“The condition of former presi-dent Nelson Mandela, who is still in hospital in Pretoria, has become critical,” presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement late Sunday.

The frail 94-year-old was admit-ted to hospital over two weeks ago, in the early hours of June 8, for treat-ment for a lung infection.

But after intensive treatment at Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital and some signs of improvement, his condition deteriorated.

Mandela on Sunday evening and was told by doctors “that the former president’s condition had become critical over the past 24 hours.”

Maharaj told AFP on Monday there was no update on this condition overnight. Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president in 1994, is due to celebrate his 95th birthday on July 18.

He has been hospitalised four times since December, mostly for the pulmonary condition that has plagued him since his time in an apartheid jail.

Zuma sought to assure the country that medics were now doing all they could to save his life.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to im-prove and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” Zuma said, us-ing the revered leader’s clan name.

Zuma was accompanied to the hospital by the ruling ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.

At the hospital, the two also met with Mandela’s wife Graca Machel, who has been by Mandela’s bedside since he was taken ill.

Zuma appealed to South Africans and people worldwide to pray for Mandela, his family and the medics attending to him “during this difficult time.”

Flowers, cards, balloons and mes-

sages of support were left outside the gate of Mandela’s Pretoria hospital.

“Two weeks in hospital is re-ally a long time for an old man. I’m worried, we are all worried,” said Mthandeni Mjwara in Mthatha, a rural town in the region where Man-dela grew up.

“It’s quite sad to hear that his health is not improving, I was really hoping for good news.”

In Washington, the White House said its thoughts and prayers were with Mandela, as US President Ba-rack Obama prepares to visit South Africa.

“We have seen the latest reports from the South African government that former president Mandela is in critical condition,” National Secu-rity Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and the people of South Africa.”

Obama leaves Wednesday on a tour of Africa that will take him to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. The possibility of a meeting between the first black presidents of both South Africa and the United States has been hotly anticipated for years. The White House has said it will defer to Mandela’s family regarding any meeting.

As much as Mandela is loved by South Africans, with the latest hospi-talisations many have come to terms with their hero’s fragility.

“It is not up to us to decide what happens now. There is nothing we can do,” said Aphiwe Ngesi a teacher in Mthatha.“All we can do is hope for the best.”

DENPASAR - A theft action oc-curred in Kuta Police jurisdiction. Hotel Balisani on Jalan Padma Utara, Kuta, was broken in by thief on Friday (Jun 21). A number of valuables belonging to foreign dwellers were looted by the culprit. As a result of the incident, the victims suffered losses worth millions of rupiahs. The theft had been reported to Kuta Police and is still under inves-tigation.

The theft was just discovered by the victims at 03:00 a.m. where their valu-ables belonging stored in the safety box were known to have been taken away. Ironically, the incident afflicted to six foreign victims at once. They were re-spectively Jennifer Ame Mapstone, Peter Allan Spratt, Patrick Gerard Littele, Ross Alan Henry, Damien Michael McLeod and Nocole Barbara Dudli.

On knowing the incident, the victims immediately reported to hotel. The man-agement represented by the Hotel Man-ager, Gede Suamba, 48, then reported the case. In the report, he specified a number

of properties belonging to respective victim taken away by the culprit. The cash stolen consisted of USD 200, CAD 15, AUD 1,800, CHF 550 and IDR 2.6 million and IDR 500,000.

Suamba having the address at Pen-gubungan, Kerobokan, North Kuta, also explained to the investigator that his guests did not only lose their money. A number of passports, credit cards, airline tickets and driving licenses also vanished from their safety box. Accord-ing to him, the mode of culprit to take action was by gouging and damaging the safety box key. “After being dam-aged, the valuables were then taken away,” he explained.

Chief of Kuta Police, Agus Tri Waluyo, when asked for his confir-mation on Sunday (Jul 23) justified the theft. Once his party received the report, a number of criminal detectives were deployed to conduct crime scene and examine witnesses. Unfortunately, police could not have identified the culprit and so far the culprit was still under pursuit. “We are still collecting evidences,” he said. (kmb21)

Information in police station on Sunday (Jun 23) mentioned the case disclosure was based on a complaint from the public. The project purchased the fuel at one of the petrol stations at subsidized rate. However, the diesel was used to fuel heavy equipment. “After receiving the complaint, police im-mediately checked to location (project—Ed),” said the source last Sunday.

The source rejecting the name to be published on newspaper explained that after checking, the police found 40 liters of diesel at the project. It was stored in drums and allegedly purchased at subsidized price. “Checking to the project was made

on Friday at 12:00 a.m. Due to the indica-tion of fuel misuse, the diesel was secured to Denpasar Metro Police as evidence,” he explained.

Apart from the evidence, police officers also secured Toto Sukamto, 56, et al. to be questioned in Denpasar Metro Police. Ac-cording to him, the suspect purchased the subsidized fuel by truck and was then trans-ferred to the heavy equipment used to work at the project. “It is true that we revealed the case. GIANYAR - The dormant project of Bukit Jati Waterboom at Samplangan village, Gianyar, has not indicated any continued activity since the beginning of 2013. Though the Waterboom investor has expressed its willingness to make a swimming pool for swimming athlete through an affidavit, there is no indica-tion on the changes that the MoU will be resolved immediately.

On Sunday (Jun 23), the Division Head of Gianyar Governance, I Made Watha, when asked for his confirmation said the revision of MoU made by local govern-ment and the Waterboom investor related to the development of the water tourist attraction project at Bukit Jati was not final. Though the MoU revision regarding the readiness of the investor to develop a swimming pool for swimming athlete of Gianyar County had been agreed, so far the requirement in the form of design and budget plan had not been prepared. “We are still waiting for the revised design and budget plan from the investor so that the revision of such MoU can be accom-plished,” he explained.

According to Watha, the revision of design and budget plan had something to do with the submission of building permit made later on. If the requirement was not complied, local government could not accomplish the revision of agreement and submission of the permit. The affidavit containing the readiness to build the Olympic swimming pool (for swimming athletes) delivered by the investor was inadequate. “We are still waiting for the revised design,” he said.

Results of the meeting of Gianyar government with the investor PT Karya Makmur Dewata Group in the office of the Gianyar Development Plan Agency (Bappeda) some time ago mentioned if the investor could approve the revision of the MoU specifically the article 4, point B, point 8. NUSA DUA - Energy and Min-eral Resources Minister Jero Wacik hopes that Singapore and Malaysia will not exaggerate the problem of haze that affects them as a result of forest fires in Sumatra, Indonesia.

