Aquip Systems & Flexim
• Australian instrumentation company, based in Technology Park, Bentley
• Currently 12 employees, including 5 service engineers & technicians for commissioning/support work.
• Over 20 year history selling and supporting instrumentation, primarily to industrial clients (oil&gas, mining)
• Became WA and NT exclusive distributors for Flexim in 2010 – started becoming more involved with building industry.
• German manufacturer of non-invasive ultrasonic flow metering technology for over 20 years
• Currently ~100 employees, annual turnover ~$30M USD• Clamp-on Ultrasonic Metering is all that they do.• Industries include O&G, Mining, Chemical, Building,
Pharmaceutical, Water etc – flexible technology.• Flexim Asia division set up in 2009, to target the SE Asian
region.

FLOW
Theory:Signal in the direction of flow travels faster compared tosignal against the flow direction. The difference in transittime has a direct relationship with the flow velocity.
A swimmer swims faster with the flow as compared to against the flow.
The sonic signal does the same.

Transducer Design
• Paired transducers → precision
(typical zero point error < 0.005m/s)
• Temperature compensated → no drift
• No moving parts, factory zeroed, no
drift → no recalibration required
Transducers & Calibration
Flow calibration
• All transducers are calibrated to the transmitter on a calibration loop in the factory.
• Traceable calibration certificate provided for every transducer pair.
• Calibration and transducer information stored on EPROM.

Dual-µP technology with high-speed multiplexer 1000 Hz instead of 20 to 40 Hz with conventional / older systems
Allows increased signal evaluation - non usable signals are eliminated due to statistical signal evaluation
Stable and precise measurement even in case of disturbances

Flexim’s Permanent Coupling Foil
Transducer
Pipe
Non-Liquid Coupling Foil – Flexim now employ a dry coupling using a Vitonpad. This means that the transducer can be installed underneath insulationwithout ever needing maintenance – the system is truly maintenance-free.
The transducer must make direct contact with the pipe – any spaces reducesignal strength. Historically (and by others), this is achieved using a silicongel. Unfortunately, this gel slowly evaporates and needs to be re-applied.
Dry Coupling

• High Accuracy (±1.2% of reading ±0.01m/s)
• High Repeatability (0.15% of reading ±0.01m/s)
• High Turndown (0.01…25m/s)
• Drift Free
• Minimal installation efforts and costs
• No spool-piece – price effective at higher pipe diameters
• Maintenance free with dry coupling foils
• Ideal for retrofit
• No pipe cutting needed for mounting and servicing
• Any liquid, any temperature, any pipe, any flow
• No risk of leakage
• No parts in contact with the medium (ideal for aggressive media)
• No flow restriction - no system pressure loss
• Independent of electrical conductivity, pressure, temperature and viscosity
• No moving parts – no wear and tear

Thermal Energy Flow
For a closed piping system, a metering device that:
1.Measures:
1. the volume or mass flow of the liquid;
2.The temperature out of the heat
producing/consuming source;
3.The temperature into the heat
producing/consuming source
2.Computes the thermal flow rate
(e.g. kW/hr, BTU)
FLEXIM's thermal flow meter is fully integrated - all measurements and the thermal computation are made by the Flexim flow computer.

Temperature Probes
(insertion type also sourced as required)
13
• Device fully integrates flow and temperature measurement to calculate heat-flow.
Eliminates any additional signal conversions which are a large error source for
thermal flow.
• Excellent turn-down – off-peak service is still measured.
• Completely non-intrusive* - ideal for retrofit jobs.
• Maintenance-free – no moving parts, dry coupling, no drift. Transducers can be
installed underneath insulation.
• Cost-effective – a 2-channel clamp-on thermal flow meter measuring both chilled
and hot water is typically <$13,000AUD. Commissioning approximately 3-4 hours.
*If required, insertion temperature probes are easily integrated into flow computer.
