I hope that you were able to take a break from the toils of work and get out and do some fishing with family and friends! This season has been one that many of us will re- member as the summer of high water, high winds, cooler than normal air and water temperatures and tough fishing all around. Our neighbors to the North in WI, MN and Canada all reported extremely high water conditions, a late ice out, a late spawn and minimal weed growth. Put it all together and it makes for some tough fishin’ no matter what species you pursue. I say this as our chapter just returned from the annual Lake of the Woods trip to the NW Angle in MN. 27 of us descended on the water with high hopes of catching that fish of a lifetime, only to be faced with some of the toughest fishing and boating conditions Mother Nature could throw at us! High winds made boat control tough, lack of weeds made locating fish frustrating and cool water temps made the fish lethargic! Either way, it was way better than going to work every day! As we resume our normal monthly meetings, this August newsletter is the 1st publication we’ve sent to our membership since January; and for that I sincere- ly apologize. The blame falls squarely on my shoulders and going forward I will make sure we don’t miss an issue for our membership! For many of our members this is the only source they have to keep in touch with the goings-on in our Chapter. We will do a better job communicating to our membership though our newsletter, Facebook and our newly redesigned web site which hopefully will be live by the time you re- ceive this newsletter! Please visit our site at www.frvmuskie.com and check out the new site and give us your feedback! Our August 13th speaker will be Phantom Pro-Staffer Duane Serck who will be talking about fishing Central IL lakes for Muskies! Duane is the past President of the Central IL chapter and has been chasing muskies for nearly 30 years! The buffet dinner will be served at 6:00PM and the meeting begins promptly at 7:00PM. Grab a notepad and a friend and come on by to get caught up on what every- one has been doing over the summer break! Our youth outing at One Hope United in June was another huge success! I want to thank all of the guides who donated their time, boats and skills to help the 22 kids who participated in this event. Your efforts helped to create some lasting memories for these kids! We also partnered with Cabela’s in June to help out at the Hoffman Estates Kids Fishing Derby. This event was attended by nearly 300 kids. FRV members were on hand to set up rods and reels donated by Cabela’s, fix tackle problems and help the kids learn how to fish! It was a well attended event! On Satur- day August 9th we will partner with Cabela’s and the Bartlett Park District to kick off the 35th Annual Bart- lett Kids Fishing Derby at Beaver Pond in Bartlett. This is a free event open to anyone between the ages of 2-16. This event is sponsored by Cabela’s and many of our members help to run the event, judge fish and help distribute the many prizes we get donated for this event! If you have a young child or know someone who would like to participate in this event, please let them know about it. Registration starts at 8:00AM and fishing begins at 9:00AM and runs till 11:00AM. Following the conclusion of the fishing, the awards and raffles will begin. Sure hope you can make it! We are looking for volunteers to help assist, so if you’re interested, please contact me directly! Jumping ahead to our October club meeting, we will have a free pizza night and we will welcome all new members and new prospective members! If you haven't been to a club meeting in a while, this is the meeting to be at! More information will be rolling out on these de- tails as we get closer! Check our website for additional news! As the year continues to roll on, I will be stepping down as your President at year end. This is my 4th 2-year term at the helm and it’s been a great ride. It’s time for me to hand the reigns over to my successor who will take us to the next level. Time is a precious resource and as my family continues to get older, my spare time has become devoted to sports, sports and more sports. I want to be devoted to this until the boys move on to college; and I don’t want to short change the club. We will have more details on how the 2015 FRV Executive board will look as the year closes. As soon as we have this nailed down, I’ll let you know who the new President will be! Thanks to all of you for your kindness and support through the years! I’ve truly enjoyed every minute of it! Until next month….get out & fish! Time is a wastin! Rich Gallagher AUGUST ISSUE

Lake of the Woods Outing Re-cap by Steve Kroll A total of 27 FRV members and their partners ventured up to Angle Outpost

Resort from July 11 to 18 to chase the mighty Muskie. To say the least it was a

challenging week. The Lake was 3 to 4 ft. above normal pool and many areas

were flooded. Most of the small islands, rock bars and other hazards were under

water. Water temps were in in the high 60’s when we got there and barely

reached 70 by the end of the week. We faced high winds the first three days

making it almost impossible to fish certain areas. Many of us were out on the

Lake when a nasty thunderstorm came out of nowhere. Winds kicked up to

close to 40 mph and waterspouts were moving across the Lake. The bite was

tough with several days of boats coming in with no fish and few follows. De-

spite it all there were 42 fish caught during the week. The majority were under

40 inches and several fish under 30. The team of Jim Murray/Mark Eglitis boat-

ed a 49”er. Lou Principata got a 47”er. Jim Schroedl got twin 48’s and Jerry

Chwierut got his personal best a 46.5” and Jim Bishop netted a 44”. Several of the fish were caught on Top Raiders.

The Koniewicz/ Miller team boated 11 and Rue and his partner Craig came in second with 10. Several guys caught

some bonus pike with a few over 40 inches. Thanks Jason and Lisa from Angle Outpost!

Bartlett Kid’s Fishing Derby On Saturday, August 9th, the

Bartlett Park District will be

holding its Annual Kids Fishing

Derby at Beaver Pond from 8:30

until noon. Beaver Pond is locat-

ed just east of route 59 at Stearns

Road. Almost 300 kids attended

last year. We need volunteers to

act as judges and record and

measure fish as they are caught.

There will be prizes for the big-

gest fish by age group. Again we

must thank Diane Schneider for

her generosity as Cabela’s donat-

ed close to $1,000 in prizes. If

you can help us out, please email

Steve Kroll at stevekroll-

website and post your confirma-

tion there.

One Hope United Kid’s Outing by Steve Kroll On Saturday, June 14th, members of the FRV volunteered to act as guides for approxi-mately 20 boys from One Hope United, an organization that provides housing, counsel-ing and support for abused children, on Deep Lake in Lake Villa. The weather was per-fect and the boys caught bluegill and bass. Prior to the event Dave Lefflemen brought his boat over to the One Hope Campus to give the kids and education and allay the fears of some who were afraid of the water. For many of these kids, it was there first time in a boat and first time fishing. After the fishing was over, staff and volunteers prepared a barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers and fixings. Many of the boys spoke publically as to what this meant to them and expressed their appreciation to our members for giving them the time. Each of the boys received an FRV Baseball Cap and small tackle case purchased by FRV. Diane Schneider from Cabela’s donated rods and reels to each of the participants. Thanks to all of the guys who volunteered. All will tell you it was a re-warding experience.

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… For the past three years, our chapter membership has held over 300 members! This

places our Chapter in tie for 3rd place with one of the Minnesota Chapters. Size does

matter! Revenues from club meetings helps our chapter to provide you with better

monthly speakers! It also allows us and to host more events and outings for our

membership. This is the primary reason your membership is important to our Chap-

ter’s success. Our biggest challenge is reminding members not to let their member-

ships expire, so when you receive a reminder letter from

either FRV or MI, please don’t procrastinate, renew it

promptly...You have the convenience of renewing your membership at the monthly

meetings, or by email to: [email protected] or www.muskiesinc.org.

Thank you all for your support and good fishing!