“I would like to call the attention of our friends in Malaysia and Singapore not to speak of the haze to the world,” the minister said when opening the 31st ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meet-ing (SOM) here on Monday.

He said that it was important (for him to make the statement) in ac-cordance with the spirit of ASEAN cooperation which gave priority to peace and mutual sharing.

“We should share the good time and but difficult time should not be

shared with the outside world. It is just like a husband and wife, they should share their good time but should not let others know if they quarrel,” Minister Jero Wacik said.

In the meantime, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak declared on Sunday a haze emergency situation in Muar and Ledang, Johor, which were shrouded with haze.

The emergency situation was declared due to increasing smoke that blanketed the areas, which had exceeded the air pollution index safe level, reaching over the 500 level.

“The emergency status has not yet led to the imposition of a curfew. There is no change in the public ser-vices in the Malaysian states and in the federal government,” Najib was quoted by Bernama as saying.

“So far, the contribution of the MSMEs to the economy of Indonesia is very large. It is directly proportional to the contribution of GDP and job creation,” said Deputy of Financing Division, Ministry of Cooperatives and the SMEs, Meliadi Sembiring, in Denpasar, last weekend.

However, he said, the constraint faced by the MSMEs was the matter of capital. It was caused by their limited access to financial institutions and banks. Based on the existing data, only 25 percent of the MSMEs had ac-cess to financial institutions.

“Some breakthrough programs to address the capital constraints of MSMEs in this field have been undertaken by the government. Among others, the government rolled out people’s business credit (KUR), cooperative rolling fund management institution and the MSMEs,” he explained.

To that end, the effort to channel the rating-based productive credit needed assessing careful-ly to assist the MSMEs in accessing finance from banks. Establishment of the credit rating agency for the MSMEs should be discussed because it had to consider the ability of the MSMEs to pay the credit rating assessment services.

“In the future, the credit distributed by banks to the MSMEs should be minimally 20 percent of the loan portfolio of each bank,” he said.

Director of the Rural Credit Agency and the MSMEs of Bank Indonesia, Y. Santosa Wibowo, also deplored the MSMEs having a bank account was only 9.027 million or 17 percent of the total MSMEs. Credit share of the MSMEs toward the total bank credit remained low namely at 19.9 percent recently.

He said that so far the bank stayed difficult to obtain adequate financial information regard-ing the reliability and financial condition of the MSMEs that had never been getting in touch with bank because of limited financial records of the MSMEs. Uniqueness of the MSMEs in general was that they had no organized information about the industry, market share, dynamics of competi-tion and management track record.

“To overcome the limitations of banking infor-mation on the eligibility and financial condition of these MSMEs, it is required a support system or an institution for the MSME credit provision by banks. One of the support systems is the credit rating system for the MSMEs conducted by an independent rating agency,” he said.

He mentioned, the benefits of credit rating to the MSMEs was to improve the creditworthiness, encourage the implementation of good gover-nance, have the opportunity to get the good loan interest rate and speed up the process of credit provision. Meanwhile, the bank rating would assist in determining the amount and terms of financing to the MSMEs and serve as an early warning system. (kmb27)

MANGUPURA - Hundreds of residents of Karang Dalem II, Bongkasa Pertiwi village, Abianse-mal subdistrict, blocked the channel of Ayung River with tree trunks, Sunday. They performed such an action due to being disappointed with 12 rafting companies that did not pay contribution for 10 months. The residents assessed the rafting companies only took advantage of the river and paid less attention to the condition of the environment and surrounding community.

of Badung and Gianyar County was carried out through mutual as-sistance involving approximately 400 residents. The trunks installed transversely in the river channel caused the rafting activities to come to standstill. As a result, many rafting activities were eventually canceled.

According to Headman of Bong-kasa Pertiwi, I Made Sarjana, the Ayung River was taken advantage by 12 rafting companies. Five com-panies located in the west of the river or Badung territory and seven others were located on the east of the river or in Gianyar territory.

According to the agreement, the rafting companies were obliged to pay contribution to the 11 hamlets along the west and east side of the Ayung River. Each hamlet got a contribution of IDR 500,000 per month. However, over the past 10 months, the contribution had never been realized. Sarjana said that his party had even questioned about the contribution arrears. The companies reasoned that they could not afford.

party did not hamper the rafting companies to operate along the river. However, his party just re-minded the employers to be more concerned with the surrounding communities affected by the rafting activities.

Proliferation of the rafting activi-ties had been causing difficulties to residents to earn their living along the river. The activities of residents such as fishing, fish farming and collecting firewood previously undertaken in the river were finally interrupted.

He affirmed that his party urged the rafting companies to immedi-

ately implement the agreement re-lated to the contribution. Before the agreement was complied with, the tree trunks used to block could not be removed. If they were moved, his party threatened to take such an action again.

Meanwhile, Chief of Abiansemal Police, I Gede Putra Astawa, prom-ised to bring together the residents with rafting entrepreneurs to resolve the issues. As planned, the rafting companies would be summoned on Monday and the mediation would be carried out on Wednesday in the office of the Abiansemal subdistrict head. (kmb25)

He admitted the fish market was less desirable by residents because they did not con-sume fresh fish every day. Instead, the residents expected the market to not only offer fish commodity but also other staples such as vegetables and kitchen needs. So, people would be eager to shop. “This market specifically sells fish and processed fish. Therefore, the buyers are only a few,” the man said.

Less optimal fish market was

widely criticized by a member of Commission II of the Tabanan House, Ida Bagus Kade Suryawan. This Democrat admitted that his party had criticized the fish market development from the beginning because the location was considered inappropriate. “From the beginning, we’ve highlighted the fish market project because it’s located far from fishing activity,” he protested. Ide-ally, said Suryawan, the fish market was built around the Yeh Gangga Beach or around Pesiapan Terminal. Thus, it was closer to the landing of fish and the activities of the other traders. He was concerned the fish market would also turn dormant following the other projects. One of them was the abattoir at Gubug. According to Suryawan, local gov-ernment should conduct a thorough study before making any project so that the budget allocated would not be in vain. The service was handled in turns by Fishery of-ficers from the morning to evening.

