Obama, Romney in tight race

Only a win can keep City’s European dream alive

Mere hours after No Doubt debuted Looking Hot this weekend, the music video was pulled down by the band in reaction to criticism over its depiction of Native Americans. On Saturday, an open letter on behalf of Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young was posted to their website regarding the controversy:

“As a multi-racial band our foundation is built upon both diversity and consideration for other cultures. Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history. Although we consulted with Native Ameri-can friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people.

“This is of great concern to us and we are removing the video immediately. The music that inspired us when we started the band, and the community of friends, family, and fans that surrounds us was built upon respect, unity and in-clusiveness. We sincerely apologize to the Native American community and anyone else offended by this video. Being hurtful to anyone is simply not who we are.”

Reportedly, Stefani and Kanal can be seen dressed as Native Americans and fighting their bandmates who are dressed as cowboys. The single comes off the band’s latest album, Push and Shove.

“Wreck-It Ralph,” a 3-D animated family film about a video game villain who tries to break free of his role, is the largest box-office opening ever for Walt Disney Animation, which has produced count-less cartoon classics (though it doesn’t include Disney’s lucrative Pixar Animation).

Though the hurricane had forced the closure of hundreds of movie theaters in the New York-New Jersey area, most were open for business by the weekend. As many as 100 theaters were still closed on Friday, but many of those were restored during the weekend.

“We didn’t really have a

playbook for this,” said Hol-lywood.com box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “But the numbers show that audi-ences across the country, and particularly in the Northeast, wanted to go to the movies and they did.”

With many East Coast chil-dren out of school on Friday,

Disney saw an uptick of busi-ness for Friday matinees to the well-reviewed “Wreck-It Ralph.”

“’Wreck-It Ralph’ became something of a distraction and an opportunity for fami-lies to do something separate of the storm,” said Dave Hol-lis, Disney’s head of distri-bution. “Schools being shut down on Friday also played a role as parents were look-ing for things to entertain the kids and keep them out of the cold.”

The weekend box office was not only undeterred by the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, it was buoyed by it. Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” opened strongly with $49.1 million and Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight,” starring Denzel Washington, soared to a $25 million debut. Both opened above expectations, capitalizing on East Coast audiences looking for distraction amid the recovery from the storm.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BDF expected to support global peace, security

AntaraKUTA - The upcoming 5th Bali

Democracy Forum (BDF) is ex-pected to support global peace and security for the world’s economic development, according to a for-eign affairs ministry official.

“The Bali Democracy Forum is a regional forum for the exchange of experiences and the learning of best practices among nations,” said Siti Nugraha Mauludiah, the foreign affairs ministry`s techni-cal cooperation director, here on Monday.

She noted that the forum has be-come a prominent global platform for promoting democracy. “We don`t try to enforce democracy on other countries, but we share experiences, particularly between democratic countries and those progressing towards democracy,” Siti explained.

“However, Indonesia wants

the entire Asia-Pacific to become a democratic region in order to support economic development and improve the people`s welfare across the region,” she added.

She expressed hope that the Bali Democracy Forum would success-fully promote the importance of democratic values. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, on November 8.

The event is expected to be at-tended by 12 heads of state from, among others, Iran, Afghanistan, Australia, Yemen, Timor Leste, South Korea, and New Papua Guinea.

At least 27 ministers and repre-sentatives from 73 countries will participate in the forum. “Up to Monday, 1,243 people have regis-tered themselves, and we expect that the number of participating countries will be more than 73,” Siti said.

Bali PostAMLAPURA - The anguish of

hundreds of families at Kalanganyar Kaler hamlet, Seraya Barat village, Karangasem, has been complete. Aside from facing regular clean water crisis every year in dry season, the road along 2.5 km to the area has been damaged. Not to mention, there is no power access. Local resi-dents are forced to connect a small and long cable to their family in the neighboring village, namely the Bukit village.

Entourage of the Deputy Gov-ernor of Bali AA Puspayoga was continuously shaken up in the car although they rode a car whose con-dition remained good in the visit to Kalanganyar Kaler hamlet, Seraya Barat village on Saturday (Nov 3).

Acknowledgedly, the road to the settlement of residents along 2.5 km had been severely damaged since about five years ago. According to resident, the road had been paved previously. Probably due to a thin asphalt layer, 97 percent of the road

section had been damaged where its condition was bumpy and the gravels had been quit whereas the road from the south to settlement of residents ascended sharply. Such condition was very hazardous to road users. “Similarly, there has been no electric network to Kalanganyar Kaler. Be-sides, the residents do not have access to water pipeline because the area is located on highland and in the corner of the border with Bukit village,” said the Headman of Seraya Barat, I Wayan Ripa, Saturday (Nov 3).

Admittedly, there was a water source on Tabuan Hill at the foot of Bisbis Hill or Seraya Hill. But a few months after the rainy season, the springs had reduced. Besides, since many people were using the water flowing from the Mount Tabuan, it was not enough for hundreds of families at Kalanganyar Seraya. “Luckily, the Deputy Governor Pus-payoga and the entourage are willing to come and see in person the diffi-culties faced by our residents. They are very happy as they are assisted

to get clean water,” said Ripa.He said the damaged road issue

had been actually discussed and proposed in the development plan meeting in the Karangasem subdis-trict since a few years ago. Allegedly, due to less guardianship, though the subdistrict was given priority, the proposal seemed to vanish in the development meeting of Karangasem Regency. “So far, we have not got any repairs. As a matter of fact, people dream of the road repair so that they can buy or find clean water by pig-gybacking a jerrycan,” he said.

Ripa expressed his gratitude be-cause farmers at his village worked so tenaciously to support their family. In 1984, Kalanganyar was a producer of citrus. At that time, it was not yet devoured by CPVD. Now, some residents still cultivated citrus and their earnings were good enough. Likewise, farmers attempted to apply technology to plant peppers in plastic pots, making use of bags of rice wrap-per. However, in this dry season their pepper plants dried up. (013)

As monitoring in Lovina on Sun-day (Nov 4), the contractor just began its work about a week ago. At the lo-cation, heavy equipment seemed to be parked on the beach. From the beach, a number of deck floor constructions jutting into the sea looked to have been installed. Meanwhile, no single worker was visible. It was in accor-dance with the employment contract where the work lasted for 60 days. Therefore, they would get day-off on Sunday and national holidays.

