ULTRASONIC FLOW METERS
Hydroelectric Power Generation
Hydroelectric Power Generation Hydroelectric Power is energy that has been harnessed from flowing water
and been converted via turbines into electricity
Even though they are relatively basic in design, the principle of channelling water from a naturally flowing river to a turbine that converts said water into usable energy is still used in power generation today
This is commonly known as ‘Run of River’ hydroelectricity
Storage & Pumped Storage The other two main forms of Hydroelectric Power Generation are storage and
pumped storage
Storage includes a reservoir of water found at height behind a dam or ‘Head’
The water is released in controlled amounts down piping or tunnels where it will flow over turbines
These turbines turn the pressure of the water and drive a generator, converting the water’s energy into electricity
Pumped storage uses the same process, but a second reservoir is located at the bottom to store the water that has passed down the pipes. This water is then reused the following day
Ultrasonic Flow Meters Ultrasonic Clamp-on Flow Meter technology has been used as a cost-
effective solution in various Industries and businesses
One of these uses includes measuring and controlling the flow of water in hydroelectric power plants
The Ultrasonic Flow Meter is attached to the outside of the piping in which
the water flows This shows that they are easy to install and maintain without disrupting the
process or the flow of the water
Transit & Doppler Flow Meters Transit Flow Meters emit and record sound waves
If the water is still, there will be no change to the sound wave. However, as the water moves, the difference between the sent and received sound waves are measured and recorded
Doppler Flow Meters measure sound waves that are reflected off of
particles in the liquid
The water in hydroelectric power plants is unlikely to have sufficient particles for accurate measuring
Therefore, a Transit Time Flow Meter would be the suitable option, providing highly accurate readings
The Benefits Through providing accurate and reliable measurements in water
flow, the Flow Meters offer cost-saving benefits These include a reduction in the need for maintenance and the
costly downtime it can incur
Other benefits include optimal efficiency, as well as the opportunity to spot potential issues before the even occur