Just for information, such inte-grated fish market was started on April 27, 2012 and inaugurated seven months later. Indeed, the criti-cism against the fish market project had emerged when the project started. One of them was from an agricultural expert at the Udayana University from Penebel, Prof. Merta. PROBABLY the classy nickname given to Nusa Penida as a golden egg of Bali does not only refer to its natural potential. In terms of spiritual point of view, Nusa Penida is also often made a destination of Hindu pilgrimage in maintaining the balance of life. The majority of Hindus make the three major temples as their primary destina-tion, including the Penataran Ped, Giri Putri and Puncak Mundi Temple.

As the name suggests, the Puncak Mundi Temple is perched on the top of Mundi Hill, exactly at Rata hamlet, Klumpu village, Nusa Penida. Mundi is said to be the highest peak in the plains of Nusa Penida so that the tem-ple remains to look sustainable. Pun-cak Mundi Temple consists of three elements, namely the Beji Temple as the first praying place, Krangkeng Temple and Puncak Mundi as the abode of Ida Batara Lingsir.

Chief of supporting devotees of Puncak Mundi Temple, I Wayan Sukla, said on Saturday (Jun 1) that all the devotees of Puncak Mundi Temple

comprised 504 families scattered in eleven customary hamlets, including the Baledan Duur hamlet, Baledan Beten hamlet, Klumpu Kauh ham-let, Klumpu Kangin hamlet, Angas hamlet, Mentaki hamlet, Rata hamlet, Tiagan hamlet, Bila hamlet, Cubang hamlet and Iseh hamlet.

Compiled from various sources, Wayan Sukla told the presence of temples on Nusa Penida Island was inspired by the marriage of Lord Guru (Ishvara) and Goddess Uma. From their love was then born a son named Lord Kumara. However, the birth of Lord Kumara became the begin-ning of a dispute between the Lord Guru and Goddess Uma. It happened because Lord Kumara was closely taken care of by his father, while he only came to his mother when asking to be breastfed.

Being upset, Goddess Uma perse-cuted Lord Kumara while breastfeed-ing. With fury, her eyes turned red and her fangs came out. As a result, Lord Kumara was banged up to break his

head and his blood was drunk by God-dess Uma. Apparently, the violence was known by Lord Guru. On seeing her behavior like kala or evil spirit, the Lord Guru was angry. He condemned Goddess Uma to be transformed into a human being to the world.

“During undergoing the curse, Goddess Uma was said to have ar-rived amidst a forest. Within such a lonely place, there grows a large and high banyan tree. There she cried and her milk exuded to the ground. It then grew into a king banana (gedangsaba). That is why, the banana is very good for baby,” he said.

After long regretted her actions, she had desire to build a palace being no different from the heaven. She then established an ashram at the top of Bukit Mundi (Mundi Hill) and earned the title as Goddess Rohini. In the ashram, she performed solemn meditation.

In short, Lord Guru could not stand alone to care for his son because Lord Kumara kept asking to be breastfed

by his mother. Afterward, Lord Ku-mara was placed on a platform shrine (pelangkiran) to take care of baby. Suddenly, Lord Guru remembered Goddess Uma who was previously condemned and had been residing at the top of Pucak Mundi. Ultimately, Lord Guru decided to come down to earth, precisely to the abode where Goddess Uma was performing medi-tation, at the top of Bukit Mundi. Lord Guru himself transformed into a priest named Dukuh Jumpungan and met with Goddess Uma. Later on, this area was named Nusa Pani-da, derived from the phrase Manusha Pandhita. “Likewise, Goddess Uma then transformed herself into a woman named Ni Puri becoming the wife to Dukuh Jumpungan in the world and permanently settled on Mount Kila or Pucak Mundi. Supporting devotees of the Puncak Mundi Temple then called them Lord Lingsir,” said Sukla.

Temple was held every six months, falling every Buda (Wednesday) Umanis Perangbakat and the nearest would fall on Wednesday (next Jun 26). Series of the procession would be commenced by organizing an assembly and notification ritual on Anggara Kliwon Wuku Tambir.

Then, it was resumed with the implementation of animal sacrifice (pecaruan), taking down the sancti-fied effigies and embellishing them with ornamental paraphernalia on Anggara Kliwon Wuku Perangbakat. Afterward, the deities were escorted to do purificatory rite at Peji Temple and offered the anniversary ritual on Buda Umanis Wuku Perangbakat. Because the river estuary is on the move so that it sounds like abrasion, whereas it is actually a periodical abrasion occurring due to violent pounding of waves,” he explained.

Due to different characters of wave, the handling of coastal revetment system was also made different. On that account, it was protected by levees to withstand the blows of waves so as not to further erode the shoreline. But over time, the levees were gradually eroded and even prone to collapse.

“There have been levees to hold the periodic abrasion. Otherwise, the impact can be imagined. On that account, the levees should be maintained by colleagues in the Denpasar Public Works. Indeed, it requires quite expensive cost for safeguarding the beach. Moreover, the location is also taken advantage for melis activity, a Hindu religious purificatory ceremony,” he said.

Snowden, also a former CIA technician, fled Hong Kong on Sunday to dodge U.S. efforts to ex-tradite him on espionage charges. Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Ricar-do Patino said his government had received an asylum request, adding Monday that the decision “has to do with freedom of expression and with the security of citizens around the world.” The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks also said it would help Snowden.

Ecuador has rejected the United States’ previous efforts at co-operation, and has been helping WikiLeaks founder, Julian As-sange, avoid prosecution by al-lowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

Snowden gave documents to The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, often sweeping up information on American citizens. Officials have the ability to collect phone and Internet information broadly but need a warrant to ex-amine specific cases where they believe terrorism is involved.

Snowden had been in hiding for several weeks in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a high degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden’s extra-dition from Hong Kong to face es-pionage charges but was rebuffed; Hong Kong officials said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws.

The Justice Department rejected that claim, saying its request met all of the requirements of the extradi-tion treaty between the U.S. and Hong Kong. During conversations last week, including a phone call Wednesday between Attorney Gen-eral Eric Holder and Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen, Hong Kong officials never raised any issues regarding sufficiency of the U.S. request, a Justice represen-tative said.

The United States was in touch through diplomatic and law enforce-ment channels with countries that Snowden could travel through or to, reminding them that Snowden is

wanted on criminal charges and re-iterating Washington’s position that Snowden should only be permitted to travel back to the U.S., a State Department official said. Snowden’s U.S. passport has been revoked.