A tourist guide, Ketut Goran, said the ship quay project in Lovina was actually very good to complete the facilities in Lovina, mainly to accom-modate yachts. Unluckily, the project undertaken for two months was worried if it could not be completed. Moreover, the waves would be huge during November and December, so that the condition would certainly disrupt the project implementation.

“Apparently, it cannot be accom-plished within two months. So far, it has just been undertaken for one week and installed deck floor construction, not to mention the upcoming rainy

season and huge waves, they will definitely impede the work,” said one of the residents. Aside from the worries if the project could not be accomplished within short period, the resident also assessed the quay built was too short.

Location of the project belonged to tidal area. When the tide was low, the quay was ascertained not to function because the quay was too short. Ide-ally, the quay should be built longer to the sea, so when the tide was low the yachts were still able to berth. “At the location, the sea water at low tide will be shallow. It means the short quay cannot be used,” said the resident.

To be noted, the Culture and Tour-ism Agency of Buleleng received the funding from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy for the fiscal year 2012 worth IDR 1.2 billion. It was given after the Buleleng Regency proposed a fund to build a yacht quay. Aside from being used for the event like the Sail Indonesia, it was meant to facilitate the fishing boats that would transport tourists taking a marine tour on Lovina Beach. (kmb)

Ship quay project in Lovina feared to be incompleteBali Post

SINGARAJA - A quay project for small ship in Lovina Beach, Buleleng, is feared to stagnate. It is triggered by a short time limit to accomplish the project lasting for two months only, from November to December this year. Besides, the quay is considered too short and feared if it cannot function optimally.

Associated PressTORONTO — BlackBerry-

maker Research In Motion said Wednesday that its much-delayed new smartphones are now being tested by 50 wireless carriers around the world.

The Canadian company called it a key step as it prepares to launch the new BlackBerry 10 software and phones in the first quarter of next year.

The phones are seen as criti-cal to RIM’s survival. The re-lease will come as the company struggles in North America to hold onto customers who are abandoning BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phones.

“I’m very pleased to confirm that we have passed a critical milestone in the development of our brand new mobile computing

platform,” RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement. “This process will continue in the coming months as more carriers around the world formally evalu-ate the devices and our brand new software.”

RIM’s current software is still focused on email and messaging, and is less user-friendly and ag-ile than iPhone or Android. Its attempt at touch screens and a tablet were a flop, and RIM lacks the apps that power other smart-phones. RIM’s hopes hang on BlackBerry 10. It’s thoroughly redesigned for the touchscreen, In ternet browsing and apps experience that customers now expect. A full touchscreen device will be released first followed shortly after by a physical key-board version.

Heins, who took over as CEO

in January after the company lost tens of billions in market value, had vowed to do everything he could to release BlackBerry 10 this year but said in June that the timetable wasn’t realistic. Heins says he can turn things around with BlackBerry 10.

“I have spent the last several weeks on the road visiting with carrier partners around the world to show them the BlackBerry 10 platform and to share with them our plans for launch. Their response has been tremendous,” Heins said. “The hard work will not stop here as we build toward launch.”

The new BlackBerrys will be released after the holiday shopping season and well after Apple’s launch of the iPhone 5, Apple’s biggest product intro-duction yet.

Shipments of Android-based smartphones made by Samsung, HTC and other vendors nearly doubled in the third quarter, reach-ing 136 million units, according to industry research firm IDC. The strong sales boosted Android’s share of the worldwide smartphone market to 75 percent, from 57.5 percent in the year-ago period.

Apple’s share of the market in-creased to 14.9 percent during the third quarter, from 13.8 percent a year earlier. Apple’s iPhone uses the company’s iOS mobile software.

While Android pulled further ahead of Apple’s iOS, its gains have come mainly at the expense of rival operating systems Blackberry and Symbian, with shipments of phones running those systems declining significantly.

IDC analyst Kevin Restivo cited Android’s close “tie-ins” to Google’s broad array of online ser-vices, which include online search and maps, as an important asset that has helped Android grow.

“Google has a thriving, multi-faceted product portfolio. Many of

its competitors, with weaker tie-ins to the mobile OS, do not,” Restivo said in the IDC report, which was released on Thursday.

Google offers its Android operat-ing system free to phone manufac-turers, and primarily makes money from online advertising when consumers access its services on the devices.

Research in Motion’s Blackberry operating system had 7.7 percent share in the third quarter, compared with 9.5 percent a year earlier.

Symbian, which had 14.6 per-cent share a year ago, had a 4.1 percent share in the third quarter. Smartphone maker Nokia still of-fers the Symbian software in some of its phones, but the company has largely shifted to Microsoft Corp’s software.

Mobile versions of Microsoft’s software accounted for 3.6 percent of the smartphone market in the third quarter. But IDC said that the recent launch of the new Mi-crosoft Phone 8 operating system could improve its position in the fast-growing market.

SEOUL - Samsung Elec-tronics said Sunday that global sales of its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone had topped 30 million since its debut in May.

“The Galaxy S III continues to be a runaway favourite with customers around the world,” JK Shin, head of Samsung’s IT and mobile communications division, said in a statement.

The third version of the Galaxy S series offers a more powerful processor that lets users watch video and write emails simultaneously as well as a large 4.8-inch (12.2-cm) screen.

The company sold 56.3 mil-lion smartphones, including its

flagship S III, in July-Septem-ber, representing 31.3 percent of the global market, more than twice as much as bitter rival Apple’s share, research firm IDC said last month.

Samsung and US rival Ap-ple have been embroiled in a long-running patent battle in 10 countries, including the United States and Germany, with the pair accusing each other of stealing designs and technology.

In August Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 bi l l ion in damages for i l -legally copying iPhone and iPad features for its Galaxy S smartphones, but a Japanese court later rejected Apple’s claim that Samsung stole its technology.

Field observation made last Sunday indicated that residents came around 09:00 a.m. by rid-ing a motorcycle. They unfurled a banner reading their demands to investors and also carried a red-and-white flag. From the roadside of Seririt-Gilimanuk, the residents walked away and yelled leading to one of the meet-ing rooms located in the steam power plant megaproject.

Action of the residents was strictly guarded by a joint team of the riot squad from Buleleng Po-lice and Celukan Bawang Marine Police. In addition, the security was also assisted by military personnel. The strict security was made because there was an issue spreading if their demand could not be met they would forcibly shut down the power plant project. Representatives of the residents were then received by investor of the PT General Energy Bali (GEB) and China Hudian Engineering Corporation (CHEC).

