent tournaments. “We’re all world champions!” Loew told the crowd. “Of course, it was a long way to the title, and an incredibly tough one in the end. But we’re incredibly happy to be here with the fans now.”

At a stage set up at the Gate, Mario Goetze, the scorer in the 1-0 win over Argentina in the final on Sunday, was greeted with deafening cheers by the sea of fans waving black, red and gold Germany flags.

Midfielder Toni Kroos led the crowd in a chant of “Miro Klose” — a tribute to veteran striker Miroslav Klose, whose two goals took his World Cup tally to 16 and made him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. As the players waited to take their accolades, the fans welcomed each of them with a chant of “football god” — giving Bastian Schwein-

steiger, Thomas Mueller, Goetze and Klose the loudest cheers.

“We’re just mega-proud of this achieve-ment, after standing here in 2006 and 2008 as third and then as second — and now we’ve finally done it after this long journey, with this sensational team,” defender Per Mertesacker said. There were problems with the sound system, meaning most of the players’ words were lost to the crowd. The supporters didn’t mind, though, and cheered even louder as de-fender Jerome Boateng, back in his hometown, shouted: “I can’t hear you!”

The team plane landed at Tegel Airport in midmorning after flying low over the “fan mile.” Captain Philipp Lahm led the team off the aircraft holding the trophy aloft, to a chorus of “Football’s Coming Home” from fans on the airport’s viewing terrace.

He was followed by Schweinsteiger, draped in a German flag and sporting a bandage over a cut under his right eye, the result of a tackle in the final.

From the airport, the team set off on a two-hour trip to downtown Berlin in a bus painted with the years of Germany’s World Cup vic-tories: The previous occasions were in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

The team changed shirts and climbed aboard an open-top truck for the last part of the trip to the Brandenburg Gate, crawling through the crowds at snail’s pace. The festive crowds fol-lowed in the wake of the bus as it passed. “It’s indescribable,” fan Till Uhlig, from Hannover, said of the number of supporters.

Reuters Chelsea’s new striker Di-

ego Costa, a 32 million pound ($54.87 million) signing from Atletico Madrid at the start of the month, has completed his transfer and signed a five-year deal, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea. Everybody knows it is

a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and team mates,” Costa, 25, was quoted as saying on the club’s website (www.chelseafc.com). “I know the high quality of the squad I am joining.

“I would like to thank every-body at Atletico who made me into the player I am. It was an

incredible time for me, but now I am starting a new adventure and I hope to win many trophies with Chelsea.”

Powerful and direct, the Bra-zilian-born striker built a strong reputation in Spain as a fine finisher, scoring 64 goals in 134 appearances for Atletico, and helping them to the Spanish title last season and the Champions League final.

ROME - France midfielder Yann M’Vila has signed for Inter Milan from Rubin Kazan, the Serie A club announced on Tuesday. “Now it’s of-ficial: Yann M’Vila is an Inter player. He will be unveiled to the media on Saturday,” Inter said on their official Twitter feed.

The club are yet to announce the details of the deal, but the 24-year-old

is likely to join on a year-long loan with Inter having the option to buy at the end of the season.

At the end of last month, M’Vila finished a 16-month ban from playing for France following an unauthorised night out while on international duty with his country’s under-21 side.

“We’ve lost a great coach but great players and a smart club remain in place,” Buffon said. “Now we need to stay together even more and show what we’re worth, disregard-ing Conte.” A letter from Juventus president Andrea Agnelli to Conte was also published.

“Dear Antonio, you were a great

leader for our lads and today’s news saddens me enormously,” Agnelli wrote. “I’m thinking about the three years spent together, three years that led us to create history for this club: three consecutive Serie A titles, two Italian Super Cups, but above all an exponential growth curve.

“But faced with personal feelings and reasons, even a president needs to take a step back,” Agnelli added.