U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.

An unidentified Aeroflot air-line official was cited by Russia’s state ITAR-Tass news agency and Interfax as saying Snowden was on the plane that landed Sunday afternoon in Moscow. The Russian report said Snowden intended to fly to Cuba on Monday and then on to Caracas, Venezuela. The White House was hoping to stop Snowden before he left Moscow. Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said, “Given our intensified coop-eration after the Boston marathon bombings and our history of work-ing with Russia on law enforce-ment matters — including return-ing numerous high-level criminals back to Russia at the request of the Russian government — we expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the U.S. to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged.”

Still, the United States is like-ly to have problems interrupting Snowden’s passage. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, but does with Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Even with an extradition agreement though, any country could give Snowden a political exemption.

The likelihood that any of these countries would stop Snowden from traveling on to Ecuador seemed remote. While diplomatic tensions have thawed in recent years, Cuba and the United States are hardly al-lies after a half-century of distrust. Another country that could see Snowden pass through, Venezuela, could prove difficult, as well. For-mer President Hugo Chavez was a sworn enemy of the United States and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, earlier this year called President Barack Obama “grand chief of devils.” The two countries do not exchange ambassadors.

PODGORICA, Montenegro — Romania sent an aircraft on Monday to bring home survi-vors of a bus crash which killed 18 Romanian tourists in central Montenegro. The plane left Bu-charest bound for Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, where 28 injured passengers were hospi-talized, defense minister Mircea Dusa said.

The bus fell from a bridge over the Moraca river during a rainstorm and crashed some 40 meters (130 feet) into a ravine on Sunday. It was not immediately clear what caused the driver to lose control as the bus broke through the fence on one side of the bridge.

Police initially said Sunday that 13 people were killed, but the number of fatalities grew to 18 overnight. Forensic patholo-

gist Miodrag Soc told the AP that the victims will be identified by their families.

Altogether 29 people were injured, including a child who was at the bridge at the time of the crash, officials said.

The winding road that leads from Serbia in the north through the Moraca canyon and then to the seacoast is notorious for traf-fic accidents because it is narrow, and slippery in wet weather.

SONOMA, California — So many things have gone wrong for Juan Pablo Montoya this season that he’s come to expect the unexpected at the most inop-portune time. It came Sunday with one lap to go at Sonoma Raceway, where Montoya was desperately hoping to bank a bunch of points.

Instead, he ran out of fuel while running

second and had to coast to the finish line. He wound up 34th in a race he expected to contend for the victory.

“This is what we’ve been doing all year. We all work together and we’re trying to work the best we can, and then days like this, we throw them away,” Montoya said. “A disappointing day was going to be second but we took a second and made it into a 30-something finish again.”

Montoya was miffed because his Chip

Ganassi Racing crew never warned him to save fuel, which he could have easily done when he no longer had a shot to catch race-winner Martin Truex Jr. Instead, his gas tank suddenly went dry and he had to coast his way around the massive 1.99-mile (3.2-kilometer) road course.

He wound up inching toward the fin-ish line, where he parked his car, climbed out and made the long walk back to the garage. “They were telling me to go hard and telling me to go after (Truex) as hard as I could,” Montoya said. “We were in the good. They said ‘Keep going, go hard,’ and that’s what I was doing.

“Then when I came through (turn) 10 coming to the white, the fuel pressure just dropped and I knew I was dead meat.” Crew chief Chris Heroy was perplexed about the shortage. “We don’t know what happened — we were on the same strategy as (Truex),” Heroy said through a team spokeswoman. “We’re going to go back to the shop and figure it out.”

Montoya said the team possibly didn’t get the tank full on his final stop, or that the fuel calculations were off based on a number of variables that could have included his pace while in traffic versus his pace in clean air. “I think we missed it by a lap,” he said.

Lotus has questioned Pirelli’s decision to bring more con-servative tyres to the next few Formula 1 races.

Following high numbers of pitstops earlier this year, and resistance from teams over Pirelli’s plan for tweaks, the Italian company has elected to be conservative with its next compound choices.

Such a move will help teams that have struggled with their tyres, but is not so good for outfits like Lotus that proved better at coping with degradation. Lotus’ track operations director Alan Permane said the tyre choices seemed “conservative and contrary to the supposed approach for the tyre allocations in 2013.

“The individual compounds - super-soft, soft, medium and hard – were made softer for each grade this year in order to present teams with a challenge, which is what we saw at some races earlier in the season.

“That work is undone if you simply allocate harder com-pounds for races, as we’ve seen with those nominated for the next three rounds.

“It’s certainly unusual to take the same tyres to Hungary as to Bahrain and Silverstone. The situation is quite similar to last year when the allocations went harder late in the year and we just ended up doing one-stop races.”

Thursday’s rematch in For-taleza will be a chance for Italy to get even for a humiliating 4-0 loss to Spain in last year’s Euro-pean championship final.

“For us, Italy is a challenge in front of us as we try to get to the final,” Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. “I imagine for Italy it’s very important because the loss is fresh in their minds from the European final, and I am sure they are thinking of revenge.”

Spain defeats Nigeria 3-0 to reach semifinals


FORTALEZA, Brazil — World Cup winners Spain defeated Nigeria 3-0 with two goals from Jordi Alba and another from Fernando Torres on Sunday to set up a semifinal showdown with Italy in the Confederations Cup.

Alba, a left-sided defender, scored in the third minute to set the wide-open tone for the match. The goal capped off a series of one-touch passes with Pedro backheeling a clever ball to Andres Iniesta, who found Alba. His low shot beat keeper Vincent Enyeama.

Torres scored with a header in the 62nd minute, and Alba picked up his second in the 88th as Nigeria sought to score. Alba was named man of the match. He said it was a first for him.

“This is new for me,” he said. “This kind of award usually goes to the types who regularly score goals.” With this win, Spain extended its unbeaten string to 25 matches. But it was on the

defensive more than usual against the young Nigerian side — par-ticularly in the first half.

Nigeria played fast-flowing football in the first half creating about as much possession, just as many chances and regularly beat the World Cup winners to loose balls.

“Nigeria was tough for us,” Alba said. “Not just the first half, but the whole game. I have to praise them for playing like that against a team like we have.” Spain had played Nigeria only once before, losing 3-2 in the 1998 World Cup.

Only poor finishing let Nige-ria down, with Joseph Akpala and Sunday Mba squandering chances before the break.