The meeting between the rep-resentatives of residents and investor was facilitated by the Operations Head of the Buleleng Police, Ida Bagus Wedanajati, and Celukan Bawang Marine Police Chief, Ketut Sumadi. During the

meeting, the representatives of residents expressed their demands to investors. One of them regarded the residents’ land in the project area that had not been released by investor. Such unreleased land belonged to 33 families. Besides, the investor also promised to resolve the certificate of the land purchased, but in reality it had not been fulfilled yet.

In addition, the residents also asked compensation to investor for the public facilities such as cemeteries, mosques and grant lands that had not been met, either. Moreover, the residents claimed to be disappointed by the investor that seemed to have bro-ken its promise to hire more local workmen. Even, the investor em-ployed more workmen from out-side the area. Sadly, the investor drove away the local workmen by deliberately bargaining the wage that was much cheaper than the wage of workmen in general.

“Should we be given dust only, while investor pays the workman for IDR 50,000 only whereas the normal cost of workman here now is IDR 75,000 per day? Due to low wage, most of the builders are automatically from outside the area,” said a representative of resident, Hadi Imron.

Responding to the issue, the investor promised to accommo-date the aspirations of residents. Authority to resolve the problem lay in the investor leadership of PT GEB and CHEC. “We’ve re-corded all the demands revealed to be submitted to management leadership,” said the representa-tive of investor.

Results of the meeting were then presented in front of dozens

of residents. They claimed not to be satisfied with the attitude of investor. The situation was tense when they insisted on demand-ing the investor’s promise to resolve the problems. Receiving no response, they shouted again to close the project. After a tense, the residents finally received an explanation from investor with the promise that investor would respond them within one week.

Though having been promised within a week, people kept on threatening to rally with more participants. “For the time be-ing, we can receive it. If within a week there is no answer, we will involve more masses from four villages such as the Celu-kan Bawang, Pengulon, Tukad Sumaga and Tinga Tinga for the next rally,” said the resident. (kmb)

President-in-waiting Xi Jinping will have “no alternative” but to accept political change over the coming years, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters in Yokohama, near Tokyo.

“Now Hu Jintao era passed. Now Xi Jinping (is) becoming the president. I think there is no alternative except there is some political change,” the Dalai Lama said on the third day of a 12-day stay in Japan.

“Hu Jintao started to build har-monious society, stable society. So for stable society, I think gap (between the) rich and (the) poor must be reduced.

“Also you need an indepen-dent judiciary system, free press, rule of law. These are very, very important.

“So the goal, harmony, wonder-ful. Stability, wonderful. But use of secrecy, censorship and bully-ing... there is something wrong

in their system,” said the saffron-robed monk.

China denounces the Dalai Lama as a “splittist” seeking an independent Tibet, accusations he has repeatedly denied.

At a closed-doors congress be-gining Thursday, Beijing’s power players will anoint a new chief for the next 10 years. His regime will have to address growing anger over graft as well as challenges from a vocal band of dissidents and rights activists.

Vice president Xi is widely expected to be promoted to Com-munist Party general-secretary this week and then state president next year, succeeding Hu in a 10-yearly leadership change.

The Dalai Lama has a large following in Japan and he is a frequent visitor to the country, many of whose 127 million people practise some elements of Bud-dhism.

The 77-year-old Nobel Laure-ate said he believes democracy is the best system that China could adopt to solve the problems it faces, including a debilitating ter-ritorial dispute with Japan.

He said an over-emphasis on nationalism was at the root of difficulties.

Education materials are “ex-treme, almost like (saying) Chi-nese culture is (the) best, China (as a) nation is the best”, he said, adding “too much emotion (is) involved, that (is) not realistic.”

The Dalai Lama said a “lack of information” meant many Chinese people associate Japanese people only with wartime atrocities.

He said this led to the kind of anti-Japan outbursts that rocked China after Tokyo’s nationalisa-tion of a disputed East China Sea island chain in September, when shops were looted and businesses burned.

Bali PostDENPASAR - In order to

strengthen the preparation of stu-dents in facing the next national examination and getting a satisfac-tory outcome, the Bali Education Agency will distribute the national exam test prediction to junior high, high school and vocational school in Bali. The test prediction denot-ing a formulation of graduation competency standards (SKL) es-tablished by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP) will be

distributed through the Principal Working Meeting (MKKS) of each regency/municipality.

The Head of Bali Education Agency, AA Ngurah Gde Sujaya, told the matter to Bali Post. As planned, said Sujaya, the national exam test prediction would be distributed by the Ministry of Education and Culture to Education Agency throughout Indo-nesia early November 2012. As soon as the prediction test was received, his party would directly distribute it to schools denoting the national exam

participants through the MKKS in the regency/municipality. By that way, the schools could prepare their students early.

The national exam test predic-tion would be later described by schools into a variety of questions to measure the students’ readiness in the face of the real exam. With such test prediction, he said, the school would have a clear reference in preparing their students, so that the failure rate could be minimized as low as possible.

According to Sujaya, his party would also describe the national exam test prediction into a variety of national exam tryout test held in February 2013. In order to interpret the national exam test prediction into a variation of tryout tests, the Education Agency had established a test drafting team comprising the teachers of the subjects tested in the national exam. They were the best teachers in their own field and all of them had got training on the test making, both the training organized

by the Bali Education Agency and Ministry of Education and Culture.

“With this pattern, we expect the national exam tryout test is really synchronous with the competency standard specified by the BSNP. By doing so, the result of tryout will become a really effective way to measure the students’ readiness in the face of the real national exam,” he said while adding the level of difficulty of the tryout test was de-signed higher than the real national exam test. PITTSBURGH — A 2-year-old boy visiting the Pittsburgh zoo was killed Sunday when he fell off a railing that his mother had put him on top of to view a pack of African painted dogs, who pounced on the child and mauled him, police said.

It was not clear whether the boy died from the 11-foot fall into the wild dog exhibit area or from the attack, said Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

“It was very horrific,” said Lt. Kevin Kraus of the Pittsburgh police, who added that the dogs attacked “immediately” after the boy’s fall.

When the boy fell, other visitors immediately told staff members, who responded along with Pittsburgh police. Zookeepers called off some of the dogs, and seven of them immediately went to a back building. Three more eventually were drawn away from the child, but the last dog was aggressive and police had to shoot the animal, officials say.