Possible replacements could include former Inter Milan and Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini or ex-AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri — who are also both being mentioned for the Italy job.

A former standout midfielder for Juventus, Conte was named Juventus coach in May, 2011. The title after his first season in charge

was Juve’s first since before the 2006 match-fixing scandal.

Scandal touched Conte in his sec-ond season in charge, when he was banned for four months for failing to report a fixing scandal relating to his time as Siena manager in 2010-11. He denied any wrongdoing.

Uniquely, wherever they come from and go to, they always make their time to have a break for tasting the chicken rice of Kedewatan. Even, it has become something like ‘a tradition’ for tourist guides, travel agencies or local communities.

There are plenty of restaurants offering different types of mixed rice. However, the most visited locations are Warung Mardika, Jero Mangku, Ibu Agung and Warung Adnyani. Each restaurant is averagely visited by 200 people per day. Among those tourists, about 25 percent are foreign tourists.

Aside from having the original design of Balinese tra-ditional architecture, the village also preserved the ancient and classical dance. It was the art in the form of Calonarang mystical drama entitled Kunti Sraya. In addition, the vil-lagers of Kedewatan were also good at various kinds of art creativities such carving, painting and playing gamelan music. Therefore, star hotels, villas, inns, and art shops within the territory of customary village had become a source of revenue for the village.

The village formerly dropped in by Rishi Markandeya was inhabited by totally 2,237 people spreading across two ham-lets, namely the Kedewatan and Kedewatan Anyar.

“The important factor is the implementation of the DoC. I have discussed with the Philippines foreign minister that it is also important for ASEAN countries to consolidate action before negotiating with China,” said Marty

(kmb27)

(kmb24)

Even, the 1619/Tabanan Military District Command under the commander of Rudi Hermawan would assign 15 personnel at Soka monitoring post. “Military personnel will be assigned at each monitoring post for 1x24 hours,” he explained. On that occasion, Rudi Hermawan also paid the attention to security aspect for homecomers and a number of tourist attractions. “Do not forget to tighten the security at tourist attractions. Many incidents recently occurred when they trav-eled,” he said. (kmb28)

“The ASEAN free trade will benefit the members of the ASEAN economies, but at the same time it will be detrimental to non-member countries, such as China, India, Korea and others. So, it will be ex-cessive if considering the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) a threat,” said Chairman of the Cen-ter for Business Economic Data Analysis, Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University, Dr. Sudjana Budhi.

According to him, the scenario of ASEAN free trade would ben-efit the member countries (trade creation) and be detrimental to non-member countries (trade di-

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali.

“I forget the exact amount how much it was cut back. Approximately, it’s 11 percent. It was done because the amount of our state budget also decreased,” he said.

According to him, the cutback in tourism promotion fund did not have an impact on the number of travelers spending holidays in Indonesia, so that tourism stagnated. “No, it does stagnate. Our statistical data continue to show an increase in tourist arrivals. Now, it has reached nearly 9 million people. Last year, it attained 8 million tourists,” he said.

He admitted the increase in the number of tourist arrival

had been above the national and even international aver-age, although the promotion of Indonesia was still lacking because the promotion could also be done through social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and others.

“Although the promotional budget is cut back, we can still carry out the promotion by regular overseas visit. In-ternal efforts undertaken are through provision of services that continues to be improved,” he concluded.

Separately, Chairman of the Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) of Bali Chapter, Ketut Ardana, said the tourism development should be persistently

promoted. Even, all the developing countries certainly did tourism promotion, including Indonesia, especially Bali.

“Our tourism continues to grow, such as new destina-tions being developed in the region and the changes in the tourism supporting infrastructure. These need voicing through promotion so that travelers spending holidays here do not easily get bored,” he said.

According to him, the promotions made by govern-ment and tourism industry were still separate. Actually, to achieve maximum results the promotion needed to be integrated between the government and industry. “The government and tourism players should be compact so as not to overlap as what happens today.