Spain’s striker Roberto Sol-dado could also have had two but for sprawling saves by Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama. Cesc Fabregas also hit the post.

Nigeria’s Gambo Muham-mad missed an open goal in the second half with Spanish keeper Victor Valdes out of position, a prime example of the team’s poor finishing.

“I think we have so much anxiety in front of the goal line,” Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi said. “The good thing is we are creating chances, but we’re not finishing. And that’s something we need to work on. Hopefully it is going to come quickly.”

The match settled down in the second half with Spain keeping more possession. Nigeria also settled into a less physical game, perhaps tiring from the heat and high humidity in the tropical northeast of Brazil. Torres’ goal settled matters.

Nigeria heads home with mixed results. It arrived late from Af-rica for the first match after a threatened strike over disputed bonus payments. The African champions won only one match in the Confederations Cup, beat-ing tiny Tahiti 6-1 and losing 2-1 to Uruguay.

Spain will be hoping for better fortune in this semifinal. Four years ago it reached the semifi-nals but was beaten by the United States.

Spain has won the last two European championships and the 2010 World Cup and is trying to add the Confederations Cup title, the only major title it lacks.

FORTALEZA, Brazil — For-ward Mario Balotelli will miss Ita-ly’s semifinal vs. Spain in the Con-federations Cup due to a strained thigh, handing the team another major injury complication before facing the World Cup holder.

The Italian Football Federation made the announcement Sunday following medical tests on Balo-telli’s left quadriceps. The injury occurred during Italy’s 4-2 loss to Brazil on Saturday.

The federation said that Balotel-li would continue to be monitored in the hope that he can return for Italy’s next match — either the final or the third-place game. Italy faces Spain on Thursday then the

final and third-place games are scheduled for June 30.

Balotelli has been the Azzurri’s most explosive player in the tournament so far. He scored the winner in Italy’s 2-1 victory over Mexico, converted a penalty in the 4-3 win over Japan and set up a goal for Emanuele Giaccherini in the loss to Brazil.

Also, Balotelli has started as Italy’s lone true forward in each match thus far. Alberto Gilardino would seem to be the logical replacement if Italy coach Cesare Prandelli sticks with the single-striker lineup. Or he could use several forwards such as Stephan El Shaarawy, Sebastian Giovinco, Alessio Cerci or Ales-sandro Diamanti.

A few other Italy players are also injured. Key playmaker An-drea Pirlo was expected back for the semifinals after missing the Brazil game with a muscle prob-lem although he only performed a brief, light running session Sunday before being accompanied off the practice pitch by team trainers.

Also, midfielder Riccardo Mon-tolivo underwent a cerebral scan after a knock to the head against Brazil although the tests were negative. Still, he will be evaluated over the next few days.

Meanwhile, fullback Ignazio Abate was sent home after dislo-cating his right shoulder. Spain routed Italy 4-0 in their last meeting, last year’s European Championship final.

RECIFE, Brazil — Tahiti started its final match of the Confederations Cup with yet another goalkeeper, the third to be used in the team’s three matches at the World Cup warm-up tournament.

Gilbert Meriel faced Uruguay in the Group B match at the Arena Per-nambuco, losing 8-0 but saving a penalty. Xavier Samin played in the 6-1 loss to Nigeria in the opening match last Monday, and Mikael Roche was in goal for the 10-0 drubbing against Spain on Thursday.

Tahiti coach Eddie Etaeta had said it was his intention to use as many of his players as possible.

Meriel saved the penalty attempt from Andres Scotti in the 50th minute. He dived to his left to stop the shot and then scrambled to control the loose ball. One minute later, Scotti was sent off with a second yellow card.

Tahiti qualified for the Confederations Cup by winning the Oceania Nations Cup.


ISTANBUL — Iraq stunned Eng-land with a goal in the dying seconds to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw in the Under-20 World Cup on Sunday, denying the English their first win in the competition since 1997.

It was a bitter blow for England, which has had a miserable run at the Under-20 World Cup, even failing to score in the last competition two years ago. A win would have also lifted some pressure off the Football Association following its under-21 team being knocked out early at the European Championships earlier this month.

The English started well and were the better side for long stretches of the Group E match, using their physical size and strong passing game to cause headaches for the Iraqi defense.

England took the lead when a corner was headed by Harry Kane to allow captain Conor Coady to score in the 41st minute. England doubled its lead in the 52nd courtesy of a nifty run by Kane. He rushed down the right side and fed a charging Luke Williams, who tapped the ball in

for what seemed an insurmountable 2-0 lead.

But after England goalkeeper Samuel Johnstone brought down Mohanad Abdulraheem in the area, Ali Faez sent the spot kick into the upper part of the net to cut the lead in half. And in the third minute of injury time, Ali Adnan weaved his way past four defenders in the area and fired a shot that glanced off Johnstone and went into the net.

That set off wild celebrations among the Iraqi fans and prompted Iraqi coach Hakeem al-Azzawi to start dancing. Also, 10-man Chile came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 while Croatia upset Uruguay 1-0.

The African champions struck first. Hassan Ahmed won the ball inside the South Americans’ half and slid a through ball to Mahmoud Kah-raba, who slotted home in the 10th minute. Chile drew level in the 25th when Nicolas Castillo’s right-foot shot deflected off Egypt captain Rabia Ramy and looped into the net.

Egypt had the better chances in the second half but it was Chilean substitute Christian Bravo who made the difference. He controlled a pass

from Bryan Rabello’s knock-down, moved across the penalty area and fired a right-foot shot into the far corner of the net.

In Group F, Croatia missed an early penalty but still beat Uruguay, considered one of the favorites to advance.

After a listless opening 20 min-utes, Croatia had the first opportunity when Dario Canadija received a ball behind the defense but was clipped by Gaston Silva. Marko Livaja’s penalty hit the inside of the post and then goalkeeper Guillermo De Amores before being cleared. Livaja made up for the miss in the 41st when his pass deflected off Manchester United’s Guillermo Varela and into the path of Ante Rebic, who scored.

Uruguay wasted several good chances in the second half, includ-ing Diego Rolan’s diving header that forced a one-handed save from Oliver Zelenika plus an overhead kick from Giorgian De Arrascaeta that he couldn’t keep down.

The team’s final chance came when Diego Laxalt cut the ball back for substitute Nicolas Lopez’s close-range shot to hit the post.