The zoo was closed, and it was not clear when it would be reopen, authorities said. Authorities didn’t immediately release the name of the boy or his mother, but say she is 34-years old and lives in Pleasant Hills, just outside Pittsburgh. The boy’s father arrived on the scene soon after the accident, police said.

The dogs are about as big as medium-sized domestic dogs, 2 to 2½ feet high and 37 to 80 pounds, according to the zoo. African wild dogs are also known as cape hunting dogs, spotted dogs, and painted wolves. They have large, rounded ears and dark brown circles around their eyes and are considered endangered. The dogs normally live in a 1.5 acre exhibit called the Painted Dog Bush Camp that’s part of a larger open area called the African Savanna, where elephants, lions and other animals can be seen. Visitors walk onto a deck that is glassed on the sides, but open in front where the railing is located. Visitors can look out at the dogs below.

Zoo officials said there is also a mesh barrier beyond the railing, but Kraus said it was designed to catch small objects such as cameras, and not humans. In May, some of the dogs crawled under a fence and escaped into a part of the exhibit that’s usually closed. The zoo was on lockdown for about an hour as a precaution.

TOKYO - Japan’s battered elec-tronics giants are in a race against time, analysts say, as losses that threaten their very survival mount and as overseas rivals look like they are running away with the show.

The latest earnings season has been ugly for the likes of Panasonic and Sharp, which say they will post an eye-watering combined annual loss of more than $15 billion, un-derlining fears about the sector’s future.

Money-losing Sony offered a glimmer of hope by saying it was still on course to eke out an annual profit, after four years in the red.

However, Sharp nearly doubled its loss forecast to a record $5.6 bil-lion -- and voiced doubt for the first time over whether it could remain a going concern -- just a day after Panasonic said it would lose $9.6 billion in the year to March.

The sector’s myriad woes range from high labour costs at home and the strong yen to strategic blunders and a failure to keep up with rivals such as Apple and South Korea’s Samsung in the lucrative smart-phone and tablet market.

Japan’s formerly world-beating brands are falling further behind while they continue making every-

thing from phones and CD players to money-losing TVs and washing machines -- even as their key do-mestic market slows.

Among its missteps, the industry made huge investments in flat-screen televisions only to see prices plunge in an intensely competitive market, meaning razor-thin profit margins -- or none at all -- for firms that can ill afford them.

But they’ve largely resisted calls to abandon money-losing units, with longtime rivals Sony and Pa-nasonic saying they are teaming up to make televisions.

“Japanese electronics firms need to sift through their businesses, tak-ing what’s good and leaving what’s bad,” said Masahiko Hashimoto, economist at Daiwa Institute of Research in Tokyo.

Slick marketing campaigns and locally-tailored products products offered by profitable automakers such as Toyota and Nissan are noticeably absent among many of the nation’s once-mighty television giants.

Like many Japanese compa-nies, electronics companies are hamstrung by high labour costs at home and the stubbornly strong yen, which makes their exports expensive and eats into repatriated profits.

Top European officials in-cluding French President Fran-cois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti are due to spearhead efforts to reassure Asia that the long-running eu-rozone crisis is finally coming under control.

The diplomatic offensive is seen as a sign of the growing importance that debt-laden Europe places on Asia’s fast-growing economies, and its desire to counter increased US engagement in the region.

“We believe Asia is more important every day in terms of economic development,” Eu-ropean Commission chief Jose

Manuel Barroso told reporters in Bangkok ahead of the summit.

“Europe is one of the most important partners in Asia in terms of investment and trade,” he said. “We want to discuss the possibility of trade and investment but also the chal-lenges of stability and security in the region.”

European Union president Herman Van Rompuy is also among those converging on Laos, a landlocked country of just six million people on the verge of joining the World Trade Organization as it opens up its fast-growing economy.

But German Chancellor

Angela Merkel -- who warned over the weekend that it would take more than five years to overcome the euro debt crisis -- will not attend, sending her foreign minister instead.

Europe’s leaders may also lobby Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to deploy some of Bei-jing’s trove of about $3 trillion in foreign exchange reserves -- the largest in the world -- to invest in EU bailout funds.

Asian leaders for their part are expected to press Europe to take swift action to calm a cri-sis that has battered the world economy and set back efforts to reduce global poverty.

PUCAK Mangu Temple nestled on the peak of Mount Mangu, Petang subdistrict, is one of the Sad Kahyangan temples. The temple is believed to have existed since the time of megalithic cultures developed in Bali as proved by the discovery of considerable phallus heritage. In this temple, the phallus measures 60 cm high and 30 cm diameter. It was made from natural stones completed with rectangular (Brahma Bhaga), octagonal (Vishnu Bhaga) and spherical shape (Shiva Bhaga). It indicates that in ancient times the peak of mountain has became the center of worship to Lord Shiva. In the sanctum having two main temple areas, devotees generally invoke the health and prosperity for universe and ask to be kept away from any disease in plants or animals.

Pucak Mangu Temple, based on various sources, is mentioned to have been founded around 1830 by the King of Mengwi. Pujawali or anniversary of this temple falls on the full moon of the fifth month in Balinese calendar or around October. In addition, this temple has a unique ritual known as pangebek, intended to ask for crop fertility. On the temple anniversary, the ceremony takes place early in the morning in the Pucak Mangu Temple and then it is resumed with the one in the Penataran Agung Pucak Mangu.

Aside from the phallus shrine, the temple also has five-tiered meru shrine used to venerate the Lord Shankar (deity of Pucak Mangu) and three-tiered meru shrine as the abode of deity Teratai Bang. In this temple also occurs a Pancha Rishi shrine, stage, pepelik pavilion, padma shrine as the abode of Supreme God and padma capah shrine.

Meanwhile, in the Penataran Agung Pucak Mangu stand numerous shrines like the padmasana as the abode of Supreme God, padma tiga as the abode of Lord Shiva, Parama Shiva and Sada Shiva. The prithvi shrine and eleven-tiered meru shrine as the abode of deity Pucak Mangu is in accordance with the astadala (eight-leaved lotus) concept or the abode of Hyang Manik Gumawang, the son of Hyang Pasupati. Besides, there are also a nine-tiered meru shrine and five-tiered meru shrine.

In the Sad Kahyangan chronicle of Pucak Mangu written by Bappeda Badung, it is mentioned that Sima Gunung is a spiritual tradition carried out by people living on the slopes of Mount Mangu. The pilgrims of the Penataran Agung Pucak Mangu always organize the Sima Gunung traditional ritual coincided with the temple anniversary. Content and type of the ritual typically represents the mountain area community. Uniquely, the oblation is not put in the shrine but being held while standing up.

Similarly, all the ritual oblations are held. On the Sima Gunung ceremony, local pilgrims deliver to a black boar. Meanwhile, the food oblations containing pork and rice are put on lotus leaf. All are presented to Lord Shiva with the hope that all fruit and tuber plants can grow flourishingly and free from diseases. Another typical ceremony also belonging to Sima Gunung tradition is held on the full moon of the seventh month in Balinese calendar (around January) called Ngebekin. It aims to request in order the plants are not attacked by pests, while livestock such as pigs, cows, chickens and the like are not attacked by disease. (ded/from many sources)

The data of provisional tally conducted in the media center of the General Election Commission of Gianyar showed the pair of Agung Bharata and Made Mahayastra could win over the pair of Ning (Cokorda Putra Nindia-AA Gede Ngurah) in all the subdistricts. Even, in the Ubud subdistrict the latter pair of candidate also reaped a defeat.

Even, the defeat happened to the pair of Ning in the polling station (TPS) where the candidate of deputy regent, AA Gde Ngurah, lived namely at polling station 3, Kawan Sengguan hamlet, Gianyar. The pair of Ning only got 181 votes, while Bagus got 299 votes. Similar defeat also hap-pened in the polling station of the regent and deputy regent supported by the Golkar Party five years ago. At location of the Regent Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, at the

polling station 14 at Candi Baru hamlet, Ning gained 103 votes, while Bagus 182 votes. Polling station 4 at Sengguan Kangin denoting the voting area of Deputy Regent Dewa Made Sutanaya, Ning gained 142 votes while Bagus gained 348 votes. Besides, the defeat also occurred at location where the pair of Bagus and his team voted.

Meanwhile, the results of voting at the polling station of each can-didate, namely the polling station 7 at Pasdalem hamlet, Gianyar, where AA Gde Agung Bharata voted, Ning gained 66 votes, while Bagus gained 261 votes. At polling station 1 of Melinggih village, Ubud, where the candidate Made Mahayastra voted, Ning got 16 votes, while Bagus got 424 votes. In addition, the victory for the pair of Bagus also happened in Gianyar Prison. Of the 22 voters,

Bagus gained 19 votes, while Ning gained 3 votes.

Chairman of the PDI-P of Gianyar Chapter doubling as candidate of deputy regent for the pair of Bagus, Made Mahayastra, did not think if he could achieve such landslide victory. Moreover, the victory for the pair of Bagus in Ubud subdistrict reached 60 percent. As the result of latest survey conducted in Ubud subdistrict, the pair of Bagus lost slightly against the pair of Ning.

The defeat afflicting the pair of Ning in Ubud subdistrict also made Chairman of the Golkar Party of Gianyar Chapter doubling as the winning team for the pair of Ning, Made Dauh Wijana, surprised. Al-though he had not received all the data from the polling stations, his party would not make a scapegoat of the defeat. (kmb16)

LONDON — A British lawmaker called Sunday for the country’s media ethics inquiry to publish all the text messages it has between Prime Minister David Cameron and Rebekah Brooks, the ex-chief executive of Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper division, who now faces charges over the country’s tabloid phone hacking scandal.

The Mail on Sunday newspaper printed two previously unseen messages the pair had exchanged in 2009 on Sunday, prompting a call from opposition Labour Party lawmaker Chris Bryant for Judge Brian Leveson’s ethics inquiry to disclose the texts.

Some messages sent between Cameron and Brooks have already been studied by the national panel and released to the public, pro-voking embarrassment for the British leader. However, other texts — which the inquiry says were not relevant to its work — have been kept private. Bryant claims the messages have been withheld only because they are “salacious and embarrassing.”

Cameron, a school friend of Brooks’ husband, traded text mes-sages with the senior media figure at least once a week and offered her support after she stepped down in 2010 during the hacking scandal. The leader was also forced to acknowledge that he had occasionally gone horse riding with the couple, an image that ap-peared to reinforce claims by opponents that Cameron is part of a remote elite.

In one new message disclosed by the Mail on Sunday, Cameron wrote to Brooks: “The horse CB (Charlie Brooks) put me on. Fast, unpredictable and hard to control but fun. DC.”

Another message, written by Brooks to Cameron after his speech to his party’s 2009 convention, read: “Brilliant speech. I cried twice. Will love ‘working together’.

Cameron’s office said that the leader had met all requests made by the media ethics inquiry. “The Prime Minister has always been happy to comply with whatever Lord Justice Leveson has asked of him,” his office said in a statement, referring to the judge running the inquiry.

The two campaigns’ schedules left little doubt where the election would be won or lost: Obama was holding rallies in Wisconsin and Iowa. Romney was cutting a broader swath, with rallies in Florida, Virginia and New Hampshire. But the richest prize is Ohio, and on Monday both Obama and Romney were rally-ing their supporters in its capital, Columbus.

Under the U.S. system, the winner is not determined by the nationwide popular vote but in state-by-state contests, making these nine “battleground” states that are neither consistently Re-publican nor Democratic ex-tremely important in such a tight race. Romney and Obama are actually competing to win at least 270 electoral votes. The electoral votes are apportioned to states based on a mix of population and representation in Congress.

That raises the possibility of a replay of the 2000 election when Republican George W. Bush won the presidency with an electoral

vote majority, while Democrat Al Gore had a narrow lead in the nationwide popular vote.

Nationwide polls show the men locked in one of the clos-est presidential races in recent American history. But a majority of polls in the battleground states — especially in the Midwestern states of Iowa, Wisconsin and Ohio — show Obama with a slight advantage, giving him an easier path to the 270 electoral votes needed for victory. No Republican has won the White House without carrying Ohio.

The race was so close that the final national NBC/Wall Street Journal Poll, released on Sunday, showed Obama getting the sup-port of 48 percent of likely vot-ers, with Romney receiving 47 percent. The poll had a margin of error of 2.55 percentage points.

The final national poll from the Pew Research Center found Obama with a three-point edge over Romney, 48 percent to 45 percent among likely voters, an improved showing that indicates

the president may have benefited from his handling of the response to Superstorm Sandy. The Pew poll had a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.