SEOUL - South Korea have named former skipper Hong Myung-bo as the new head coach of the national team, the Korean Football Association announced on Monday.

Hong, who captained the Koreans to fourth place at the 2002 World Cup on home soil, takes over from Choi Kang-hee, who stepped down last week after guiding South Korea to their eighth consecutive World Cup finals appearance.

Hong led the Korean Olympic team to a bronze medal at the London Olympics last year and has long been viewed as a national team coach of the future.

However, the KFA have decided it was the right time to give him the top

job after South Korea scraped through to the 2014 World Cup on goal dif-ference after finishing runners-up in Asian qualifying Group A.

“The Korea Football Association has named former Olympic team coach Hong Myung-bo as successor to national team coach Choi Kang-hee whose contract has expired,” the KFA said in a statement.

Choi took over in December 2011 and said at the time his only mis-sion was to get the team to Brazil and that he would step aside after qualification.

There was little chance of him being asked to reconsider after an un-impressive end to qualifying, where the Koreans lost twice to Iran, drew with Lebanon and scored lacklustre wins over Qatar and Uzbekistan.

Of the total, 159 hot spots were detected in Riau Province, a significant increase from 95 hot spots on Sutarday, Warih Lestari, of the local meteorological, cli-matology, and geophysics agency (BMKG), said here on Monday.

Based on the monitoring by NOAA satellite on Sunday, the 227 hot spots were found in the provinces of Riau (159), West Sumatra (21), South Sumatra (15), North Sumatra (12), Jambi (11), Bengkulu (six), and Aceh (three).

In Riau, the hot spots were detected among other things in Rokan Hulu District (41), Pela-

lawan (35), Siak (22), Bengkalis (11), Kuantan Singingi (11), Kampar (nine), Rokan Hulu (eight), Indragiri Hulu (eight), Dumai (seven), and Indragiri Hilir (five).

High temperature on Sunday triggered more hot spots in Su-matra, he said. Riau has lately experienced extreme hot weather with above normal temperature, according to Lestari.

Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan recently said the govern-ment would not tolerate compa-nies burning land and bushes that caused haze to shroud Riau and its surrounding.

“Companies which are proved to have practiced slash-and-burn activities and caused land and forest fires will be acted upon firmly. There will be no com-promise,” the minister said when attending a function to see off a land and forest fire extinguisher team in Dumai, Riau, on Satur-day.

He said that the government was now concentrating on put-ting out land and forest fires under the coordination of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The agency team is composed of members from relevant ministries.

Jakarta - Public transportation fares to increase by 15 percent following the fuel price hike announced by the government last Friday (June 21), Transportation Minister EE Mangindaan said here on Monday.

“The government and public transportation companies (land and sea transportation) have agreed on the new fares,” he said adding that he will deploy related officials to the provinces to supervise the implementation of the new policy.

However the minister emphasized airplanes and train will not have their fares increased. But the minister doesn’t explain if the taxi fare also influenced.

The government last Friday (June 21) announced the price hike of subsidized gasoline from Rp4,500 to Rp6,500 a liter and subsidized diesel oil from Rp4,500 to Rp5,500 a liter.

The announcement is made after the House of Representatives (DPR) passed a bill of the revised 2013 state budget into a law at a plenary session on Monday (June 17) night, that approved the government`s proposal to raise the prices of subsidized fuels.

Biak, Papua - The national air defense command of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) in Biak Numfor District, Papua Province, held a static air defense exhibition at the Manuhua airbase on Sunday.

“The air defense exhibition may serve as a means to inform the In-donesian people of the TNI AU`s weaponry in securing the air territory of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke,” the command`s chief, Air Commodore Asnam Muhidir, said here.

He expressed hope the static show can draw the people`s attention to the airspace defense and the TNI AU. Several military planes displayed at the exhibition consisted of four F 16 jet fighter planes and C 130 Hercules cargo aircraft of the TNI AU`s Squadron III.

The static show is a part of exercise called Cakra and the command`s operations in Biak.

During the show the TNI AU`s Special Forces (Paskas) also con-ducted skydiving from C 130 Hercules. The exhibition was also aimed at encouraging youths` interests to become TNI AU soldiers.

“The exhibition displays the Indonesian military aircraft and weap-onry. Through the exhibition, we can see for ourselves the condition of jet fighters and the performance of TNI AU soldiers in defending the air territory of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia,” Fatima, an exhibition visitor, said.

Besides serving as a means of learning, she said the exhibition also enabled the public to understand soldiers and get information on air defense equipment of the TNI AU.

At least four F 16 jet fighters and a C 130 Hercules plane were parked in the yard of Manuhua airbase.

Many visitors took the opportunity to ask about the TNI AU and take pictures of the airplanes as well as air crew members.

In order to strengthen the air defense, the TNI AU has several new military planes consisting of EMB Super Tucano, and Sukhoi 30 MK.

Indonesia also has put an order for 16 fighter training jets of T 50 Golden Eagle to South Korea.

The TNI AU has sent six of its pilots to South Korea to attend six-month training on the new jet fighters.

French Industry Minister Ar-naud Montebourg accused Eu-ropean Commission President Manuel Barroso at the weekend of fuelling far-right groups through austerity policies, the latest in a growing war of words over EU-imposed measures to cut debt.

“I’m tired of seeing ministers like Mr. Montebourg ... saying it’s always the fault of someone else, shirking responsibility and looking for scapegoats,” Barni-er, European commissioner in charge of regulation, told France 2 television.

“But they won’t be shirking for very much longer because the moment of truth will arrive at some point, it’s arriving for the minister.”

Barnier’s reaction, which he

followed up with a Twitter post calling Montebourg’s criticism “absurd & false”, added to ten-sion between Brussels and Paris where politicians are blaming austerity policies for strangling the French economy.

It showed the Commission is ready to match eurosceptic French rhetoric with criticism of a politi-cal class it says is responsible for France’s lagging competitive-ness, high unemployment and flat growth.

“Look how some countries in Europe, with the same Com-mission, are doing better than France ... Germany is doing better because it supports busi-ness,” said Barnier, a French former minister, from the centre-right UMP party.

The European Commission is waiting to see how France will re-spond to policy recommendations it made in May, which include reforming the pension system, opening up protected job sectors to competition and continuing to overhaul labour rules.

President Francois Hollande has already lowered expecta-tions for a plan to fix a debt-laden pension system, saying there would be no rise in the legal retirement age.