If the election were held now, an Associated Press analysis found that Obama would be all but assured of 249 electoral votes, by carrying 20 states that are solidly Democratic or leaning his way — Iowa, Nevada and Pennsylvania among them — and the District of Columbia. Romney would lay claim to 206, from probable vic-tories in 24 states that are strong Republican turf or tilt toward the Republicans, including North Carolina.

Up for grabs are 83 electoral votes spread across Colorado, Florida, Ohio, New Hampshire, Virginia and Wisconsin. Of those, Republicans and Democrats alike say Obama seems in slightly bet-ter shape than Romney in Ohio and Wisconsin, while Romney appears to be performing slightly better than Obama or has pulled even in Florida and Virginia.

KHARTOUM - Sudan’s veteran Islamist leader Hassan al-Turabi, linked to Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, hopes US President Barack Obama will win a second term on Tuesday.

“Obama of course,” Turabi told AFP when asked about his US presidential preference during an interview.

“He’s gentle towards the Muslims generally,” Turabi said, and re-ferred to Obama’s childhood spent in Muslim-majority Indonesia, and his Kenyan father who was raised a Muslim.

Obama uses the word “terrorism” far less than his predecessor George W. Bush, and his name is a variant of the Arabic word “Ba-raka”, Turabi said.

“You know what ‘Baraka’ means in Arabic? Blessing.”Obama, a Christian, was elected the first African American US

president in 2008 and is in a tight race against Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Turabi has been a force in Sudanese politics for six decades, and was a key figure behind the 1989 coup which brought the Islamist regime of President Omar al-Bashir to power.

Sudan then became a notorious refuge for militant Islamists, includ-ing bin Laden, leading to American sanctions which Obama renewed last week.

Bin Laden, based in Sudan from 1991 to 1996, was killed in Pakistan by US special forces last year.

“He’s a media image. He’s not the true bin Laden I knew here,” Turabi says of the man whose organisation has been tied to dozens of atrocities around the world including the September 11, 2001 attacks which killed around 3,000 people in the US.

Turabi, whose daughter studies in Philadelphia, fell out with Bashir about a decade after the Islamist coup and now leads the opposition Popular Congress Party.

In and out of prison numerous times during his career, Turabi said he read Obama’s books behind bars.

Southeast Asian stock markets are among the world’s best perform-ers in 2012 and the region’s biggest economy is seeing record foreign direct investment after being up-graded by rating agencies for its newfound political and economic stability.

The allure has been fading in re-cent months though, as weak global demand for its commodities drags down its exports, leading to trade and current account deficits that have hurt the rupiah, making the currency Asia’s worst performer.

Imports also started falling in the third quarter, the first sign of weakness in the buoyant domestic demand that has been protecting the world’s fourth most populous nation from a harder downturn.

“Imports of capital goods remain weak, which suggests that invest-ment is slowing. This is negative for the growth outlook, productivity and currency,” said Prakriti Sofat at Barclays Capital.

The trade slowdown means the G20 economy is expected to post third quarter gross domestic prod-uct growth of 6.2 percent in data due later on Monday, still strong by global standards but softer than 6.4 percent in the second quarter, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

Over two-thirds of Indonesia’s exports are commodities such as palm oil and coal, which have been hurt by weaker Chinese de-mand. Dozens of coal ships were held up off the coast of Borneo as Chinese buyers disappeared, while thousands of workers in the sector have been laid off, industry insid-ers say.

Corporate profit growth has slowed, with the country’s biggest listed firm Astra International post-ing just a 2.7 percent rise in third quarter income as its coal, palm and heavy equipment businesses suffered from the commodities downturn.

New government rules curbing

raw mineral exports also hurt ship-ments of metal ores such as nickel and bauxite, while the mining sector has also been rattled by disputes between local and foreign investors, rising wage costs and community protests.

Still, investment does not seem to have been significantly affected so far, with foreign direct invest-ment rising 22 percent to a record $5.9 billion in the quarter, as firms eye the natural resource wealth and a growing consumer market.

Indicators for domestic demand, which makes up around 55 percent of the economy, mostly remain strong. Consumer confidence rose in September because of optimism on jobs and pay and malls are set-ting up impromptu showrooms for luxury cars and apartments.

The central bank has sought to spur this domestic consumption with record low interest rates that most economists expect to be main-tained well into 2013.

AntaraJAKARTA - Indonesia`s elderly population is set to increase

in number within the next 20 to 30 years, but experts believe that the country will have the benefit of a larger number of people in at productive ages.

Therefore, the government should initiate effective policies to take advantage of the demographic ̀ bonus` and to handle its senior citizens properly.

Until now, budget constraints have meant that the number of neglected senior citizens in Indonesia is rather high at eight percent of the country`s population of 237.6 million people.

“Indonesia now has 28 million senior citizens. Around 1.8 mil-lion of these or about eight percent of the population are neglected,” director of the Social Affairs Ministry for Senior Citizens Services, Yulia Suhartini said here on Wednesday.

The number of senior citizens in Indonesia is expected to in-crease to 71.6 million by 2050, which will become a big responsi-bility for the government to handle, according to Suhartini.

However, Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri has claimed that 2.9 million senior citizens were being neglected in the country.

“We have 2.9 million neglected elderly people. We want their relatives and all sections of society to provide proper care for them. We want to see a large number of people participating to provide assistance to them,” the minister said in Palu, Central Sulawesi in May this year.

Al Jufri said that if all sections of society took part in providing care for neglected elders the burden of their relatives, particularly those from economically weaker sections, could be alleviated.

He added that he understood that poverty was a major problem for people towards providing assistance for senior citizens, al-though some are cared for by their families or relatives. However, the figure was not optimal.

According to the minister, the main asset to help them is the creation of social solidarity and mutual spirit of help among all sections of society.

He said that senior citizens should be entitled to care at home by family members or through social institutions.

Caring for neglected senior citizens is also one of the tasks of the Social Affairs Ministry and it provides a social assurance worth Rp300,000 per month for neglected elderly people but the amount is still meagre.

According to Suhartini, the Ministry of Social Affairs has set aside a fund of Rp84 billion for the care of elderly people, of which Rp67 billion is meant for the elders` assistance program.

Besides, Rp8 billion are allocated for home care, day care and accompanied services.

She said that the government, in this case the Ministry of Social Affairs, was only able to handle 46,500 neglected senior citizens. Of this number, 26,000 were handled through an as-sistance program, 1,600 through home care and 4,500 through day care services.

According to Suhartini, limited funds allow only 1.6 percent of neglected elders to be cared for. “Therefore, we hope that all parties would also provide assistance. After all, the number of senior citizens will continue to increase in the future,” she said.

The social affairs ministry official said that the number of senior citizens in Indonesia would increase in the future because life expectance in the country has also gone up to 72 years.

It is predicted that the number of senior citizens will reach 40 million in 2025 and will swell to 71.6 million by 2050.

LONDON - Roger Federer wants more blood testing done in tennis to help keep the sport clear of doping, the 17-times grand slam champion said on the eve of the ATP World Tour Finals.

Britain’s newly-crowned U.S. Open champion Andy Murray raised the subject this week at the Paris Masters, suggesting there needed to be more out-of-competition checks. World Tour Finals title holder Federer said his Scottish rival had a point.

“I feel I’m being less tested this time now than six, seven, eight years ago,” the Swiss told a news conference at London’s O2 Arena. “I don’t know the exact reasons why we are being tested less and at this moment I agree with Andy, we don’t do a lot of blood testing during the year.

“I think it’s important to have enough tests. I don’t like it when I’m only getting tested whatever number it is, which I don’t think is enough or suf-ficient during the year so I think we should up it a little bit or a lot,” Federer added. “It’s key and vital the sport stays clean. It’s got to. We have a good history in terms of that and we want to make sure it stays that way.”

According to figures on its website the International Tennis Federa-tion, the sport’s governing body, carried out only 21 out-of-competition blood tests in the professional game in 2011.

It was the 30-year-old’s third tournament victory of the year after winning a Wimbledon warm-up event in Den Bosch, Netherlands and the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo in September.

“It’s a great way to finish the season,” Petrova said after receiving the trophy.

Winning the season-ending WTA event at the Armeets Arena in Sofia earned second seed Petrova a cheque for $270,000 and helped her rise one place in the world rankings to 12th.

Petrova, competing in the tourna-ment for the second time after reach-ing the semi-finals last year, broke Wozniacki twice in the opening set to take command.

Wozniacki, watched by golfing

boyfriend Rory McIlroy, then re-ceived medical treatment on her left calf but she was powerless to stop Petrova who produced some superb tennis in the second set.

The Russian looked much fresher despite having gone through an ex-hausting semi-final against Italian Roberta Vinci on Saturday.

“Yesterday I felt awful, I finished so late,” said Petrova. “I didn’t think I’d have enough time to recover but I did all the right things and woke up feeling good.

“I knew this was the last one and that I just had to give everything I had left. I had some long matches before this so I had to keep this one to two sets.”

Wozniacki began 2012 as the

world number one but endured a mediocre season and had to wait until September to land her first trophy of the year at the Korea Open.

The Dane then won the Kremlin Cup in October.

“My injury wasn’t the main rea-son for my loss today,” said Wozni-acki. “I tried to show my best tennis but Nadia was very strong.

“She served excellently and didn’t give me a chance. In the second set I tried to force her to move more but I was rushing with my shots and made a lot of mistakes.”

It was the first time the Tourna-ment of Champions was held in So-fia, having been relocated from Bali where it was staged for the previous three years.

PARIS - Spain’s David Ferrer clinched his maiden Masters title when he ended Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz’s brilliant run in Paris with a 6-4 6-3 final win on Sunday.

Fourth seed Ferrer proved too consistent for world number 69 Janowicz, who had previously beaten five players from the top 20.

Janowicz gradually ran out of steam and Ferrer ended the contest on his first match point when the Pole sent a backhand wide.

Ferrer, who fell down on the court in joy, heads to London where he will play in the World Tour finals starting on Monday.

LONDON - Liverpool failed to mark captain Steven Gerrard’s 600th appearance for the club with a win when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday which leaves them mired in mid-table.

Liverpool needed a well-taken 67th minute equaliser from Uru-guay forward Luis Suarez to save a point after Newcastle took a first-half lead through Yohan Cabaye’s stunning strike.

Earlier, Queens Park Rangers and Reading drew 1-1 at Loftus Road, leaving the two sides still looking for their first League wins of the season and both in the relegation zone.

Gerrard was presented with a statue of Liverpool’s city emblem, the liver bird, by former skipper Gary McAllister before the match when manager Brendan Rodgers compared him to Superman al-though not even his astonishing powers could bring victory.

Hatem Ben Arfa created Newcastle’s opener with a superb run down the right before crossing for Cabaye who lashed the ball into the far corner of the net after 43 minutes.

Suarez levelled with an excellent goal when he controlled a long ball from Jose Enrique and rounded keeper Tim Krul to score.

Roberto Mancini’s expensively-assembled English champions face elimination from the group stages for the second successive season follow-ing two defeats and a draw from their opening three Group D matches.

Their latest European adventure ended in a conclusive 3-1 defeat in Amsterdam two weeks ago and that result, together with a 3-2 defeat at Real Madrid and a 1-1 home draw with Borussia Dortmund, has left their future in the competition dangling by a thread.

Dortmund lead the way with seven points followed by Real who have six and Ajax (three). City (one) will need to improve their game significantly to overtake the sides ahead of them and reach the last 16 - and that is if other results go in their favour.

LONDON - Barcelona, Manchester United, Porto and unlikely contenders Malaga can book their tickets to the Champions League knockout stages by winning in midweek.

The quartet have all won the opening three group games and if they win a fourth will take their places in the last 16 with two matches to spare.

Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund and Shakhtar Donetsk could also take a big stride towards qualification with victories while champions Chelsea, big-spending Manchester City and former winners Juventus are under severe pressure.

“The Champions League is reaching a critical phase and we cannot afford any more mistakes,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “But this group of players is strong, we have belief and we go to Schalke on Tuesday believing we can get a good result there.”

After beating Montpellier and Olympiakos Piraeus in their opening two Group B games, Arsenal lost 2-0 at home to Schalke two weeks ago and another defeat in Germany would put their hopes in the balance.

The Londoners are second in the group, one point behind Schalke but three clear of Olympiakos and five ahead of Montpellier who also meet on Tuesday.

Things look far rosier for United who, without playing particularly well, have won their three Group H matches and go to Portugal’s Braga on Wednesday in good spirits having gone top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the weekend.