BANGKOK — The price of oil fell Monday amid growing worries that China’s decision to clamp down on informal lending could hamper growth in a major energy consuming country.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was down 36 cents to $93.33 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.71 to close at $93.69 on Friday.

Signs of an economic slowdown are already visible in the world’s No. 2 economy. Last week, a private survey showed manufacturing in China contracted at a faster pace in June to a nine-month low. Moreover, Chinese economic growth slowed unexpect-edly in the first quarter to 7.7 percent and forecasters have cut their growth outlook for the year. Asian stock markets fell, and oil prices moved along with them.

“Weaker growth and funding concerns in China added another layer of uncer-tainty to the market psyche,” analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a commentary.

Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refineries to make gasoline, was down 19 cents to $100.72.

LONDON/FRANKFURT - Vodafone has agreed to buy Germany’s largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland for 7.7 billion euros ($10 billion), betting on TV and fixed-line services in its biggest deal since 2007.

Announcing its second major acquisi-tion for a European fixed-line network in 12 months, Vodafone said it would pay 87 euros ($110) per share for the group to enable it to offer more competitive pack-ages with TV, fixed-line and broadband services to its mobile customers.

The world’s second-largest mobile operator, following up its acquisition of Cable & Wireless Worldwide, is however paying a rich price for the German firm and its 8.5 million homes, which it con-sidered buying before it went public in March 2010 at 22 euros per share.

One trader who asked not to be named said the offer, Vodafone’s biggest since a 2007 Indian acquisition, valued Kabel Deutschland at 12 times enterprise value against 2013 core earnings, a 35 percent premium to the sector.

However, this falls to 8.5 times when

taking into consideration the synergies Vodafone expects to extract. “We believe this is a decent deal for Vodafone,” the trader said. Shares in the group had been trading at 63 euros before Vodafone’s initial interest was reported in February.

The UK-based company was forced to raise its offer in the last week after John Malone’s Liberty Global entered the fray, forcing it to up the stakes or face losing ground to Liberty’s own cable operator Unity Media and to Deutsche Telekom.

“German consumer and business demand for fast broadband and data services continues to grow substantially, as customers increasingly access TV, fixed and mobile broadband services from multiple devices,” Vodafone Chief Executive Vittorio Colao said.

“The combination of Vodafone Ger-many and Kabel Deutschland will greatly enhance our offerings in response to those needs.”

The board of Kabel Deutschland said it expected to recommend the offer to its shareholders, although some analysts thought Liberty Global could still return with a counter offer even though it would likely face high regulatory barriers.

The clashes in Sidon, 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Beirut, is the latest bout of violence in Lebanon linked to the conflict in neighboring Syria. They are the bloodiest yet involving the army. At least three of those killed are officers.

The fighting has deepened tensions in Lebanon, on edge since the Syrian conflict began more than two years ago. Lebanon’s sectarian makeup mirrors that of its neighbor and rival groups back different sides in the Syrian conflict.

The National News Agency said the clashes also left fifty wounded. The report said it was not clear how many gunmen were killed or wounded in the clashes, nor whether there were civilian casualties.

Machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenade explosions caused panic among residents of Sidon, Lebanon’s third largest city, which until recently had been largely spared the violence hitting other areas. Residents reported power and water outage.

The city streets appeared largely deserted Monday, and local media reported many residents were asking for evacuation from the area of the fighting, a heavily populated neighborhood in the city. The news agency said a government building was hit. The local municipality said that the city is “a war zone,” appealing for a cease-fire to evacuate the civilians and wounded in the area.

Many people living on high floors came down or fled to safer areas, while others were seen running away from fighting areas carrying chil-dren. Others remained locked up in their homes or shops, fearing getting caught in the crossfire. Gray smoke billowed over parts of the city.

The clashes erupted Sunday in the predominantly Sunni city. The army says supporters of Sheik Ahmad al-Assir opened fire without provocation on an army checkpoint.

It tied the attack to the war in neighboring Syria. Al-Assir is a virulent critic of the powerful Shiite militant Hezbollah group, which along with its allies dominates Lebanon’s government. He supports rebels fighting to oust Syria’s President Bashar Assad.

Early Monday, al-Assir appealed to his supporters through his Twit-ter account in other parts of Lebanon to rise to his help, threatening to widen the scale of clashes.

The tweets did not give a clear statement on how the battle began. It came after a series of incidents pitting the cleric’s followers against other groups in the town, including Hezbollah supporters and the army.

MILAN - Judges in a Milan court retired to consider their verdict on Monday in a trial in which former Italian prime minister Silvio Ber-lusconi is accused of paying for sex with a minor and abusing the powers of his office to cover it up.

The verdict, which could under-mine the fragile coalition government if it goes against Berlusconi, closes a two-year trial that has mesmerized Italy with its accounts of the alleged “bunga bunga” sex parties at the bil-lionaire’s private villa outside Milan while he was premier in 2010.

The panel of three judges, all women, were expected to announce their verdict in the afternoon. Pros-ecutors had asked for a six-year jail term and a ban on holding public office.

With two appeals possible, it could be years before a verdict is final. However, if the 76-year-old is found guilty it could weaken Prime Minis-

ter Enrico Letta’s left-right coalition government, which depends on the center-right leader’s support.

Several members of Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party have urged him to withdraw his backing, and he may be more tempted to do so if he decides it is giving him no legal protection.

“He is expecting it to go against him, he has been telling everyone that the judges are prejudiced,” said James Walston, politics professor at the American University of Rome.

Berlusconi is accused of paying for sex with former nightclub dancer Karima El Mahroug, alias “Ruby the Heartstealer”, when she was under 18, and of abuse of office to secure her release from police custody on a separate occasion.

“We talk about Instagram as captur-ing and sharing the world’s moments. It’s not just about photography,” Ins-tagram founder Kevin Systrom told “Nightline” anchor Bill Weir in an exclusive interview. “There are a ton of moments in the world that can’t be captured in single images.”

They can, however, be captured in video clips under a half a minute long, said Systrom. An update to the current Instagram app, which will be released today, will allow users to capture anywhere between three to 15 seconds of video, apply a new set of filters and then easily share them with their Instagram friends or through other social media services.

and feel a lot like the older version, because it was meant to be all about keeping the interface “simplicity.”

Users will now hit the camera but-ton and get a choice of a still camera or video camera option. Selecting the video option will bring up the usual viewfinder, and then, similar to Twitter’s Vine app, holding down the video icon will capture video. Releasing it will allow you to pause the video, readjust your shot and then start capturing again.

Then comes the part that has made Instagram so popular with more than 130 million people: the filters.

“We put the power of a photog-raphy studio in the palm of your hand. We’ve done the same for video. So now you can take beauti-ful video and basically share it with the world,” Systrom said.

LE BOURGET, France — When the Concorde started flying in the 1970s, hopes were high that the traveling masses would soon streak through the air faster than the speed of sound or soar in planes that hurtled like missiles above the earth’s atmo-sphere. Instead, jetliners still look the same as they did five decades ago and travel times have barely budged.

To consumers who have watched the world’s technological imagina-tion shift to Silicon Valley, the airline industry seems plodding. Computers and cellphones are obsolete almost as soon as they’re unwrapped. The aviation industry looks stuck in time by comparison.

Electronics and bodily fluids don’t mix well. But new technol-ogy enables electronic devices to function in direct contact with tissues inside the body. The technology could allow scientists to make sensors that detect the early stages of organ transplant rejection, or create artificial nerves, researchers say.

Of course, many electronic devices already reside in the body — pacemakers, for example. But their electronics don’t come in direct contact with bodily fluids because they are enclosed in hermetically sealed stainless steel and sprayed with chemicals that inhibit the body’s immune response (which would otherwise reject them).

“What we’re doing here is [developing] electronics working in concert with the body,” study researcher Paul Berger, an electrical and computer engineer at Ohio State University in Columbus, told LiveScience. The majority of electronics contain silicon, the element used in the semiconductors. Silicon is cheap and nontoxic, but the elec-trolytes inside the body interfere with silicon circuits. Sodium and potassium ions — two of the most common electrolytes in the body — can seep into silicon transistors, causing the sen-sor signals to drift. “They slosh around inside the transistor, so nothing is really stable,” Berger said. The ions are “an absolute bane for silicon microelectronics,” he said.

Restricted by huge costs, rising fuel prices and safety concerns, the aviation industry is unable to make the same leaps and bounds. It has instead turned its eye to less obvious advances, ones that companies say have allowed more people to fly than ever before.

But even some industry insiders revealed a touch of disappointment at the Paris Air Show this week.

“Look at all the aircraft ... they’re

exactly the same (as they used to be), they’re just using different material,” said Gerrard McCluskey, the vice president of engineering at AERO Vodochody, a Czech aerospace manufacturer.

One of the most talked about in-novations at the show in Le Bourget this week was the use of composite materials — including carbon fibers and plastics; Airbus’ newest jet, the A350, relies heavily on composites. But to the naked eye, it looks just like all the other Airbuses on display.

Many plane manufacturers let the military lead the way because the armed forces have the money to play with new technologies, test them extensively and then figure out how to build them efficiently.

“We let the military test it, prove it,” McCluskey said. “I think what we have to understand is that aircraft are vehicles, they have to be safe and have to follow certifications.”

But he predicted that within the next 10 years, planes won’t contain a fuselage — where the cabin and cock-pit are now. They’ll just be one flying wing. Like a fighter jet. Or the gone, but-not-forgotten Concorde, which cut the flight time from London to New York to 3 hours and 20 minutes from nearly eight hours.

So what happened to the Concorde? The same thing that happened to the industry at large: the economy.

The Concorde was heavily subsi-dized by the French and British gov-ernments and as the industry declined in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it

became clear it was no longer viable.While the experience of air travel

has changed little, its global popularity has grown almost exponentially in the past two decades. In its 20-year out-look, Boeing Co. predicted the com-mercial aircraft fleet would double by

2034, with most of the new passengers in Asia and Latin America, where stan-dards of living are rising quickly. But increased demand and the rising price of fuel have forced manufacturers to focus all their innovation know-how on fuel economy.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

INNA Hotel is reborn in Kutaibp

KUTA - With high optimism, the hotel previously known as Inna Kuta Beach, now operates under its new designation as Grand Inna Kuta. It presents a modern minimalistic concept in the form of a new edifice called the Beach Wing with 220 rooms comprising Deluxe, Junior Suite, Grand Junior Suite, Deluxe Suite and Penthouse types that mostly offer ocean views, complete with a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and meeting rooms.

The snake charmer who created the images is photographer Mark Laita, who spent a year visiting zoos, breeders, col-lectors and venom labs in Central America and the United States. Using a large-format camera and somehow catching the very-much-alive snakes in dramatic poses, he captured some of the world’s most poi-sonous creatures with details so vivid and textured that they seem unreal.

Academy curators chose 12 of the nearly 100 snakes in his art book, “Ser-pentine,” for the exhibit running until Sept. 15. Laita photographed each snake right after it molted, when the colors are the most brilliant.

“It was hard to pick 12 because all of them are incredible,” said Jennifer Sontchi, the academy’s director of exhibits.

As dazzling as the photo reproductions appear in the book, the actual photographs on exhibit must be seen to be believed. They appear almost three-dimensional, dramatically lit in black frames hung on a black wall, while the acid-bright colors emit an otherworldly glow.

“It’s as if these creatures are to their core so inherently beautiful,” the Los Angeles-based photographer says in the book, “that there is nothing they can do, no position they can take, that fails to be anything but mesmerizing.”

These slithery subjects didn’t just coil up for Laita — they showed off their sinu-ous skills to weave into the shape of an ampersand, a fiddlehead, a figure-eight, a braid. He didn’t pose any of his models; he just set them on a black velvet background

and waited for them to show their stuff. “It was a collaboration between him and the snake,” Sontchi said.

The project for him was an aesthetic examination of color, form and movement, but the natural human response to snakes — good or bad — adds another layer of meaning for the viewer.

Laita paid a price for beauty: He was bitten by one of his models, a deadly black mamba snake. Luckily for him, it was a non-venomous dry bite, which he inadvertently caught on film the moment it happened.

Other snakes in the photo exhibit in-clude a blue Malaysian coral snake, an emerald tree boa, a Brazilian rainbow boa constrictor and the aptly named beautiful pit viper, boasting its neon pink and green scales.

PHILADELPHIA — A striking new photography exhibit at the Acad-emy of Natural Sciences might make people scared of snakes a bit rattled, but there’s no better way to appreciate these incredible creatures up close while staying out of fang’s reach.