Braga established a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford two weeks ago before losing 3-2 and coach Jose Peseiro believes they can grab all three points this time round.

“We know about the resources and the value of Manchester United but that doesn’t stop us thinking that we have our chances, that we have good players, that we have a good team, and that we are ready to do good things and win the match if we can,” he said.

Barcelona can guarantee a place in the last 16 by winning at Celtic on Wednesday, as can Porto with a victory at Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday.

Malaga need to triumph on Tuesday at AC Milan to qualify. The Ital-ians have only won six of their last 27 Champions League matches.

Chelsea, who have made an ordinary start to the defence of their crown with a win, a draw and a defeat, cannot afford another reverse at home to Shakhtar on Wednesday after losing in Ukraine two weeks ago.

LONDON - Sportswear company Skins is suing cycling’s governing body for $2 million, claiming its brand has been damaged by backing the sport as the Lance Armstrong doping scandal unraveled.

Skins, which was founded in Australia and is based in Switzerland, has sponsored cycling teams and riders for five years, and supplied race suits for the United States at the London Olympics.

While Skins has never sponsored Armstrong or the UCI, it wants compensation for the damage it says it has suffered by investing in a sport ‘’tarnished’’ by doping.

‘’Skins was under the illusion that professional cycling had been fundamentally reformed to contain doping and to minimize the risks of scandals with which the brand of any sponsor could be associated,’’ lawyer Cedric Aguet wrote Friday in a letter to the UCI that was re-leased Sunday.

‘’It has now been proven that these legitimate expectations have been betrayed on the grounds you are aware of.’’

The UCI recently agreed to strip Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and ban him for life, following a report from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that accused him of leading a massive doping program on his teams.

UCI President Pat McQuaid has agreed to create a commission to examine allegations about the governing body’s conduct raised by USADA, including that Armstrong donated $125,000 in exchange for covering up suspicious doping tests.

Aguet’s letter claimed that the way the UCI, McQuaid and former president Henricus Verbruggen have organized the fight against dop-ing and dealt with the Armstrong case ‘’is the main cause for the total loss of confidence in professional cycling by the public, which harms SKINS, as well as any other sponsor or supplier.’’

Skins has had a partnership with the Rabobank team, which lost its title sponsor last month when the Dutch bank pulled out over the dam-age caused by the Armstrong case.

Skins chairman Jaimie Fuller said cycling now ‘’commands little or no trust or respect from the general public.’’

‘’We believe that until it was forced into action by USADA’s com-prehensive report, the UCI fundamentally failed to acknowledge the issues or act to save the credibility of cycling or its commercial part-ners,’’ Fuller said.

ABU DHABI - Kimi Raikkonen returned to the top of the Formula One podium for the first time since 2009 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, leaving his Lotus team in no doubt that he knew what he was doing.

The Finn, 2007 world champion with Ferrari, was typically blunt when his race engineer spoke to him on the radio shortly after he was gifted the lead by Lewis Hamilton’s sudden retirement.

“Leave me alone. I know what to do,” he replied drily.

Raikkonen can be a man of few words, sometimes unintelligible or inaudible to all but the most atten-tive of listeners, who would rather let his driving do the talking than engage in chit-chat.

“I’m not so stupid that I cannot remember what I’m doing,” he ex-plained later. “It’s a normal thing.

“They are just trying to help...I will also ask for help if I need it...different people like different things.”

He said when he announced his comeback, after two years in rallying and some NASCAR truck racing in the United States, that he was the same as ever and he has shown that on and off the track this season.

Sunday’s win was his seventh podium in 18 races back and his 19th career triumph. He also be-came the eighth different driver to win this season.

Seven-times champion Michael Schumacher, 43, has gone almost three years with nothing more than one third place to celebrate with Mercedes but Raikkonen has been on the money right from the start.

Good PartyHe said he could win if Lotus,

the former Renault team, delivered the goods and he was as good as his word at the Yas Marina circuit.

Asked on the podium by his now-retired former McLaren team mate David Coulthard to talk about his emotions and explain how amazing it was to win again, Raik-konen simply shrugged.

“Not much really,” he said, recalling how the last time he had been in such a position he was criti-cised for not smiling enough.

“I’m happy but there’s nothing to jump around about. For sure we’re going to have a good party today and hopefully tomorrow when we are feeling bad after a long night.”

Raikkonen has always liked a good party and having fun is part of the makeup of a man who has entered powerboat races dressed in a gorilla suit, been photographed embracing inflatable dolphins and competed in snowmobiles under the name of the late F1 racer James Hunt.

Sunday was a night of fun, a race win that the ‘Iceman’ set up by seiz-ing second place at the start from fourth place on the grid and then holding on to his advantage despite two safety car periods eating away at his lead.

The victory was the first for the Lotus marque since 1987 when Brazilian Ayrton Senna won for a very different team at the USA East Grand Prix in Detroit.

LONDON - Manchester City’s millions of dollars will count for precious little if they lose to Ajax Amsterdam and crash out of the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

City have also looked unimpres-sive in their last three Premier League games against West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and West Ham United where they drew 0-0 on Saturday and although they are the only team still to lose in the top flight, they have rarely played like champions.

Mancini said after the goalless draw at Upton Park that his team needed to recapture the attacking verve which helped them clinch last season’s league title.

“We missed so many chances against West Ham and when you miss these kinds of chances you cannot expect to win,” he explained.

“We have improved our defensive play but we need to start scoring like last year and I think we need to im-prove our offensive play.”

(kmb16)

(kmb)

“We have deployed a total of 2,700 personnel to support the Indonesian Military (TNI). We seek the support of society for the safe and proper conduct of

this event,” Bali Regional Police chief, Insp. Gen. Budi Gunawan said here on Monday.

He asked people to cooperate with the strict security checks in

some areas such as Nusa Dua, ahead of the event from Novem-ber 8-9, 2012.

Gunawan added that the police would tighten security along the

route to Nusa Dua, the Ngurah Rai airport and the Jimbaran area.

He also said that the police would conduct security drills along access points to Bali such as the Padangbai Port in Karan-gasem district and the Gilimanuk Port in Jembrana District.

However, Gunawan was re-

luctant to divulge additional information with regards to any specific threats to the event.

“Some activity is expected along some access points but there are certain details that we cannot speak about. We assure the public that all measures have been taken according to proce-dure,” he said.
